  1. (06:59:30 AM) Syd: Hey everyone! We'll be starting in a few.
  2. (06:59:40 AM) lattsam: Sweet
  3. (06:59:40 AM) nicholasdelucca [bb703a18@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  4. (06:59:54 AM) bookwyrm [4c67eb2f@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  5. (07:00:07 AM) DanCaptain: So how does this work, we just play through portal and talk about it?
  6. (07:00:09 AM) ReverendGumby: Yeehaw.
  7. (07:00:15 AM) nicholasdelucca left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  8. (07:00:32 AM) nicholasdelucca [bb703a18@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  9. (07:00:42 AM) anagromataf left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  10. (07:00:55 AM) Babar left the room (quit: Quit: Miranda IM! Smaller, Faster, Easier. http://miranda-im.org).
  11. (07:01:00 AM) ReverendGumby: I think that's the gist of it.
  12. (07:01:01 AM) anagromataf [4d142228@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  13. (07:01:02 AM) Syd: Yeah. No guests this time, unfortunately. Just a playthrough and chat.
  14. (07:01:22 AM) Syd: A bit of filler since the streamer for the next game we have lined up wasn't able to stream this weekend.
  15. (07:01:31 AM) jeremywc left the room (quit: Quit: jeremywc).
  16. (07:01:33 AM) nicholasdelucca: Is anyone there?
  17. (07:01:37 AM) Cheeseness: Hi hi
  18. spaceLaunchDongle SPartanenWork swordfischer Syd Syd_laptop
  19. (07:01:48 AM) DanCaptain: whats next on the schedule?
  20. (07:01:52 AM) Syd: Okay, starting the stream. Let me know if there's anything wrong, and I'll try to fix it.
  21. (07:02:06 AM) nicholasdelucca: ALLONS-Y!
  22. (07:02:09 AM) Cheeseness: DanCaptain: Next week we'll be playing The Last Express. Portal is what we're doing this week :)
  23. (07:02:19 AM) ReverendGumby: Hi Cheese!
  24. (07:02:23 AM) Cheeseness: Oh noes! I forgot to mention that Syd is streaming!
  25. (07:02:25 AM) Cheeseness: Sorry D:
  26. (07:02:31 AM) Cheeseness: Syd is streaming and is awesome.
  27. (07:02:34 AM) ReverendGumby: Thanks Syd!
  28. (07:02:59 AM) Vexzal left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  29. (07:03:00 AM) Cheeseness: Alrighty, so do we have anybody who hasn't yet played the game?
  30. (07:03:07 AM) Cheeseness: I love that music :D
  31. (07:03:11 AM) ricin: oh portal
  32. (07:03:14 AM) ricin: heh
  33. (07:03:17 AM) DanCaptain: are you gonna do the radio achievment?
  34. (07:03:22 AM) vexzal [4ccbed9e@hide-BF4D4B18.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  35. (07:03:39 AM) Cheeseness: DanCaptain: I reckon Syd will get some on the way, but probably won't grab all of them
  36. (07:03:47 AM) nicholasdelucca: Related: http://www.thegamercat.com/2012/07/toilet-science/
  37. (07:03:56 AM) PerryD [3ea30cf4@hide-BF4D4B18.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  38. (07:04:30 AM) ReverendGumby: What's the radio achievement?
  39. (07:04:44 AM) Cheeseness: ReverendGumby: In the leadup to the Portal 2 announcement, they added additional radios in a patch
  40. (07:04:57 AM) lattsam: It's when you pick up every radio and bring them to a specific location
  41. (07:05:04 AM) Cheeseness: These radios can be taken to specific points in the levels where a morse code transmission is heard
  42. (07:05:14 AM) ReverendGumby: Neato.
  43. (07:05:16 AM) nicholasdelucca: it was part of an ARG for Portal 2
  44. (07:05:19 AM) Cheeseness: This all played a part in the pre-Portal 2 announcement ARG
  45. (07:05:30 AM) DanCaptain: they also changed the ending
  46. (07:05:34 AM) Cheeseness: Subtly
  47. (07:05:35 AM) DanCaptain: slightly
  48. (07:05:42 AM) nicholasdelucca: softly
  49. (07:05:43 AM) Syd_laptop: Nah
  50. (07:05:50 AM) anagromataf left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  51. (07:06:15 AM) Cheeseness: I find the intentional gating to be interesting
  52. (07:06:54 AM) ReverendGumby: Ah.
  53. (07:06:56 AM) Cheeseness: In this room in particular, GLaDOS has a fairly long line where the player is trapped in a small room with a window overlooking the Portal device so that players will eventually see what's going on from a perspective that should make it easier to understand the mechanics
  54. (07:07:14 AM) ArchStanton [48cc1c18@hide-BF4D4B18.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  55. (07:07:20 AM) anagromataf [4d142228@hide-B64552F4.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  56. (07:07:53 AM) ReverendGumby: The developer commentary mentions a few of those points.
  57. (07:08:02 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah
  58. (07:08:03 AM) anagromataf left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  59. (07:08:16 AM) nicholasdelucca: Vital Testing Apparatus destroyed
  60. (07:08:17 AM) anagromataf [4d142228@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  61. (07:08:28 AM) Cheeseness: What the commentary doesn't focus on is that this is executed in a way that doesn't feel like handholding
  62. (07:08:49 AM) Cheeseness: It's a tough balance that very few games succeed at to the extent that Portal has
  63. (07:08:52 AM) ReverendGumby: Yeah, like it's real gameplay instead of tutorial.
