  10. Marco finished watching the rest of the Kingsmen in his dark living room in complete silence. Surely, Jackie was just kidding when she said she wanted to re-enact the ending of the movie with him...right? Regardless, Marco didn't know whether to be relieved or angry that he missed out on that, just that he was glad his parent's didn't come home during that particular scene. Marco kept texting Jackie but he wasn't getting any responses, Jackie had dialed him but it must have been a butt dial because all he heard was the sound of fists hitting a wall and someone who sounded like Jackie's mother shouting "knock that off". If Jackie was in a mood then there'd be no reaching her tonight, Marco turned off the TV and shuffled up to his bedroom, he noticed Star's bedrooms lights were on. Marco knew he should just call it a night, but he also couldn't stop thinking about Jackie's accusations of Star, they were ridiculous but what if there was some truth to it? One way or another, Marco had to find out. He approached her door and knocked.
  11.
  12. "Who is it?"
  13.
  14. "It's me, Marco, can I come in?"
  15.
  16. "Yea sure just give me a minute."
  17.
  18. Marco could hear the sound of what he figured was a laser puppy but then silence. A few more minutes passed and Marco could then hear the ruffling of clothes and Star's closet door opening and shutting. When Star finally opened the door, Marco had to look away almost instantly. Star was wearing a blue nightgown, but it was practically see through he could make out her bra and boy shorts she was wearing. At this point, he got the feeling he didn't have to ask anymore but morbid curiosity got the better of him.
  19.
  20. "Uh, I wanted to talk, but if this is a bad time…" Marco said, staring at his shoes.
  21.
  22. "No, not at all! I honestly didn't think you'd want to talk to me right now after what happened," Star replied happily.
  23.
  24. "Tonight was my fault, you two clearly aren't getting along and I still tried to get you together, so I can't be too mad at either one of you, just mostly with myself," Marco replied still looking at his shoes.
  25.
  26. "Aww, Marco I'm not mad at you if that helps things," Star replied as she crouched so she could look Marco in the eyes. Marco's gaze immediately turned towards the ceiling as she had unintentionally given Marco a full view of her cleavage, at least Marco hoped it was unintentional. Star looked up at the ceiling and then down to the floor and then back at Marco and giggled hysterically she knew what Marco was doing and thought it was so cute…Marco Diaz, always the gentlemen.
  27.
  28. "Can you uh...uh...turn off the lights?" Marco asked. At this point, he'd do anything to distort his view of Star as the odds of a snowstorm suddenly appearing forcing her to cover up in a parka was unlikely.
  29.
  30. "Sure thing Marco," Star shouted as she hit the light switch on her wall. Everything went pitch black except for Star, her bra and underwear were of the glow in the dark variety. Marco pinched the top of his nose in frustration.
  31.
  32. "On second thought turn them on...please?"
  33.
  34. "Nah, I like it better this way," responded Star as she skipped over to Marco was still looking at the ceiling. Marco took off his hoodie and tossed it to Star.
  35.
  36. "Wear that."
  37.
  38. "Why?"
  39.
  40. "Just don't argue with me here I need to be able to look at you for this," Marco groaned.
  41.
  42. Star smiled and put on his hoodie but didn't zip it up, Marco quickly glanced thinking it was all clear and groaned again when he realized it wasn't. Without looking, he reached for the zipper himself but couldn't get it to zip up all the way.
  43.
  44. "Uh, Marco, you snagged the zipper on my bra that's what you are tugging at," Star said in a whisper.
  45.
  46. Marco immediately stumbled back, shaking his hands like he touched something he shouldn't have had. "Oh god, oh god, no! I'm so sorry" he managed to say. He started making his way to the door, but Star grabbed him by the hand.
  47.
  48. "Don't be silly it kinda tickled, anyways tell me what you want to talk about?"
  49.
  50. Marco sighed, whatever he figured not like this wasn't going to be awkward conversation already he might as well go for broke. Star went over and sat down on her bed and motioned Marco to sit next to her, but he decided to stand, at least now he could sorta look at her without feeling embarrassed.
  51.
  52. "Star you know that I…no…that’s not good, I understand that," Marco tried to ask the question but couldn't find the way to do it. Star knew, however, she's known Marco long enough that she could tell these things he couldn't say almost right away.
  53.
  54. "Yes," Star answered.
  55.
  56. "What?" Marco asked still trying to figure out what to say.
  57.
  58. "You want to ask me if what Jackie said is true don't you?" Star replied.
  59.
  60. Marco looked Star right in the eye; he won't lie to her now he hopes she will do the same.
  61.
  62. "Yes, that’s what I came to ask, be honest with me Star…is one of the reasons you dislike Jackie because you feel angry that I'm with her, and not with you?" Marco asked the question and felt a lump in his throat forming, he never thought he'd have to ask this.
  63.
  64. "I already told you, yes," Was Star's reply. Marco just knew she was telling the truth, no reason to doubt her.
  65.
  66. Marco ran his hand through his hair in thought. "But why? It doesn't make any sense, you’re the main reason we are together in the first place."
  67.
