  1. >With the last of your coffee gone you decide it's time to get Moonie's lazy ass out of bed.
  2. >The door to her room softly creaks as you gently push it open and call out.
  3. "Moonie? Moonie," you coo.
  4. >She grunts at you in irritation and rolls over
  5. "Moonie, it's time to get up."
  6. >"I'm still tired!"
  7. >You roll your eyes at her.
  8. >Typical teenagers.
  9. >Not wanting to spend the next few minutes debating over whether she could get up or not, you step out and grab a small cup of water.
  10. "Three..."
  11. >Another grunt in response.
  12. "Two..."
  13. >"What are you counting down for? Go away!"
  14. "One..."
  15. >She turns to look up at you with sleepy, worn out eyes then they shoot open as she realises exactly what you're doing.
  16. >You pour the cup's contents all over her face which causes Moonie to bolt upright, coughing and spluttering.
  17. >"You dare trifle with me, mortal?"
  18. "Still wetting the bed at your age? Tch. Well, don't forget to change the sheets," you mockingly reply as you leave the room.
  19. >"I've never wet the bed," she stammers back furiously.
  20. >A chuckle escapes your lips as you hear something thrown at the door.
  21. >It's too easy to rile her up.
  22. >You head into the lounge room and sit at your desk to write down a letter to the princess.
  23. >The older Moonie gets, the more updates the princess wants.
  24. >Not that you can blame her.
  25. >Apparently, last time Moonie was an adult, she took control of Luna then shrouded Equestria in an eternal night. Twice.
  26.
  27. Dear Princess Celestia,
  28.
  29. Moonie is doing well, she still refuses to wake up until it's midday.
  30. Her magic is slowly getting stronger.
  31. Despite the occasional joke, she is showing no signs of returning to her old self.
  32. I also doubt she'll return to the way she was.
  33.
  34. Your loyal subject,
  35. Anonymous.
  36.
  37. >You send the letter off by lighting it with the matches given to you by the Princess long ago.
  38. >In just a minute, there's already a reply but you don't bother reading it.
  39. >Instead you place it in the top draw.
  40. >You and Celestia have been sending the same letters back and forth for months now. You're getting tired of reading the same letter over and over.
  41. >It's always something along the lines of:
  42.
  43. Dear Anonymous,
  44.
  45. I am happy to hear all is well. Thank you for letting me know.
  46. I look forward to your next letter.
  47.
  48. Sincerely,
  49. Princess Celestia.
  50.
  51. >As you lean back in your chair, you let out a tired sigh.
  52. "Tired already? Wow, I must be getting old now," you mutter to yourself as you run your fingers through your hair.
  53. >There's a rustling noise in the kitchen as Moonie rummages for something to eat.
  54. >"Ugh! I'm going to Sugarcube Corner, bye!"
  55. "Take care," you call back as the front door shuts.
  56. >The sound echoes out through the house before it falls deathly quiet.
  57. >You sit there for a moment, taking in all the silence.
  58. >It's weird how silent the place gets when Moonie isn't around.
  59. >As much as you like some peace and quiet, it just feels odd.
  60. >You get up and decide you should get some cleaning done.
  61. >It doesn't take long, the house rarely gets messy because you clean the place so often out of boredom.
  62. >Last room on the list is Moonie's room.
  63. >You change the sheets that are still wet from her wake up call, tidy the shelves and sweep the floor.
  64. >As you're sweeping, you look under the bed for chip packets and other bits and pieces of food that Moonie throws under there from her midnight snacks.
  65. >She just uses under there as a bin, probably because she thinks you don't know or something.
  66. >That's when you notice in between an apple core and an empty pack of chips lies something you haven't seen in the longest time.
  67. >Sir Bearington.
  68. >You bring him out and dust him off.
  69. "Wow. It's been a while. What happened to you?"
  70. >One of his eyes has started to come loose, a seam under his right arm has busted open and he's decorated with a few patches of all kinds of fabrics from all the times you've had to stitch him back up when Moonie was a filly.
  71. >Or as Moonie liked to describe them, battle badges.
  72. >Poor guy looks like he hasn't seen some care for quite some time.
  73. >Your heart sinks a little.
