- \\ATB Settings//
- {CLOUD}
- “ATB{, }or Active Time Battle{, }is the system
- that governs when a character or enemy
- is ready to take their turn in battle.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “Select {CYAN}[Wait]{WHITE} from ATB on the Config Menu.
- This ATB setting has all the gauges 'freeze'
- while you select commands for your team.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “{CYAN}[Wait]{WHITE} is generally the most useful of the
- three ATB settings{, }and can be used to
- optimise your party's turns & speed.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “{CYAN}[Recommended]{WHITE} ATB is a strange setting.
- The gauge is supposed to freeze during attack
- animations{, }but will often not do this.
- Recommended is{, }uh{, }not recommended.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “Finally{, }{CYAN}[Active]{WHITE} keeps the gauges moving
- even while selecting commands.
- It's dangerous to use{, }but can help nullify a
- fast enemy's speed & turn advantage.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “Switching ATB modes should be the first step
- toward building a strategy against tough
- enemies and bosses!”
- \\ATB Wait Trick//
- {CLOUD}
- “The 'Wait' trick is a way of making the
- best use of your team's speed to gain
- a turn advantage over the enemy.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “Set your ATB to {CYAN}[Wait]{WHITE} and when one of
- your characters executes their turn,
- open a command list to 'freeze' the
- ATB gauges of the enemy.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “The idea is to 'cover' each other's turns
- and keep the enemy from charging their
- ATB gauge for as long as possible,
- allowing you to get multiple turns.”
- \\Damage Mitigation//
- {CLOUD}
- “There are many ways to reduce the damage you
- take in battle{, }and which should be considered
- when taking on tough opponents.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “First of all{, }having a character in the back row
- reduces the damage you take from
- physical attacks by 50%. You can swap
- between the two using Change.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “Second{, }Barrier and MBarrier reduce damage
- from physical and magical attacks by
- another 50%{, }this stacks with Defend in
- the case of Barrier.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “Third{, }you can use the Sadness status to reduce
- all damage by 30%{, }which again stacks with
- other methods of damage reduction. It slows
- the rate at which limit breaks fill{, }though.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “Finally{, }there's %-based boosts to defence and
- magic defence. Hero Drinks and Dragon Force
- both provide %-boosts to your stats{, }up to
- a maximum of 100%.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “And this goes without saying, but equipping
- strong armour and accessories that boost
- Vitality and Spirit can also reduce damage.
- Good luck out there!”
- \\Character Roles//
- {CLOUD}
- “Each character has a specific set of strengths
- and weaknesses that make them better
- suited to certain roles in battle than others.
- Here's a quick idea of that.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “[Tank]
- A character with high defence and spirit
- soaks up damage using Cover Materia.
- For best results{, }have them use the Defend
- command as well!”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “[Damage: Physical]
- A character with high strength takes this
- role. It's great for blitzing through lots of
- monsters as attacks are quicker than spells.
- They lack versatility{, }though.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “[Damage: Spellcaster]
- Anyone with a high magic stat takes this role.
- You can decimate groups and tough enemies
- with the right spells. Just make sure to have
- plenty of Materia and MP.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “[Support]
- It's a bad idea to have everyone on the
- offensive for tough fights. It can be a good
- idea to designate someone to using healing
- and protective magic{, }maybe the Tank.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “Of course{, }those are just some very
- general examples. You'll want to experiment
- with different set-ups to find the right one.
- Let's go through a quick run-down of each
- character's strengths and weaknesses.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “[Cloud]
- All-round stats, has a slight edge in Strength
- and Magic. Can take on a number of roles.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “[Barret]
- High Vitality and Strength.
- Low Dexterity and Magic.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “[Tifa]
- High Strength and Dexterity.
- Low Magic and Spirit.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “[Aeris]
- High Magic and Spirit.
- Low Strength and Vitality.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “[Red XIII]
- All-round stats, has a slight edge in Dexterity.
- Has a slight deficiency in Vitality and Spirit.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “[Yuffie]
- High Dexterity and Magic.
- Low Vitality and Spirit.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “[Cait Sith]
- High Vitality, Spirit, and Luck.
- Low Strength, Magic, and Dexterity.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “[Vincent]
- High Magic and Vitality.
- Low Dexterity and Spirit.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “[Cid]
- High Strength, Vitality, and Luck.
- Low Magic, Spirit, and Dexterity.”
- {NEW PAGE}
- “That's all of 'em. Remember to take their
- limit breaks and equipment into
- account as well.”
- \\Status Effects//
- [Sleep]
- Targets under Sleep cannot act and only
- wake up when struck by a physical attack.
- Use Magic to hit enemies under Sleep.
- {NEW PAGE}
- [Poison]
- Inflicts incremental damage equal to 1/32
- of the afflicted's Max HP. It should be noted
- that Poison 'breaks' Defend.
- {NEW PAGE}
- [Fury]
- Accuracy of attacks drop, including spells.
- But the rate at which the limit gauge
- builds increases dramatically.
- {NEW PAGE}
- [Sadness]
- Decreases damage taken by 30% but
- the limit gauge will build much slower.
- Useful for defence.
- {NEW PAGE}
- [Petrify]
- Disables a character and makes them
- immune to damage. Slow-Numb inflicts
- this when the timer runs down.
- {NEW PAGE}
- [Confuse]
- A character will start randomly attacking
- themselves and their allies. Enemies cannot
- evade attacks while Confused.

- automatically. Can be beneficial in the right
- circumstances but treat with caution.

- this applies to 'standard' spells only{, }
- such as the ones used by the party.
- {NEW PAGE}
- [Paralyze]
- Temporarily disables a target. Very useful
- for getting around an enemy's counters or
- special AI triggers.
- {NEW PAGE}
- [Darkness]
- Decreases the accuracy of physical attacks.
- This only affects the player team, monsters
- are unaffected!
- {NEW PAGE}
- [Mini]

- attacks deal 1 damage. Certain special
- enemy attacks ignore this though!
- {NEW PAGE}

- Target attack power is greatly reduced
- and they are unable to cast spells.
- Certain enemy special attacks still work!
- {NEW PAGE}

- A reverse-regen effect that reduces HP
- over time. Use Regen to nullify it or Dispel
- to get rid of it.
- {NEW PAGE}
- [Peerless]
- Invincibility. Can now be removed with
- Dispel or Debarrier.
- Can be prevented with Resist.
- {NEW PAGE}
- [Resist]
- Prevents statuses from being applied.
- This extends to positive statuses so
- be careful when using it.
- {NEW PAGE}
- [Deathforce]
- A handy status that prevents instant-death.
- Try applying this while under Death Sentence
- to avoid being killed.
