  1. (06:56:33) PONTO: Who will be here? I mean, from Double Fine
  2. (06:56:36) Fhqwhgod: Ohai chat!
  3. (06:56:51) Tinche: \o
  4. (06:57:05) TimeGentleman: PONTO looking like no one this week
  5. (06:57:07) Syd: Greg was all intent on us starting Grim today, and then it turned out that basically everyone that worked on the game is booked this weekend. :(
  6. (06:57:09) Cheeseness: PONTO: We weren't able to confirm any guests for today's session (seems the beginning of the month is a busy time for most people)
  7. (06:57:25) Syd: We may get a surprise guest but we've at least got people set for future sessions
  8. (06:57:36) PONTO: aw... And who's playing?
  9. (06:57:41) Syd: I'll be streaming
  10. (06:57:44) Cheeseness: Syd's streaming today
  11. (06:57:47) Tinche: hard at work on finishing up broken age? :D
  12. (06:58:24) TimeGentleman: it's a shame as I probably won't be able to make next week
  13. (06:58:30) Cheeseness: Darn
  14. (06:58:40) Syd: We have two other sessions after that, at least
  15. (06:58:46) Syd: We're streaming one year per session
  16. (06:59:28) TimeGentleman: Yeah, hopefully I'll be able to make those, but Sat nights are tough for me!
  17. (06:59:44) Cheeseness: Just got word from Brandon who says he might be able to drop in today, but no promises (he was lead programmer on the remastered edition)
  18. (06:59:51) Syd: Nice
  19. (06:59:53) Syd: Hope he can make it
  20. (07:00:10) TimeGentleman: sweet, fingers crossed :)
  21. (07:00:13) Fhqwhgod: I just finished the Remaster today
  22. (07:00:14) Syd: I'll be starting the stream in about a minute
  23. (07:00:19) Fhqwhgod: 15€ well spent
  24. (07:00:38) Cheeseness: He says he's busy for next weekend, but should be right for the one after that
  25. (07:00:38) Sven_Q45 [Mibbit@hide-7E0ABB16.dip0.t-ipconnect.de] entered the room.
  26. (07:00:48) Cheeseness: Syd: Can you update the stream title and stuff as well?
  27. (07:00:56) Syd: I thought I already did that
  28. (07:01:08) Syd: But let me check it
  29. (07:01:22) GameClubFan_322849 [Mibbit@63F21597.C668C3E9.37DB8DB6.IP] entered the room.
  30. (07:01:28) Cheeseness: Ah, cool cool :)
  31. (07:01:40) Syd: Yeah, it should be set
  32. (07:01:43) Syd: Hey Sven_Q45
  33. (07:02:03) Syd: Alright, let's get this rolling. Let me know when we're live.
  34. (07:02:42) Fhqwhgod: live
  35. (07:02:49) flesk: Hi there.
  36. (07:02:53) TimeGentleman: advert!
  37. (07:03:01) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: That's why we do the intros :D
  38. (07:03:07) Sven_Q45: I can´t wait. A little "round" GF could cheer me up. :s
  39. (07:03:09) GameClubFan_322849 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  40. (07:03:36) TimeGentleman: I don't love the Australian voice they put at the start of this edition
  41. (07:03:41) TimeGentleman: weird choice
  42. (07:03:46) Tinche: :D
  43. (07:04:02) TimeGentleman: oh noes Syd has the borders on!
  44. (07:04:05) Fhqwhgod: oh. I even get to see the borders here
  45. (07:04:08) Fhqwhgod: nice
  46. (07:04:18) liorean [liorean@hide-37944BFF.cust.bredband2.com] entered the room.
  47. (07:04:19) Syd: I like the borders. :P
  48. (07:04:24) Fhqwhgod: I don't have those on my screen
  49. (07:04:36) Tinche: the borders change based on the year :D
  50. (07:04:39) Sven_Q45: australian voice?
  51. (07:04:49) Fhqwhgod: the cheese-voice
  52. (07:04:51) TimeGentleman: So is this the Melbourne Orchestra we're hearing?
  53. (07:04:51) Tinche: he was mocking Cheese's intro :p
  54. (07:04:57) Wildax [Mibbit@hide-27D9544C.retail.telecomitalia.it] entered the room.
  55. (07:05:08) Cheeseness: Ha ha
  56. (07:05:18) Cheeseness: Oh! Lee says he's going to try to join us in a bit
  57. (07:05:25) Syd: Nice!
  58. (07:05:31) liorean: Nice
  59. (07:05:33) Tinche: I have to question the practicality of round monitors
  60. (07:05:36) TimeGentleman: Nice
  61. (07:05:40) Sven_Q45: I knew about Cheeseness. But I thought it´s something new in the game. :D
  62. (07:05:52) Syd: Hopefully Oliver can join one of the session so I can personally thank him for putting in my little suggestion. :P
  63. (07:05:57) Syd: (assuming he did it)
  64. (07:06:06) TimeGentleman: what was the suggestion Syd?
  65. (07:06:24) Syd: Originally, the game paused when it lost focused. I asked for that to be changed so I could chat without the game pausing
  66. (07:06:36) Syd: And that's the reason I can chat now. :P
  67. (07:06:42) TimeGentleman: yay!
  68. (07:06:46) Fhqwhgod: the game looks so much better on the small stream window
  69. (07:07:03) Meeps [Mibbit@hide-54122C0D.nj.res.rr.com] entered the room.
  70. (07:07:13) Cheeseness: Hey Meeps!
  71. (07:07:17) Sven_Q45: I don´t like the beams-.
  72. (07:07:19) Meeps: hey! :D
  73. (07:07:26) PONTO: It's a pity that the chat is not displayed to the side, but rather below the stream window... :P
  74. (07:07:28) Cheeseness: I love how well hidden the intersecting planes technique on the fingers are
  75. (07:07:28) TimeGentleman: that transition was a little bumpy - perhaps to do with the point and click?
  76. (07:07:44) Cheeseness: It feels much more obvious in the original even at low res
  77. (07:07:45) TimeGentleman: PONTO I have it in a different window and then arrange accordingly
  78. (07:07:46) PONTO: I have to set the browser to fullscreen x)
  79. (07:07:54) Meeps: dang, what is this pointing and clicking business?
  80. (07:07:59) Cheeseness: heh
  81. (07:08:07) Cheeseness: If *I* was streaming, it'd be tank controls all the way
  82. (07:08:07) Tinche: blasphemy, that's what it is
  83. (07:08:18) Tinche: I hope Tim doesn't see this
  84. (07:08:26) Syd: You guys don't want to watch me running into walls. :P
  85. (07:08:33) GameClubFan_256651 [Mibbit@hide-D4EFA447.adsl.green.ch] entered the room.
  86. (07:08:38) Fhqwhgod: I unplugged my mouse for the game
  87. (07:08:40) liorean: I always use the twitch.tv/dfgameclub/popout address and run chat in a separate window
  88. (07:08:43) GameClubFan_878126 [Mibbit@63F21597.C668C3E9.37DB8DB6.IP] entered the room.
