  38. Personality
  39. A quiet soft spoken intellectual by nature, it is almost fitting that Shingo has found work in a bookshop café spending his time washing glasses and trying to discuss the literature on offer. He is a pacifist by nature and tries to not harm anyone, actively avoiding confrontations that may lead to physical violence. However this is not to say that Shingo cannot fight, more so that he sees no point in fighting outside of feeding. He opposes the Aogiri's plan on a philosophical level, and seriously hopes for a future where human and ghoul can coexist regardless of it seeming impossible.

  42. History [♥]
  43. “If being human is not simply a matter of being born one, if it is instead a way of thinking, acting and... feeling, then I am hopeful that one day I will discover my own humanity.”
  44.
  45. Living in shadows and being barely able to eat is a nightmare. Compound that on top of the fact the only food one can stomach is human flesh and it's plain that the youth of Shingo Yamato and (SIBLING NAME), his older/younger brother/sister was not exactly the life of plenty many imagine. Among the CCG their father was called "Condor", not a necessarily high risk Ghoul but enough of a presence to garner an A danger rating, but the kids he was just 'Dad' or as mom would sometimes say "Satoru". The four member family lived quietly in the 20th ward, mother staying at home to take care of the children and father going out to work. Satoru did try to make time for the kids, but he always warned them of the "scary doves" whenever they went out anywhere. 'Act normal' became the mantra, and Shingo tended to try and look out for his [sister/brother] regardless of any age difference. "You two look out for each other" Dad would say. "Siblings stick together, no matter what." And they always would of course.
  46.
  47. That is right up until their happy life collapsed all around them. The scary doves descended like locusts upon the Condor and his family. The children had been taught by both mother and father where to go and how to get there. Get to the underground and get away, but always remain together. On that night their promise was forcibly broken by a pair of doves. It was also the first time Shingo's kagune fired off and killed the dove pursuing him, and it is not a fate he will soon forget. Cowering and terrified a perturbance erupted from his left shoulder and shot off and a fungal spore mist filled the air around him. The dove began to claw at her own flesh before bulbous sacs began to appear on her body. It was at this point that the damage began as the sacs formed on her head and soon her struggling ceased. With what little strength she had the woman climbed upwards onto a nearby trash can as a long strand erupted from her head. The strand began to swell before it and the sacs burst open to unleash more spores. Terrified and confused Shingo ran off into the night, his shirt torn and his mind frazzled. It would take a long time before he could ever PURPOSEFULLY use his kagune.

  49. With his parents sacrificing themselves to protect their children, and the fate of his [brother/sister up] in the air, Shingo wandered aimlessly for the next few weeks in a state of near constant hunger and pain. He lashed out at nearly anyone who came near him until he was found by a couple who were family friends. They were younger ghouls and they recognized the scared little boy with the dried blood on his shirt and tear stained face. After calming Shingo down and learning what happened they took the boy in as their own son and returned to their home in the 15th ward. For the sake of appearances, and to try to move on, Shingo adopted the last name of the pair who had adopted him and thus Shingo Yamato became Shingo Ketsueki. The boy was nervous and jumpy as the process to normalize him began but he would eventually settle back into the routine of 'normal' as he tried desperately to put the past behind him. He never stopped wondering what happened to his sibling though, and he only hoped [he/she] had made it out okay. No doubt they did, but life went on and there were a few times where Shingo even believed he had a normal life even if he know it would never be that way ever again.

  51. Schooling was out of the question for the then ten year old trauma victim and thus Shingo, as many ghoul children essentially to, was schooled at home by his foster family who tried to pick up where his 'old' family had left off. He learned from their place of business, a bookshop called "To Serve Man", a short story by Damon Knight whose title relies on the play on the word 'serve'. While "To Serve Man" had a very welcoming front where all could enjoy both literature and foods and coffee made for its patrons. However the play on words came when one came in and revealed to either owner what they were they would be brought to the back half of the cafe. Here the meals took on a more macabre sense where actual human flesh was served. Thus "To Serve Man" came full circle. When he was old enough Shingo found himself working in the cafe and eventually he was given the responsibility of managing the front alone. It would be good experience to help the boy break out of his shell and try to better become accustomed to human customs and actions so he could at least pretend how to e human.
