  1. (07:02:50 AM) Mimness: Alrighty, let's get this party started.
  2. (07:02:54 AM) Ongaku: and some Syrian too
  3. (07:02:55 AM) Cheeseness: We're not far from starting - anybody who wants to invite friends should do so
  4. (07:02:55 AM) Northensnow: I've only read about the cat hair moustache puzzle. Figuring that out must have been a rite of passage to adulthood in many small communities
  5. (07:03:08 AM) Cheeseness: Ooh, lookslike we're going live now
  6. (07:03:14 AM) Ongaku: ahahaha
  7. (07:03:26 AM) elif_zibumi [4ea2fd3f@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  8. (07:03:31 AM) Cheeseness: Hey elif_zibumi
  9. (07:03:42 AM) elif_zibumi: Hi everyone!
  10. (07:03:44 AM) Ongaku: that puzzle had me pinned down, it's a shame I never finished that game
  11. (07:03:48 AM) Cheeseness: Aww
  12. (07:03:51 AM) elif_zibumi: Hey Cheeseness :)
  13. (07:04:21 AM) Ongaku: I have a book from Steven Ince on writting for adventure games
  14. (07:04:30 AM) Ongaku: its very interesting
  15. (07:04:35 AM) Mimness: Awesome 'knitting' animation
  16. (07:04:35 AM) Ongaku: Steve*
  17. (07:04:42 AM) Syd: The kicker with the cat hair mustache puzzle was that the guy you were impersonating didn't even have a mustache.
  18. (07:04:51 AM) Ongaku: yup
  19. (07:05:31 AM) Northensnow: Yeah. I can see the logic behind trying to hide your features, but it's extremely counter intuitive when you are playing a game
  20. (07:05:45 AM) Ongaku: btw I mention Steve Ince beacause he worked as a writter for broken sword ~
  21. (07:05:51 AM) Cheeseness: Oh, neat
  22. (07:06:02 AM) Naron [5858f839@hide-BF4D4B18.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  23. (07:06:04 AM) Ongaku: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Ince
  24. (07:06:08 AM) Cheeseness: Hi Naron
  25. (07:06:13 AM) Naron: Hi Cheese
  26. (07:06:24 AM) elif_zibumi: this lady always makes me laugh... too observant :)
  27. (07:06:42 AM) Ongaku: the details on this game are awesome
  28. (07:06:51 AM) Ongaku: the trucks passing by on the distance
  29. (07:07:01 AM) Cheeseness: So, we didn't have much time to poke around with settings during the week (things are crazy busy here at the moment). If it gets too out of sync, let me know and I'll get Mim to stop and start the stream again
  30. (07:07:49 AM) elif_zibumi: you know what, this is the first time i get a voody lady vibe from this lovely lady... maybe its the words she uses
  31. (07:08:15 AM) Northensnow: She reminds me more of Madame Xima, from CoMI
  32. (07:08:24 AM) Syd: http://i.imgur.com/8rmi1Cv.jpg
  33. (07:08:40 AM) Cheeseness: :D
  34. (07:08:41 AM) elif_zibumi: Xima is a better match :)
  35. (07:09:18 AM) Ongaku: awesome knitting workd Syd, did you met the lady from broken sword ?
  36. (07:09:27 AM) foboman [5d2a2481@hide-B64552F4.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  37. (07:09:44 AM) Syd: I didn't make that, I had found it on the internet a while back.
  38. (07:10:31 AM) Ongaku: If someone creates a course on classic adventures games, the first class on designing puzzles should be about that puzzle :D
  39. (07:10:58 AM) Syd: "Puzzles and Logic: What NOT To Do"
  40. (07:11:26 AM) Northensnow: Ron Gilbert already wrote something about it on his site
  41. (07:11:56 AM) Syd: I can forgive a puzzle if it at least makes sense in retrospect. :P
  42. (07:12:04 AM) Mimness: Lovely pants...
  43. (07:12:16 AM) Ongaku: I wish i could buy that guy a beer and talk about game design over an afternoon
  44. (07:12:20 AM) Ongaku: that would be awesoe
  45. (07:12:26 AM) Cheeseness: I kinda like zany, really stupid puzzles sometimes
  46. (07:12:43 AM) Ongaku: like torins passage
  47. (07:12:45 AM) Cheeseness: Ongaku: If you live in Australia, you should come to Melbourne in a fortnight:D
  48. (07:12:47 AM) Ongaku: salt thingy
  49. (07:13:15 AM) Ongaku: I live just about on the other side of the planet :D Portugal
  50. (07:13:20 AM) Cheeseness: (or if you don't live in Australia and are heading to PAX Aus, you should come to the DF meetup - Ron's coming :D )
  51. (07:13:28 AM) Ongaku: but I heard about the Melbourne jams
  52. (07:13:37 AM) Ongaku: awesome
  53. (07:13:45 AM) Cheeseness: This reminds me of the costume shop in Monkey 2
  54. (07:14:00 AM) Cheeseness: But that's probably just because it's a costume shop
  55. (07:15:07 AM) Syd: Costume/mask shops seem to be not that uncommon in adventure games, but it makes sense when you think about disguises coming into play in puzzles.
  56. (07:15:59 AM) elif_zibumi: Let me smell that... one of the weird responses in adventure games for sure.
