  1. Dear IACR members
  2.
  3. Here is a brief update on IACR matters as of CRYPTO 2014.
  4.
  5.
  6. ***Communications and website
  7.
  8. First of all, I would like to thank Christopher Wolf for his service
  9. and dedication to the IACR in his role as Newsletter Editor (later,
  10. Communications Secretary). From 2009 until this summer, he has led
  11. the communications and publicity activities of the IACR and made the
  12. website an interesting and interactive experience.
  13.
  14. The Board of Directors has appointed Mike Rosulek (Oregon State
  15. University, US) as the Communications Secretary; Yu Yu (Shanghai Jiao
  16. Tong University, CN) also joins the communications team and serves as
  17. one of the webmasters.
  18.
  19.
  20.
  21. ***Cryptography Research Fund for Students
  22.
  23. Thanks to the generous donation of 1 Mio. USD from Cryptography
  24. Research Inc. (a division of Rambus) the IACR has created the
  25. *Cryptography Research Fund for Students.*
  26.
  27. The fund aims at promoting cryptology to students and supporting
  28. scholarly work in the field. With its help, the IACR can greatly
  29. increase its support for students in cryptology through:
  30.
  31. 1) Waiving the registration fee for student speakers at EUROCRYPT,
  32. CRYPTO, ASIACRYPT and, now, also at CHES, FSE, TCC and PKC;
  33.
  34. 2) Expanding its support for Cryptology Schools (see below);
  35.
  36. 3) Further activities, as coordinated by an Endowment Committee that
  37. oversees the fund. (Please contact its chair, Greg Rose, with more
  38. ideas.)
  39.
  40. The IACR has created an investment fund with a conservative strategy
  41. so that this program can be funded in perpetuity. Combined with a
  42. smaller commitment from the IACR, the sum in the fund can support the
  43. ongoing activities detailed above as well as let the capital keep
  44. up with inflation.
  45.
  46.
  47.
  48. ***Parallel sessions
  49.
  50. In response to the growth of the field over the last years, the Board
  51. in 2011 sent a message to Program Chairs and Program Committees of the
  52. three main conferences asking them "to accept substantially more
  53. papers than used to be the case and to work with their General Chair
  54. for the logistics to make this possible." As one can see from the
  55. publication statistics over the recent years
  56. (http://www.iacr.org/publications/statistics.html) the message has
  57. been received partially, but not uniformly implemented. As of today,
  58. the Board believes that this effort should go further. During the
  59. recent meeting at CRYPTO, a majority of the Board expressed the opinion
  60. that a program of, say, 60 or more talks should be arranged at least
  61. partially in parallel sessions.
  62.
  63. Hence, during its meeting at CRYPTO, the Board has decided to ask the
  64. Program Chairs and Committees of the three IACR conferences in 2015
  65. "to have parallel sessions for a significant part of the program." It
  66. is intended for 2015 only. At a discussion during the membership
  67. meeting, a vote indicated a clear majority in favor of this change for
  68. 2015, but there was also a significant minority against. After
  69. ASIACRYPT 2015 a referendum among the IACR membership will be held for
  70. deciding whether the format should be kept like this.
  71.
  72. Per IACR's policy, Program Chairs and Committees are responsible for
  73. the scientific program; the General Chairs are responsible for the
  74. logistics and the organization. The Board guides these processes and
  75. ensures continuity across IACR's activities.
  76.
  77.
  78.
  79. ***Cryptology Schools
  80.
  81. The Board has approved funding for the first three IACR Cryptology
  82. Schools, which take place later this year and next year.
  83.
  84. 1) School on Cryptographic Attacks (http://attackschool.di.uminho.pt/)
  85. 13-17 October 2014, Porto, Portugal
  86.
  87. 2) School on Design and Security of Cryptographic Algorithms and Devices,
  88. 5-10 July 2015 (tentative), location to be decided.
  89.
  90. 3) Asian Workshop on Symmetric Key Cryptography - Cryptology School,
  91. 19-22 December 2014, Chennai, India (http://ask2014.iiitd.ac.in/)
  92.
  93. See the website http://www.iacr.org/schools/ for more information.
  94.
  95.
  96.
  97. ***Elections
  98.
  99. There will be elections for three IACR Director positions later this
  100. year; nominations are now open and due by October 10, 2014. Please
  101. consider running and see the announcement on the website:
  102. http://www.iacr.org/elections/2014/
  103.
  104.
  105.
  106. Regards,
  107.
  108. Christian Cachin
  109. IACR President
