Google's refusal to implement name changes properly (changing name on historical comments and posts and logs) combined with the transparent integration of Hangouts and SMS (shows a recipient a user's G+ name whether they are in circles or not) combine to consistently and repeatedly out transgender individuals. In addition, it epitomizes Google's continued privileged ignorance of users' privacy needs in social products - both Buzz and Google+ in its infancy revealed data to stalkers as both had ineffective privacy settings and shared users' potentially sensitive data without asking, which makes this an astoundingly longstanding issue with Google product management.

  3. The impact of this has been exacerbated by the abominable and often accidentally racist "Real Name" policy which continues to not effectively take into account mononyms and non-Western names.
