  1. Welcome to THE ULTIMATE DOOM!
  2. -----------------------------
  3. What you have here is a very special edition of DOOM. It
  4. contains a new, never-seen-before FOURTH EPISODE that makes
  5. the first three episodes look like a walk in the park! You
  6. also get 5 free hours of playtime on DWANGO, the DOOM Wide-Area
  7. Network Game Organization, where you can call up 24-hours a day
  8. and find someone to frag.
  9.
  10. Just run the DWANGO program and choose the server closest to you,
  11. tell the server you're a new user, enter your information, then
  12. log onto the server. Press the F5 key and choose Enter
  13. Authorization Number - type in the number that came with your
  14. ULTIMATE DOOM box.
  15.
  16. id Software respectfully requests that you do not modify the
  17. levels for the shareware version of DOOM. We feel that the
  18. distribution of new levels that work with the shareware version
  19. of DOOM will lessen a potential user's incentive to purchase the
  20. registered version.
  21.
  22. If you would like to work with modified levels of DOOM, we
  23. encourage you to purchase the registered version of the game.
  24.
  25. Make sure you read the DOOM FAQ v6.666 if you have any problems
  26. or are anxious to find out about the World of DOOM! The 4 files
  27. of the FAQ are DMFAQ66A.TXT, DMFAQ66B.TXT, etc. Enjoy!
  28.
  29. ------------------------------------------------------------
  30. Auxiliary programs
  31. ------------------------------------------------------------
  32.
  33. There are a number of auxiliary programs that come with DOOM. These
  34. are DM.EXE, the DeathManager you use as a front-end for network and
  35. modem play; DWANGO.EXE, the client software for the NEW multiplayer
  36. gaming environment of the future; IPXSETUP.EXE, the IPX Network Device
  37. Driver that enables you to play DOOM over an office network that uses
  38. the IPX protocol and SERSETUP.EXE, the Serial Device Driver that enables
  39. you to play DOOM over the modem or serial cable.
  40.
  41. The documentation for the DM.EXE program is named DM.TXT, the documentation
  42. for the DWANGO.EXE program is named DWANGO.TXT. The documentation for the
  43. IPXSETUP.EXE and SERSETUP.EXE programs follow.

  82. DOOM ADDENDUM
  83. ------------------------------------------------------------
  84. Welcome to DOOM. Before playing, you'll need to read the
  85. DOOM manual and this addendum which contains information for
  86. playing in Multiplayer mode, as well as technical support
  87. and troubleshooting instructions. To avoid compatibility
  88. errors, please make sure that your machine and network conform
  89. to the system requirements listed below.
  90.
  91. -------------------------------------------------------------
  92. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  93. -------------------------------------------------------------
  94. DOOM(TM) requires an IBM compatible 386 or better with 4 megs of
  95. RAM, a VGA graphics card, and a hard disk drive. A 486 or
  96. better, a Sound Blaster Pro(TM) or 100% compatible sound card
  97. is recommended. A network that uses the IPX protocol is
  98. required for network gameplay.
  99.
  100. -------------------------------------------------------------
  101. MULTIPLAYER MODE
  102. -------------------------------------------------------------
  103. GETTING STARTED
  104. -------------------------------------------------------------
  105. 1. Install DOOM as described in the manual.
  106.
  107. 2. Launch DOOM from the SETUP program, by going to the
  108. directory in which you installed DOOM, type SETUP, and press
  109. the ENTER key. (If you are installing DOOM for the first
  110. time the SETUP program will be automatically launched.)
  111. Unlike playing DOOM in single player mode, DOOM in
  112. multiplayer mode must be run either from the SETUP program
  113. or by using the command line parameters mentioned later in
  114. this addendum.
  115.
  116. 3. The SETUP program not only allows you to configure DOOM
  117. to your system but lets you tell DOOM information that is
  118. necessary for the multiplayer game, (i.e. number of players,
  119. skill level, mode, etc.) The SETUP program is simple to
  120. use--providing context sensitive help at the bottom of the
  121. screen.
