“so” or “so that” when it explains the purpose is a subordinating conjunction

consequence: It was raining, so I got wet.

purpose: I have an umbrella so I won’t get wet. = So I won’t get wet, I have an umbrella.

p. 193 exercise 5 - Combine the pairs of sentences with a coordinating conjunction. There are often multiple ways to do this.
1 Jeff likes cleaning, but Matt doesn’t.
  Jeff likes cleaning, but not Matt. (This could mean Jeff likes cleaning and Jeff doesn’t like Matt.)
2 Jeff may go home for a visit or travel to France on his vacation.
	(He’ll probably do one or the other, not both.)
3 Neither Matt nor Jeff plan to return to their hometowns to live.
  Matt doesn’t plan to return to his hometown to live, and neither does Jeff.
  …, and Jeff doesn’t either.
  …, nor does Jeff.
4 Jeff likes getting up early, but Matt doesn’t.
5 (Both) Jeff and Matt always wanted to have a dog.
  Jeff always wanted to have a dog, and Matt did too.
  …, and so did Matt.
6 Matt and Jeff might take the dog to the park this afternoon.
  Either Matt or Jeff might take the dog to the park this afternoon.
  Matt might take the dog to the park this afternoon, or Jeff might.
7 Matt likes dancing and meeting friends at nightclubs.
  (“Matt likes meeting friends and dancing at nightclubs.” could mean he likes dancing at nightclubs and he also likes meeting friends anywhere.)
8 Both Jeff and Matt come from small towns: Matt from Kansas and Jeff from Wisconsin.
  Matt comes from a small town in Kansas and Jeff comes from one in Wisconsin.
  Matt and Jeff come from small towns in Kansas and Wisconsin, respectively.