  89. (07:08:44) Sven_Q45: Yes it´s painfull. :D
  90. (07:08:47) Cheeseness: I feel like they've done something to tune up the tank controls a little. I feel like I bounce around a lot less than I used to
  91. (07:09:07) PONTO: In the changelog they mention adding a deadzone
  92. (07:09:08) Fhqwhgod: I still bounced a bunch
  93. (07:09:10) kittenm4ster [Mibbit@hide-B3B6CBA2.hsd1.or.comcast.net] entered the room.
  94. (07:09:11) PONTO: I think that's what it is about
  95. (07:09:13) flesk: I didn't get caught in any corners when playing the remaster either.
  96. (07:09:14) TimeGentleman: Gah, that warning!
  97. (07:09:16) Sven_Q45: Later on I´ll play it with the new mouse controls. Love that.
  98. (07:09:17) Fhqwhgod: esp. year 2 onward
  99. (07:09:18) PONTO: But I always played with direct controls
  100. (07:09:20) Cheeseness: Hi kittenm4ster
  101. (07:09:27) flesk: So either I got better at tank controls or they improved them.
  102. (07:09:53) liorean: I actually liked the tank controls
  103. (07:10:03) GameClubFan_256651 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  104. (07:10:03) Cheeseness: Same here
  105. (07:10:07) Cheeseness: The mouse controls have helped me spot things that I don't think I'd found before, though
  106. (07:10:07) TimeGentleman: flesk yeah didn't TIm say in one of the vids about them trying to improve that stuff?
  107. (07:10:09) GameClubFan_878126 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  108. (07:10:20) jdw [Mibbit@hide-F17FFB3B.plus.com] entered the room.
  109. (07:10:33) Cheeseness: Being able to scan the scene without taking the time to run around it makes discovering stuff a bunch easier
  110. (07:10:36) FurretTurret [Mibbit@86B2E757.2494945.C8A13F6C.IP] entered the room.
  111. (07:10:42) Cheeseness: Hi jdw, FurretTurret
  112. (07:10:54) FurretTurret: hi!
  113. (07:11:00) Tinche: hm were Manny and Eva a couple once?
  114. (07:11:04) Tinche: or just old friends
  115. (07:11:05) liorean: There are a few areas where I needed to use mouse though. The first of which is that tank controls had a invisible wall preventing reentering this house, so using the mouse got you up the stairs
  116. (07:11:06) flesk: TimeGentleman: Yeah, I think someone said something about that. Don't know if it was confirmed to have been implemented though.
  117. (07:11:06) TimeGentleman: Are the dialogue choices in a different colour to the original? I remember them being the same yellow as the menus
  118. (07:11:12) jmlane [Mibbit@hide-D6EA001.eastlink.ca] entered the room.
  119. (07:11:13) Cheeseness: I think they've just been there for a long time
  120. (07:11:17) Cheeseness: At the DoD
  121. (07:11:22) Cheeseness: Hi jmlane
  122. (07:11:42) Tinche: yeah probably just comrades in arms for a long time
  123. (07:12:02) GameClubFan_741429 [Mibbit@63F21597.C668C3E9.37DB8DB6.IP] entered the room.
  124. (07:12:10) Jenni [Mibbit@hide-C1453BD0.stny.res.rr.com] entered the room.
  125. (07:12:18) Sven_Q45: Yes the dialogue choises are diffeent.
  126. (07:12:20) somaen [Mibbit@hide-EADDC686.studby.ntnu.no] entered the room.
  127. (07:12:24) Sven_Q45: Hi jenni.
  128. (07:12:30) Jenni: Hi :D
  129. (07:12:35) kittenm4ster: Oh hi Cheeseness :)
  130. (07:12:38) Tinche: hehe, "fat days"
  131. (07:12:40) Sven_Q45: Did you play Randals Monday now Jenni?
  132. (07:12:43) Fhqwhgod: achievement get
  133. (07:12:49) flesk: I had a weird path finding glitch outside the DoD. Wasn't able to reproduce it though.
  134. (07:12:51) Jenni: not yet
  135. (07:12:52) Cheeseness: Hey Jenni
  136. (07:13:05) Sven_Q45: Jenni. shame. :D
  137. (07:13:10) Cheeseness: The characterisation in this game is so good. The foreshadowing here when Manny tells Eva that he knows she works for another man is great, and then the conscious writing effort to ensure that the relationship stays "normal" is fantastic and makes it all feel more believable
  138. (07:13:25) Cheeseness: Syd: Ooh, try to pick up the hole punch
  139. (07:13:29) Cheeseness: It's one of my favourite Eva lines
  140. (07:13:37) PONTO: Try to pick the hole punch!
  141. (07:13:40) Syd: I'll do that when I go back up there
  142. (07:13:42) PONTO: Pick it up! :D
  143. (07:13:43) kittenm4ster: Eva is a great character
  144. (07:13:49) PONTO: ok :)
  145. (07:13:51) kisak [~kisak@hide-B2D555B5.hrbgpa.fios.verizon.net] entered the room.
  146. (07:13:53) Syd: It's too late now! Stream lag! :P
  147. (07:13:58) somaen: I always wondered how the garage glitch works
  148. (07:13:59) TimeGentleman: you have to give Syd more warning, guys!
  149. (07:14:08) Tinche: yeah Eva is pretty great, especially when it turns out she's part of the resistance
  150. (07:14:09) Cheeseness: The expressiveness of Glottis' voice acting and animation here is also stronger than I can recall any other games being at the time
  151. (07:14:17) The_Mad_Pirate: has started yet ?
  152. (07:14:18) Sven_Q45: Glitch in the garage?
  153. (07:14:18) somaen: The fastest speed run somehow glitches from the garage to year 3.
  154. (07:14:27) Cheeseness: The_Mad_Pirate: Yep
  155. (07:14:40) Cheeseness: somaen: Neat
  156. (07:14:48) somaen: Sven_Q45: You'll find it in the sub-30 minute speedrun on youtube.
  157. (07:14:50) Fhqwhgod: here's the only achievement I missed
  158. (07:14:53) Tinche: Glottis butt lattice.
  159. (07:14:57) Cheeseness: :D
  160. (07:15:05) somaen: Fhqwhgod: Early enough to redo easily though.
  161. (07:15:13) Fhqwhgod: exactly
  162. (07:15:18) Sven_Q45: Yes I saw a let´s player who did it accidantally. :D
  163. (07:15:18) jdw: this is the first lucasarts games where I didn’t have a feel for all of the music.
  164. (07:15:43) Tinche: Glottis wiggling his ears <3
  165. (07:16:01) Cheeseness: :D
  166. (07:16:01) PONTO: Yeah. He also does that when he gets his heart back! :D
  167. (07:16:13) Sven_Q45: In the German version he asks if Glottis is a swiss name. :D
  168. (07:16:20) Tinche: :D
  169. (07:16:27) TimeGentleman: Ha, funny how Manny watches GLottis' head movements
  170. (07:16:36) Tinche: I really need a Glottis avatar for twitter
  171. (07:16:51) liorean: I wonder if someone will remake the Grim Fandango: The Movie LP in the new engine...
