something like that is on the todo list for over half a year now. (a
generic interface to pass 3d/2d objects to functions and let return
functions 3d/2d objects - what you have described would be one of many
possible applications of something like that)

however - this would require some modifications in the OpenSCAD core and
unfortunately I don't have much time for improving OpenSCAD atm. Something
like this will be implemented for sure at some point at the future. but
don't hold your breath until then.. ;-)