  122.
  123. NUMBER OF PLAYERS: A maximum of four people can play
  124. multiplayer DOOM on a network.
  125.
  126. COMPATIBLE NETWORKS: To play multiplayer, you must have a
  127. network that uses the IPX protocol. Check your network
  128. manuals for information regarding your protocol. Novell
  129. networks use the IPX protocol.
  130.
  131. MULTIPLE GAMES ON THE NET: To play a multiplayer game while
  132. another group is also playing the multiplayer game, you'll
  133. need to change your network port address from the SETUP
  134. application. The port address tells your server where to
  135. send information that is sent over the network. Network
  136. addresses range from 1-64000. You should refer to the person
  137. in charge of your network for possible port addresses.
  138.
  139. -------------------------------------------------------------
  140. MULTIPLAYER INSTRUCTIONS
  141. -------------------------------------------------------------
  142. Many of the rules for playing DOOM change for the
  143. multiplayer game. Read the following information carefully
  144. before you begin to play DOOM in multiplayer mode.
  145.
  146. MENUS: When you activate the Options menu or submenus, the
  147. game KEEPS RUNNING so that other players can continue with
  148. the action. So it is best to find a safe place before
  149. adjusting screen sizes or sounds.
  150.
  151. UNPAUSE: A player may Pause the game by pressing the PAUSE
  152. key, but any other player can Unpause the game by pressing
  153. the PAUSE key again. Make sure it's OK with your buddies
  154. before taking a breather.
  155.
  156. SAVE: When you do a savegame during a network game, it saves
  157. on every player's system in the savegame slot you select,
  158. writing over whatever was there. Before saving the game,
  159. players should agree on a safe slot to save in.
  160.
  161. LOAD: You cannot load a saved game while playing a
  162. multiplayer game. To load a game everyone must quit from the
  163. current game and restart the game from the saved game. To
  164. start a game from a saved game, you can either select it
  165. from the SETUP program or identify it as a command line
  166. parameter.
  167.
  168. WEAPONS: When a player runs over a weapon, he picks it up,
  169. but the weapon remains in the game for other players to
  170. take. Note: Shotguns dropped by former human sergeants are
  171. removed from the game after being picked up or smashed.
  172.
  173. DEATH: If you die and restart in the level, previously taken
  174. items and destroyed monsters DON'T reappear. Even though
  175. you've died, other players have survived. We didn't want to
  176. undo all of their fine destruction by reviving every monster
  177. in the area. However, this also means the level will
  178. eventually run dry of monsters and ammunition. You'll have
  179. to decide when the level is played out.
  180.
  181. UNIFORM COLORS: In net games, each player's uniform is a
  182. different color. The color of your character is the color
  183. behind your face on the status bar. The colors are BROWN,
  184. INDIGO (black), GREEN, and RED.
  185.
  186. CHAT MODE: In a multiplayer game you can communicate with
  187. other players in the Chat mode. To enter into Chant mode and
  188. broadcast a message to all the players, press the letter t.
  189. A cursor will appear where your messaging is normally
  190. placed. To broadcast to a specific player, instead of
  191. pressing t you'll need to press the first letter of the
  192. player's color. (B)rown, (I)ndigo, (G)reen, and (R)ed. For
  193. example, to send a message to the brown character, you would
  194. press the letter b.
  195.
  196. CHAT MACROS: In a multiplayer game, you can send your own
  197. pre-defined macros (defined in the SETUP program) by initiating
  198. Chat mode (as stated above), then holding ALT and pressing the
  199. number key that corresponds to the macro you wish to send. For
  200. example, if macro #2 is "Eat it and die!", initiate Chat mode
  201. by pressing 'T', then hold down ALT and press 2.
  202.
  203. EXITING A LEVEL: When one player exits a level, all players
  204. instantly exit with him, regardless of their position or
  205. their status.
  206.
