It initially was kicked off with http://thezoepost.wordpress.com/ , in which Eron Gjoni released an account of his relationship with one Zoe Quinn because he felt he had been emotionally abused by her and wanted to warn others that were acquainted with her about this behaviour. Several people noticed that one of the people that she had been sleeping with was a member of Kotaku, one Nathan Grayson. Nathan Grayson had written positive coverage on Quinn on Kotaku, so these people were wondering why there was no mention of this fact in the post, and were wondering about the conflict of interest this created. Other examples of people having close relationships and subsequently writing about each other emerged, one involving one roommate writing an article about the other. This information hit a lot of people when Total Biscuit made a twitlonger about the whole thing, and it really exploded when conversation around this topic was censored on Reddit and many, many other sites. This is where Zoe Quinn's involvement ends with #GamerGate. Or, at least, should have.

The doxxing and harrassing of her and others were committed by people outside even the #TheQuinnspiracy community. Misogyny and even the female gender was hardly a part of the conversation until it was forced into it by the coverage #GamerGate received and the accusations that the abuse these women tragically suffered had us to blame. Archives from 4chan of that time show that anyone actually endorsing threats or harassment were responded to with dismissal and rejection.