  172. (07:16:56) Cheeseness: This was the first game I'd ever seen/played where characters' head movements meant something
  173. (07:16:57) kittenm4ster_ [andmatand@hide-B3B6CBA2.hsd1.or.comcast.net] entered the room.
  174. (07:17:02) PONTO: Apparently in the original there were some terrible clipping glitches in his animation...
  175. (07:17:03) jmlane left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  176. (07:17:26) PONTO: with his jaw going through his chest
  177. (07:17:28) Fhqwhgod: I even had terrible clipping glitches in the remaster
  178. (07:17:36) Cheeseness: The low res of the original renderer hid most of the clipping issues
  179. (07:17:52) Syd: Manny's refusing to run on double click in here for some reason. :P
  180. (07:17:52) Sven_Q45: I wish I have this!! http://www.adventure-treff.de/forum/viewtopic.php?p=601662#p601662
  181. (07:17:58) Sven_Q45: Bloody great!
  182. (07:18:04) Syd: So you get to watch me leisurely walk through the garage
  183. (07:18:16) Tinche: Manny's a classy guy
  184. (07:18:18) kittenm4ster left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  185. (07:18:21) Syd: I'll probably save and reload in a bit in case that's a bug
  186. (07:18:28) Cheeseness: Ha ha, it's funny to not see Manny run everywhere
  187. (07:18:38) Jenni: It's neat how Glottis' animation coming out of his hut is a separate animation but it's all fluid when it's run
  188. (07:18:42) Jenni: you wouldn't know it
  189. (07:18:52) kittenm4ster_: Reverb!
  190. (07:19:14) Syd: Gonna save and reload
  191. (07:19:17) The_Mad_Pirate: my favorite part is when Manny sings to the bee workers "Manny Manny Calavera needs no skin , needs no hair"
  192. (07:19:18) Cheeseness: Jenni: It's a lot more noticeable now that the game is high res
  193. (07:19:39) Syd: He still doesn't want to run. Weird.
  194. (07:19:40) PONTO: You can try to use the initial invoice with the hole punch
  195. (07:19:43) The_Mad_Pirate: Who is streamming ?
  196. (07:19:44) Jenni: I'll have to check that out on my next play
  197. (07:19:47) Syd: Never had that problem before
  198. (07:20:00) Jenni: can't tell on the stream :p
  199. (07:20:01) Tinche: *cough* hold shift and forwards
  200. (07:20:10) Cheeseness: And I suspect represents a massive amount of the work involved with replacing the character models
  201. (07:20:12) TimeGentleman: Put it on the bug report board, Syd!
  202. (07:20:21) Cheeseness: You can double click to run as well if you're using mouse controls
  203. (07:20:31) flesk: I remember it took me ages to find out I could go there when I first played the game.
  204. (07:20:36) The_Mad_Pirate: She is gonna miss the "Done it right achivement"
  205. (07:20:44) GFR_Lover [Mibbit@hide-F798D2FB.eu-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com] entered the room.
  206. (07:20:45) Syd: I'm trying to double click and it's not working. :P
  207. (07:20:52) Syd: Holding down shift works though
  208. (07:20:54) flesk: Even though you see the area if you go to the other end of the hall.
  209. (07:20:55) Cheeseness: Syd: Oh, right. You can still hold down shift though
  210. (07:20:56) Cheeseness: Yeah
  211. (07:21:12) Sven_Q45: It works! :D
  212. (07:21:13) GFR_Lover left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  213. (07:21:14) Tinche: he was actually right on the number nine quip :)
  214. (07:21:18) TimeGentleman: DO those key prompts show up in the inventory whichever control scheme you're using?
  215. (07:21:19) Cheeseness: There's a bit in the commentary where somebody (heh) mentions that there's no air travel in the land of the dead
  216. (07:21:39) Jenni: from what I played, the prompts always show up, yes
  217. (07:21:45) PONTO: try picking up the car!
  218. (07:21:49) GF_Lover [Mibbit@hide-F798D2FB.eu-west-1.compute.amazonaws.com] entered the room.
  219. (07:21:53) Cheeseness: Syd: Pick up the car
  220. (07:21:57) Fhqwhgod: cheeseness: strange I remember Manny flying
  221. (07:22:08) Fhqwhgod: for about 20 meters. downwards
  222. (07:22:10) Cheeseness: There's a massive blimp in year 2 ;D
  223. (07:22:33) Tinche: a blimp crashing is a central part of one of the puzzles
  224. (07:22:39) Tinche: "Olivia 1"
  225. (07:22:40) Bronsky [Bronsky@4889F629.B5966C75.AF9C5A2E.IP] entered the room.
  226. (07:22:42) Sven_Q45: Is the game brighter? the lightning better?
  227. (07:22:45) Cheeseness: Hey Bronsky
  228. (07:22:48) Bronsky: Hey
  229. (07:22:53) Cheeseness: Sven_Q45: Yeah, there's a new lighting system
  230. (07:22:56) PONTO: aw, you didn't "pick up" the car, did you?
  231. (07:22:57) Cheeseness: With self shadowing and stuff
  232. (07:22:57) kittenm4ster_: But I guess the blimp doesn't go to the Ninth Underworld place
  233. (07:23:04) The_Mad_Pirate: whose the girl who appears as an easter egg in here ?
  234. (07:23:05) Syd: I'll try to pick up the car on my way back to the DOD
  235. (07:23:19) The_Mad_Pirate: yeah , that one , Olivia.
  236. (07:23:28) GF_Lover: heeyyyy
  237. (07:23:33) TimeGentleman: Ha, they spelt practising incorrectly

  241. (07:24:00) Cheeseness: Hey GF_Lover
  242. (07:24:22) TimeGentleman: The mime is supposed to sound Jack Nicholson-y, right?
  243. (07:24:29) Tinche: yeah
  244. (07:24:32) Sven_Q45: Cheeseness you wrote spelt wrong. :D
  245. (07:24:33) TimeGentleman: cheeseness both are fine :p
  246. (07:24:33) GF_Lover: who's playing?
  247. (07:24:36) Syd: I am
  248. (07:24:36) Tinche: I think they mention it in the commentary
  249. (07:24:39) GF_Lover: who dares not to use tank control?
  250. (07:24:49) Cheeseness: So, is the clown's colouring his natural bone markings, or makeup? And if so, how are his eye sockets red?
  251. (07:24:50) Syd: Me, because I'm bad at them. :P
  252. (07:25:06) GF_Lover: nonsense!
  253. (07:25:14) GF_Lover: you should always use tank control!