  68. "I starred up again and I starred up bad," Star said in a quiet tone while looking up at Marco. "I didn't see it then, just how much I need you, how much I want you."
  69.
  70. Marco was starting to feel dizzy so he sat down next to her anyways before he fainted.
  71.
  72. "I've known you for almost a year Marco, we do everything together, we share everything together! There is not one person here or on Mewni that I would trust more with my life my life than you," Star spoke softly, as if trying to maintain her composure.
  73.
  74. "I was stupid and didn't understand what I was feeling, or worse, I suppressed those feelings. In many ways the bond you and me have goes beyond what any couple, married or not have, even the blood moon deemed us worthy of being together." Star tried to laugh at that. "That's how stupid I was, an ancient love demi-god or whatever bestowed a gift on us that any two people in love would kill to have and I just ignored it." Star turned to look at Marco, he was looking right at her, his eyes were a mix of pain and confusion. Star placed her hands on his cheeks and tried to pull Marco in for a kiss, but he pushed her hands away.
  75.
  76. "You got mad at me that night," Marco whispered. "I tried to look out for you like I always do and you got mad at me for it." Marco looked away from Star, "I let it go thinking it really was my fault, but it wasn't going to be the last time you got mad at me for trying to watch out for you...you don't need me."
  77.
  78. "Yes! Yes, I do Marco!" Star began to say, tears beginning to fall.
  79.
  80. "No, you don't! Most of the time I'm the one who needs saving, I give 110% every time there's trouble and still you don’t actually need me, and for that matter you don't really want me either!" Marco said his tone sounding upset.
  81.
  82. "That's not true, Marco, I was blind to things before but not anymore you are just confused like I was," Star said almost shouting.
  83.
  84. "Yeah, I take it back you do you do want me...as your faithful servant," Marco said standing up.
  85.
  86. "No, NO! Marco you’re not that to me, you’re my best friend...my knight." Star was letting the tears flow; she was not expecting this response from him.
  87.
  88. "So, all those times were you just expected me to do what you want, when you want no questions asked, that was just you being a friend?" Marco looked just sad now. "Last time I checked being a friend was about giving and taking, but you...you just take and take and take and I always give every time!"
  89.
  90. "Marco...I…"
  91.
  92. "Jackie actually cares for my opinion on things, we take turns doing what each other wants, we compromise, give and take...sure you do it sometimes but for the most part your still a princess who expects to get her way every time!" Marco started to pace around in circles trying to control his emotions. "And not only that she actually needs me, if a monster attacks us she actually wants me to protect her, to be her hero. Do you know how good it feels to actually be needed, to feel useful? "
  93.
  94. Star wiped away tears and said nothing.
  95.
  96. "So, no, you don't need me, at least not how she does, and you only want me because she has me. You’re like a kid with an old toy, you don’t even know it’s there until some other kid starts to play with it, and then, like magic, it’s the most important thing in the world!"
  97.
  98.
  99. "THATS NOT TRUE! I KNOW I'M NOT PERFECT AND I'M SORRY IF I MADE YOU FEEL BAD ABOUT YOURSELF OR AS IF I DON'T CARE, HONEST MARCO CROSS MY HEARTS!" Star said pointing at her cheek hearts while both shouting and sobbing.
  100.
  101. Star jumped up and grabbed onto Marco in a bear hug.
  102.
  103. "I can change, I can be the girl you want me to be and I'll do it all for you, just tell me what you want. I'll do anything to prove to you that you mean more to me than life itself Marco!" Star cried as she hugged him.
  104.
  105. Marco slowly returned to being himself, as angry and confused as he was holding her made it clear how hurt she was he promised himself he wouldn't hurt her. However, his mind was still made up and emotional pain is inevitable.
  106.
  107. "Star, listen. I got a bit worked up, I know you're not as bad as I’m making you out to be right now, but the fact is Jackie is my future and you need to accept it," Marco said holding onto her. "And you will because you're still MY best friend just as much as I am yours."
  108.
  109. Star began to tremble as he held her. "No, no, I don't want to accept it."
  110.
  111. "I-I...I still love you...just in a different way," Marco whispered and let go of her.
  112.
  113. Marco held back a tear and began to exit her bedroom, not wanting to look back as he didn't want to feel sad seeing Star cry again, as it might break him. He had to believe that she will get over this eventually as he still hoped that everything could go back to the way it was, just with the added bonus of being with Jackie.
  114.
  115. "B-b-but you're my knight and I'm you're princess," Star said between sobs.
  116.
  117. Marco stopped as he opened the door.
  118.
  119. "And you have my word that I will fight as many dragons as I have to if it means rescuing you from whatever castle you are imprisoned in, except unlike video games, or even the Kingsmen, sometimes...sometimes the knight doesn't always marry the princess afterwards."
  120.
  121. Marco exited the room and slowly closed the door. "Goodnight Star," he whispered as the door closed with a thud.
  122.
  123. Star climbed into her bed, she was still wearing Marco's hoodie. She zipped it up the rest of the way and raised the hood part so it covered her head. She wrapped her arms around herself and just cried.
