[18:42:21] <%Somber> The five friends had been captured by the Shady Hollow defense team and taken to quarentine. It was an absolutely lovely prison, but it was still a prison none the less. The two doctors that had been in, one friendly and apologetic to Skyshine, and the other quite happy to headshrink all of em till there wasn't anything left. Neither boded particularly
[18:43:48] <%Somber> well for the two friends. When alone, however, they were contacted again by Incognito, who warned them all this was not an illusion, no matter what they saw. That this place could and would erase their memories without blinking. And he suggested the five of them play along for the time being. Appeal the order for a mind wipe, and try to find out what was
[18:44:13] <%Somber> behind all this and how to stop it for good."
[18:49:23] Star_Chaser sighed quietly and frowned, looking around at the walls as she sat on the not-grass.
[18:50:06] <%Somber> Oh it very much was grass. Green and sweet and ready to eat.
[18:50:22] <%Somber> The kind of grass you couldn't really find in the wasteland anymore.
[18:51:19] Tiller sprawls on the grass-grass and cries silently.
[18:51:32] Red_Line rolls around in the grass "Well at least it's soft."
[18:52:44] Star_Chaser furrows her brow. "So how do we oppose them trying to wipe our brains? We can't exactly fight our way out. Whatever's running this place made that plenty clear."
[18:53:00] <%Somber> It was almost a half hour later when the trees pulled aside and the bored stallion returned. "Okay. I have some forms for you to sign, and then we can start with complete memory annullment. So if you could just sign here and initital here, here, and here, we can get going erasing your damaged psychies and returning you to your families."
[18:54:01] Tiller "I want to appeal."
[18:55:17] <%Somber> His face fell as he looked like Hearthswarming Day had been cancelled. "Oh no... no no no... don't say that! None of this is real, remember? Come on! Just sign the paper and our lives and your lives will be better for it!"
[18:55:48] Star_Chaser frowns. "I'd also like to appeal. Erasing someone's mind is just as horrible as killing them."
[18:55:58] <%Somber> "I was going to get in a round of golf this afternoon! Have a heart!" He pleaded as he looked from one to the next.
[18:56:24] Red_Line stops the rolling and gets up with a stretch "We can appeal this, if we like."
[18:57:06] Skyshine nods quietly from the corner she was sitting in. "I want to try the less extreme approach of traditional therapy."
[18:57:09] <%Somber> "Not you too? Oh come on..." He looked around, desperate for a volunteer to have their mind erased. "Look! It doesn't hurt. It's actually fun! Really!"
[18:57:34] Tiller "And you would know, because you've had it?"
[18:58:19] Star_Chaser chuckles. "That sounds like a terrible way to qualify a psychiatrist. Must be a recovered mental patient!"
[18:58:26] Skyshine shakes her head.
[18:58:53] <%Somber> When Aria told him he could go buck himself, he sagged. "Ohhhh... we're going to have to get lawyers involved... There will have to be a hearing... ugh..." He turned. "I'll notify the administrator of your change of heart. She's going to want to set terms." He paused at looked hopeful. "Say! What if I throw in fifty bits? Would that change your mind?"
[18:58:54] Red_Line smerks a little "He probably had it done to his wife."
[19:00:19] Tiller shakes his head.
[19:00:32] Skyshine headtilts. "Why would bits be helpful? Oh yeah! Currency. Little shiney things. I liked the shiney ones..."
[19:01:00] <%Somber> "I did not. That was an accident." He snorted and trotted out, grumbling about fickle mental patients, their stupid rights, and why did they have to be so selfish?
[19:01:08] Star_Chaser snorts. "I don't think even he would be -that- terrible to someone. At least I'd really hope not." She looks back to the doctor. "I don't think fifty bits covers a lifetime's worth of experience. However mangled it may be."
[19:02:12] Skyshine shrugs. "Maybe it depends on your history. I know some wasteland ponies who get addicted to chems and stims would probably take it. If anything, to forget why they started using in the first place."
[19:02:31] Red_Line waves a hoof "Now go off and get those lawyers."
[19:03:51] <%Somber> A half hour later the door opened an a portly brown pegasus trotted in. She looked sternly at the five of them. "I am Administrator Randybuck. I understand you have appealed a medical procedure to erase damaged portions of your psyche?" And she said her name with an utter straight face.