  64. (07:09:00 AM) ArchStanton left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  65. (07:09:02 AM) nicholasdelucca: And it's not boring
  66. (07:09:43 AM) ArchStanton [48cc1c18@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  67. (07:10:00 AM) ReverendGumby: Poor radios!
  68. (07:10:35 AM) lattsam: And I liked that song they play, too!
  69. (07:10:47 AM) Cheeseness: When I had a phone, it was my ringtone :D
  70. (07:10:55 AM) nicholasdelucca: It'll get stuck in your mind FOREVER!
  71. (07:11:11 AM) Cheeseness: It never leaves :D
  72. (07:11:20 AM) nicholasdelucca: You don't have a phone now?
  73. (07:11:23 AM) ArchStanton: i didn't even remember there was a radio
  74. (07:11:28 AM) Cheeseness: Oh, I got the Portal 2 boxed sountrack set the other day. I haven't looked to see if the radio music is on it
  75. (07:11:28 AM) lattsam: It gets stuck in my head too
  76. (07:11:34 AM) Cheeseness: nicholasdelucca: Nah, I was glad to get rid of it
  77. (07:11:38 AM) lattsam: Da da da DA da... da da da DA da DA da DA
  78. (07:11:40 AM) anagromataf: has the streamer played the game before?
  79. Syd Syd_laptop
  80. (07:11:49 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah, Syd's played it many times
  81. (07:11:52 AM) nicholasdelucca: Good question...
  82. (07:12:01 AM) ArchStanton: my wife wanted to play the turret song at our wedding. i veto'd that.
  83. (07:12:06 AM) Cheeseness: Aww
  84. (07:12:13 AM) nicholasdelucca: WHY?
  85. (07:12:53 AM) ArchStanton: much as i love some portal, it ain't exactly something that makes the top cut for wedding festivities
  86. (07:13:02 AM) lattsam: And what's wrong with that?
  87. (07:13:40 AM) ricin: why not? if you can't have some fun at your wedding, you're doing it all wrong
  88. (07:13:50 AM) ReverendGumby: Two points for ricin.
  89. (07:14:28 AM) Fireflower: could have a cosplay wedding
  90. (07:14:37 AM) ArchStanton: oh, we had massive fun. there's a lot of things with way more party in them than a solo puzzle game.
  91. (07:14:45 AM) nicholasdelucca: I think a wedding has to reflect who's getting married
  92. (07:15:16 AM) nicholasdelucca: So if Portal is part of your life, make it part of your wedding!
  93. (07:15:22 AM) ReverendGumby: Speedy thing?
  94. (07:15:23 AM) Cheeseness: GLaDOS' malfunctions were a great way to disguise and streamline exposition/tutorialy type stuff
  95. (07:15:28 AM) ArchStanton: this is someone who has defnitely played recently
  96. (07:15:34 AM) lattsam: Speedy thing goes in, speedy thing goes out
  97. (07:16:01 AM) nicholasdelucca: lattsam know his/her/it's Portal dialogue
  98. (07:16:09 AM) nicholasdelucca: *knows
  99. (07:16:28 AM) nicholasdelucca: Oh I like this part
  100. (07:16:37 AM) Cheeseness: The pacing of this part is interesting too
  101. (07:16:39 AM) ArchStanton: did portal 1 have a co-op mode?
  102. (07:16:46 AM) nicholasdelucca: no
  103. (07:16:48 AM) Cheeseness: ArchStanton: No
  104. (07:16:52 AM) ReverendGumby: When I picked this game up, I wanted to wait until the weekend to try it out. I didn't make it, and stayed up until 6 AM to finish it.
  105. (07:16:58 AM) lattsam: ArchStanton but Portal 2 does
  106. (07:17:02 AM) Cheeseness: You may have messed up the timing, Syd
  107. (07:17:04 AM) ReverendGumby: There was no way I could put it down.
  108. (07:17:26 AM) Cheeseness: I played it through twice in my first sitting :D
  109. (07:17:46 AM) nicholasdelucca: I got Portal when Valve was giving it out on Steam for free
  110. (07:17:57 AM) Cheeseness: I bought the Orange Box for Portal
  111. (07:18:02 AM) ReverendGumby: I got the Orange Box for 360.
  112. (07:18:16 AM) nicholasdelucca: and since my PC was veeeery slow I had to play it on my Grandparents PC
  113. (07:18:25 AM) ArchStanton: yeah, orange box was it for a while i think
  114. (07:18:33 AM) nicholasdelucca: in the slowest settings, no less
  115. (07:18:33 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah, you couldn't buy it on its own for ages
  116. (07:19:04 AM) Cheeseness: (I'm glad for that though - I wasn't interested in any of the other Orange Box titles and I wouldn't have gotten into TF2 otherwise)
  117. (07:19:09 AM) nicholasdelucca: Now it seems like Valve uses it as a gateway drug to Steam :D
  118. (07:19:14 AM) ArchStanton: i had never played all the half life 2 stuff either, so that still ranks as most bang for your buck in one game ever
  119. (07:19:22 AM) Cheeseness: :D
  120. (07:19:39 AM) ArchStanton: though I have to say, I just got that DF / Capy bundle today and that's a lot of game for cheap.
