  1. Q: Why are you playing on Japanese?
  2. A: It is faster.
  3.
  4. Q: How are you playing on Japanese?
  5. A: I used homebrew to change the region of my Wii. I am still playing on a disc.
  6.
  7. Q: Isn't that cheating?
  8. A: No, I am still using the disc so it is the same as if I was running it normally on a Japanese GameCube/Wii. The only things currently considered cheating would be Emulator or USB load.
  9.
  10. Q: What makes it faster?
  11. A: You can skip the buzzy beetle fight in chapter 4 (30 seconds), fights start slightly faster in chapter 3 (about 20-25 seconds), Frankie's wedding ring for his trouble is in a different location (10~ seconds), shops have slightly less text (5-10 seconds), and some chapter start screens are faster (5-15~ seconds). I have yet to test anything else. Text seems to scroll the same speed but I am not sure. I estimate Japanese is faster by 1-2 minutes.
  12.
  13. Q: What else is different?
  14. A: Japanese in general is harder. Keelhaul has more fuzzies and they are harder to dodge, the tile glitch in X-Naut fortress only has 2 lit panels instead of 3 to stay on, and you can't superguard Armored Harriers. You have the risk of dying from a Spinia in Rogueport sewers between chapters 3 and 4 because you do not auto-heal after chapters. There's also some minor things like Paper Mode, Plane mode camera and Spring Jump properties are treated differently than English. You can not skip the text at the start of required fights. Japanese overall seems less polished with the way Mario interacts with cutscenes but these do not effect speed runs.
  15.
  16. Q: How can you read the chapter 3 conditions?
  17. A: I memorized unique symbols and correlate them to a specific condition. I can not read/understand Japanese.
  18.
  19. Q: How do you know Doopliss' name on Japanese?
  20. A: Memorized.
