I'm not sure how I feel about that dichotomy. I think I recall some pre-release stuff which was focused on how she's ugly or whatever, and it seemed to mostly be pandering to white knight instincts, etc. And I think part of the message in the main game is how her scarring doesn't bother her much and it's mostly the PTSD or something. Anyway I just don't like the line.