  121. (07:19:55 AM) Cheeseness: I'm sad to have missed out on the racer disks ;_;
  122. (07:20:00 AM) nicholasdelucca: The one with the racing game?
  123. (07:20:05 AM) Fireflower: Wii?
  124. (07:20:06 AM) ReverendGumby: lol
  125. (07:20:17 AM) ArchStanton: racing game?
  126. (07:20:21 AM) ReverendGumby: Wii[bzzt]
  127. (07:20:36 AM) Cheeseness: Capy and DF did a small pixel art racing game for PAX
  128. (07:20:54 AM) Cheeseness: This chamber is fun in the challenge maps
  129. (07:21:19 AM) spaceLaunchDongle left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  130. (07:21:28 AM) DanCaptain left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  131. (07:21:39 AM) Cheeseness: Foreshadowing ^_^
  132. (07:21:46 AM) ReverendGumby: GlaDOS foreshadowing
  133. (07:21:47 AM) nicholasdelucca: archstanton http://www.polygon.com/2013/3/22/4134448/capybara-games-unveils-new-title-capy-fine-racing-gp-at-pax-east
  134. (07:22:47 AM) ArchStanton: hrm. so wait till it goes online?
  135. (07:23:00 AM) nicholasdelucca: Let's hope
  136. (07:23:01 AM) ReverendGumby: I am still impressed with the color palette, all grey-blues and reds. And I always wanted to duck beneath the stairs into the red areas.
  137. (07:23:54 AM) ArchStanton: i just bought an adapter for a 5 1/4" drive. I've been trying for a month to pull stuff off some of those disks
  138. (07:23:54 AM) nicholasdelucca: reds...
  139. (07:23:55 AM) lattsam: Heh
  140. (07:24:19 AM) ReverendGumby: Help me!
  141. (07:24:33 AM) nicholasdelucca: how?
  142. (07:24:33 AM) ArchStanton: was the first portal the one with the random hidden areas where the crazy guy lived?
  143. ArchStanton Arthur_D
  144. (07:24:44 AM) Cheeseness: ArchStanton: They both do
  145. (07:25:06 AM) Cheeseness: Have we had the "Remember: The Aperture Science Bring Your Daughter to Work Day is the perfect time to have her tested." line yet?
  146. (07:25:13 AM) ReverendGumby: Yep.
  147. (07:25:33 AM) ArchStanton: yo, playing person. If you can hear us, nod.
  148. (07:25:57 AM) ArchStanton: lol, OK
  149. (07:26:07 AM) Cheeseness: Ah, damn. That's the only time that sex (or gender depending on how you want to look at it) is mentioned in the game,
  150. (07:26:21 AM) lattsam: I remember Bring Your Daughter To Work Day... and I bet Chell does too
  151. (07:26:30 AM) nicholasdelucca: And potatoes
  152. (07:26:55 AM) Cheeseness: And that one
  153. (07:26:58 AM) ReverendGumby: There's your second gender mention.
  154. (07:27:01 AM) Cheeseness: only other one
  155. (07:27:21 AM) Cheeseness: I really appreciated Portal's all-female cast
  156. (07:27:38 AM) ReverendGumby: Huh, hadn't thought about that.
  157. (07:27:42 AM) nicholasdelucca: The turrets are female?
  158. (07:27:46 AM) Cheeseness: And that it didn't draw attention to or sexualise that aspect of the game (as is pretty common in the industry)
  159. (07:27:48 AM) ReverendGumby: They do sound it, no?
  160. (07:27:55 AM) ArchStanton: was same voice actor?
  161. (07:27:56 AM) Cheeseness: They're voiced by Ellen (same actress that does GLaDOS)
  162. (07:27:59 AM) Fireflower: i want a military android phone
  163. (07:28:05 AM) lattsam: Ellen McClain is a voice goddessa
  164. (07:28:19 AM) nicholasdelucca: I never though much about it,I just though it was a genderless robot
  165. (07:28:38 AM) Cheeseness: I shot an email to her agent asking if she'd have time and interest in joining us, but I don't think we had enough lead time
  166. (07:28:45 AM) Cheeseness: (playing Portal was a fairly last minute decision)
  167. (07:28:50 AM) nicholasdelucca: Though GLaDOS surely is female :D
  168. (07:28:53 AM) ArchStanton: oh yeah, forgot cake is a lie
  169. (07:29:06 AM) ReverendGumby: And thus a mythos was born.
  170. (07:29:19 AM) Cheeseness: The use of music is also very subtle in this game
  171. (07:29:54 AM) Cheeseness: The first wrench I think
  172. (07:29:59 AM) nicholasdelucca: I think this is the chamber I most played
  173. (07:30:10 AM) nicholasdelucca: I loved playing aroud with the turrets :)
  174. (07:30:22 AM) nicholasdelucca: *around
  175. (07:30:30 AM) Cheeseness: Not being able to knock the turrets over makes for an interesting variation in the advanced maps
  176. (07:30:38 AM) ReverendGumby: I can't remember playing a first-person puzzle game that compares with this.
