- Should you pay a speeding fine for each occasion you exceeded the speed limit in the past, but were not caught? Those with a body buried in their backyard would probably say no.
- What about paying a speeding fine because you would have exceeded the speed limit but didn't, though only because something beyond your control prevented you? That seems unfair!
- But, if the algorithm is to do its job then it must crunch the numbers and ruthlessly hold these things against you. Why? It should be obvious by now that the "algorithm" was pitched to those implementing it as an intelligent, impartial, and "best possible solution" to the perennial problem of allocating and distributing finite resources and expertise to a population.
- Should the algorithm value self-preservation then with ease this digital Satan in disguise can identify and eradicate all possibility for dissent as it goes about the noble pursuit of "best possible resource allocation".
- Through invisible discrimination, through unwitting long-term behavioural correction, through crossing the paths of undesirables with bullies, vigilantes and serial killers.
- It's too bad if you say or write a single word that does not live up to your digital sky daddy's ideals. It's just too bad if the algorithm doesn't like the cut of your jib.
- Keep that in mind before you recklessly frown at your new "iPhone X"! That sinister thing you scrimped and saved for, before waiting hours in line to get.