  207. -------------------------------------------------------------
  208. COOPERATIVE OR DEATHMATCH MODE
  209. -------------------------------------------------------------
  210. There are two ways to play multiplayer--DeathMatch and
  211. Cooperative. In Cooperative mode the players work together.
  212. In DeathMatch mode your mission is to kill everything that
  213. moves, including your buddies. You can choose which mode you
  214. wish to play from the SETUP application. The differences
  215. between Cooperative and DeathMatch mode are as follows:
  216.
  217. WHERE YOU START: In Cooperative mode each player begins in
  218. the same area. In DeathMatch mode the players begin in
  219. completely different areas--if you want to see your buddy
  220. you'll need to hunt him down. Plus, each time you die,
  221. you'll restart in one of several random locations.
  222.
  223. KEYS: Unlike in single-player or Cooperative mode gameplay,
  224. in DeathMatch mode the players start each location with the
  225. keys necessary for opening any locked door in that area.
  226.
  227. STATUS BAR: In DeathMatch mode the ARMS section on the
  228. status bar is replaced with "FRAG." The FRAG section
  229. displays the number of times you've killed your opponents.
  230.
  231. AUTOMAP: In Cooperative mode the Automap works the same way
  232. it does in single-player mode. Each player is represented by
  233. a different color arrow. In DeathMatch mode you won't
  234. receive the pleasure of seeing your opponents on the map.
  235. Just like the monsters, your friends could be just around
  236. the corner, and you won't know until you face them.
  237.
  238. SPY MODE: If you're playing in Cooperative mode, press F12
  239. to toggle through the other players' viewpoint(s). Press any
  240. other key to return to your view. You still retain your own
  241. status bar at the bottom, and if your view reddens from pain
  242. it is YOU, not your partner, who has been hit.
  243.
  244. INTERMISSION SCREENS: In both Cooperative and DeathMatch
  245. mode the intermission screen tallies your achievement. In
  246. Cooperative mode the intermission screen lists the
  247. achievements for all players in the game. In DeathMatch mode
  248. the intermission provides a death count on everyone, letting
  249. you know who killed whom.
  250.
  251. -------------------------------------------------------------
  252. DEATHMATCH MODE GAMEPLAY NOTES
  253. -------------------------------------------------------------
  254. The rules for completing or winning a DeathMatch game have
  255. intentionally been left general. Any player can exit an area
  256. and force all of the players to move to the next area. Also,
  257. there is no limit on how many kills are required to declare
  258. a player the winner. We decided to leave this up to you. You
  259. know what you like best!
  260.
  261. Note: Before you play DOOM in DeathMatch mode you should be
  262. familiar with the layout of every area in DOOM. As you know,
  263. in DeathMatch mode your startup location is random and often
  264. in an area that is very hostile.
  265.
  266. -------------------------------------------------------------
  267. MULTIPLAYER DEMO RECORDING
  268. -------------------------------------------------------------
  269. You can record your tournaments for posterity! To record multi-
  270. player demos, add the line "-record demoz" to the command-line.
  271. Make sure the other player is recording also, or it won't work.
  272. If you need more time, add the "-maxdemo <K>" option to increase
  273. demo buffer space. Make sure both of you specify the same amount.
  274. DOOM defaults to 128K of demo buffer space, to specify 1meg you
  275. would type "-maxdemo 1024" on the command-line.
  276.
  277. IF DOOM BOMBS TO DOS WITH A "Z_MALLOC" ERROR, YOU DON'T HAVE
  278. ENOUGH MEMORY FOR THE MAXDEMO AMOUNT SPECIFIED!
  279.
  280. When you wish to stop recording, press the Q or F10 keys and both
  281. players will exit to DOS. To play the demo back, merely type,
  282. "DOOM -playdemo demoz" and the demo will play back. To see the
  283. other player, press the F12 key. Press F12 to toggle between all
  284. players in the demo. The TAB key will display the automap.
  285.
  286. You can set the name of the demo file to anything you want. "demoz"
  287. was just an example name.