[19:04:58] Tiller "I dispute that my mind is damaged."
[19:06:33] Star_Chaser tilts her head to one side. "I dispute that erasure of someone's entire past is any more acceptable than death." She sighs quietly. "Plus, for whatever problems there are, I don't particularly want to be anyone else."
[19:06:41] <%Somber> "Do you believe you are a survivor in a post apocalyptic wasteland struggling for survivial against incredible odds?" She asked Tiller with a steep frown.
[19:08:02] Tiller "There's no 'belief' here, only knowledge. And my wife would take issue with that description. Our home life is nothing so serious."
[19:08:12] <%Somber> "We would agree. You six were seen as stable candidates at first. Then one of you tried to burn down the hospital and another killed a doctor with a nine-iron."
[19:08:17] Tiller "I /like/ my memories. I want to keep them."
[19:09:07] Red_Line shrugs "I thought that I was hierd to do some work, but now I'm here of all plces."
[19:09:56] <Red_Line> places*
[19:10:06] <%Somber> She took a deep breath. "Very well. It will take a week to organize an appeal. The question is how shall you spend that time? In here, under confinement? Or can we trust you around town not to cause trouble?
[19:10:52] Tiller "Can I send my wife a letter?"
[19:12:08] Star_Chaser rubs her face. "I don't have any interest in murdering some ponies who haven't done anything to me, if that's your concern. I think Aria snapped under the pressure. But I doubt it will happen again now that she's aware of what's going on."
[19:12:11] Red_Line looks around "Well this place seams nice and all. But the town sounds better to me. What do the rest of ya'll think."
[19:12:35] <%Somber> "You can, but our records show she is diseased. If it will make you feel better, then by all means." She frowned at their talk but sighed and nodded.
[19:13:41] Skyshine looks to Aria and Star Chaser. "I'll do whatever the group figures is best."
[19:14:51] <%Somber> "Very well. I don't like to lock anypony up if I can help it. However, there are some conditions. We will fit you all with tracking collars. You may not leave town limits. Doing so will prompt your return here for incarceration till your appeal."
[19:18:46] Red_Line "Oh collars, kinky."
[19:19:03] Star_Chaser sighs quietly, then nods her head. "Don't like it. But better than being locked up in a small room."
[19:21:11] Skyshine looks at Randybuck. "Um, I don't want to be a bother, but would we be able to stretch our wings a bit? Obviously we can't leave town, but..." She flutters her wings slightly.
[19:23:08] <%Somber> Very Well. We shall have to make some arrangements as well at the Shady Hollows Inn." She looked at Skyshine, "I'm afraid not. We have air defense systems here that have difficulty differentiating between friend and foe. Once your appeal is resolved, you can leave and fly all you want. I wouldn't blame you. Sometimes this town makes me feel like a
[19:23:11] <%Somber> turkey."
[19:24:02] Red_Line "Whats a turkey?"
[19:27:01] <%Somber> "According to my subordinates behind my back, me," she said archly. "Well, if there is no other objection, we'll get things squared away. Just be aware that if you get in trouble again, you will be confined here and we may be forced to do complete memory reformat regardless of the appeal. Understood? Behave yourselves."
[19:27:01] Skyshine sighs. No flying, no fun. "Oh, um... I don't want to be a bother, but that heartmender that saw us earlier... she didn't get into trouble, did she?"
[19:27:23] <%Somber> "She did. She was not authorized to speak with you alone."
[19:27:48] Tiller frowns. "That's not fair. She was only trying to help us."
[19:28:26] Star_Chaser stands up slowly and sighs. "Understandable." She was not happy about this, but wasn't surprised either.
[19:28:42] <%Somber> "Her intentions are not out concern, only her action. She'll be relieving a written repremand. I know you and she had history, but that's no excuse."
[19:29:36] Skyshine frowns slightly. "I wish I could remember this history..."
[19:29:53] Tiller "What if we asked for her to be assigned to our case?"
[19:30:50] Red_Line "I don't think thats going to happen."
[19:30:51] <%Somber> "So long as you do no injuries to her and have no objections, I can do so. She's interested in your case. That is better than most."
[19:31:36] <%Somber> "If you don't, I can order her not to bother you. After hours, though, I have no control over her actions."