  177. (07:30:48 AM) Cheeseness: owowowowowow
  178. (07:31:21 AM) nicholasdelucca: Seems like this is going to be a quick playtrough
  179. (07:31:21 AM) lattsam: Speaking of, I need to complete Quantum Conundrum one day
  180. (07:31:30 AM) nicholasdelucca: yeah, me too
  181. (07:31:36 AM) Cheeseness: I haven't finished the DLC yet. Man it's hard
  182. (07:31:39 AM) ricin: narbacular drop :P
  183. (07:31:40 AM) lattsam: Well, Portal IS a short game
  184. (07:31:42 AM) ReverendGumby: lattsam, yes, that's a fun one.
  185. (07:31:58 AM) Fireflower: 1 hour playthrough?
  186. (07:32:04 AM) lattsam: ReverendGumby from Kim Swift, the Portal goddess herself
  187. (07:32:08 AM) Cheeseness: I think that Portal is very close to the best length it could possibly be
  188. (07:32:18 AM) nicholasdelucca: Yeah, but since who's playing already beat the game, it's going to be even quicker
  189. (07:32:30 AM) ArchStanton: I didn't realize you could get through it this quickly
  190. (07:32:33 AM) Cheeseness: Narbacular drop was the student game that led Vavle to hire Kim and her team to make Portal
  191. (07:34:01 AM) Fireflower: when was the game released?
  192. (07:34:11 AM) nicholasdelucca: Which game?
  193. (07:34:11 AM) ReverendGumby: 2006?
  194. (07:34:14 AM) Cheeseness: In Portal, there are no references to Doug. There are no mentions or references to male characters in this game.
  195. (07:34:18 AM) Cheeseness: October 2006, I think?
  196. (07:34:22 AM) Fireflower: ok
  197. (07:34:28 AM) nicholasdelucca: Ah Portal? Yes
  198. (07:34:28 AM) ReverendGumby: Doug?
  199. (07:34:49 AM) nicholasdelucca: The guy who worte the hidden messages in the game
  200. (07:34:51 AM) Cheeseness: Doug Rattman is the character that supposedly left the little living spaces
  201. (07:34:52 AM) nicholasdelucca: *wrote
  202. (07:34:53 AM) lattsam: So GLaDOS is a feminazi, then? :P
  203. (07:35:11 AM) lattsam: jk
  204. (07:35:15 AM) hng: lattsam: :\
  205. (07:35:52 AM) nicholasdelucca: I think she's more of preoccupied with birds than males ;)
  206. (07:35:57 AM) lattsam: yeah
  207. (07:35:59 AM) nicholasdelucca: ARGH
  208. (07:36:02 AM) Cheeseness: There aren't any birds in this game either
  209. (07:36:05 AM) Cheeseness: :D
  210. (07:36:16 AM) lattsam: But wait till Portal 2
  211. (07:36:19 AM) nicholasdelucca: Where's the edit button...
  212. (07:36:26 AM) Cheeseness: D: Syd. How could you?
  213. (07:36:29 AM) ReverendGumby: Don't kill the cube!
  214. (07:36:32 AM) ReverendGumby: You bastard.
  215. (07:36:51 AM) bookwyrm left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  216. (07:37:03 AM) Cheeseness: I don't think she appreciates being called a bastard :b
  217. (07:37:07 AM) nicholasdelucca: the tone that GLaDOS speaks the line makes it perfect
  218. (07:37:15 AM) lattsam: The cube has a wife and three children!
  219. (07:37:29 AM) nicholasdelucca: the "you killed the cube faster..." line
  220. (07:37:29 AM) lattsam: ...That's what I would say if it actually HAD a wife and three children
  221. (07:38:00 AM) Cheeseness: I tried for a very long time to find alternatives to killing the cube
  222. (07:38:02 AM) ReverendGumby: Sorry, Chell.
  223. (07:38:04 AM) bookwyrm [4c67eb2f@hide-6C77D8AA.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  224. (07:38:06 AM) Cheeseness: Mim on the other hand did it straight away
  225. (07:38:17 AM) nicholasdelucca: Oh, this level is hard the first time you play it
  226. (07:38:30 AM) lattsam: That One Level
  227. (07:38:45 AM) nicholasdelucca: cheeseness You Monster
  228. (07:39:00 AM) nicholasdelucca: The Part Where He Kills You
  229. (07:39:08 AM) Cheeseness: I think that the cube's emotional impact would have been heightened if it were introduced in the previous chamber, allowing it to break the 'no items between chambers' rule and actually allowing for the expectation that you might be able to save it
  230. (07:39:28 AM) Cheeseness: But that wouldn't have fitted with the previous chamber, and an additional one would have disrupted the flow and pacing of the game
  231. (07:39:41 AM) ReverendGumby: Cheeseness, I might never have finished the game if they'd done that.
  232. (07:39:50 AM) Cheeseness: :D
  233. (07:40:02 AM) ReverendGumby: I agonized enough the first time as it was
  234. (07:40:04 AM) nicholasdelucca: Well it kinda happened in Portal 2, you could save it, but GLaDOS would destroy it at the last second
  235. (07:40:20 AM) Cheeseness: That wasn't "your" companion cube though
  236. (07:40:40 AM) lattsam: Chamber 18 is the Meat Circus of Portal 1
  237. (07:40:40 AM) Cheeseness: And the emotional trick had already been pulled. There was no way it was going to have any real impact in Portal 2
  238. (07:40:43 AM) nicholasdelucca: Yeah, but it was "a" companion cube nevertheless
  239. (07:41:02 AM) Cheeseness: Those cubes didn't even look like the cubes from Portal 1
  240. (07:41:15 AM) Cheeseness: I imagine that few players felt attached to them at all
  241. (07:41:21 AM) Cheeseness: Ha
  242. (07:41:28 AM) lattsam: I felt attached to mine
  243. (07:41:35 AM) ReverendGumby: Syd demonstrates why I spent EONS on this level.
