  2.
  3. Issue:
  4. Backflip's recent Reach run is clearly World Record. However, due to a faulty Xbox, the theater films did not save. Reach uses theater timing, and there is no way of knowing the theater timing in this case.
  5.
  6. Details:
  7. Backflip switched Xboxes from his normal Xbox to an (apparently faulty) one. This Xbox, the one he got his fastest run on, did not save the Theater films. Adding theater times is how we get the final time to list on the leaderboards.
  8. He discussed the issue in detail with the community and there is video of the whole run, with mic. The run is clearly single segment, there were no problems with the recording and there is no cheating.

  10.
  11. EightBitNacho (another Reach runner) attempted to manually retime the runs to correspond to theater timing. Nacho's manual method did not correspond exactly to theater times for known runs. His timing differed from the actual theater timing by 1:20-1:50.
  12.
  13. [ My explanation of this discrepancy:
  14. The game does not count loading times at all, including in-level loadzones, cutscene loads, and possibly other loading times that are not visually evident.
  15. I believe that the discrepancies between Nacho's method and the game's method are due to two things: 1) an incorrect understanding of where theater time starts and ends (by about 1:20); 2) human error in timing due to these loadzones and other unaccounted factors, which vary between runs.
  16. This is not a knock on Nacho, the truth is that none of us know the exact details of the method the game uses. However, I believe that despite our incomplete understanding, the game is consistent with itself and accounts for all gameplay, and therefore using theater time for HaloRuns leaderboards is still okay. HaloRuns admins Monopoli and goatrope agree. ]
  17.
  18. Facts:
  19. - Nacho's method times the WR run as 1:21:20 manual timing.
  20. - Using the difference between Nacho's method and the game's method, we know for a fact that Backflip's run is in the 1:19:xx range for theater time. See logs for details: http://pastebin.com/uaJiShJt
  21. The question is what time to list on the leaderboards.
  22.
  23. Summary:
  24. - The run is clearly and unambiguously the fastest run on record. There were no problems with the video recording and no cheating.
  25. - Theater time seems to be consistent with itself. HaloRuns admins tiburon, Monopoli, goatrope all agree on this point.
  26. - However, there is no unambiguous way to manually determine what the exact theater time would have been.
  27. - Attempts at manual timing show clear indications that the run would have been in the 1:19:xx range. The exact time is unknowable with our current understanding of the game.
  28.
  29. Ruling:
  30. The run will be listed on the HaloRuns leaderboard as 1:19:59 (the highest possible 1:19:xx time).
  31. It will be beaten by any lower 1:19:xx time.