  254. (07:25:25) Tinche: let it go, syd's self-conscious
  255. (07:25:42) TimeGentleman: cheeseness I think the markings are natural, but he's stuffed two red balloons in his eye sockets
  256. (07:25:44) Cheeseness: FWIW, it's an interesting feature to show off
  257. (07:25:49) Cheeseness: Hah
  258. (07:26:01) Jenni: did Syd type blam yet? :D
  259. (07:26:03) Tinche: but how would he see?
  260. (07:26:08) The_Mad_Pirate: never noticed his ballon changes colors when he twist one
  261. (07:26:20) TimeGentleman: Yeah, although I wouldn't play like this, it's interesting to see it all
  262. (07:26:21) Cheeseness: The_Mad_Pirate: Each balloon type is a different colour

  269. (07:27:10) Sven_Q45: Everybody loves GF!
  270. (07:27:13) Sven_Q45: ;)
  271. (07:27:17) TimeGentleman: climbing up skyscrapers as a matter of course
  272. (07:27:19) EricMahler: Hello Cheeseness
  273. (07:27:21) PONTO: So, those ties are regularly used by Don to escape the office...
  274. (07:27:32) Cheeseness: I love how it's believable that Manny is inept and useless here in year 1
  275. (07:27:45) Cheeseness: Yep, Don doesn't seem to spend much time there :D
  276. (07:27:47) TimeGentleman: Ha, those choices on the monitor look v different
  277. (07:27:54) kittenm4ster_: so apparently there are more responses on the computer than the original?
  278. (07:28:11) Jenni: no, it's just more obvious that you can scroll down now
  279. (07:28:15) Tinche: how far is rubacava from el marrow?
  280. (07:28:17) Cheeseness: I felt like there were more than I remembered, but it's been a long, long time since I played the game to explore content
  281. (07:28:18) kittenm4ster_: oh, is that it?
  282. (07:28:18) Sven_Q45: Heck i missed that. :(

  284. (07:28:22) Tinche: didn't have time to read the sign
  285. (07:28:23) TimeGentleman: 8km?
  286. (07:28:30) kittenm4ster_: yeah I can't remember how many the original had
  287. (07:28:37) The_Mad_Pirate: Cheeseness: His computer rigged , his sales stolen away

  292. (07:29:21) PONTO: Ah, by the way, Is everybody here still getting the invisible bread bug?
  293. (07:29:36) jdw: did I miss Syd toggling to the classic view earlier?
  294. (07:29:42) TimeGentleman: I thought the point and click mode had inventory window and icons..?
  295. (07:29:44) Cheeseness: PONTO: Yeah, it's still present, but only if you get a second loaf
  296. (07:29:47) Syd: I haven't toggled classic view
  297. (07:29:55) TimeGentleman: weird to keep the diegetic jacket but stick prompts on it!
  298. (07:30:00) Cheeseness: jdw: Nah, that's just the switching between pre-rendered stuff and real time stuff that the game's always done

  310. (07:31:11) GF_Lover: modern games are all mostly dumb
  311. (07:31:16) TimeGentleman: Do you think it's intenitonal that ejole sounds like e-coli (ie poisoning)?

  329. (07:33:15) The_Mad_Pirate: Glottis , are you loco ?
  330. (07:33:17) Cheeseness: That we get to see two reapings before Meche helps give a feel for Manny's job and highlights Meche as being something special
  331. (07:33:23) TimeGentleman: PONTO is that new? Or redone?
  332. (07:33:43) PONTO: I suppose it's old, but I never played the original...
  333. (07:33:56) PONTO: or do you mean the bones?
  334. (07:33:58) PONTO: that is new, i think
  335. (07:34:04) TimeGentleman: Oh. Why "notice the piano" then?
  336. (07:34:05) The_Mad_Pirate: Domino is a real a** though
  337. (07:34:15) liorean: Anybody feel like Pizza?
  338. (07:34:19) PONTO: Ah, because the piano goes crazy. like glottis :)

  346. (07:34:47) Cheeseness: Hey Permafry_42
  347. (07:34:47) Tinche: except for the clown, I guess
  348. (07:34:48) liorean: I was figuring Domino could take an order:)

  372. (07:36:09) DFLeePetty: Hey everyone
  373. (07:36:21) Tinche: pft, corporate corruption

  376. (07:36:36) Permafry_42: Syd is streaming right?
  377. (07:36:40) TimeGentleman: Lee - important question - did you go through a load of different "look" icons, as Manny doesn't have eyes?
  378. (07:36:41) Syd: Yep
  379. (07:36:56) DFLeePetty: hah, yes
  380. (07:37:01) DFLeePetty: Mark Hamer did most of those

  384. (07:37:22) DFLeePetty: Its one of those cases where an eye is universally understood as look
  385. (07:37:26) DFLeePetty: even though he has no eyes
  386. (07:37:29) Cheeseness: Also, is it normal to wear a mouthguard when doing this kind of punching?
  387. (07:37:34) Cheeseness: That bag's not going to hit back
  388. (07:37:43) kittenm4ster_: haha
  389. (07:37:52) TimeGentleman: Lee - yeah, it's a metaphorical eye :)
  390. (07:37:59) Salvius23 [Mibbit@hide-E51EC608.dhcp.fdul.wi.charter.com] entered the room.
  391. (07:38:00) DFLeePetty: THE INNER EYE
  392. (07:38:00) Tinche: I've never thought of that
  393. (07:38:08) kittenm4ster_ is now known as kittenm4ster
  394. (07:38:23) TimeGentleman: Cheeseness he doesn't have lips or tongue or anything so I guess it makes less difference
  395. (07:38:24) Permafry_42: i love the elementals designs
  396. (07:38:25) Cheeseness: Looks like there's some bad UV mapping on that demon's face there
  397. (07:38:27) PONTO: Ah, this guy's mouth needs to be fixed :P
  398. (07:38:35) Sven_Q45: a few years ago I played it - without solution of course - and one year was 1 hour long! :P Except the 4th wich is a little longer.
  399. (07:38:39) DFLeePetty: There are bad UV's on a lot of models
  400. (07:38:42) liorean: I always like when games assign different text colours to different characters
  401. (07:38:43) DFLeePetty: We couldn't fix them
  402. (07:38:45) The_Mad_Pirate: DFLeePetty: How much scene wall textures had to repainted to match hi resolution ?
  403. (07:38:58) TimeGentleman: tell the noobs here what a UV is
  404. (07:39:04) DFLeePetty: We didn't repaint any of the backrounds
  405. (07:39:07) DFLeePetty: they are the original
  406. (07:39:13) Cheeseness: It's the alignment of the 3D models on the textures
  407. (07:39:21) DFLeePetty: UV's are coordinates that specify how a texture is mapped onto a 3D model
  408. (07:39:22) Cheeseness: Or the textures on the 3D models, depending on how you'd like to think about it :D
  409. (07:39:25) The_Mad_Pirate: DFLeePetty: nice , they scaled up pretty well
  410. (07:39:39) DFLeePetty: If they are not done properly, textures can look stretched
  411. (07:39:43) TimeGentleman: ah, ok. I probably should know that from reading the GF Deluxe forums!