  74. "Guess she doesn't need a teddy any more," you state to the lifeless bear.
  75. >You run your fingers through his rough fur as you decide to patch him up.
  76. >You add another 'battle badge' to pull the fabric under his arm back together and replace the string in his button eye so it's no longer hanging loose.
  77. >Then you give the guy a ride in the washing machine followed by a short spin in the dryer.
  78. >Afterwards you sit him down and admire your handy work.
  79. >He's clean, warm and furry again.
  80. "Back to your former glory, eh?"
  81. >Sir Bearington just stares at you with his big button eyes, silent and motionless.
  82. >Then you hear the front door click, interrupting your moment.
  83. >"I'm back," Moonie calls out, "I brought food."
  84. >You walk into the kitchen to see Moonie, who is in a much happier mood, placing a few bags from Sugarcube Corner on the table.
  85. >She brought eclairs, donuts, tarts and a few other confectionery delights.
  86. "I hope you're not planning to eat all those by yourself."
  87. >She scoffs at you.
  88. >"I was thinking of sharing with you but if you'd rather, I can just give them to the Cutie Mark Crusaders."
  89. "Dibs," you reply as you pick up an éclair.
  90. >Moonie tisks in disappointment as she only brought one.
  91. "Are they still going by that name? They've all got their cutie marks now."
  92. >"Force of habit I guess," she replies as she digs into a strawberry tart.
  93. >The two of you silently chew away before you try and spark conversation again.
  94. "Found a place to do work experience yet?"
  95. >"No. I don't know why I need to, it's a pointless school thing after all."
  96. "Doesn't matter what you think of it, school says do it so you're doing it. It's your last year, try to leave with a good impression."
  97. >Moonie groans, knowing you're going to lecture her if she continues trying to squirm out of it.
  98. >"How about, Queen of Equestria? I think I'd make a fine queen."
  99. "You forget to take a bath sometimes, what makes you think you can run a country?"
  100. >"It's not that hard. If Celestia can, even a monkey."
  101. "I take offense to that."
  102. >"What? Why?" She scoffs in disbelief.
  103. "Humans are related to monkeys."
  104. >"Really? Well, that explains a lot," she smirks as she finishes the last of her tart and goes for a donut.
  105. >You raise a brow at her and smirk.
  106. >The sound of a sudden flash of fire calls out from your desk, which means you've got a letter.
  107. >You stand up and head over to read it.
  108. >As you unfurl the letter, you begin to softly read it aloud to yourself.
  109.
  110. Dear Anonymous,
  111.
  112. I understand you need time to think about my proposal and you will most likely be discussing it with Nightmare Moon but I wish to explain the reasoning for my offer.
  113.
  114. "Wait, what offer?" you ask yourself.
  115. >You open your draw and grab the letter from this morning.
  116. >As you skim through it, you see that Princess Celestia has offered you and Moonie a place to stay at Canterlot.
  117. >There isn't much more aside from her expressing that she looks forward to a reply.
  118. >You return your attention back to the latest letter.Nightmare has progressed into a fine mare, I truly believe she has reformed as she has done no wrong since she has been taken into your care aside from very minor instances.
  119. "That you know of. There was the bear army thing," you mutter.
  120.
  121. Nightmare has always been a natural ruler, however cruel in her previous attempts and that is why my sister and I would like to begin guiding her so that she may one day rule over an area of her own.
  122. I also understand that you have your own life to attend to. My offer is for both you and Nightmare Moonie however, I will take good care of Moonie if you wish and you'd always be welcome to visit.
  123. Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.
  124. I look forward to your reply.
  125.
  126. Sincerly,
  127. Princess Celestia.
  128.
  129. >You place the letter down and run your fingers through your hair.
  130. >This is pretty big.
  131. >No doubt Moonie will be all for becoming Queen over something.
  132. >You however, aren't so sure.
  133. >You have a life here. Friends, a job and a home of your own.
  134. >Celestia is asking you to either leave it all behind or let Moonie go.
  135. >There's always the option of choosing neither and the two of you stay here like you always have but, that's not fair to Moonie.
  136. >A low, tired sigh escapes your lips as you take a seat.
  137. >Then Moonie enters the room.
  138. >"Everything alright? You don't look so good."
