- DID YOU KNOW ?
- Bob's your uncle!
- catch phrase
- - used to express the ease with which a task can be achieved
- (Oxford English Dictionary)
- ---
- For those who believe British English has taken a back seat to American
- English, hold your horses! The Queen's English still boasts umpteen
- words and expressions used mainly by the British and the Commonwealth
- countries. Bob's your uncle is a good example. While it may have
- infiltrated American English to a very small extent, this expression
- remains uniquely British.
- One of the more popular theories regarding the origin of "Bob's your
- uncle" involves Lord Salisbury, the Victorian prime minister (real name:
- Robert - Bob - Cecil). Salisbury appointed a rather unpopular nephew to
- several government posts. One of the most controversial was as the Chief
- Secretary of Ireland, a position that many thought the young nephew was
- completely unqualified for.
- The legend goes on to say that the cynical crowd in Britain then
- believed that having "Bob" as your uncle was like getting a free pass at
- the door, thus "Bob's your uncle" came to indicate something that was
- quick and easy to do.
- Other experts point out that "bob" has been used in several other
- figures of speech and slang phrases such as "all is bob," which means
- everything is okay. It would not be hard to imagine that this usage had
- something to do with the origin of "Bob's your uncle."