  412. (07:40:02) kittenm4ster: Why couldn't you fix the UVs on the models?
  413. (07:40:05) Permafry_42: how many people at DF played through the whole game using only tank controls? the new controls are so much easier
  414. (07:40:08) TimeGentleman: I mean - did you get that, noobs?
  415. (07:40:11) Cheeseness: Increasing resolution is a bit of a double edged sword - it exposes some things that weren't visible previously (like the gap between the pre-rendered tie rope and the 3d geometry)
  416. (07:40:13) DFLeePetty: The funny part about re-doing the art is that we had NO source assets for this entire game
  417. (07:40:26) liorean: Backgrounds do look a bit bad in comparison to the characters etc.
  418. (07:40:38) DFLeePetty: Brandon wrote tools that ripped game-level content out of the game and reconstructed it so we could alter certain things
  419. (07:40:39) Tinche: I've played through the game like 5 times using tank controls, and I'm not about to stop dammit
  420. (07:40:51) DFLeePetty: But there were no importers, so we couldn't import a new model, for example (with fixed UV's)
  421. (07:41:03) kittenm4ster: oh wow
  422. (07:41:11) The_Mad_Pirate: DFLeePetty: I am still wondering what has in the other 6 or 7 Digital Tapes.
  423. (07:41:11) kittenm4ster: hax0r style
  424. (07:41:25) Sven_Q45: I played it i think more than 50 times. :D
  425. (07:41:29) DFLeePetty: We could up-rez all of the textures, just by replacing them, since they were not munged or packed into anything
  426. (07:41:33) Fhqwhgod: I played the game with Tank controls for the achievement. I will never ever do that again
  427. (07:41:47) The_Mad_Pirate: DFLeePetty: you had to re-UV most of the textures ?
  428. (07:41:48) DFLeePetty: And we could re-do the lighting in the world by simply stomping the old lighting and writing a whole new pipeline for that
  429. (07:41:58) Cheeseness: Aww, I prefer the tank controls
  430. (07:42:09) Salvius23: Has anyone else felt the need to remap the tank controls to match the original numpad controls?
  431. (07:42:09) DFLeePetty: We repainted 100% of the character and inventory textures
  432. (07:42:14) DFLeePetty: things that were on live 3D models
  433. (07:42:15) Tinche: pft in 20 years the youngsters will be all like "ew gramps how can you use the mouse instead of the eye tracker 2000(tm)"
  434. (07:42:16) GameClubFan_741429 [Mibbit@63F21597.C668C3E9.37DB8DB6.IP] entered the room.
  435. (07:42:44) Cheeseness: Salvius23: Do they Just Work if you turn off numlock?
  436. (07:42:46) TimeGentleman: out of interest, Lee, did you ever read through the Deluxe forums? It was v interesting to see them working loads of stuff out
  437. (07:43:01) DFLeePetty: I looked at them a bit when we first started
  438. (07:43:06) DFLeePetty: Neat stuff!
  439. (07:43:11) Cheeseness: I thought ThunderPeel was going to join us, but I don't see him here
  440. (07:43:36) liorean: Eye tracking would be a horrible input device. Vision is made to jump over the scene, you aren't taking in the entire image in one look.
  441. (07:43:40) GameClubFan_837793 [Mibbit@hide-9AD23EDF.hsd1.ca.comcast.net] entered the room.
  442. (07:43:44) DFLeePetty: If it was possible in our timeline (which it wasn't), I would've wanted to re-model everything -- not so much to make it higher resolution, but mainly to make it "smooth skinned", instead of interpenetrating objects
  443. (07:43:47) Permafry_42: who designed the 16:9 to 4:3 bars?
  444. (07:43:56) DFLeePetty: But that would require also writing a skeleton/bone system
  445. (07:43:59) DFLeePetty: Mark Hamer did the bars
  446. (07:44:07) Tinche: you'll probably twitch your eyebrow to click or something
  447. (07:44:08) Salvius23: Just toggling numlock didn't seem to help.
  448. (07:44:09) DFLeePetty: He based it on trim inside of the game
  449. (07:44:21) Jenni: there were some neat tools made for the deluxe project - Nitrus worked on some tools that would even let you replace the models
  450. (07:44:31) Cheeseness: DFLeePetty: If you had've been able to re-create the models, would you have also re-created some of the pre-rendered animations for the characters so that the models would match better?
  451. (07:44:55) DFLeePetty: Yea, we would've have to have done that, too. Unfortunately, none of the pre-rendered source files existed
  452. (07:44:59) DFLeePetty: so we couldn't have
  453. (07:45:04) TimeGentleman: Like, say, a certain CIGAR
  454. (07:45:15) DFLeePetty: So even if we up-rezzed the models they would no longer match the pre-rendered cutscenes
  455. (07:45:17) DFLeePetty: so ugg
  456. (07:45:18) Permafry_42: cool i had thought it was similar to bioshock 1's menus, but either way i like the simple elegance compared to just black bars
  457. (07:45:18) The_Mad_Pirate: I should ask Oliver how much of the differences between Lua 2.5 and Lua 5.1 affected the engine.
  458. (07:45:19) Cheeseness: Ha ha, I hate the intersecting planes so much :D
  459. (07:45:30) somaen: Cheeseness: The movies in some cases HAVE to be remade if you change the models
  460. (07:45:37) Jenni: yeah - that's one of the things the deluxe project was debating too
  461. (07:45:39) Cheeseness: somaen: Right - that's what I'm saying
  462. (07:45:41) TimeGentleman: Lee - it definitely seems like a delicate balancing act
  463. (07:45:42) DFLeePetty: Yea, we did a rendering-side trick to smooth out the intersecting model joints
  464. (07:45:48) somaen: Since some transitions are videos played on top of it
  465. (07:45:49) The_Mad_Pirate: since original Grim Fandango scripts were written for Lua 2.5
  466. (07:46:05) Jenni: how much to change the models, since they would look out of place with the cutscenes
  467. (07:46:07) DFLeePetty: If we had a lot more money, I would've re-built EVERYTHING, so it was all real-time, with no pre-rendered cutscenes
  468. (07:46:08) Cheeseness: DFLeePetty: Yeah, I noticed that. For a while I was sure that the fingers were proper 3D meshes
  469. (07:46:26) DFLeePetty: so everything would've matched
  470. (07:46:26) Corben [Mibbit@C625CE87.CB6E68B8.FFA6074C.IP] entered the room.
  471. (07:46:32) Cheeseness: Hey Corben
  472. (07:46:34) DFLeePetty: Our internal engine would've done it fine
  473. (07:46:35) somaen: The_Mad_Pirate: Well, some alpha-version with patches from Bret to allow for cofunctions.