  57. (07:16:11 AM) Mimness: KAAAAAHN!
  58. (07:17:27 AM) Northensnow: "Hey, I just casually came into your apartment. I guess you didn't let me in since you seem surprised!"
  59. (07:17:38 AM) Cheeseness: heh
  60. (07:17:46 AM) elif_zibumi: :)
  61. (07:18:02 AM) Northensnow: I can't remember, did the knitting lady tell George how to open the door?
  62. (07:18:25 AM) foboman: Yes, If I remember correctly.
  63. (07:18:26 AM) Ongaku: well not the quite the classic adventure game but shenme's "where can i find some sailors" for on my top 5 of the weirdest :D
  64. (07:18:34 AM) Syd: Only in video games can you walk into someone's home uninvited and the most you'll get is mild surprise or annoyance.
  65. (07:18:36 AM) elif_zibumi: She said it's open but he'll have to push a bit
  66. (07:18:53 AM) Ongaku: Syd or break some jars
  67. (07:19:00 AM) Northensnow: Ok, I missed that part. I though they removed it.
  68. (07:19:11 AM) Syd: Break all their stuff and take anything you think is useful, and leave without saying a word, heh
  69. (07:19:55 AM) Northensnow: And here's where the first death instance was
  70. (07:20:08 AM) foboman: This guy... this guy keeps dying and appearing AGAIN until Broken Sword 4
  71. (07:20:09 AM) Ongaku: true
  72. (07:20:24 AM) elif_zibumi: There was an interesting forum topic on this on adventuregamers. Some of the gamers told they felt horrible like a thief while intruding and taking stuff.
  73. (07:20:46 AM) Ongaku: the last time i played this game was the ds version
  74. (07:21:04 AM) Northensnow: I don't think I'd be disdained if I was born "with it"
  75. (07:21:09 AM) Ongaku: from what i recall it was quite faithful
  76. (07:21:17 AM) Ongaku: and revamped
  77. (07:21:50 AM) Syd: I think my nephew has the iOS version of this game.
  78. (07:22:11 AM) Cheeseness: Is it any different?
  79. (07:22:17 AM) Syd: I don't know.
  80. (07:22:28 AM) Ongaku: the ds version was the directors cut
  81. (07:22:51 AM) Ongaku: but i don't know where that differs from the original
  82. (07:23:27 AM) Syd: iOS version is apparently pretty similar to this one from what I've heard.
  83. (07:23:39 AM) Syd: Just with a touch-friendly interface
  84. (07:23:40 AM) Ongaku: hahah marks and spencers
  85. (07:24:23 AM) Syd: KHAAAN
  86. (07:25:21 AM) Ongaku: really like the characters and writting on this one
  87. (07:25:57 AM) Mimness: Sassy...
  88. (07:26:29 AM) Cheeseness: Is this the same actress as the umm robust woman from Beneath a Steel Sky?
  89. (07:26:45 AM) Syd: Dohohoho
  90. (07:27:12 AM) Ongaku: Hmm i don't remember the voices on bass but it may be
  91. (07:27:22 AM) Eiphel [5c0c17ee@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  92. (07:27:27 AM) Eiphel: Hey, I caught one for once
  93. (07:27:33 AM) Syd: Hey Eiphel
  94. (07:27:34 AM) foboman: The iOS, DS, Android and Wii version are identical.
  95. (07:27:43 AM) foboman: They're made with the same engine.
  96. (07:27:44 AM) Ongaku: oh there's a wii version
  97. (07:27:48 AM) Ongaku: I didn't know that
  98. (07:27:52 AM) Eiphel: Oh, she's my favourite character in the game
  99. (07:27:57 AM) Eiphel: Albeit I've forgotten her name
  100. (07:28:04 AM) Mimness: I sort of love this pervy old lady.
  101. (07:28:07 AM) Northensnow: Lady Piermont
  102. (07:28:10 AM) foboman: Furthermore, this version is identical to the others.
  103. (07:28:20 AM) foboman: ((of the Director's Cut)
  104. (07:28:28 AM) elif_zibumi: I have to go dear adventure friends. See you next time and have fun...
  105. (07:28:37 AM) Northensnow: She's very charismatic, and helpful as well.
  106. (07:28:39 AM) Ongaku: cya elif_zibumi
  107. (07:28:40 AM) Syd: Bye elif_zibumi
  108. (07:28:48 AM) foboman: Sadly, the PC version is the one that mainly suffered from this multiplatform thingy
  109. (07:28:57 AM) elif_zibumi left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  110. (07:29:22 AM) Ongaku: so what about the new kickstarter boot up, what do you think of the art style they're going for ?
  111. (07:29:33 AM) Eiphel: How did the PC version suffer? (I've only played the PC director's cut so I have nothing to compare to)
  112. (07:30:01 AM) foboman: The reason is the resolution. PC runs the game at costum resolutions, and the problem becomes clear with higher resolutions:
  113. (07:30:22 AM) Eiphel: Ahh yes. I did notice that
  114. (07:30:32 AM) foboman: The sprites, sometimes, are horribly blurry and foggy. Even the frames they're made of are lesser than the original version.
  115. (07:30:40 AM) Northensnow: The new art style looks nice, although I preferred the old one. At least in the next game it will be consistent all across the board
  116. (07:30:50 AM) foboman: They're, simply, badly upscaled.