[19:33:26] Tiller "Well, I thought she was perfectly nice and a good advocate for us. So I'd like her to be our heartmender. Assuming there are no objections?"
[19:34:09] Red_Line hmmmss... "Nurses and kinky collars, and I thought this was a hospital."
[19:35:06] Star_Chaser groans a little at Red Line's words, then sighs. "She's better than anyone else we've met here so far. No offense."
[19:36:12] Red_Line "Oh she was nice. If nice was what you are looking for." then shrugs
[19:36:13] Skyshine shakes her head at Red Line's words. "Somepony needs a cold shower..." She sighs. "So do I..."
[19:37:35] <%Somber> She sighed and nods. "Very well. I'll assign her your case manager. There will be some manditory therapy sessions for you to attend. Besides that, sit and enjoy. Shady Hollows has remained aloof from most of the war, though you may run into many of the victims here. IF you like we can schedual meetings with friend and family, if you like."
[19:38:11] Tiller nods vigorously. "Yes. I want to see my daughter."
[19:39:59] Star_Chaser frowns at that. "I'm not even sure I still have family. Had family?" She sighs quietly.
[19:40:39] <%Somber> "Your records do not show any on file. But there were several members of your old military unit listed. You can contact them if you like." she said to Star Chaser.
[19:40:56] Skyshine looks sad and trots over, putting a wing over Star Chaser's back.
[19:41:14] Star_Chaser rubs a foreleg with her other foreleg. "..." She looks down quietly, though doesn't complain when Skyshine moves next to her.
[19:43:26] <%Somber> The director then looks at all of them coolly. "I sympathize with your situtation. I do. Hundreds were stricken by the sick 'game' and we've been all but powerless to undo the damage. Never the less, cause trouble for me or this town, and you will find my sympathy quickly spent. Do I make myself clear?"
[19:43:56] Skyshine nods. "Quite clear, miss."
[19:45:04] Star_Chaser nods her head quietly.
[19:45:12] Red_Line nods to Randybuck "No trouble form us, not one bit."
[19:46:37] <%Somber> She walk out an a few minutes later, Azure Wing returns with five collars draped across her back. She wore a tiny smile. "You're appealing? That's great! That's..." her eyes drifted over to Skyshine. "...great..."
[19:48:17] Star_Chaser sat quietly beside Skyshine, looking at the grass. Mulling something over in her thoughts.
[19:48:30] Tiller "It's a great deal better than the alternative, yes."
[19:48:32] Skyshine offers Azure an awkward smile.
[19:51:18] <%Somber> She passes out the collars. "Just put them all. They should auto adjust to be snug but not choking. You don't have to put them around your neck either. Upper forelegs are fine too... though I find they get caught on things."
[19:51:50] Star_Chaser frowns and takes the collar, securing it to one of her forelegs.
[19:52:19] Red_Line glances at Azure quickly then turns away with the collar
[19:52:32] Skyshine looks at the collar, hoping it'll secure to her thin foreleg, mentally cursing her small frame.
[19:53:10] <%Somber> Sadly, it doesn't. She gives a sheepish smile to Skyshine. "Er... most pony's forelegs..."
[19:53:37] Skyshine sighs, slipping it around her neck.
[19:54:25] Red_Line looking at his foreleg then a hindleg "Can we put them on our hindlegs as well?"
[19:54:58] <%Somber> "I know you probably hate me for saying so, but you look good like that." She said as the collar snugged down to the limbs and necks. She looked back at red. "Ahh... there's significant issue of chafing with the collars and males... back there..."
[19:55:17] Tiller holds out his left hoof. "Here, please. I want to remind myself."
[19:57:16] Red_Line rolls his eyes, putting the tracker on a forelimb "Better a shackle than a collar."
[19:57:22] Star_Chaser sighs quietly and slowly stands up.
[19:57:30] <%Somber> She nods and puts the collar on his left leg, up above the knee. It tightens down snuggly. "Don't try and pull them off. That will just make them go tighter. In addition to location, you can use them to make purchases. You'll each get a one hundred bit stipend for purchases while you wait on your appeal.
[19:58:30] Star_Chaser blinks and frowns. "That's... An interesting prospect. But thank you."
[20:01:34] Skyshine struggles to not fiddle with the collar. "I'd like it better if it were just a necklace..."