  474. (07:46:38) Jenni: at the end, I believe Thunderpeel wanted to just have the demons rounded out, but to keep the calaveras the same
  475. (07:46:42) Sven_Q45: loco? lol
  476. (07:46:43) TimeGentleman: DFLeePetty - would you have done that by eye?
  477. (07:46:44) Fireflower [Mibbit@hide-3584030.bredband.comhem.se] entered the room.
  478. (07:46:47) Corben: hi!
  479. (07:46:49) somaen: There's a paper on cofunctions in Lua online that refers to him btw.
  480. (07:46:52) Fireflower: Hey
  481. (07:47:03) DFLeePetty: Well, we could extract the space by reverse-engineering the depth maps
  482. (07:47:06) TimeGentleman: matching the cutscene animations, I mean
  483. (07:47:07) DFLeePetty: which we did
  484. (07:47:10) DFLeePetty: for the new lighting pipeline
  485. (07:47:14) Cheeseness: Right
  486. (07:47:18) GameClubFan_741429 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  487. (07:47:19) TimeGentleman: oh, ok. So clever!
  488. (07:47:30) DFLeePetty: We could take the depth map from the backgrounds and break them into quads, which were then placed in 3D space inside of Maya
  489. (07:47:32) somaen: DFLeePetty: But you're still stuck with a "paper mario"-view of the space, so no way to do non-static camera.
  490. (07:47:32) DFLeePetty: so we could move lights around
  491. (07:47:33) Permafry_42: was there any plans to fix the inability to run towards something that you're interacting with without first running to right in front of it?
  492. (07:47:34) Cheeseness: That's where the env geometry that we saw oliver playing with in the documentary came from, right?
  493. (07:47:44) The_Mad_Pirate: I wonder if Bret did some assitance for Grim Fandango Remastered
  494. (07:47:51) DFLeePetty: Well, someone, we would've modeled a real 3D space based on those dimensions
  495. (07:47:54) DFLeePetty: so we wouldn't be locked down
  496. (07:47:58) DFLeePetty: Bret did not
  497. (07:48:02) somaen: The_Mad_Pirate: He did commentary atleast
  498. (07:48:27) DFLeePetty: Cheese - yes
  499. (07:49:07) DFLeePetty: The shadows from the blinds were "faked" by placing some "light blocking" cubes in front of the lights
  500. (07:49:36) DFLeePetty: We took the face textures from 128x128 to 2048x2048
  501. (07:49:39) PONTO: And this is the last time he sees her within a year
  502. (07:50:06) Tinche: I really like the faces
  503. (07:50:06) Rated_Marykate [Mibbit@hide-3629C938.hr.hr.cox.net] entered the room.
  504. (07:50:10) Cheeseness: Bit of bad masking there on the floor for Don's shadow
  505. (07:50:12) Cheeseness: Hey Rated_Marykate :)
  506. (07:50:34) Sven_Q45: Funny bones. In the german version he says bag of bones. :D
  507. (07:50:34) DFLeePetty: Cheese, yea there were all sorts of problems we had to hack around
  508. (07:50:35) Rated_Marykate: X!!
  509. (07:50:36) Cheeseness: So much expressive animation here
  510. (07:50:51) Tinche: I don't get how this is Manny's fault, though
  511. (07:50:52) DFLeePetty: for example, man of the scenes had NO depth maps in spots -- they had been erased for performance/memory savings
  512. (07:51:09) DFLeePetty: So we had to reconstruct depth in those areas by placing 3D planes in the right approximate depth
  513. (07:51:10) TimeGentleman: texted Thunderpeel, he couldn't make it tonight
  514. (07:51:13) Cheeseness: Tinche: He stole Dom's client and she's the one disadvantaged by it
  515. (07:51:17) DFLeePetty: and tag them to write into the z buffer
  516. (07:51:17) Cheeseness: Oh, thanks TimeGentleman
  517. (07:51:21) DFLeePetty: but we had to eyeball it
  518. (07:51:29) The_Mad_Pirate: And Sproutting makes his appareance !
  519. (07:51:36) Tinche: Cheese: but how is it his fault the computer wouldn't give her a ticket
  520. (07:51:52) Cheeseness: Tinche: That part's not his fault, but it's less important than her being out there on her own
  521. (07:51:56) TimeGentleman: example of one of those areas, Lee?
  522. (07:51:58) Cheeseness: Ha ha, Sal's lean-ins are the best :D
  523. (07:52:09) DFLeePetty: The garage
  524. (07:52:15) DFLeePetty: most of the garage had no depth maps on the floor
  525. (07:52:19) DFLeePetty: so we couldn't even cast shadows there
  526. (07:52:21) GameClubFan_741429 [Mibbit@63F21597.C668C3E9.37DB8DB6.IP] entered the room.
  527. (07:52:23) DFLeePetty: until we manually reconstructed it
  528. (07:52:25) TimeGentleman: Tinbche - remember Don and Domino are thinking on their feet, so blaming Manny may not make complete sense but it's what they have to do
  529. (07:52:29) DFLeePetty: Even manny's office had some of those issues
  530. (07:52:29) The_Mad_Pirate: Salvador Limones
  531. (07:52:38) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: That too!
  532. (07:52:41) The_Mad_Pirate: he saves lemons
  533. (07:52:43) Tinche: alright, point taken
  534. (07:52:57) The_Mad_Pirate: saves lemon from a crooked corporation
  535. (07:53:18) Corben left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  536. (07:53:19) Tinche: Cheeseness: Salvador does another lean-in somewhere, right?
  537. (07:53:28) The_Mad_Pirate: in year 4
  538. (07:53:33) Corben [Mibbit@C625CE87.CB6E68B8.FFA6074C.IP] entered the room.
  539. (07:53:35) Rated_Marykate: I love the skeletons have facial hair. :)
  540. (07:53:35) Permafry_42: i love secret bases. Always wanted a house with a secret chamber just so i could make it my secret base. Must be why i loved gone home so much
  541. (07:53:48) Cheeseness: Tinche: He's got a bunch - even his animation when his silhouette leans in through the window is funny to me ^_^
  542. (07:53:56) The_Mad_Pirate: i saw those memes about Manny finally making chinese shadows
  543. (07:53:57) Rated_Marykate: ^that
  544. (07:54:14) EricMahler left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  545. (07:54:16) kittenm4ster: Permafry_42: haha yesss Gone Home has some awesome secret passages
  546. (07:54:17) Cheeseness: Manny doesn't care
  547. (07:54:21) TimeGentleman: Lee - why would they be able to discard them for certain locations? (pls remember I know no tech stuff!)
  548. (07:54:26) Cheeseness: He's going to press all the buttons without regard for anybody else
  549. (07:54:32) GameClubFan_227433 [Mibbit@hide-55222DFF.retail.telecomitalia.it] entered the room.
  550. (07:54:36) Corben left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  551. (07:54:37) GameClubFan_387104 [Mibbit@7355A18B.9A3212CB.310024A1.IP] entered the room.