  117. (07:30:50 AM) Eiphel: I really like the style they're using for five
  118. (07:31:15 AM) Eiphel: This hotel section generally is my favourite part of the first game, I think.
  119. (07:31:42 AM) foboman: This wasn't a "bad" choice. It was for the game to be made for low-end devices like the DS and Phones.
  120. (07:32:16 AM) foboman: You see, the blue dots that appears on hotspots weren't there in the original.
  121. (07:32:56 AM) Eiphel: I thought the blue dots were a good idea. Having them appear when you were in the general area without having to find the precise pixel.
  122. (07:32:59 AM) foboman: They're here for the touch devices: when you put your finger on the screen and move it around they become clearer as long as you move the finger nearer to them.
  123. (07:33:40 AM) Northensnow: It's a bit desynchronized
  124. (07:33:41 AM) foboman: That's of course a mandatory thing as it's impossible to do pixel hunting on a small screen like an iPod's one.
  125. (07:34:19 AM) foboman: Ever tried playing Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade with SCUMMVN on a mobile device? Pure hell.
  126. (07:34:26 AM) Ongaku: lolool
  127. (07:34:31 AM) Ongaku: i abide to that foboman
  128. (07:34:35 AM) Syd: Yeah, I think it might be a good idea to restart the stream and get it back in sync after this scene ends
  129. (07:34:43 AM) Eiphel: I tried to get Loom to run on SCUMMVM on my Nexus but it wouldn't
  130. (07:35:02 AM) Ongaku: i got the game running well but the interface makes you want to jump out of the window
  131. (07:35:07 AM) foboman: At the start, when you have to pick the tape ball which is made of ONE SINGLE PIXEL on the back of the library was just frustrating.
  132. (07:35:12 AM) Ongaku: not Loom, the Indy one
  133. (07:35:42 AM) Eiphel: Never played Last Crusade, but Fate of Atlantis was ace
  134. (07:35:49 AM) Cheeseness: I wish there was more you could poke around with in that room
  135. (07:35:50 AM) Eiphel: I lost my save before I finished it though
  136. (07:36:08 AM) foboman: Both Last Crusade and Fate of Atlantis are great.
  137. (07:36:24 AM) Ongaku: this is the part where you can die
  138. (07:36:24 AM) Northensnow: She keeps Moet et Chandon, in her pretty cabinet.
  139. (07:36:25 AM) foboman: Last Crusade it's great because it's hard even knowing perfectly the movie.
  140. (07:36:44 AM) Northensnow: (Killer Queen reference)
  141. (07:36:55 AM) Eiphel: The whole trials scene at the end of the film is practically write out of an adventure game puzzle anyway
  142. (07:36:55 AM) Ongaku: i like the jabs they make at the movies and lucas stuff
  143. (07:36:59 AM) Eiphel: *right
  144. (07:37:05 AM) Cheeseness: We might restart the stream in a sec to get the audio back in sync
  145. (07:37:07 AM) Cheeseness: Don't panic :D
  146. (07:37:25 AM) Northensnow: I think she has to open the other side of the wardrobe
  147. (07:37:38 AM) Mimness: I think I have to go outside
  148. (07:37:43 AM) Northensnow: although I guess she already played this part, right?
  149. (07:38:12 AM) Ongaku: nice pants khaan !
  150. (07:38:17 AM) Northensnow: Oh right, that's how it was
  151. (07:38:22 AM) foboman: Now, in the orginal here you can die if you don't enter the wardrobe.
  152. (07:38:29 AM) foboman: It's not automated.
  153. (07:38:34 AM) Mimness: I didn't have a choice.
  154. (07:38:36 AM) Mimness: Ahh.
  155. (07:38:55 AM) Mimness: Alrighty, let's restart the stream
  156. (07:39:03 AM) Mimness: One second please ^_^
  157. (07:39:05 AM) Eiphel: Have you guys played Resonance for the club?
  158. (07:39:06 AM) foboman: I remember ragequitting when he opened the wardrobe because I thought I was gone for.
  159. (07:39:24 AM) Ongaku: i haven't finished Resonance yet, had to get back on it
  160. (07:39:25 AM) Cheeseness: Alrighty,w e should be back now - let us know if you don't see anything
  161. (07:39:30 AM) Cheeseness: Eiphel: We haven't, but we should
  162. (07:39:33 AM) foboman: I wanted to buy it. But then gave priority to other things.
  163. (07:39:33 AM) Ongaku: have*
  164. (07:39:37 AM) Eiphel: I finished it last night, thought it was excellent
  165. (07:39:43 AM) Northensnow: Ok, now it's fine
  166. (07:39:56 AM) foboman: Yep, perfect.
  167. (07:40:04 AM) Syd: I think Gemini Rue is the only Wadjet Eye game we've done so far
  168. (07:40:10 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah
  169. (07:40:14 AM) Ongaku: really liked gemini rue
  170. (07:40:19 AM) Syd: Primordia would be a game to consider in the future as well
  171. (07:40:28 AM) Ongaku: I bought that on the bundle
  172. (07:40:29 AM) Eiphel: I bought the Wadjet Eye bundle in the GOG sale t'other day, so I have them all to play (except Resonance now)
  173. (07:40:31 AM) Cheeseness: Gemini Rue was great. We had Joshua Nuernburger join us
  174. (07:40:40 AM) foboman: I remember having a problem with Gemini Rue, it would crash every time I tried to save.