[20:02:00] <%Somber> "They're quite common here for many patients. You shouldn't stand out too much."
[20:03:40] Skyshine shakes her head. "No, I mean one that isn't a choker. Must. Not. Fiddle. Like oxygen..."
[20:03:54] <%Somber> They did rather resemble necklaced, with a rather thick band and a talisman in the middle. Still, it wasn't hard to imagine a few explosives connected to them.
[20:04:29] <%Somber> She smiled and nuzzled Skyshine's cheek. "That one won't get any tighter if it's on a neck.
[20:05:02] Skyshine blushes at the cheek nuzzle, and looks down. "Oh... well, um... thank you."
[20:05:59] Star_Chaser sighs quietly. "I imagine they'd have to have some safety mechanism. Keep them from breaking bones, or strangling you."
[20:06:57] Aria [[email protected]] joined the channel.
[20:07:18] <%Somber> "Yes. They're tracking devices, not punative devices. Though some ponies..." she started, then sighed and shook her head.
[20:13:13] Red_Line gives an ear flop a that last bit of Azure's comment
[20:13:22] Aria looks around a little dazed.
[20:13:23] <%Somber> She looked at all of them, making sure they have their collars on. "Well, we've made arrangements at the Shady Bed and Breakfast. Shall we?"
[20:13:23] Tiller shrugs. "Whatever. Open the doors already, I wanna see some sunshine."
[20:14:08] Tiller "Yes, please. And I want you to sit down with us and go over what's going to be involved in the appeal process."
[20:14:46] Red_Line "And a bed and breakfast. Well that nice of them."
[20:15:22] Skyshine whispers to Aria and Star Chaser "What's a bed and breakfast?"
[20:15:33] <%Somber> "Shady is infamous for it's cloudy weather, but we'll see." She said brightly as she walked to the door. "Well, you'll be tested for mental competence, meet with your lawywers, and have a hearing about why you shouldn't be wiped." She looked at Red. "Well, of course. This is Equestria after all. Should we kick you on the curb till your appeal?"
[20:16:58] Star_Chaser shakes her head. "Something like somewhere you stay when not at home, I guess." She moves after the mare, curious as to what they would find outside the doors.
[20:17:06] Aria looks to Skyshine. "I think it's like an inn, but smaller or something." She looks at the 'heartmender' nervously.
[20:17:50] Red_Line "Nah... I was thinking like a seedy motel or something."
[20:18:06] Tiller "It's more like a big house that's run like a miniature comfy inn. The owners live there too, and like the name says, you get a bed and breakfast."
[20:18:45] Skyshine nods in thanks to Tiller. "Ah, ok! Thanks for clearing that up, Tiller." She says with a smile.
[20:18:49] <%Somber> The door led to a hall and down the hall they went. Then they passed a pony. A familiar pony. He had some bandages obscuring his face; clearly he'd been burned recently. But his eyes stared vacantly ahead as he was pushed along in his wheelchair by an orderly, muttering every few seconds, 'Boom. Boom. Boom.'
[20:19:11] Tiller looks wistful. "I've fantasized about opening one often, but I never had the capital and Quiet Moon hates the idea of being tied down. Er, figuratively."
[20:19:27] Star_Chaser blinks and shudders slightly as the see another pushed by. Not a good thing.
[20:19:32] Tiller "The bedroom was something else though." He has a longing look in his eyes.
[20:22:30] Skyshine skids to a halt. "Modd?"
[20:22:35] Red_Line looks to the pony in a wheelchair "Well there he's been."
[20:23:21] <Red_Line> "How's the crazy been for you Madd?"
[20:24:00] Skyshine looks really concerned. "Is he ok? What happened?"
[20:24:30] Somber just stared straight ahead. A little line of drool ran down his cheek. 'Boom.' he muttered weakly. "Aria attacked a doctor with a nine iron. He tried to blow up the hospital lobby."
[20:25:21] Aria stares at Mad Modd in horror. Looking down at him, a sense of dread overtaking her. She killed a pony. "This is going to be me," she whispered.
[20:25:53] Skyshine puts a wing over Aria's shoulder. "No, no it isn't. I won't let you."
[20:26:07] Star_Chaser frowns and sighs. "He always seemed a little crazier than most. Still seems cruel to do that to him." SHe looked to Aria. "No. It's not. Because you're not that crazy. And you're going to prove it. Stress and an unknown situation led to rash decisions. That's not the same."
