  1. Florida's new baseball team will sport an old-fashioned look.
  2.
  3. The expansion Florida Marlins unveiled uniforms for 1993 on Wednesday. Their inaugural season will feature traditional pinstripes and - on occasion - a vest jersey not seen in the major leagues for more than 20 years.
  4.
  5. The basic home uniforms are white with Marlin blue (a cross between teal and aqua) pinstripes, "Marlins" across the front, and Marlin blue hats with a black letter F entwined with a leaping fish.
  6.
  7. For Sunday home games and some other special occasions, the team will wear the jersey vests, with a short-sleeve Marlin Blue undershirt.
  8.
  9. "I was against the idea at first; don't ask me why," general manager Dave Dombrowski said at Joe Robbie Stadium. "But when I saw them, I really liked the look. And they're comfortable."
  10.
  11. The vests made their first appearance with the Chicago Cubs in 1940-42 and last were worn by the Kansas City and Oakland Athletics from 1962 to 1971. They also were worn, at times, by the Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Indians in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The Baltimore Orioles wore vests occasionally during the 1968 season.
  12.
  13. On the road, the team will wear traditional grays, with white and blue striping on the pants and "Florida" across the front. There are two road caps: one black, one blue with black bill.
  14.
  15. The Marlins also released their first merchandise catalog, which includes replicas of the new uniforms. To order a catalog, write to Marlins Catalog, 2856 E Oakland Park Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, Fla. 33306-1814.