  175. (07:40:41 AM) Ongaku: still haven't touched it
  176. (07:42:43 AM) Babar [~Miranda@1B1D7CB1.42B3BBFB.83382450.IP] entered the room.
  177. (07:43:14 AM) Eiphel: I do love the way she's says 'Helloooo George'
  178. (07:43:23 AM) Syd: Hey Babar
  179. (07:44:12 AM) Babloyi [Miranda@4759B67A.8B70BB8A.83382450.IP] entered the room.
  180. (07:44:27 AM) Mimness: Let's try getting past the gangsters shall we?
  181. (07:44:31 AM) Northensnow: Here, if you attempt to leave with the parchment you get killed if I'm not mistaken
  182. (07:44:38 AM) Northensnow: in the original version, I mean
  183. (07:44:41 AM) Mimness: Darn
  184. (07:44:41 AM) Cheeseness: We should save and try it
  185. (07:44:59 AM) Cheeseness: Oh, Mim says you can't
  186. (07:45:02 AM) foboman: here if you heard the dubbing was clearly different.
  187. (07:45:04 AM) Northensnow: In this version you can't die in any way
  188. (07:45:06 AM) Mimness: I keep trying to kill George and he just won't die.
  189. (07:45:12 AM) Ongaku: lololol
  190. (07:45:18 AM) Ongaku: he's tough
  191. (07:45:29 AM) Mimness: Too smart for our amusement
  192. (07:45:42 AM) foboman: That's because they added those lines in order to justify the fact that George won't go out.
  193. (07:45:43 AM) Northensnow: they prevent you from picking those options, just like he automatically went to the wardrobe before
  194. (07:45:49 AM) Babar left the room (quit: Ping timeout: 182 seconds).
  195. (07:46:03 AM) foboman: I think the fault here is because the game was going on DS and Wii.
  196. (07:46:04 AM) Eiphel: I'm never quite sure what I think about being able to die in adventure games - the problem is usually it's not a main mechanic so that it crops up like, once or twice without warning or being very well executed and is just annoying.
  197. (07:46:51 AM) foboman: I think that dying in an adventure is a valid mechanic, but only in games that actually can have it.
  198. (07:47:01 AM) foboman: Broken Sword is one of these.
  199. (07:47:23 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah, I think that it can set up some worthwhile tension and sense of consequence
  200. (07:47:29 AM) foboman: Monkey Island is not, and in fact they even go all the way right to ridiculize the death in adventure games (the fake death screen)
  201. (07:47:29 AM) Eiphel: I think if you have it you need to build your game around the fact it's included, rather than add it in to a couple of puzzles later on
  202. (07:47:33 AM) Northensnow: Exciting music swelling up, aaand-AWKWARD CUT!
  203. (07:47:35 AM) Mimness: Why's he being so aggressive here? O_o Silly George.
  204. (07:47:54 AM) Mimness: And then he hits on her... *Eye roll*
  205. (07:48:11 AM) Eiphel: Yeah, George hitting on Nico is really awkwardly written and very aggressive
  206. (07:48:18 AM) Eiphel: Especially later on when the museum guy is around
  207. (07:48:23 AM) Cheeseness: One of the many ways in which George is irritating :D
  208. (07:48:39 AM) foboman: I think it's his character. It's just that they don't show much of it.
  209. (07:48:40 AM) Eiphel: I think it's even worse at the start of 2
  210. (07:48:54 AM) foboman: In Broken Sword 3 and 4 he's quite the gigolo.
  211. (07:49:16 AM) Cheeseness: He pretty daft as well >_<
  212. (07:49:16 AM) Northensnow: More don juan than gigolo
  213. (07:49:21 AM) Babloyi left the room (quit: Ping timeout: 180 seconds).
  214. (07:49:34 AM) Cheeseness: Northensnow: Are you suggesting he's suave?
  215. (07:49:35 AM) Mimness: This bit's totally weird.
  216. (07:49:50 AM) Babar [~Miranda@AB24913D.4B2AC2CC.83382450.IP] entered the room.
  217. (07:49:51 AM) Eiphel: I don't feel like George is very well characterised really. Nico is much better (in spite of having multiple different voice actors)
  218. (07:50:01 AM) Northensnow: Well, kind of.
  219. (07:50:45 AM) foboman: AND CUT
  220. (07:50:48 AM) Eiphel: Charles Cecil digs his old templar mythos
  221. (07:51:03 AM) foboman: I love this setting.
  222. (07:51:28 AM) Eiphel: The mythological influences are one of the stronger aspects of the series, I think
  223. (07:51:34 AM) foboman: They tried to replicate in Broken Sword 3, even going all the way out to represent some of the locations, but failed horribly.
  224. (07:51:57 AM) foboman: Man, the final of Broken Sword 3 is horrible.
  225. (07:51:59 AM) Mimness: Thanks for the share George
  226. (07:52:07 AM) Eiphel: Ok, one tiny thing that annoys me horribly about Broken Sword 5 - The view out of Nico's apartment is on the ground floor
  227. (07:52:15 AM) Eiphel: It's meant to be on like the third
  228. (07:53:21 AM) foboman: Man, Lobineau is annoying, but he's way worst in the other games.