[20:26:40] Aria swallows hard and leans into Skyshine's wing.
[20:26:45] Tiller shivers. No. Nononononono. No.
[20:27:10] Skyshine gives Star Chaser a contemplative look. "You seem to know more about that than you let on."
[20:28:25] <%Somber> "We'll get him the care he needs. We're having trouble locating family, but we have a few personality templates he can build from till we do." Azure said, keeping her eyes away from him in the chair.
[20:29:00] Star_Chaser looks away and rubs a forehoof. "If it is all really fake, then I guess I don't. If not..." She sighs quietly. "Sometimes you do what you think is right, even when it's not what's easy. Sometimes you're not so sure it was the right thing to do after you do it." She looks back up down the hallway again.
[20:30:08] Skyshine gives Azure a sidelong glance. "You have a personality template for completely random and loves watching fireworks?" She lays her ears back as Star Chaser speaks. "Sometimes that's the hard part about doing the right thing. Not being sure if it was it."
[20:30:31] <Aria> "I thought it was just an illusion. I thought she wasn't real. I was wrong..."
[20:31:03] Star_Chaser shakes her head, then looks to Aria. "Extremes of circumstances. I'm sure they'll understand." She frowned. She had to hope they'd understand, right?
[20:31:16] Tiller tries to be comforting. "Let's just try to get through this, okay?"
[20:32:15] Skyshine hugs Aria closer. "You were trying to do the right thing. Trying to protect us. Like Star Chaser is saying, it was the extremes of the circumstances. Everypony has good inside them, don't give up on yourself just yet. I'm not saying it'll be easy, but... we're here."
[20:32:54] <%Somber> They reached a security check point, where an orderly checked their collars, then they stepped into a lobby and then... then out into a bright and clear day. A day with green trees and dark mountains and the sun in the sky. The streets were full of ponies! Ponies shopping. Ponies talking. Ponies working. There were a few griffons about too, wearing the
[20:33:33] <%Somber> armor for 'talon private security' and a few uniformed ponies around. But everything was clean and fresh and bright. The exact opposite of the wasteland!
[20:34:33] Star_Chaser blinks a few moments and shields her eyes from the sun with a forehoof. She frowned a few moments about something as she watched the surroundings.
[20:34:36] Tiller looks around in wonder. "So this is what it looked like before the war. I never thought I'd be so happy to see a street with no litter!"
[20:34:47] Aria starts shaking slightly at the sight of all the green trees. It was like home back in the orchard in Stable Two.
[20:36:20] <%Somber> Not just green trees. Green grass. Green bushes. Flowers! Actual FLOWERS. For prettifying!
[20:36:40] Tiller gapes. "Screw going back home, I wanna bring Quiet Moon and Sweet Breeze here!"
[20:37:17] Red_Line nods "Who wants to go sightseeing after we check in to the bed and breakfast?"
[20:37:53] Skyshine skitters behind Aria. So. Many. Ponies.
[20:38:42] Tiller "I think I'd like to. I've got a couple things on my list, but they can wait for evening when the light is gone."
[20:39:08] <%Somber> "Shady Hollow isn't much of a tourism down, but you're free to see as much of it as you like," she said as she lead them down the street.
[20:39:26] Star_Chaser nods her head and looks around again. "Getting checked in would be good, and getting something to eat maybe."
[20:40:29] Aria looks back to Skyshine with a worried look. "We'll be strong together, right, Sky?"
[20:41:33] Red_Line smacks his lips "Yes, food would be good right. A bite to eat sounds like the next stop on the list."
[20:42:21] Skyshine nods, taking a breath. "Right. Strong together."
[20:42:35] <%Somber> She beams a smile. "What are you in the mood for? There's a nice Nipponese restaraunt. Or zebranese if you're feeling exotic, though it's pretty spicy."
[20:42:55] Star_Chaser blinks. "Uh. Surprise me?"
[20:43:06] Aria blinks. "Zebra food? During the war?"
[20:44:29] <%Somber> "What? We're not bigots," she said with a sniff. "Sure, most of the zebra families have relocated to zebra town, but there's still a few remaining. The Oraboras run one of the best restaurants in town and I'm not ashamed to eat there."
