- <guest_85> hey guest_30, are you that guest who needed to find a pdf converter?
- <guest_30> anyone here know a good hardware configuration for an chat web site under $1000?
- <guest_85> uh what?
- <guest_30> err a server...
- <guest_85> lol
- <guest_30> crap, i just splattered the question everywhere
- <Kodiac> guest_30: what do you mean chat web site
- <guest_85> whats that mean
- <guest_85> kodiac guest_30 just got screwed up with words
- <guest_30> let me rephrase that
- <guest_85> ok
- <Kodiac> ^^
- <guest_85> its embarassing when you have something in your copy paste and you accidentally paste and send it
- <guest_30> I need a server under 1 grand used for hosing a chatting web site, whats the best hardware configuration for that?
- <Kodiac> or speak to the wrong person on facebook for 5 minutes
- <guest_85> oh
- <Kodiac> guest_30: what do you mean chatting website
- <Kodiac> lol
- <guest_85> hes trying to host a server for a site, put simply
- <guest_30> like what we're on now
- <guest_30> yeah
- <guest_30> well... my uncle needs it
- <guest_85> how many people will be using the site
- <guest_30> and I dont know anything about servers, just d3esktops
- <Kodiac> so an irc server?
- <Kodiac> or a website with webpages?
- <guest_30> I'll have to ask, but I'm gonna assume around 200
- <guest_85> uh kodiac.. "failed to recognize sata0"
- <guest_85> oops
- <guest_85> wrong paste
- <guest_85> i mean uh kodiac... "and I dont know anything about servers, just d3esktops"
- <guest_85> try not to overwhelm em with server terms =P
- <Kodiac> ok then lets do thins simply guest_30 : what do you want the end user to use to chat
- <guest_85> guest_30, a server requires a much more powerful computer than that
- <guest_30> I just need a good hardware configuration for it
- <guest_30> what kind of processor, ram, hdd, ect.
- <camerongray> guest_30: What sort of chat platform is it and how many users to you plan on it getting?
- <guest_85> what im curious about is if millions of people will use it or just 30 or so
- <camerongray> Unless this is a massive site, you won't need much at all
- <Kodiac> ^
- <guest_85> exactly.
- <guest_85> im able to run a yawcam server with a 1.1 ghz 1 core processor
- <guest_30> ok, so do I need to grab ecc memory or non-ecc?
- <guest_85> ecc?
- <Hopebot> ECC (Error-Correction Code): http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/e/ecc.htm
- <camerongray> guest_30: Depends on the CPU which depends on the number of users...

- <camerongray> If you don't know then you are probably best to use something like Amazon Web Services (AWS) which can scale up and down very easily
- <guest_30> say theres 300 users or less?
- <camerongray> Very little power at all
- <camerongray> I'd really say to use some sort of VPS or Amazon Web Services
- <Kodiac> if you dont have important financial data on the website, Ecc isnt needed
- <guest_30> ok
- <guest_85> 300 users sounds like a lot to me. or maybe its because the only servers ive ever ran are minecraft and ftp, for sending stuff to my home pc
- <camerongray> Otherwise you'll have a server that's either not being utilised enough or that's struggling to cope
- <guest_30> so it would be like a normal desktop?
- <Kodiac> cameron's idea of amazon web service is a nice idea, its scalable and powerful, if you dont mind a small monthly fee
- <camerongray> guest_30: Do you have any real reason as to why you need a physical machine, that just gets a lot harder to maintain and manage?
- <guest_85> i just have this thing about home hosting all of my servers.
- <guest_85> its free but my problem is power gets annoying
- <Kodiac> lool
- <guest_30> I honestly don't know, like I said, it's my uncle who needs it, I just need to build it
- <guest_85> and internet speed
- <camerongray> guest_30: You'll need more information from your Uncle then
- <camerongray> guest_30: And suggest something like AWS - Much better option
- <guest_30> ok, i'll give him a call
- <Kodiac> i have to do school work, good day everyone :D
- <guest_85> wow i was just typing ask your uncle, with like a billion other lines and he said ok ill give him a call
- <camerongray> I home host one server that I use to store my files but I wouldn't host any production stuff there - Connection is too slow
- <camerongray> I colocate my main machine and use AWS for large web apps
- <guest_85> hey cameron, i was that dude who was trying to run android on a computer, remember me?