  552. (07:54:47) GameClubFan_387104 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  553. (07:54:48) kittenm4ster: Is it just me or just Manny's face look more low-rez than other characters in cutscenes?
  554. (07:54:50) Sven_Q45: Secret room? To store all my adventure stuff. :)
  555. (07:55:04) Cheeseness: Another Sal lean-in coming up :D
  556. (07:55:07) kittenm4ster: *does
  557. (07:55:15) Tinche: hehe!
  558. (07:55:30) Cheeseness: Ha ha ha
  559. (07:55:37) The_Mad_Pirate: Salvador appearences from behind are hillarious
  560. (07:55:41) DFLeePetty: Because in some of those areas they kind of "faked it" -- they didn't need depth for a variety of reasons. For example, in some cases Manny couldn't walk onto those areas, BUT once we added real shadow casting lights, his shadow would fall there -- but there was no depth info so the shadow didn't know where to go
  561. (07:55:53) kittenm4ster: I'm wondering if they made Manny's face more low-rez to make it match the realtime version of Manny
  562. (07:56:03) Cheeseness: The wide garage shot changes before Manny get near anything
  563. (07:56:11) TimeGentleman: ahhh, ok
  564. (07:56:13) Cheeseness: So he didn't need to collide with anything I guess
  565. (07:56:22) Mimness [Mibbit@hide-3FFAB4B8.lns20.hba2.internode.on.net] entered the room.
  566. (07:56:23) DFLeePetty: The pre-rendered cutscenes used the same low resolution textures as the original game, for the most part
  567. (07:56:24) The_Mad_Pirate: DFLeePetty: so basically depth information had to be reconstructed for most scenes ?
  568. (07:56:25) Cheeseness: Heya Mimness
  569. (07:56:36) DFLeePetty: the just looked better because of the rendering quality of the time
  570. (07:56:44) DFLeePetty: Mad Pirate, bits on many scenes, yes
  571. (07:56:52) TimeGentleman: is the projection on their faces new? That's really nice
  572. (07:57:01) The_Mad_Pirate: Mimness: Hello !
  573. (07:57:04) kittenm4ster: ohhh I didn't know that; I always assumed the textures were higher rez in the cutscenes
  574. (07:57:08) Cheeseness: DFLeePetty: What's your first memory of Grim Fandango? What kind of impact did the game have on you when you first played it?
  575. (07:57:24) GameClubFan_741429 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  576. (07:57:39) DFLeePetty: Well, Cheese, this is how old I am -- I was working in the game industry when it came out! I was working at a company called Accolade
  577. (07:57:54) Cheeseness: You were! We talked about that previously :D
  578. (07:58:00) DFLeePetty: someone told me "Lee, you have to play this game, its awesome". And they were right, it was like someone totally designed a game with my own aesthetic
  579. (07:58:02) Cheeseness: I played it when it first came out as well, but I was only making games at home ^_^
  580. (07:58:32) TimeGentleman: DFLEePetty remote question from Thunderpeel - what ended up as the symbol on Salvador's hat?
  581. (07:58:36) DFLeePetty: I think I was working on the ill-fated Star Control 4 at the time
  582. (07:58:39) Cheeseness: For anybody who's interested, we did an interview with Lee when we did Stacking - we talked about his past career a bit http://cheesetalks.twolofbees.com/dfgc_leepetty.php
  583. (07:58:43) The_Mad_Pirate: Viva la resolucion ! ( specially the high rez )
  584. (07:58:44) Permafry_42: i'm a noob who only started playing it recently. i think i had just been born when i came out
  585. (07:58:48) Tinche: I was like 14 when it came out ;)
  586. (07:59:10) DFLeePetty: Well, I was pretty young. I started working in the game industry at 21
  587. (07:59:12) Sven_Q45: The_Mad_Pirate lol
  588. (07:59:20) Permafry_42: *wait nm i was 6 i think when it came out
  589. (07:59:37) DFLeePetty: I don't remember what was on Salvator's hat. I remember asking Tim and he said "I dunno"
  590. (07:59:50) Akz: there's a bug with the depth map here when leaving Dom's office, Manny clips into the window
  591. (07:59:54) Sven_Q45: I was nin but didn´t know what LucasArts is. :D I only knew Dott and MM.
  592. (08:00:05) Permafry_42: i love this rooms' ceiling texture
  593. (08:00:05) Fhqwhgod: poor Manny. No desk drawers forever
  594. (08:00:09) Mimness: Hey dudes :)
  595. (08:00:10) DFLeePetty: Akz, that's actually something different that we couldn't fix
  596. (08:00:15) Tinche: actually my high school thesis was an implementation of tetris in c++, but I don't think that counts as "the game industry"
  597. (08:00:16) The_Mad_Pirate: I think Matt Hansen mentioned he never even imagined working on a remastering of Grim Fandango on PAX 2014
  598. (08:00:17) TimeGentleman: Lee - did you guys never find out? TIm only told the 1st half of that story!
  599. (08:00:34) DFLeePetty: There are two different types of "overlay" animations
  600. (08:00:52) DFLeePetty: And they had those low-rez hard edges and some of them were around door edges
  601. (08:01:02) DFLeePetty: And we didn't have the source assets, only the compressed flip book textures
  602. (08:01:09) DFLeePetty: So we didn't really have a way to fix them
  603. (08:01:11) Permafry_42: yay we're almost at the robert frost joke!
  604. (08:01:21) Akz: DFLeePetty: ah, I see :)
  605. (08:01:24) Fireflower: First time i'm seeing Grim Fandando in action.
  606. (08:01:36) Cheeseness: Is alpha for the animations baked into each frame or is it a separate channel?
  607. (08:01:41) Permafry_42: this puzzle was so weird when i first did it btw
  608. (08:01:42) Akz: it's not very noticable anyway, just caught my eye during my playthrough
  609. (08:01:42) DFLeePetty: Oh, Hi Marykate
  610. (08:02:20) TimeGentleman: cool how that coral is foreshadowing
  611. (08:02:25) GameClubFan_741429 [Mibbit@63F21597.C668C3E9.37DB8DB6.IP] entered the room.
  612. (08:02:31) Tinche: the cooing is so soothing
  613. (08:02:52) Fireflower: vicious pigeons
  614. (08:03:04) Tinche: they're just protecting their babies
  615. (08:03:10) Permafry_42: i love the way manny says it too
  616. (08:03:10) PONTO: DFLeePetty Possible to fix the shadows on this scene?
  617. (08:03:19) Cheeseness: I streamed this a bit yesterday and kept accidentally putting the bread in first >_<
  618. (08:03:28) PONTO: I mean, have Manny's shadow oriented like th e vents
  619. (08:03:41) DFLeePetty: There was some issue with this scene, and I don't remember what it was
  620. (08:03:41) Tinche: Cheeseness: you just subconciously wanted to feed the pigeons peacefully.
  621. (08:03:48) Cheeseness: It's true _^^
  622. (08:03:57) Sven_Q45: Cheeseness I did that when I played it the first time.