[20:45:04] Aria looks away. "No, I just... I didn't expect that..."
[20:45:14] Skyshine scuffs a hoof on the ground, admiring how soft it is. "Um... are strawberries in season?"
[20:45:49] Tiller "Whatever's the most exotic. I want to make the most of this."
[20:45:50] <%Somber> "If they're not, I'll fly some special from Applelanta just for you, Sky." she said with a little wink.
[20:47:41] <%Somber> "To the Hungry Snake then." She said as she lead them down a side street.
[20:48:00] Star_Chaser looks around at the buildings, keeping pace with their guide.
[20:48:24] Red_Line "Well any place would be fine by me, as long it's good." he said with a smile
[20:48:35] Aria looks around, trying to figure things out. If this wasn't real, then what would they be eating. Her spells and Pipbuck couldn't be trusted so she was completely clueless as to what they were to do. Sighing, she followed.
[20:49:07] Skyshine blushes and shakes her head. "No, that's ok. I was just wondering. Did you ever get strawberry rations at home, Star?"
[20:49:12] Tiller "Wait, wait, the restaurant run by the 'Oraboras' family is called 'The Hungry Snake'? Interesting."
[20:50:11] Star_Chaser blinks and looks back towards Skyshine. "Don't think so..?" She frowned. "Maybe once or twice. Not any time recently."
[20:51:57] Red_Line is looking at all the sights he as only seen in books in wonderment
[20:53:26] <%Somber> A veil fell across the street. The green grass and verdant trees withered and decayed instantly. The ponies walking around faded like ghosts, and the babble of conversations rose to a screaming cacophony. The bright shops became decrepit and defiled. The walls cracked and the streets buckled. And then came an incoherent scream as a stallion seemed to man
[20:53:41] <%Somber> manifest out of the fog wielding a fire axe.
[20:54:07] Tiller sighs. "Aw. I was hoping it would last."
[20:55:17] <%Somber> Four ponies, one with an axe, one with a knife, one with a rifle and one with a pistol, charged in screaming. Fortunately, their barding and weapons were back as well.
[20:58:11] Aria hisses as the knife cuts into her shoulder.
[20:58:49] <%Somber> They raced in like ghosts from all four sides of the street, blasting and chopping away.
[20:59:14] Skyshine yelps as she's hit, staggering.
[20:59:35] Tiller backs away from the axe murderer as he swings wildly. "Craaaaaap! Why did it have to go to crap!?"
[21:01:25] Tiller turns around and runs away, diving into the deepest darkest shadow he can find.
[21:07:38] Red_Line yells "What the hay is this now?" in a bit of confusion
[21:08:37] Star_Chaser blinks as the shotgun shell is discharged, narrowly missing her. A quiet curse under her breath. "Why wouldn't it? I was wondering why everything looked the way it did. If we're under the influence of some mind-game, it wouldn't stop just because we know we are, would it?" She turned towards her attacker, rifles suddenly returned, spending only a moment to line up before
[21:08:37] Star_Chaser firing off two shots.
[21:11:21] <%Somber> The two shots rip into the emaciated pony, but he resolutely sets to reloading his shotgun.
[21:15:49] Skyshine draws her pistol out of her saddlebags and aims at the pistol weilding pony's foreleg.
[21:20:38] <%Somber> She hits, the stallion yipping in pain at the shot, but growling his promise to give back worse.
[21:21:36] Aria gasp. "Skyshine!" she shouts before trying to pick up the pistol pony with her telekinesis and throwing her.
[21:25:43] <%Somber> The stallion is then yanked with extreme focus into the force and tosses up to land with a crunch a few feet away.
[21:26:07] Aria tosses the pony aside with great effort before jumping between the ponies and Skyshine, 9-Iron drawn.
[21:35:35] Red_Line flings a spell at the one with an axe but does little to them
[21:35:56] <%Somber> Axe glares around for tiller, but not seeing him, slices at red instead. Knives stabs in deep with combat knife, slicing once then punching it in deep.
[21:36:52] <%Somber> Shooty goes wild, peppering shots at Star, but none of the pellets strike anything vital.
[21:38:17] <%Somber> And pistols sends one fat round right into Aria.
[21:41:06] Aria staggers as the bullet and knife rips through her. Blood flowing down her face and chest, she smiles. "Not going to beat me."