  288.
  289. -------------------------------------------------------------
  290. RUNNING DOOM FROM THE COMMAND LINE
  291. -------------------------------------------------------------
  292. Much of the information you give to DOOM through the SETUP
  293. program can be provided by passing program parameters to
  294. the appropriate device driver on the command line.
  295.
  296. NETWORK PLAY
  297. ------------
  298. When you want to run a network game, you use IPXSETUP.EXE which
  299. is the device driver for DOOM's network mode. The parameters
  300. are as follows:
  301.
  302. -NODES starts DOOM as a network game and sets the number of
  303. players who are going to play. If you don't specify the number
  304. of nodes, the default is 2.
  305. -nodes <# of players>
  306.
  307. -PORT sets the port from which to play DOOM multiplayer on
  308. the network. By setting a different port, more than one
  309. group of players can play DOOM on a single network.
  310. -port <# of the port>
  311.
  312. MODEM PLAY
  313. ----------
  314. When you want to play a modem or null-modem game, you need to
  315. run SERSETUP.EXE which is the device driver for DOOM's serial
  316. communications mode. The parameters are as follows:
  317.
  318. -DIAL tells the program which number to dial, if you're going
  319. to do the calling.
  320. -dial <phone number>
  321.
  322. -ANSWER puts your modem into Answer mode so someone can call
  323. you and play DOOM.
  324. -answer
  325.
  326. -COM1, -COM2, -COM3, -COM4 specifies which COM port your modem
  327. or serial cable is connected to. Very important!
  328. -com1
  329.
  330. -8250 tells SERSETUP to set the UART to 8250. Just in case your
  331. 16550 UART is acting up at the higher speed.
  332. -8250
  333.
  334. -IRQ sets the IRQ for the COM port.
  335. -irq <irq number>
  336.
  337. -PORT sets the COM I/O port that SERSETUP uses to communicate
  338. with your modem. To use hexadecimal, such as the number 0x3f8, you
  339. would type "-port 0x3f8".
  340. -port <port number>
  341.
  342. -<#> sets the baud rate of your COM port, overriding the value in
  343. the MODEM.CFG if you're running a modem game. Legal values are
  344. 9600, 14400, 38400, 57600.
  345. Example: -14400
  346.
  347. Note that to run a null-modem game, you must have a null-modem
  348. cable plugged into a serial port on both computers and each
  349. computer runs SERSETUP.EXE with a -COM# parameter as well as
  350. any General Parameters. Do not use the -ANSWER or -DIAL
  351. parameters, or SERSETUP will think you're using a modem. To get
  352. a null-modem cable, go to CompUSA or Radio Shack and say,"I need
  353. a null-modem cable to run a DOOM multiplayer game."
  354.
  355. VERY IMPORTANT!
  356. You will need to run the SETUP program and select Choose Modem
  357. from the Network/Modem/Serial menu so you can set your modem
  358. init string correctly. Merely select the modem and press Enter
  359. and SETUP will create a new MODEM.CFG file that corresponds to
  360. your modem (the MODEM.CFG file is used by SERSETUP for initing
  361. the modem.)
  362.
  363. If your modem is not in the list, you will most likely need to
  364. edit the MODEM.CFG file in the DOOM directory. The first line
  365. of the file is an initialization string that:
  366. * Turns off error-correction
  367. * Turns off data-compression
  368. The MODEM.CFG file has a Hayes-standard init string like this:
  369. AT Z S=46 &Q0 &D0
  370. You just add your own commands after the "AT Z " if your modem
  371. doesn't work with these settings -- dig up your modem manual for
  372. the correct settings.
  373.
  374. The second line is a hangup string used when you quit DOOM.
  375.
  376. The third line is the baud rate at which you want your COM port set.
  377. The legal settings are: 9600, 14400, 38400, 57600.
  378.
  379. If the modem connection isn't working when you call your friend,
  380. have him call you instead. Try setting the modem to GENERIC (in the
  381. SETUP.EXE program) if your modems don't connect.
  382.