- <Kodiac> hope pcs are also easilly hackable because they dont keep up with the baddies
- <camerongray> guest_85: Yeah...
- <db100547> just to clear up memory ECC type is generally used is servers or workstations , and depends if the mobo will work with it , NON ECC is generally used in desaktop type pcs . and virtually akll desktops will work with it
- <camerongray> Kodiac: That's really up to the person keeping it up to date, a system like AWS is still a virtual machine so has the same security issues as a physical machine
- <Kodiac> true
- <guest_30> he says he will be hosting a chat room on his server, and there will be about 100 people on it or less
- <camerongray> guest_85: Then don't bother with a physical machine, get a VPS
- <guest_85> huh? what did i say about vps and stuff
- <guest_85> are you talking about that android thing i talked about like 2 weeks ago
- <Kodiac> think that was meant for guest_30
- <guest_30> well, he still wants a physical server..
- <camerongray> Oh, meant 30
- <guest_85> oh
- <Kodiac> ok then guest_30
- <camerongray> guest_30: Then he won't need much at all but point out that a VPS is a much better option here
- <guest_85> ok then
- <camerongray> You'd pay the same for a VPS than you'll pay in power for a physical machine and you get a faster connection and don't need to worry about keeping it online
- <Kodiac> guest_30 : and also ask him HOW he wants his users to chat..
- <guest_30> just like we're doing now
- <guest_30> chat room
- <guest_85> once the power went out when i was trying to publicly home host a server on an underpowered computer, like an idiot, and i freaked out a bunch
- <guest_85> i mean very underpowered, like 3.0 ghz 1 core processor
- <camerongray> guest_30: Then he'll require very little power, getting a physical machine for that would be silly
- --> guest_13 ([email protected]) has joined #computerhope
- <Kodiac> can i then propose somthing guest_30, why dont you use an irc server that alredy exists, and just create a room on those servers for your uncle's purposes
- <guest_85> dont expect to run an enormous server with any old home computer
- <guest_13> hi how do uninstall a program??
- <Kodiac> guest_13 wich program
- <guest_13> just in general
- <guest_30> so something like this won't require much power?
- <db100547> guest_13: control panel , add/remove programs
- <camerongray> guest_30: Not at all
- <Kodiac> guest_13 what is your operating system
- <guest_85> guest_13, what operating system (windows 7 is one) are you using
- <-- guest_13 ([email protected]) has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
- <guest_85> ...
- <guest_85> okay then
- <guest_85> i think we overcomplicated him
- <guest_30> ok, so I could just use a lower end core 2 duao with 3gb ddr2 ram and a 500gb hdd, and it would work well?
- <camerongray> guest_30: To put it into perspective, at uni we run an IRC network, hundreds if no thousands of users - That runs on a couple of SunFire v120 servers, they are ancient, have like 2gb RAM each and 650MHz SPARC CPUs
- <Kodiac> for a room exactly like this one, yes, plenty
- <guest_30> leaving room to expand if needed?
- <camerongray> guest_30: If you are intent on spending money on a physical machine and not getting a VPS then you would be best looking at something like an Intel Atom based system - Saves power costs
- <guest_30> ok
- <guest_85> uhh kodiac i think we overcomplicated guest_13
- <camerongray> But seriously, tell him to get a VPS, much better option, and cheaper/easier to upgrade in the future if needed
- <guest_30> what socket type would an intel atom be?
- <Kodiac> guest_85 well what operating system you are using, the old people in my building can answer lol
- <camerongray> Soldered to the motherboard
- <guest_85> my grandpa cant
- <db100547> guest_30: hope you now totally confused by camerongray 's change of systems , from what he started off suggesting . i wish you luck in getting what you really require . :D
