The RWBY Recap

A long time ago, humanity was on the brink of extinction by shadow animals known as the Grimm.  Only with the miraculous discovery of Dust could man turn the tables on Grimm.  From there, new prosperous cities were born.

Our story begins with a young girl named Ruby Rose trying to stop a Dust robbery.  She pursues a terrorist group known as the White Fang, led by resident crimelord and ham Roman Torchwick.  He tries to make an escape by helicopter, but a huntress known as Glynda Goodwitch comes out of nowhere and starts throwing magic pebbles at it.  White Fang's true leader, Cinder Fall, distracts her and Ruby long enough for the terrorists to escape.

Instead of reporting Ruby to the authorities like Glynda suggests, Headmaster Ozpin decides to enroll Ruby into the prestigious Beacon Academy on the spot.  Ruby meets some old and new faces at Beacon:

-Yang Xiao Long, her sister
-Weiss Schnee, the stereotypical mean rich girl
-Blake Belladonna, the quiet one
-Jaune Arc, chief of comic relief and self-insert
-Nora Valkyrie, borderline stalker
-Pyrrha Nikos, with no real flaws
-Lie Ren…um, the other quiet one
-Cardin Winchester, school bully

All of these students later gear up for the Chunin Exam, in which each student gets thrown into the woods, no questions asked.  A bunch of Grimm start showing up, but our heroes make it out just fine.  They pass, and shortly after Ozpin organizes them into teams:

RWBY (Ruby): Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang
JNPR (Juniper): Jaune, Nora, Pyrrha and Ren
CRDL (Cardinal): Cardin Winchester and three other guys

We are also introduced to the Faunus, who are basically humans with typical "furry animal" appendages and heightened senses.  They're discriminated against because.

Cardin starts to bully Velvet Scarletina, a Faunus.  Jaune stands up to him, which makes him become the victim instead.  Cardin threatens to reveal Ozpin that Jaune snuck into Beacon instead of earning enrollment.  A day later, our heroes are instructed to collect sap from trees.  Cardin tries to convince Jaune to throw one at Pyrrha, but of course Jaune throws it at Cardin instead.  Suddenly a Grimm attacks.  Jaune manages to protect Cardin and kill it.

Sometime later, Weiss spontaneously starts to insult the Faunus.  Blake reveals that she was a Faunus all along, throws a tantrum and runs away.  She meets up with an old friend, Sun Wukong, along the way.  Suddenly, White Fang start to rob the Schnee Dust Company.  Blake and Sun try to stop them, but their efforts are fruitless.  A robot named Penny, who is kept by Ozpin, shows up to save the day.  Weiss learns not to be racist and Blake learns not to throw a tantrum.

Other characters:
Mr. Port, a professor at Beacon who teaches about Grimm.  Competes at being a larger ham than Roman.
Mr. Oobleck, a professor at Beacon who teaches about Faunus.  Very hyper.
Russel Thrush, Dove Bronzewing and Sky Lark are filler characters with no personality.
Mercury and Emerald are Cinder's henchmen shown at the last second.

Ursa: Bear

Nevermore: Giant bird
King Taijitu: Siamese twin snake

-Semblance
Each student at Beacon has a hidden power known as their Semblance.
-Ruby: Gotta go fast
-Weiss: Ice/Glyphs
-Blake: Double Team
-Yang: Fire
-Jaune: Healing himself
-Nora: Unknown
-Pyrrha: Magnetism
-Ren: Life force attacks

-Aura
Each human and Faunus' life force, which fuels Semblances.

-Weapons
-Ruby has a giant scythe known as the Crescent Rose.
-Weiss has a rapier known as the Myrenaster.
-Blake has a chain...sword...boomerang thing known as the Gambol Shroud.
-Yang has gauntlets known as Ember Cecelia.
-Jaune's sword is known as Crocea Mors.
-Nora has a hammer known as Manghild.
-Pyrrha has a javelin and shield.  They are Milo and Akouo, respectively.
-Ren has twin pistols known as the Storm Flower.

Every weapon is a gun of some sort, except Crocea Mors.  Manghild is a grenade launcher.  The Storm Flower doubles as daggers.