  244. (07:41:38 AM) nicholasdelucca: Me too
  245. (07:41:50 AM) Cheeseness: lattsam: The first ones in Portal 2 that GLaDOS destroys to mock you?
  246. (07:42:00 AM) lattsam: Yep
  247. (07:42:04 AM) Cheeseness: Interesting ^_^
  248. (07:42:11 AM) Cheeseness: I've never spoken to anybody before who did :D
  249. (07:42:28 AM) nicholasdelucca: Now you spoke with two
  250. (07:42:40 AM) Fireflower: Cubism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cubism
  251. (07:42:42 AM) lattsam: I even tried to take one to the level exit
  252. (07:42:52 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah, there's an achievement for that
  253. (07:42:57 AM) ReverendGumby: Syd: Impatient much?
  254. (07:43:12 AM) ReverendGumby: Yay!
  255. (07:43:16 AM) ricin: "there's an achievement for that" is the new "there's an app for that"
  256. (07:43:18 AM) lattsam: Even LPers and streamers can have a hard time with this level
  257. (07:43:38 AM) GameClubFan_744557 [547001a7@hide-BF4D4B18.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  258. (07:43:41 AM) Cheeseness: I love this level
  259. (07:43:43 AM) lattsam: Here's where it gets all Meat Circusy
  260. (07:43:44 AM) ReverendGumby: This is quite possibly one of my favorite chambers.
  261. (07:43:53 AM) lattsam: WHEEEEE!
  262. (07:44:03 AM) nicholasdelucca: ARGH!
  263. (07:44:08 AM) ReverendGumby: Again!
  264. (07:44:12 AM) nicholasdelucca: I love/hate this level
  265. (07:44:14 AM) PerryD left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  266. (07:44:41 AM) lattsam: Here we go... the final chamber (for now)
  267. (07:44:50 AM) ReverendGumby: Muahahahaa
  268. (07:45:00 AM) nicholasdelucca: You monster
  269. (07:45:04 AM) lattsam: Yay Chamber 19!
  270. (07:45:15 AM) ReverendGumby: Longest chamber ever.
  271. (07:45:21 AM) lattsam: A cakewalk compared to the last one!
  272. (07:45:23 AM) Fireflower: will there be cake?
  273. (07:45:26 AM) ReverendGumby: haha
  274. (07:45:30 AM) nicholasdelucca: Of course
  275. (07:45:32 AM) Cheeseness: With the way the game has been paced, this would have been a satisfying ending
  276. (07:45:42 AM) Cheeseness: (chamber 19)
  277. (07:45:45 AM) lattsam: Fireflower there better be
  278. (07:45:47 AM) nicholasdelucca: GLaDOS promised it, and GLaDOS never lies :D
  279. (07:45:51 AM) Fireflower: nice
  280. (07:46:22 AM) ReverendGumby: Cake!
  281. (07:46:24 AM) nicholasdelucca: Here we go
  282. (07:46:26 AM) lattsam: it better be as good as on the icon
  283. (07:46:29 AM) ReverendGumby: There's the oven.
  284. (07:46:41 AM) nicholasdelucca: I think it's still baking
  285. (07:46:42 AM) ArchStanton: is this almost the end?
  286. (07:46:43 AM) Fireflower: are they making the cake in there?
  287. (07:46:47 AM) nicholasdelucca: It's ok I can wait
  288. (07:46:58 AM) lattsam: Well, GLaDOS wants to bake SOMETHING
  289. (07:46:59 AM) nicholasdelucca: ArchStanton: yep
  290. (07:47:18 AM) nicholasdelucca: I love this line
  291. (07:47:24 AM) hng left the room (quit: Quit: cake).
  292. (07:47:26 AM) ArchStanton: holy carp
  293. (07:47:27 AM) Cheeseness: First time I played this, I was all "This was a good game.. wait, there's more??"
  294. (07:47:27 AM) ReverendGumby: Please assume the party submission position.
  295. (07:47:29 AM) Cheeseness: My mind was blone
  296. (07:47:31 AM) Cheeseness: blown
  297. (07:47:55 AM) ArchStanton: what the party escort submission position?
  298. (07:48:10 AM) ReverendGumby: This is the point where I couldn't possibly stop.
  299. (07:48:19 AM) ArchStanton: i think 'blone' is correct
  300. (07:48:46 AM) Fireflower: where's the party?
  301. (07:48:52 AM) anagromataf: I had to play portal 1 and portal 2 in one sitting
  302. (07:49:00 AM) lattsam: I think there used to be a lot of people here... I wonder what happened to them all
  303. (07:49:06 AM) ReverendGumby: Where's everyone?
  304. (07:49:18 AM) GameClubFan_744557 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  305. (07:49:47 AM) nicholasdelucca: don't go GameClubFan_744557!