  229. (07:53:39 AM) Eiphel: Yeah... And George is written awfully when Lobineau is around too
  230. (07:54:05 AM) Northensnow: Everybody hates George ;_;
  231. (07:54:27 AM) Northensnow: Stop picking on him or I'll call the teacher
  232. (07:55:28 AM) Eiphel: I saw an exhibition of John Dee's instruments at the British Museum a couple of years ago. Didn't check for Templar relics though
  233. (07:55:38 AM) foboman: Shame on you
  234. (07:55:51 AM) foboman: xD
  235. (07:56:41 AM) jfrisby: :D
  236. (07:57:01 AM) jfrisby: I got stuck here forever trying to open that window to trigger something...
  237. (07:57:07 AM) jfrisby: before it was time to.
  238. (07:57:30 AM) Eiphel: Me too
  239. (07:57:48 AM) Eiphel: There's a lot of interactables in this area that you don't actually use until you come back
  240. (07:58:05 AM) jfrisby: right now, it's just george screwing around with the exhibits for no reason :)
  241. (07:58:19 AM) Eiphel: Sounds like George
  242. (07:58:30 AM) jfrisby: typical George
  243. (07:58:51 AM) Mimness: Jerk.
  244. (07:59:16 AM) Eiphel: (Part of my criticism of these games is that a lot of the stuff you need to grab/interact with really doesn't make any sense. They even lampshade this a few times with George commenting that he doesn't know why he's taking it but he's sure there'll be a reason)
  245. (07:59:38 AM) Mimness: He's just a kleptomaniac
  246. (07:59:57 AM) Northensnow: Ireland, the goat is approaching...
  247. (08:00:19 AM) Eiphel: 'He's a professor of history. They're all cuckoo.' - Didn't she just criticise George for making sweeping assumptions about history professors?
  248. (08:00:19 AM) jfrisby: they got a little better about that later in the series, I think -- the backwards puzzle item thing.
  249. (08:00:33 AM) Mimness: I'd rather hit on this old lady.
  250. (08:00:52 AM) Cheeseness: George and his older women
  251. (08:01:33 AM) Mimness: Hello Ireland.
  252. (08:01:41 AM) jfrisby: The use-every-item on every person thing is nice.. Think they confirmed that's in the new game
  253. (08:01:43 AM) Mimness: Hello weird 3D bus
  254. (08:01:56 AM) Eiphel: The joy buzzer was the best
  255. (08:02:13 AM) Eiphel: Seeing every person's reason not to shake George's hand is probably my favourite part
  256. (08:02:33 AM) Cheeseness: George >_<
  257. (08:02:52 AM) Eiphel: I wonder why they wrote him to be such a twonk
  258. (08:02:55 AM) Cheeseness: Who goes to a foreign country and then imitates the local accent in an attempt to be amicable
  259. (08:03:20 AM) foboman: I think he's meant to look like a always-out-of-place steretypical american.
  260. (08:03:31 AM) Northensnow: I've heard several tourists doing so
  261. (08:03:37 AM) foboman: Me too.
  262. (08:04:04 AM) Eiphel: The irony being is that they're being very George-like in portraying this as the stereotypical American tourist
  263. (08:04:21 AM) Eiphel: There was a rogue 'is' in that sentence
  264. (08:05:02 AM) Babloyi [Miranda@8398008.8AB0BF9C.83382450.IP] entered the room.
  265. (08:05:11 AM) Babloyi: ?
  266. (08:05:24 AM) Northensnow: The way that man sneezes is forever burned into my brain
  267. (08:05:54 AM) Babar left the room (quit: Ping timeout: 181 seconds).
  268. (08:05:58 AM) Northensnow: Censorship incoming
  269. (08:06:21 AM) foboman: I don't remember if in the Director's Cut stealing from him is a timed event like the original or automated.
  270. (08:06:31 AM) Eiphel: Timed, if I recall
  271. (08:07:06 AM) foboman: Now it's out of sync again.
  272. (08:07:23 AM) Northensnow: I don't think I ever failed this part, so either I've always done it on time or it wasn't timed
  273. (08:07:23 AM) foboman: 3 seconds.
  274. (08:08:06 AM) Eiphel: What was the censorship, Northernsnow?
  275. (08:08:10 AM) foboman: If I remember correctly, you can click on the object but if you do that too late he takes it back, so you have to wait for it to be taken out again.
  276. (08:08:23 AM) Northensnow: It's about something that will happen soon
  277. (08:08:34 AM) foboman: But maybe in this version once you click on it he won't pick it up again.
  278. (08:08:37 AM) Eiphel: The bit with the cat in the bazaar is definitely still timed
  279. (08:08:38 AM) Northensnow: I don't want to spoil the surprise :3
  280. (08:08:57 AM) Northensnow: The goat isn't, it's completely automated now
  281. (08:09:29 AM) foboman: And that's very sad indeed
  282. (08:09:48 AM) Eiphel: Having only played this version, I don't know why the goat is so infamous
  283. (08:09:58 AM) foboman: I got crazy trying to going over that goat. NOW EVERYBODY MUST SHARE MY PAIN
  284. (08:10:12 AM) Northensnow: They even made a goat-shaped USB key for the Kickstarter if I'm not mistaken
  285. (08:10:16 AM) Eiphel: Yep
  286. (08:10:26 AM) foboman: SHARE THE PAAAAIN
  287. (08:11:15 AM) foboman: It's infamous because it's a strange event for an adventure game.
