  6.
  7. Moodle is an Open Source Course Management System (#CMS), also known as a Learning Management System (#LMS) or a #Virtual Learning Environment (#VLE). It has become very popular among educators around the world as a tool for creating online dynamic web sites for their students. To work, it needs to be installed on a web server somewhere, either on one of your own computers or one at a web hosting company. #UnhappyGhost
  8.
  9. What really Moodle is?
  10. ----------------------------
  11. Moodle (acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is a free software e-learning platform, also known as a Learning Management System, or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). As of June 2013 it had a user base of 83,008 registered and verified sites, serving 70,696,570 users in 7.5+ million courses with 1.2+ million teachers. #Geekschool
  12.
  13. Moodle was originally developed by Martin Dougiamas to help educators create online courses with a focus on interaction and collaborative construction of content, and is in continual evolution. The first version of Moodle was released on 20 August 2002. #Geeksch00l
  14.
  15. The focus of the Moodle project is always on giving educators the best tools to manage and promote learning, but there are many ways to use Moodle:
  16.
  17. - Moodle has features that allow it to scale to very large deployments and hundreds of thousands of students, yet it can also be used for a primary school or an education hobbyist.
  18. - Many institutions use it as their platform to conduct fully online courses, while some use it simply to augment face-to-face courses (known as blended learning).
  19. - Many of our users love to use the activity modules (such as forums, databases and wikis) to build richly collaborative communities of learning around their subject matter (in the social constructionist tradition), while others prefer to use Moodle as a way to deliver content to students (such as standard SCORM packages) and assess learning using assignments or quizzes.
  20.
  21. The Moodle project comprises several distinct but related elements, namely
  22. - the software.
  23. - Moodle Pty Ltd (also known as Moodle.com and Moodle Headquarters, based in Perth, Western Australia), an Australian company which performs the majority of the development of the core Moodle platform.
  24. - the Moodle Community, an open network of over one million registered users who interact through the Moodle community website to share ideas, code, information and free support. This community also includes a large number of non-core developers, with Moodle's free source license and modular design allowing any developer to create additional modules and features that has allowed Moodle to become a truly global, collaborative project in scope.
  25. - the Moodle Partner network, which forms the commercial arm of the Moodle environment and provides the bulk of the funding to Moodle Pty Ltd through the payment of royalties.
  26.
  27. Features
  28. ---------------
  29. Moodle has several features considered typical of an e-learning platform, plus some original innovations (like its filtering system). Moodle is very similar to a learning management system. Moodle can be used in many types of environments such as in education, training and development, and business settings.
  30.
  31. Some typical features of Moodle are:
  32. - Assignment submission
  33. - Discussion forum
  34. - Files download
  35. - Grading
  36. - Moodle instant messages
  37. - Online calendar
  38. - Online news and announcement (College and course level)
  39. - Online quiz
  40. - Wiki
  41.
  42. Developers can extend Moodle's modular construction by creating plugins for specific new functionality. Moodle's infrastructure supports many types of plug-ins:
  43.
  44. - activities (including word and math games)
  45. - resource types
  46. - question types (multiple choice, true and false, fill in the blank, etc.)
  47. - data field types (for the database activity)
  48. - graphical themes
  49. - authentication methods (can require username and password accessibility)
  50. - enrollment methods
  51. - content filters
  52.
  53. Many freely available third-party Moodle plugins make use of this infrastructure.
  54.
  55. Moodle users can use #PHP to write and contribute new modules. Moodle's development has been assisted by the work of open source programmers. This has contributed towards its rapid development and rapid bug fixes.
  56.
  57. By default Moodle includes the #TCPDF library that allows the generation of #PDF documents from pages.
