  1. Joe Copp might you guys look at this? Call_of_Duty_Wiki_talk:News_Team#Weekly_news_blog_issue
  2. 11:45 Damac1214 Joe: Weekly news blogs are almost meant to be the way they are. They aren't serious news we are bringing to the community, they are fun weekly round ups and the users writing them are allowed to put whatever twists they would like in them. While things such as the links to other news blogs and opinion blogs should probably have longer descriptions then just "Opinions" and "News" (i.e: "Call of Duty 11 announced" as opposed to "lol news") I feel the rest should be left up to the discretion of the user making the blog
  3. Sactage has left the chat.
  4. 11:46 Joe Copp i did kinda hit the personalization thing, but i still think they should be more friendly to new users
  5. especially when those are like the first blogs you see on the main page
  6. 11:46 KATANAGOD we don't even know how new users react to said blogs
  7. I think its a going out on a limb to say they're unwelcoming
  8. 11:47 Damac1214 I don't really see how they aren't. A joke picture of the Walking Dead isn't likely to alienate users, neither is bad grammar.
  9. And a couple in-jokes shouldn't be frowned upon. New Users either wont notice them, or will learn them soon enough
  10. 11:48 Joe Copp "soon enough" isn't relevant if the users don't stay, which stats tell us is most of the time the case
  11. 11:48 Damac1214 That's probably barely related to the Weekly Blogs though
  12. 11:48 KATANAGOD where are you getting your stats
  13. 11:48 Joe Copp but what i'm getting at is the amount of "in-jokes" is shaking the balance of relevant information
  14. 11:49 KATANAGOD we don't have stats that tell us after a new user looks at a news blog they leave the wiki
  15. 11:49 Joe Copp kat: it's been long known that most of the wiki's traffic comes from just viewers
  16. Sgt D Grif has joined the chat.
  17. 11:49 Joe Copp less than 50% of people who come here stay and edit. that's what i'm saying
  18. 11:49 Damac1214 Weekly Blogs aren't information sources though
  19. 11:50 Joe Copp they are in that they're portals to such information, though
  20. 11:50 Sgt D Grif Whoops serious convo, *scoots to the side*
  21. 11:50 KATANAGOD uh
  22. what does that have to do with news blogs?
  23. I don't see the connection
  24. 11:51 Joe Copp kat: if people look at news blogs that aren't here to stay, doesn't that mean they're less likely to understand why the blogs have so many inside jokes/purposeful grammatical errors?
  25. 11:52 Damac1214 I'd put money on the idea that less than 5% of people choose not to edit based on weekly news blogs
  26. 11:52 KATANAGOD what
  27. 11:52 Joe Copp and since you could probably guess that most of the people who see the blogs are new users, based on that stat i cited, that would mean that most people looking at the blogs don't understand the jokes.
  28. 11:52 KATANAGOD news blogs that aren't here to stay what
  29. or don't care about the blogs and come to the wiki for the actual content we have
  30. 11:53 Joe Copp damac: i'm not suggesting news blogs are the sole reason people don't stay and edit
  31. 11:53 KATANAGOD I don't think news blogs are our main attraction either
  32. 11:53 Joe Copp i don't think so either
  33. but the fact that their weekly, and on the main page, means they get at least a decent amount of traffic, no?
  34. 11:53 KATANAGOD Then I don't see the issue with a few silly jokes on a /community/ blog
  35. 11:54 Damac1214 Community Blogs tend to get less views as well
  36. 11:54 KATANAGOD yep
  37. less comments too
  38. 11:54 Damac1214 Try having an imgur link on a Game News Blog and a Weekly News Blog to track views
  39. 9/10 times, the weekly news blog version of the pic will have less views
  40. 11:55 Joe Copp my argument could be summed up in to phrases "I do understand that putting some pizzaz into the weekly news blogs keeps them fun for the users that are here for all of them, and I'm not saying we can't do that", and "A little professionalism won't kill anybody."
  41. 11:55 Damac1214 * Damac1214 isn't aware if there is a way to view page counts on wiki
  42. 11:55 Joe Copp *two
  43. do you guys at least see where i'm coming from?
  44. 11:56 Damac1214 I see where you're coming from, yes
  45. I just don't agree with it
  46. 11:57 Joe Copp like i said, it's just that the amount of broken english and unrelated content has become ridiculous
  47. 11:58 Damac1214 >Unrelated Content
  48. You mean the World News section? Which is literally meant to be unrelated and has been around for ages?
  49. 11:58 Joe Copp ^ weekly image
  50. 11:58 Damac1214 Or the .gif/pic of the weeks which are just meant for fun
  51. Endgam3r has joined the chat.
  52. Endgam3r has left the chat.
  53. 12:00 Damac1214 Weekly News blogs are just community updates, so they essentially follow the same golden rule as chat does. Yes, it is being hosted on Call of Duty Wiki and yes it does talk about Call of Duty to a degree, but no it does not have to be 100% about call of duty 100% of the time
  54. 12:00 Joe Copp and i never suggested it had to
  55. again, "A little professionalism won't kill anybody"
  56. 12:01 Damac1214 "unrelated content has become ridiculous" Suggests exactly what I pointed out
  57. Mabe not as extremely, but still
  58. *Maybe
  59. 12:01 Joe Copp "unrelated" may not have been the best word, but i was referring to things like the weekly image, etc
  60. 12:02 Damac1214 Which is, once again, just there for fun
  61. 12:02 Joe Copp i think you agreed with me on the point of "opinion" being a little brief of a link summary, which on the most basic level is what i'm getting at
  62. understand that it is the culmination of all of these little things that overall present the blog as a bit shifty
  63. but really i must be getting to bed
  64. 12:03 KATANAGOD a gif I used on a news blog only got 1,002 views
  65. 12:03 Joe Copp please post on the talk page if you think of anything else
  66. bye
  67. 12:04 Damac1214 But even on the blog you use as an example, Redskins current one, the only bit that is unprofessional is that bit
  68. 12:04 KATANAGOD 1,002 our of 2 million
  69. 12:04 Damac1214 Night
  70. 12:04 KATANAGOD out