  139. "Yeah, just..."
  140. >You hesitate. You find yourself catching your own tongue when you try to speak.
  141. >But you know you need to tell her so you take a deep breath before speaking up.
  142. "The princesses offered you a place in Canterlot."
  143. >"What's wrong with here," she asks."... They want to guide you on how to govern your own land one day."
  144. >Her eyes shoot open in shock, then as she processes what is happening, her smile grows and grows.
  145. >She's beaming brighter than a lighthouse and her smile is wider that what you thought was possible for her face.
  146. >As she jumps with glee, you can't help but smile.
  147. >You don't recall ever seeing her so happy before.
  148. >"What are we waiting for? Let's go!"
  149. >She darts off to her room, presumably to pack but then rushes back.
  150. >"Wait, what about you?"
  151. "The offer extends to me too but..."
  152. >"But?"
  153. >Suddenly, the thought of Sir Bearington left to gather dust under the bed appears in your head.
  154. >Moonie is growing up. She doesn't need a stuffed bear any more.
  155. >Maybe she doesn't need you.
  156. "I'm thinking of staying."
  157. >Moonie's smile shatters and is replaced with a stern gaze of disappointment.
  158. >She then shakes her head with a scoff as she leaves the room.
  159. >"Yeah, just do whatever you want."
  160. >She storms into her room and slams the door shut as you bury your face into your hands.
  161. >You've fucked up.
  162. "I'm going out for a bit," you call out.
  163. >She doesn't reply.
  164. >You decide to head over to Sugarcube Corner.
  165. >At times like this, you could use a friend and Pinkie is just the one.
  166. >When you arrive, you see a big line up. That's when you remember they're having another sale of Pinkie's special cupcakes.
  167. >They've always been a hit with the town.
  168. >You squeeze through a few ponies to get in, none of which voice any protest.
  169. >You're not surprised, more than half the town is intimidated by you thanks to your size and some of the rumours Moonie thought would be funny to spread about you.
  170. >Plus, some know you work here, usually you're around back though.
  171. >After squeezing through the crowd, you arrive at the counter.
  172. >"Hey pal, back of the line," demands a gruff voice.
  173. >You turn to see the voice came from a mare.
  174. "Holy shit, I thought you were a stallion," you stutter back in surprise.
  175. >The mare is fuming at your remark, it looked like she was ready to punt you in your down under but Mrs Cake steps in.
  176. >"Oh, Anonymous, we were waiting for you. Come round back."
  177. >The mare immediately regains her composure and smiles at Mrs Cake.
  178. >You can feel her malice intent towards you still but she won't do a thing if she thinks you're a friend of the owner.
  179. "T-Thanks," you reply as you follow her into the kitchen round back.
  180. >"Why Anon dearie, I'd appreciate it if you didn't start fights with our customers."
  181. "Sorry, but her deep voice threw me for a loop."
  182. >"Bon-Bon gets very sensitive about her voice, please be a little nicer to her."
  183. >You apologise to her before she returns to the counter.
  184. >Then you realise you're alone in the kitchen, unsure what you should do.
  185. >There's no point cooking, everyone wants Pinkie's special cupcakes and she's the only one who knows how to make them.
  186. >And you came here in the first place to talk to Pinkie, not to work.
  187. >"Oh, Anon, whatchya doing here on your day off?"
  188. "Evening sir, just wanted to chat with Pinkie but she's busy."
  189. >"Anything I can help with?"
  190. "I 'suppose you'd be better suited than Pinkie. I'm having parenting troubles."
  191. >"Moonie causing mischief again?"
  192. >You then go through the story with Mr Cake; voicing all your concerns, worries and conflicting feelings like how you don't want to leave.
  193. >He sits there, intently listening to every word.
  194. >He doesn't move or say a word until you've finished.
  195. "So, yeah. Just unsure of what to do."
  196. >"You know, when the twins first arrived, Mrs Cake and I weren't fully prepared. There was so much we had to do. There was juggling work, the kids and at times, Pinkie. It was too much for us sometimes but do you know what inspired us?"
  197. "Your kids?" You reply with uncertainty in your answer.
  198. >"No, you did."
  199. >His response surprised you.
