get a hit, wait for the animation to come back up, and as soon as that starts (there's usually a creaking noise as well), press A on keyboard, or whatever you set to your flute button

Another thing to note on it's movement: if you are underneath where it lands when it jumps across the battlefield, then it will jump back to the other side to avoid you
if you are by its feet I think you are fine
but I might be wrong about that part. Also, on the second hit you can be underneath