  288. (08:11:37 AM) foboman: There's this goat and you must go inside a door behind it.
  289. (08:11:53 AM) foboman: If you get too much close to the goat it headbutts you.
  290. (08:12:07 AM) foboman: Every item you try it's useless.
  291. (08:12:12 AM) foboman: So what to do?
  292. (08:12:46 AM) foboman: You must go the nearest possible to it and, while still being in the "safe" zone you must click in another point, near a log.
  293. (08:13:12 AM) Syd: That's such an absurd solution
  294. (08:13:40 AM) Eiphel: That sounds like something I'd have ended up looking up in irritation
  295. (08:13:47 AM) foboman: Then, AND ONLY THEN, George will RUN instead of walking to the point, the goat will jump to headbutt him but he's already out of range, so miss hit. Then tries to headbutt again but get stuck.
  296. (08:13:57 AM) foboman: Then you move the log and trap the goat.
  297. (08:14:46 AM) foboman: It's such an unique solution that made a lot of people cry.
  298. (08:15:26 AM) foboman: What's bad is that even if you KNOW about it, maybe by reading a walkthrough, still getting the exact moment when to click and the exact point where to move is pretty hard and frustrating.
  299. (08:15:46 AM) foboman: And thus the Legend of the Infamous Goat was born.
  300. (08:15:55 AM) Northensnow: foboman, you've been to Ireland. Is this portrayal faithful to the real thing?
  301. (08:16:16 AM) foboman: The beer is faithful. In fact I'm pretty sure it's a Guinnes.
  302. (08:16:43 AM) Cheeseness: Is the goat refactored in this version? I didn't spot Mim getting cranky about it
  303. (08:16:48 AM) foboman: Well, actually the whole pub is pretty faithful.
  304. (08:17:09 AM) Syd: The goat thing is an automatic sequence in this version, I think
  305. (08:17:20 AM) Northensnow: It is. You just walk toward the log and everything solves by itself if I'm not mistaken
  306. (08:17:20 AM) foboman: In this version it headbutts you once and when you go near it again George automatically moves and traps it.
  307. (08:17:34 AM) Cheeseness: Ah, k
  308. (08:18:09 AM) foboman: If I'm correct Revolution itself said that the Goat puzzle probably wasn't a cery good idea.
  309. (08:18:12 AM) foboman: very*
  310. (08:18:20 AM) foboman: Here comes the censorship.
  311. (08:18:43 AM) Northensnow: Hey, they didn't even SHOW him being ran over!
  312. (08:18:55 AM) Northensnow: Or do they?
  313. (08:18:56 AM) foboman: It's a flashback
  314. (08:18:59 AM) Cheeseness: Northensnow: They do
  315. (08:19:02 AM) Northensnow: Ah, here it is
  316. (08:19:36 AM) Northensnow: He was all bloody in the original version, isn't he?
  317. (08:19:43 AM) foboman: Yeah
  318. (08:19:51 AM) Northensnow: wasn't*
  319. (08:19:57 AM) Eiphel: Ah
  320. (08:20:56 AM) Cheeseness: So unconvincing :D
  321. (08:20:59 AM) Mimness: Gah, shouldn't have clicked on the kid, now we're stuck while he waffles on
  322. (08:21:30 AM) foboman: It's funny how he talks like a 40 years old guy.
  323. (08:21:44 AM) foboman: I mean, how his voice sounds like that.
  324. (08:21:56 AM) Northensnow: Compare and contrast: http://youtu.be/H6hgRDfjlws
  325. (08:22:11 AM) Northensnow: if it doesn't work, it's at 5:18
  326. (08:24:04 AM) foboman left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  327. (08:24:16 AM) foboman [5d2a2481@hide-BF4D4B18.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  328. (08:24:22 AM) foboman: whops
  329. (08:24:42 AM) Mimness: Don't try this at home, kids.
  330. (08:24:58 AM) Mimness: I'm just going to restart the stream again, just a min.
  331. (08:25:02 AM) Northensnow: I'm afraid it's too late
  332. (08:25:12 AM) Northensnow: I was talking about the "not trying this at home"
  333. (08:25:29 AM) Mimness: Tut tut, that's very naughty.
  334. (08:25:31 AM) Mimness: We back?
  335. (08:25:39 AM) Northensnow: The audio is for now
  336. (08:25:40 AM) Syd: Yep
  337. (08:25:45 AM) Northensnow: Ok, now it's on
  338. (08:25:49 AM) Mimness: Alrighty
  339. (08:25:52 AM) Cheeseness: :)
  340. (08:26:44 AM) Mimness: Oh no! Khaaaaan!
  341. (08:27:23 AM) foboman: This guy.
  342. (08:27:26 AM) Mimness: Gosh that was tense
  343. (08:27:44 AM) Cheeseness: I am on the edge of my seat
  344. (08:27:47 AM) Northensnow: They could have picked a voice actor that didn't quite sound like Death himself
  345. (08:28:36 AM) foboman: What's fun is that in the end he's even not such a ba... ok, too furter in the story, won't spoil.