  306. (07:49:57 AM) lattsam: WHEEEEEE!
  307. (07:50:05 AM) ArchStanton: this game has physical speakers everywhere the voice talks to you.
  308. (07:50:09 AM) nicholasdelucca: We promise to teach you how to change your username
  309. (07:50:10 AM) lattsam: Oops, you bwoke it
  310. (07:50:11 AM) ReverendGumby: Feeling all Cloud Cityish
  311. (07:50:22 AM) ArchStanton: now we need a game that has music speakers everywhere there's music
  312. (07:50:30 AM) Cheeseness: Bringing players back to the "broken" test to allow them to feel powerful by solving it with both portals was a great move
  313. (07:52:20 AM) nicholasdelucca: The fact tht GLaDOS is still trying to convince you to stop makes it all the better
  314. (07:52:24 AM) nicholasdelucca: *that
  315. (07:53:27 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah. Her desperation really helps you feel like you've broken free and are where you shouldn't be
  316. (07:53:52 AM) ReverendGumby: This room made me go, "Why? What's the point of all of the smashers! WHY!"
  317. (07:54:04 AM) ArchStanton: how do they handle death? i forget
  318. (07:54:08 AM) lattsam: There are a lot of them aren't there?
  319. (07:55:02 AM) Mimness [76d0c4b9@hide-B64552F4.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  320. (07:55:14 AM) ReverendGumby: Hi Mimness
  321. (07:55:28 AM) nicholasdelucca: You drop the Portal gun and falls, just like in HL (except for the Portal gun)
  322. (07:55:31 AM) Mimness: Morning/Evening everyone ^_^
  323. (07:55:37 AM) Cheeseness: ArchStanton: You just respawn near the beginning of the chamber
  324. (07:55:39 AM) nicholasdelucca: HL2
  325. (07:55:43 AM) Cheeseness: (or checkpoint in this section of the game)
  326. (07:56:20 AM) nicholasdelucca: Mimness Evening ^_^
  327. (07:56:39 AM) lattsam: That explains why GLaDOS got up here, then!
  328. (07:57:06 AM) lattsam: "Are you still there?" Heh, I always like that line
  329. (07:57:24 AM) Cheeseness: That turret is a little different
  330. (07:57:50 AM) lattsam: Portal 2 also has a turret who's "different"
  331. (07:58:03 AM) ReverendGumby: Put you down? "You're small and can't see behind you."
  332. (07:58:07 AM) nicholasdelucca: We're different!
  333. (07:58:25 AM) lattsam: She probably ate it
  334. (07:58:38 AM) Fireflower: :)
  335. (07:58:40 AM) Cheeseness: Ooh, Portal's first 'active' enemy
  336. (07:58:41 AM) ReverendGumby: Back to the tutorial.
  337. (07:58:44 AM) lattsam: Whoa!
  338. (07:59:10 AM) lattsam: Ready... aim...
  339. (07:59:25 AM) lattsam: FIRE!
  340. (08:00:39 AM) nicholasdelucca: Oh this part...
  341. (08:00:44 AM) ArchStanton left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  342. (08:00:56 AM) Cheeseness: Although the rocket turrets are slow enough that it's hard to really feel that they actively pursue you since they're also fixed to the floor
  343. (08:01:13 AM) lattsam: They're still cute though
  344. (08:01:28 AM) lattsam: And they don't hate you
  345. (08:01:31 AM) Cheeseness: All of Portal's other enemies are passive - you move into their range
  346. (08:01:31 AM) nicholasdelucca: I feel like they don't want to hurt us, but are forced to
  347. (08:01:41 AM) Cheeseness: Which makes them more like puzzle elements than combat challenges
  348. (08:03:04 AM) ReverendGumby: It's such a minimalist game in terms of controls. No health bar, no inventory..
  349. (08:03:16 AM) ReverendGumby: No HUD...
  350. (08:03:18 AM) nicholasdelucca: Just fun :D
  351. (08:03:27 AM) lattsam: But it's a game you'll remember for the rest of your life
  352. (08:03:39 AM) ReverendGumby: One graticle.
  353. (08:03:49 AM) Fireflower: a Portal adventure game would be cool, with a massive inventory
  354. (08:03:50 AM) ReverendGumby: And a mad supercomputer.
  355. (08:03:55 AM) nicholasdelucca: Here we go
  356. (08:04:14 AM) lattsam: GLaDOS vs. Chell... place all bets
  357. (08:04:31 AM) Fireflower: deploying cake?
  358. (08:04:34 AM) Cheeseness: heh
  359. (08:04:42 AM) lattsam: as if
  360. (08:04:43 AM) Cheeseness: This is a wonderful crescendo
  361. (08:04:59 AM) Cheeseness: All of the mechanics have already been introduced
  362. (08:05:00 AM) lattsam: YES
  363. (08:05:02 AM) ReverendGumby: What's that? Ooh, what's that?
  364. (08:05:09 AM) lattsam: That thing has numbers on it!