  200. >You've never thought of yourself as someone inspirational, so you're not sure how to take that compliment.
  201. >In a way, it's overwhelming to hear.
  202. >"You took care of Moonie with no time to prepare for her and we all know how much of a handful she used to be. Yet, you managed."
  203. >"You know, the girls and I go to Canterlot every other week," Pinkie states as she steps into the kitchen, "OH! We can have a party whenever we catch up!"
  204. >You chuckle to yourself as you stand up.
  205. >"Besides, we were going to fire you next week anyway," Mr Cake jests.
  206. >You laugh a bit as his joke before standing up.
  207. “I guess I have my answer…”
  208. >You stare into space for a moment, you’re not really sure why or what you think about but Pinkie quickly snaps you out of it by speaking up.
  209. >”I’ll miss you Anon.”
  210. “I’ll miss you too,” you reply as you kneel down and hold her in a warm embrace.
  211. >You’re not a fan of goodbyes.
  212. >After saying goodbye to the Cakes and Pinkie, you go visit the rest of your friends to explain the situation.
  213. >They’re all understanding and repeat what Pinkie said about how they always go to Canterlot anyway, so it won’t be like it’s a permanent farewell.
  214. >All in all, everyone takes the news pretty well.
  215. >Now you just need to make up with Moonie.
  216. >You stand outside your door, with a heavy heart.
  217. >She’ll probably rub it in when you apologise.
  218. >You step inside and head straight to Moonie’s room to find the door ajar as she is searching the room for something, throwing and pushing things aside with her magic.
  219. “Everything alright?”
  220. >She stops and looks up to you, the same irritated look on her face from earlier.
  221. >”What?”
  222. “Watch the attitude,” you reply as you take a seat on her bed, “look, I came here to apologise.”
  223. >She sits where she was standing and gives you a look of expectancy while you let out a breath you didn’t realise you were holding.
  224. “I’m sorry, the news was pretty much sprung on me. I’m being asked to leave my life behind, which is a big ask to take in all at once.”
  225. >Moonie’s annoyed face fades away.
  226. >She understands, even if she didn’t like your answer at the time.
  227. “But I’ve done some thinking.”
  228. >Her face begins to glow, a small smile begins to creep onto her face as she starts hoping you’re about to say what she wants to hear.
  229. >”Wait… Does this mean… We’re going?”
  230. >You nod and Moonie returns to being a giddy, bundle of joy.
  231. >She hops up and down while cheering in between her happy giggles.
  232. >And again, you smile.
  233. “Start packing your things, I’ll go ask when they want us there.”
  234. >Moonie doesn’t reply, instead she uses her magic to bring out a suitcase from under her bed before throwing everything she can into it.
  235. >Wonderful.
  236. >You’re going to have to pack for the two of you. You’re not all that surprised about that though.
  237. >You decide to go send Celestia a letter before you make a start on packing. She did say she was eagerly waiting to know your answer.
  238. >Before you leave Moonie’s room, you stop in the doorway as you recall the mess she’s made in here.
  239. “What were you up to before I walked in?”
  240. >”Hm? Oh, I was just grabbing everything out so it’d be easier to see what I should pack or leave.”
  241. >You nod before going to your desk.
  242. >As you take a seat, the chair creaks under your weight and you take out a scroll and quill to begin writing.
  243.
  244.
  245.
  246. Dear Princess Celestia,
  247.
  248. Moonie and I accept your kind offer. Please let me know when is the best time to make the move and I’ll be there.
  249.
  250. Sincerely,
  251. Anonymous.
  252.
  253. >You set the scroll ablaze with a match before getting up to walk towards your room.
  254. >Along the way, you notice the little guy you left alone in the laundry, Sir Bearington.
  255. >As you look at him, sitting there, your heart sinks a little lower.
  256. >You’ve never felt sympathy for a stuffed bear before but here you are, feeling sorry for him.
  257. >Moonie loved and cherished him, they rarely separated and now all of a sudden, he’s abandoned to collect dust.
  258. >You never even noticed the change.
  259. >You pick him up and decide to bring him along with you to Canterlot.
  260. >Moonie is ready to grow up, but it seems that you aren’t.
  261. >Not just yet.