  346. (08:29:05 AM) Mimness: George doesn't know why he now has a sopping towel
  347. (08:29:18 AM) Mimness: But I do, because I can see the future
  348. (08:29:26 AM) Syd: It seemed like the right thing to do at the time. :P
  349. (08:29:35 AM) Eiphel: Yeah, see, the towel is the sort of thing I was talking about
  350. (08:30:08 AM) foboman: And here comes one of the particularity of this version.
  351. (08:30:16 AM) Northensnow: SHAKE HIS HAND, FOR GOD'S SAKE
  352. (08:30:19 AM) foboman: But we still have to wait just a little.
  353. (08:30:32 AM) Eiphel: Always shake everyone's hand
  354. (08:30:45 AM) Eiphel: Hee
  355. (08:30:48 AM) Cheeseness: lol
  356. (08:31:16 AM) Eiphel: This guy gives hardly a damn about his nephew
  357. (08:31:36 AM) foboman: Man of the north europe. Harsh, but good.
  358. (08:32:04 AM) Northensnow: The first time I see a tsundere old man
  359. (08:32:13 AM) Eiphel: I'm from northern Europe. I still wouldn't want to be his nephew!
  360. (08:32:25 AM) Eiphel: (Well, niece)
  361. (08:32:49 AM) foboman: THEY CUT IT
  362. (08:33:05 AM) Eiphel: I got stuck here for AGES because I didn't notice that crack
  363. (08:33:06 AM) foboman: In the original, EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU GO UP you have to see the whole animation.
  364. (08:33:16 AM) Mimness: Blergh.
  365. (08:33:25 AM) Northensnow: THE GOAT
  366. (08:33:32 AM) Syd: Well hello there goat
  367. (08:33:33 AM) Northensnow: THE GOAT AND THE MAIDEN FAIR
  368. (08:33:37 AM) foboman: OH GOD MY OLD TRAUMA
  369. (08:33:39 AM) Cheeseness: Nice
  370. (08:34:10 AM) Cheeseness: It's not even a log >_<
  371. (08:34:12 AM) Babloyi left the room (quit: Ping timeout: 185 seconds).
  372. (08:34:19 AM) Cheeseness: No wonder I was confused by what you guys were saying
  373. (08:34:24 AM) foboman: Ok ok, I remembered wrong.
  374. (08:34:35 AM) Mimness: First playthrough I clicked the 'log' first. Didn't even know the goat was a problem
  375. (08:34:40 AM) Northensnow: I knew it wasn't a log, but I'm not quite sure how to call it
  376. (08:34:58 AM) foboman: Crank of wood?
  377. (08:35:28 AM) Mimness: Cocaine. Oh, I mean... plaster of paris.
  378. (08:35:45 AM) Eiphel: He sure gets a lot of use out of that plaster
  379. (08:35:46 AM) Northensnow: He did use it in kindergarten.
  380. (08:35:59 AM) Mimness: He's a professional
  381. (08:36:57 AM) Mimness: Very quick-drying plaster too...
  382. (08:37:35 AM) Northensnow: The silence of a sliding slab
  383. (08:37:41 AM) Eiphel: I was thinking that
  384. (08:38:08 AM) Northensnow: That's the sound of silence Simon and Garfunkeln were talking about
  385. (08:38:31 AM) Northensnow: Garfunkel*
  386. (08:38:36 AM) Syd: "...and then, silence." *loud noise of moving stone*
  387. (08:39:53 AM) Mimness: The sloooow walking
  388. (08:40:01 AM) Eiphel: Yeeeeah
  389. (08:40:18 AM) foboman: Another thing they removed in this version is the transistory movement between sprites positions.
  390. (08:40:19 AM) Eiphel: Very sluggish controls in general
  391. (08:40:39 AM) Babar [Miranda@C6E9723F.285DADCA.83382450.IP] entered the room.
  392. (08:40:45 AM) Cheeseness: Would you lose some atmosphere in places if you could just double click to change to the next room?
  393. (08:41:07 AM) foboman: Specifically, here when you pass from watching left to watching towards the player it's a classical immediate movement.
  394. (08:41:12 AM) Eiphel: I would favour that, but just making things move a bit quicker would be fine
  395. (08:41:16 AM) Northensnow: Depends on how much I'm frustrated
  396. (08:41:49 AM) foboman: In the original it would have been a full, smooth movement. Only Broken Sword did that and I loved it.
  397. (08:41:54 AM) Northensnow: in The Longest Journey you can speed up every animation in the game by holding Shift
  398. (08:42:13 AM) Eiphel: Oh really? I was about to say a button to speed things up would be a good idea
  399. (08:42:44 AM) Eiphel: I have the Longest Journey. I have a stack of adventure games to play.
  400. (08:43:42 AM) Northensnow: It's a great game. It took me some time to warm up to it, but I loved it.
  401. (08:44:20 AM) Northensnow: I even backed the kickstarter for the third game in the series
  402. (08:44:34 AM) Cheeseness: It'd be nice if you could double click to return to previously visited rooms
  403. (08:44:45 AM) Eiphel: I thought you could?
  404. (08:45:12 AM) Eiphel: Wait, no, if you click on the area transition to another screen it's immediate isn't it?