  365. (08:06:11 AM) lattsam: Nice job breaking it, hero
  366. (08:06:14 AM) Cheeseness: The only different element here is the neurotoxin time limit, which is so long that it doesn't really mean much, but it really creates an entirely different feel and makes players feel creative by using the stuff they've already used in a slightly different context
  367. (08:06:17 AM) nicholasdelucca: I was seriously scared when she started speaking like that
  368. (08:06:38 AM) lattsam: The final battles of Portal 2 have time limits too
  369. Syd Syd_laptop
  370. (08:06:39 AM) Cheeseness: cliumb up on the platform and take a look at GLaDOS, Syd
  371. (08:06:58 AM) nicholasdelucca: You know, for sciene!
  372. (08:07:01 AM) nicholasdelucca: *science
  373. (08:07:08 AM) lattsam: Because Chell will be the last thing she sees
  374. (08:07:30 AM) lattsam: That thing has numbers on it! Great line
  375. (08:07:39 AM) Mimness: It's a Pinky Pie core...
  376. (08:07:52 AM) Cheeseness: What's wrong with your legs? D:
  377. (08:08:05 AM) ReverendGumby: Do you smell something burning?
  378. (08:08:48 AM) ReverendGumby: The cube is a "he".
  379. (08:08:58 AM) Cheeseness: Oh, I forgot about that!
  380. (08:09:14 AM) lattsam: The only character in the game NOT voiced by Ellen
  381. (08:09:16 AM) ReverendGumby: I'd not have noticed had you not pointed out the gender bias.
  382. (08:09:17 AM) Mimness: According to GLaDOS, who tells fibs.
  383. (08:09:26 AM) ReverendGumby: Neato.
  384. (08:09:44 AM) lattsam: Write this recipe down!
  385. (08:09:55 AM) Cheeseness: I don't think she did the aggression core
  386. (08:10:08 AM) ReverendGumby: I like fish.
  387. (08:10:13 AM) lattsam: Sediment-shaped sediment... heh
  388. (08:10:40 AM) ReverendGumby: Oh, that's funny!
  389. (08:10:41 AM) lattsam: Bai
  390. (08:11:14 AM) ReverendGumby: Oh, she's a squirming stinker
  391. (08:11:21 AM) lattsam: Neither does she
  392. (08:11:32 AM) nicholasdelucca: GO GO GO!
  393. (08:11:36 AM) Fireflower: growl
  394. (08:11:44 AM) lattsam: Oh wait, THERE'S the only character not voiced by Ellen
  395. (08:11:55 AM) lattsam: And you... are... outta here!
  396. (08:11:56 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah
  397. (08:12:00 AM) lattsam: YAY
  398. (08:12:03 AM) nicholasdelucca: The Half-Life reference...
  399. (08:12:22 AM) Cheeseness: nicholasdelucca: Did you see Black Mesa mentioned on the slides in the boardroom earlier?
  400. (08:12:26 AM) GameClubFan_581681 [b01b085a@hide-50D287EE.mibbit.com] entered the room.
  401. (08:12:29 AM) lattsam: Yeah, I did
  402. (08:12:30 AM) nicholasdelucca: Yes
  403. (08:12:36 AM) nicholasdelucca: In the TVs too
  404. (08:12:40 AM) Mimness: Oh how we laughed and laughed
  405. (08:12:47 AM) Cheeseness: So originally, there was no party escourt submission bot
  406. (08:12:51 AM) Cheeseness: It just faded out here
  407. (08:12:56 AM) nicholasdelucca: It's always such a pleasure
  408. (08:13:00 AM) GameClubFan_581681: just got in from work. sad timing
  409. (08:13:00 AM) anagromataf: epic credits incoming
  410. (08:13:15 AM) ReverendGumby: But first, let there be cake
  411. (08:13:17 AM) Cheeseness: GameClubFan_581681: Aww. There'll be a chat archive and video stream up in the forum soon :)
  412. (08:13:30 AM) nicholasdelucca: GameClubFan_581681 don't wory, you can still watch (and sing-along) Still Alive!
  413. (08:13:42 AM) Fireflower: cake!
  414. (08:13:52 AM) nicholasdelucca: Here we go!
  415. (08:13:57 AM) nicholasdelucca: Are you ready?
  416. (08:13:59 AM) lattsam: Good thing GLaDOS saved me a slice
  417. (08:14:00 AM) ReverendGumby: Yes, I bought this when it was released on Rock Band.
  418. (08:14:04 AM) nicholasdelucca: This was a triumph
  419. (08:14:05 AM) GameClubFan_581681: True true. This was a triumph
  420. (08:14:12 AM) lattsam: This was a triumph indeed
  421. (08:14:19 AM) Cheeseness: I consider this to possibly be the most perfect game ever made
  422. (08:14:23 AM) ReverendGumby: Well done to get it all in one stream.
  423. (08:14:36 AM) lattsam: You should stream Portal 2 one day
  424. (08:14:44 AM) Cheeseness: I reckon it'll take more than one day ;)
  425. (08:14:47 AM) Cheeseness: But I'm sure we will :D
  426. (08:14:58 AM) nicholasdelucca: It would take a little bit longer ;)
  427. (08:15:13 AM) nicholasdelucca: Man, I love this game
  428. (08:15:38 AM) Fireflower: nice song :)
  429. (08:15:42 AM) nicholasdelucca: Still Alive
  430. (08:15:43 AM) Cheeseness: Portal 2 was good. Probably as good as HL2, but Portal 1 is special
  431. (08:15:57 AM) ReverendGumby: Jonathon Coulton composed this, I believe.