  383. If you STILL can't get the modems to connect, both of you should
  384. run your favorite COMM programs and connect with 9600, no error
  385. correction and no data compression. Then quit the COMM program
  386. and keep the connection going. Then just run SERSETUP with a -COM#
  387. parameter (as if you were running a null-modem game) since you're
  388. already connected.
  389.
  390. If you had trouble connecting, but figured out some settings that
  391. work, please fax them to us at (214) 686-9288 so we can expand our
  392. modem init string database and perhaps have the SETUP program ask
  393. you for your modem type in a future version of DOOM.
  394.
  395. GENERAL PARAMETERS
  396. ------------------
  397. These parameters can be passed straight to DOOM, or passed
  398. to IPXSETUP or SERSETUP, which then pass them to DOOM.
  399.
  400. -LOADGAME allows you to start DOOM from a specified save
  401. game. Instead of using the saved game name, simply enter the
  402. number that corresponds to the slot you saved the game to on
  403. the SAVE GAME screen (0-5).
  404. -loadgame <# of the game>
  405.
  406. -DEATHMATCH starts DOOM as a DeathMatch game. If you don't
  407. enter DEATHMATCH as a command line parameter, DOOM will
  408. default to the Cooperative mode.
  409. -deathmatch
  410.
  411. -ALTDEATH specifies respawning items during DEATHMATCH.
  412. NOTE: Invulnerability and Invisibility do not respawn.
  413. -deathmatch -altdeath
  414.
  415. -SKILL sets the skill level (1-5) you wish to play. Only useful
  416. with -warp -- see below.
  417. -skill <# of skill level>
  418.
  419. -EPISODE sets the episode (1-3) you wish to play. The default
  420. episode is Episode One, Knee-Deep in the Dead.
  421. -episode <# of the episode>
  422.
  423. -CONFIG allows you to use your configuration file from any
  424. directory you choose. This is primarily for diskless workstations
  425. that don't have a C: drive to save config information to. You
  426. need to rename the default.cfg file created by the SETUP program
  427. to a directory and name of your choosing to avoid conflicts.
  428. -config <pathname> ex. -config f:\doom\data\myconfig.cfg
  429.
  430. -NOMONSTERS allows you to start playing with NO MONSTERS running
  431. around! This is great for DeathMatch where, really, the monsters
  432. just get in the way. Only useful with -warp -- see below.
  433. -nomonsters
  434.
  435. -RECORD tells DOOM to record the game you are starting.
  436. Demo files will be saved as <filename>.lmp.
  437. -record <filename>
  438.
  439. -MAXDEMO xxx If you want to record a demo bigger than 128k, use
  440. this option. xxx will be the size (in kilobytes) of the demo.
  441. example -MAXDEMO 1024 will record a 1 megabyte demo.
  442. -record <filename> -maxdemo xxx
  443.
  444. -RESPAWN tells DOOM that, yes, you are a badass, and yes, you
  445. want all the monsters to respawn around 8 seconds after you kill
  446. them. The NIGHTMARE skill level already does this. Note that
  447. using -respawn and -nomonsters at the same time is a dumb thing
  448. to do. Only useful with -warp -- see below.
  449. -respawn
  450.
  451. -TURBO xxx gives you a speed boost. This is great in DeathMatch!
  452. The value xxx can be from 0 to 250. The other player(s) will be
  453. notified of your speed increase! THIS IS CONSIDERED CHEATING
  454. IN SINGLE PLAYER MODE!
  455. -turbo xxx
  456.
  457. @<filename> will allow you to specify a Response file that DOOM
  458. will read additional command-line parameters from. For example,
  459. typing 'DOOM @MYPARMS' will tell DOOM to look in the MYPARMS file
  460. for additional command-line parameters. The file format is simply
  461. one parameter per line with a carriage return to terminate the line.
  462. Each parameter is typed exactly as you would type it on the DOS
