  1. I will apologise now, I'm not the best at getting my points across in a clear manner, I feel I am using your comment section as a place to vent and also, though this may limit my privilege to respond, I haven't quite finished reading your own post at the time of writing. If I have made mistakes with something or am missing points entirely please reply, I aim to be persuaded by information presented however at the moment the information has leaned me more towards GamerGate. http://gamergate.me/2014/10/what-is-gamergate/ appears to have quite of a few related sources.
  2.
  3. The misogynist tag that has been painted on to the movement from what I've seen is for the most past false. It's something that the gaming media, the ones with the voices, have painted on to gamers along with trying to tell everyone that the 'gamer' identity is dead.
  4.
  5. Something to note is I haven't seen any coverage of the 4chan.org/v/ funding of The Fine Young Capitalists (TFYC), a group of people working towards a larger number of women in the gaming industry, prior to GamerGate. This is what brought about the creation of Vivian James.

  7.
  8. At one point back when GamerGate was first starting TFYC were involved in an interview where they explained the problems they faced in some of their projects, it might be worth a read if it hasn't been seen yet.

  11. I am not denying there has been harassment directed at prominent figures such as Zoe Quinn, Anita Sarkeesian and Brianna Wu but the picture they paint is that it all goes one way and that it all comes from GamerGate itself which it does not. from the other side, Totalbiscuit, Boogie2988 and KingofPol to name a few that been harassed for being neutral or support GamerGate... https://twitter.com/Boogie2988/status/522156760623484928 , https://twitter.com/Kingofpol/status/525755692318457856 ,

  14. before I continue. When I refer to GamerGate I believe that the movement in it's entirety is after:
  15.
  16. 1. Ethics and objectivity from gaming journalists when they are writing a review.
  17. 2. Artistic Freedom for games developers to produce whatever they want.
  18. 3. Equality in the Gaming industry.
  19. 4. Freedom of speech. No Censorship.
  20.
  21. Admittedly I cannot speak for the whole and I may have missed a few points but I believe any threat directed towards a member of the opposition does not come from a true GamerGate supporter.
  22.
  23. Ethics is an important issue, one that had specifically disclosure raised when the blog post insinuating Zoe Quinn had been sleeping with journalists for positive reviews first surfaced. Though this may have been proven false now it doesn't change the fact that some people believe disclosure hasn't been forthcoming and a simple assurance that it shall be in future with things such as changes to the guidelines such as what the escapist did.

  26.
  27. Some, including myself, believe that if all of the involved websites has released something similar to this GamerGate would have stopped or at least many of it's supporters would have gone back to what they wanted to do all along and enjoy playing games.
  28.
  29. Artistic freedom is something that I have seen infringed on a few times of late, I don't however have any examples at hand right now, that does mean it could be a conspiracy yes.
  30.
  31. Equality in the gaming industry is something that was tacked on later, to attempt to deal with the people labelling everyone who supported GamerGate as misogynists or racists. Originally it was believed that it should be a given that equality was a goal everyone should strive for but when things like #notyourshield were brought in to existence, because members of the opposition were adamant that GamerGate supporters MUST be white males, it was added.
  32.
  33. Additionally freedom of speech wasn't included until later. This was added because multiple websites, ranging from the journalist websites themselves (gawker media owned as well as some others), reddit and even 4chan began censoring all discussion regarding GamerGate. To be fair there was a lot of vitriol, cursing and other nasty comments in some of these threads.. It doesn't however warrant the collateral damage, silencing of voices that were attempting fair and concise discussion.
  34.
  35. In closing, a lot of the conversation I've seen between the two sides of GamerGate , in the two months I've been lurking, has been Ad Hominem attacks though mainly this has come from the anti-GamerGate side e.g. the supposition that GamerGate supporters are white male neckbeard misogynists that live in their mother's basements. C.H sommers, a prominent feminist, has been called conservative for agreeing with the base concerns of GamerGate, unsure how someone meant that to be a personal attacking though. If only people could converse on the subject at hand rather than personal attacks....
  36.
  37. Generalising of a group is not a good move though I have done so here. Both sides have been generalised often and I cant really help that.. :/
  38.
  39. Thank you for reading my post, it is quite long, longer than I expected and is still lacking many points.... That is probably the saddest thing about all of this.