  432. (08:15:59 AM) nicholasdelucca: fireflower you never played it?!?!?!
  433. (08:16:00 AM) Cheeseness: Yep
  434. (08:16:04 AM) GameClubFan_581681: Speed runs of this game still amaze me. Like 50 minutes is my best lol
  435. (08:16:05 AM) lattsam: Another Black Mesa ref
  436. (08:16:11 AM) Fireflower: nope, haven't played it
  437. (08:16:20 AM) Cheeseness: Aww, do you think you might now?
  438. (08:16:21 AM) Fireflower: tried a demo once but got bored :)
  439. (08:16:22 AM) ReverendGumby: Ding!
  440. (08:16:24 AM) Cheeseness: Aww
  441. (08:17:06 AM) nicholasdelucca: I'm kinda sorry you had to watch it to be interested :(
  442. (08:17:06 AM) Cheeseness: Yay, cake!
  443. (08:17:11 AM) nicholasdelucca: That''s it"
  444. (08:17:11 AM) ReverendGumby: Caaaaaaaaaake!
  445. (08:17:12 AM) lattsam: But at least we got cake
  446. (08:17:22 AM) lattsam: Quit now and cake will be served immediately
  447. (08:17:29 AM) Cheeseness: Thanks Syd!
  448. (08:17:39 AM) Fireflower: thank you Syd
  449. (08:17:40 AM) ReverendGumby: Thank you, Syd!
  450. (08:17:47 AM) Mimness: Assume the party escort submission position, everyone
  451. (08:17:49 AM) Syd: I now know I should lower my streaming settings a bit when I stream 3D stuff. I was getting lots of dropped frames
  452. (08:17:56 AM) nicholasdelucca: Thanks, Syd! You can have cake now.
  453. (08:17:57 AM) Cheeseness: I'm feeling slightly inspired to finish writing my article on gender representation in Portal
  454. (08:18:01 AM) Syd: lol. :)
  455. (08:18:07 AM) Mimness: Syd is awesome.
  456. (08:18:11 AM) Cheeseness: Syd is the best
  457. (08:18:23 AM) anagromataf left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  458. (08:18:24 AM) nicholasdelucca: Do it Cheeseness! For science ;)
  459. (08:18:24 AM) Mimness: Syd is fantastic
  460. (08:18:25 AM) ReverendGumby: Syd, never mind the dropped frames, it was still very fun.
  461. (08:19:00 AM) Syd: Still had it on very high quality, which was mostly to make sure that very subtitle-dependent games like BTDT/TGP came through clearly.
  462. (08:19:02 AM) ReverendGumby: For anthropological science.
  463. (08:19:04 AM) nicholasdelucca: Oh and of course, thanks for all of you who were active on the chat. It made even more special
  464. (08:19:11 AM) Cheeseness: For anybody who's interested, Mimness and I did a whole bunch of Portal fan art in the leadup to the release of Portal 2
  465. (08:19:18 AM) GameClubFan_581681 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  466. (08:19:34 AM) ReverendGumby: Now I want to play thru Portal 2 again.
  467. (08:19:54 AM) Cheeseness: Mimness voiced this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQnKYu1C_VQ
  468. (08:19:58 AM) nicholasdelucca: ReverendGumby Me too :P
  469. (08:20:09 AM) nicholasdelucca: REALLY!?
  470. (08:20:18 AM) nicholasdelucca: I already watched that video and LOVED IT
  471. (08:20:21 AM) Cheeseness: I did the art, and we wrote the lyrics together :D
  472. (08:20:27 AM) nicholasdelucca: Thanks Mimness!
  473. (08:20:38 AM) lattsam: How festive! :3
  474. (08:20:38 AM) nicholasdelucca: You guys rock :)
  475. (08:20:39 AM) Mimness: Aww shucks! Thanks nicholasdelucca
  476. (08:20:52 AM) Fireflower: nice Mim :)
  477. (08:20:54 AM) Cheeseness: We did one piece of fan art a day in the month leading up to the release of Portal 2 :D
  478. (08:20:59 AM) Syd: I somehow ran through that quicker for this stream than my test runthrough during the week, even though I made more mistakes and dawdled around more during the final confrontation. Oh well!
  479. (08:21:09 AM) lattsam: Five [ITEM NAME HERE]
  480. (08:21:22 AM) nicholasdelucca: You're welcome Mimness
  481. (08:22:06 AM) lattsam: They don't hate you either
  482. (08:22:33 AM) Cheeseness: People really love this one too ^_^ http://twolofbees.com/artwork.php?iid=585

  484. (08:22:50 AM) Mimness: Shameless plugging of our stuff, Cheeseness
  485. (08:22:53 AM) Syd: It was totally unintentional, but I think I defeated GLaDOS during one of the best lines she could have been saying for that moment, warning Chell about how dangerous it is outside as she's being destroyed.
  486. (08:23:06 AM) Cheeseness: Yeah, I know. You cut off a few of her lines >_<
  487. (08:23:15 AM) Cheeseness: But anybody who wants to hear more should play through again themselves :3
  488. (08:23:21 AM) ReverendGumby: Syd, thanks for having the subtitles up.
  489. (08:23:26 AM) Syd: I tried to get as many lines in as I could, but yeah, some of it was unintentional