  405. (08:45:19 AM) Mimness: Yep.
  406. (08:47:22 AM) Northensnow: French people writing to their French loved ones... in English.
  407. (08:47:24 AM) Cheeseness: Oh, OK
  408. (08:47:27 AM) Cheeseness: It's not that bad then
  409. (08:48:02 AM) foboman: I just remembered something else. In the original every time George visits Nico she always smiles.
  410. (08:48:21 AM) foboman: Really, she welcomes him with a birght full smile.
  411. (08:48:34 AM) foboman: Here she doesn't.
  412. (08:48:55 AM) Northensnow: Now I remember that
  413. (08:49:08 AM) jfrisby: Ooh.. You're having a bbq with Ron, Cheese! Exciting :D
  414. (08:49:34 AM) Cheeseness: jfrisby: :D
  415. (08:49:41 AM) Eiphel: I always felt like them becoming a couple was just kind of plonked on there without any chemistry or anything. Like, hey, we have a male and a female lead. Better make them a couple at the end"
  416. (08:51:21 AM) Northensnow: To be honest, they only kiss after they just survived an explosion, and at the beginning of BS2 they're back to being friends.
  417. (08:51:23 AM) foboman: Probably that's why they broke up after 2 and 3. Yeah. They reconcile in 3 only to broke up again and introduce a stupid rival heroine in 4.
  418. (08:51:52 AM) foboman: Man, Broken Sword 4 is really full of holes.
  419. (08:51:57 AM) Northensnow: I mean, it's not like they are trying to show them as a fated couple after all
  420. (08:52:11 AM) Eiphel: If you read the backstory in two then they've been dating for a while
  421. (08:52:39 AM) Eiphel: And George makes very determined references to her as his girlfriend (mostly around Lobineau)
  422. (08:53:22 AM) foboman: As they're now, after 4 games and stories, they're more the classic kind of "we're lovers but the time we say that everything will collapse so let's just pretend we're not."
  423. (08:53:43 AM) Northensnow: Sure, but they're not madly in love with each other for no reason, they just date for a while and then stay as friends
  424. (08:56:12 AM) foboman: I wonder how their relationship will be shown in Broken Sword 5 now that the stupid useless girl from Broken Sword 4 is out of the picture.
  425. (09:01:50 AM) Eiphel: I got stuck here for a while
  426. (09:02:25 AM) Mimness: Mmm, so did I first time through
  427. (09:02:39 AM) Babar left the room (quit: Ping timeout: 181 seconds).
  428. (09:02:45 AM) Eiphel: Reet, I need to be off. Ta ra.
  429. (09:02:59 AM) Eiphel left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  430. (09:03:14 AM) Mimness: Nearly done for the day - this part's been much slower than I'd hoped
  431. (09:04:09 AM) Northensnow: Is there only one more session?
  432. (09:04:15 AM) Cheeseness: Northensnow: Yeah
  433. (09:04:36 AM) Cheeseness: Mim and I are heading to PAX Australia, so we want to finish up with Broken Sword before then
  434. (09:04:43 AM) foboman: And the next game will be? Broken Sword 2?
  435. (09:05:13 AM) Cheeseness: foboman: Still working that out. Unlikely that it'll be another Broken Sword title - we like to mix things up and not get too bogged down in a single series
  436. (09:05:24 AM) foboman: Ok
  437. (09:05:46 AM) Cheeseness: We'll come back to it eventually, but it's good to give people who aren't interested in it a break
  438. (09:05:54 AM) Syd: That definitely doesn't rule out Broken Sword 2 in the future, but we generally don't do 2 games of the same series back-to-back
  439. (09:05:59 AM) jfrisby: Are you playing this on the Occulus? :D
  440. (09:06:08 AM) jfrisby: immersive 2D :D
  441. (09:06:44 AM) Cheeseness: lol
  442. (09:07:13 AM) jfrisby: very nice unboxing video... we're all going to look really silly all the time in the future :D
  443. (09:07:19 AM) Cheeseness: Cheers :D
  444. (09:07:41 AM) Cheeseness: Hoping to have some of my own work to show off at some stage
  445. (09:07:59 AM) foboman: Assassins VS Templars. They thought it was awesome when Assasin's Creed came out. IT WASN'T ANYTHING NEW
  446. (09:08:39 AM) jfrisby: I started learning some AGS stuff the other day... so only 6-8 years until I have something to show people :D
  447. (09:08:44 AM) Cheeseness: :D
  448. (09:09:50 AM) Cheeseness: lol
  449. (09:09:51 AM) Cheeseness: Jazz hands
  450. (09:11:55 AM) Mimness: Aaand we're done for today
  451. (09:12:01 AM) Cheeseness: Woo!
  452. (09:12:06 AM) Cheeseness: Thanks everybody for coming :)
  453. (09:12:32 AM) Mimness: Yes, thanks!
  454. (09:12:35 AM) foboman: We'll meet again for the last part.
  455. (09:12:35 AM) Syd: Thanks for streaming again, Mimness. :)
  456. (09:12:36 AM) Northensnow: Another nice nitpicking session
  457. (09:12:41 AM) Cheeseness: :D
  458. (09:13:03 AM) Mimness: My pleasure. I hope we can get through the rest next session! There's still quite a bit to go.
