Lapis, The Barista

Steven runs to the Big Donut as usual, it's a special today, two Ultra-Donuts for $4, it's a steal. Rounding the corner, Lars sits on the sidewalk, grumpy as usual.
"Hey Lars, whats up!" The cheery voice rings out.
"Well, lookie here, it's Mr. Universe himself, what trying to get me fired from the sidewalk?!" Lars looks as though he might pop a blood vessel, before going back to moping.
"What happened?" Steven questions, concerned for his (loosest definition of) friend.
"Her!" He points behind them, to the dour looking azure woman, "She came in, and said that you said she could be a barista here, we barely serve coffee!"
"Lapis?" Steven wonders, leaving the melodramatic Lars by himself. Again.

"Hello, welcome to the Big Donut how can we help you?" Lapis says, her eyes shut in apparent boredom. Sadie hurries from the back, her stubby legs carrying her quickly.
"Steven! Here for the Ultra-Donuts?" Sadies says. At the mention of his name, Lapis's eyes shoot open, and a warm smile graces the usually cold expression.
"Hey, Steven, the gems let you go for once?" Lapis says, leaning over the counter. Steven stands in the store, his mind attempting to justify that Lapis, his friend (and gem who nearly drowned him), is working at the Big Donut. As a barista.

"Uh, yeah, can I get the Ultra-Donuts please?" Steven says, voice unsure if this is real life or he fell asleep in his mother's room again. Sadie nods and quickly runs back to make the massive donuts. Steven continues to look at Lapis, dumbfounded.

"Uh, Steven, you OK?" Lapis sounds concerned.
"Yeah, just I'm wondering, how did you get a job here?"
"I applied, Peridot was getting annoying in the barn."
"But how? You have no work experience, no . . ."
"I just said I know you, and the girl," Lapis points back, "said I'm hired."
"Then what about Lars?"
"She then fired him." Lapis says matter-of-factly.
"Why?"
"She said something about video games and an island, I don't really know farther than that." Lapis shrugs, Steven knew that she could care less about poor Lars.

Sadie comes back out holding the massive foot long donuts in a box.
"Here you go Steven, that'll be $4." Sadie says, smiling at her new co-worker. Lapis manages to put on a smile, a half-hearted one, but a smile.
"Well, bye guys, have a nice day," Steven says, waving at the two of them as he leaves.
"Bye Steven!" They say in unison. Steven walks back to the temple, more confused than anything.