  623. (08:03:58) DFLeePetty: but we couldn't get the shadows working, which is why Manny just has his "AO blob"
  624. (08:04:08) Permafry_42: oh yeah who added the steam achievements? I really liked them since it made it easier to find some of the easter eggs
  625. (08:04:26) The_Mad_Pirate: DFLeePetty: How much of the original assets could be salvaged from those 2 Digital Tapes ?
  626. (08:04:29) kittenm4ster: yeah, just like the Psychonauts achievements
  627. (08:04:34) DFLeePetty: almost none
  628. (08:04:43) Cheeseness: I lived with a guy who would chase pigeons and say "Yeah! Beat it, you lousy little ledge-peckers!"
  629. (08:04:47) DFLeePetty: We had some of the pre-rendered frames from the cutscenes
  630. (08:05:02) DFLeePetty: So we could re-compress them with very little compression and full color bit-depth
  631. (08:05:14) GameClubFan_921035 [Mibbit@hide-85855199.nyc.res.rr.com] entered the room.
  632. (08:05:20) DFLeePetty: We had NO real time assets -- textures, models, etc
  633. (08:05:34) DFLeePetty: We also had NO source assets that were used to make the pre-rendered movies
  634. (08:05:41) Tinche: hm the Steam achievements are hidden, right? Except the 4 years and tank controls
  635. (08:05:48) DFLeePetty: Also, no UI stuff -- but I wanted to re-do all of that anyways
  636. (08:05:55) The_Mad_Pirate: I would have thought Lucasarts had some propietary compression algorithm at that time.
  637. (08:06:04) DFLeePetty: they did, yes
  638. (08:06:10) DFLeePetty: its still not very good by today's standards
  639. (08:06:22) TimeGentleman: DFLeePetty - what's it like working with a completed work's art design so closelyt? Do you spot a load of hidden depth to it, or lots of mistakes?
  640. (08:06:28) Wildax left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  641. (08:06:43) Rated_Marykate: ... :D Hey...
  642. (08:06:43) Wildax [Mibbit@hide-28FF640B.retail.telecomitalia.it] entered the room.
  643. (08:07:06) DFLeePetty: Haha, well, luckily for me, I was working in the game industry at the time, so I was familiar with the difference between "artifacts" and artistic intent
  644. (08:07:12) DFLeePetty: for things from that era
  645. (08:07:12) The_Mad_Pirate: Rated_Marykate: Yo !
  646. (08:07:15) Rated_Marykate: ...(Delayed w kitten issues.)

  649. (08:07:57) The_Mad_Pirate: DFLeePetty: you mentioned something about that in the documentary regarding those shoe's textures
  650. (08:08:01) TimeGentleman: Ha, so did it give you nostalgia waves, then?
  651. (08:08:02) DFLeePetty: The overall visual design is amazing! by any standards, and we jus wanted to remove some of the artifacts that were left overs of the tech. limitations of the time
  652. (08:08:19) DFLeePetty: It mainly made me glad I don't have to work with those limitations anymore
  653. (08:08:30) DFLeePetty: Ah yea, the shoe textures were ass
  654. (08:08:34) TimeGentleman: ha ha!
  655. (08:08:37) DFLeePetty: err, I mean...low resolution
  656. (08:08:42) Cheeseness: heh
  657. (08:08:49) DFLeePetty: sorry, I come from a long line of rogues and outlaws
  658. (08:09:07) Jenni: Admiral Cruller... your boat? Are you... in love with it?
  659. (08:09:36) Rated_Marykate: I love the writing... the dramatic tone has that little smolder ...held back, but palpable.
  660. (08:09:39) TimeGentleman: this scene has a real matte painting feel to it. v wizard of oz
  661. (08:09:46) Cheeseness: He pretends to not, but Manny cares ^_^
  662. (08:10:06) TimeGentleman: THE SIGN!
  663. (08:10:06) DFLeePetty: It was fun working with Peter to do the new key art, in the old stye.
  664. (08:10:08) Rated_Marykate: Such is life, Cheese.
  665. (08:10:11) Fireflower1 [Mibbit@hide-3584030.bredband.comhem.se] entered the room.
  666. (08:10:22) TimeGentleman: DFLeePetty - "key art"?
  667. (08:10:27) Tinche: haha Glottis got fired and stole the company car
  668. (08:10:30) DFLeePetty: When we were talking about the new cover/key art, I suggested that we ask Peter Chan to do a new image exactly how he would've done it back then -- pencil
  669. (08:10:41) Cheeseness: It's great
  670. (08:10:43) DFLeePetty: Key art is an industry term for the image that is used on covers, promotional posters, etc
  671. (08:10:47) Rated_Marykate: Gawd, the polygons... like a rock-candy world, was it not? <3
  672. (08:10:49) TimeGentleman: ahhh ok
  673. (08:10:53) Jenni: Judging by how nice Manny is to Glottis, Meche, and the Angelitos I almost believe that Manny really doesn't know what he did to get punished in the afterlife
  674. (08:10:58) The_Mad_Pirate: DFLeePetty: Not to mention fixed GPU pipelines instead of modern flexible Shaders
  675. (08:11:05) Fhqwhgod: I usually don't notice the red stripe on Glottis until that scene
  676. (08:11:10) Cheeseness: Jenni: I believe him when he says he doesn't know

  921. (08:31:36) DFLeePetty: Cheese, yea we talk about that sort of thing all the time -- remastering some of Tim's old games
  922. (08:31:37) Tinche: works really well to close it all up
  923. (08:31:42) DFLeePetty: This was the first time it happened
  924. (08:31:44) liorean: Man, the wind is crazy loud today. It must have found just the right angle to blow past the entrance to the ventilation drums on the roof
  925. (08:31:45) Cheeseness: :)
  926. (08:31:49) Cheeseness: Do you think you might get to work on DoTT?
  927. (08:31:53) TimeGentleman: Lee, are you on DOTT?
  928. (08:32:03) TimeGentleman: jinx, you owe me a Coke Cheeseness
  929. (08:32:06) DFLeePetty: I am not on DOTT. I am busy with something else
  930. (08:32:13) Rated_Marykate: ...mermaids
  931. (08:32:14) TimeGentleman: oooh, secret!
  932. (08:32:15) Fhqwhgod: are you happy with the sales of the remaster so far? Also which platform sells the most copies?
  933. (08:32:17) Rated_Marykate: ;)
  934. (08:32:18) Cheeseness: TimeGentleman: I see four seconds between those messges!
  935. (08:32:20) TimeGentleman: It's Full Thrtottle, isn't it?
  936. (08:32:29) DFLeePetty: I am currently exploring mermaids. So to speak
  937. (08:32:35) Syd: Going live again
  938. (08:32:38) DFLeePetty: Grim has been selling well!
  939. (08:32:41) Tinche: honestly I've never felt too much of a need for a remastered dott since it works so well with scummvm
  940. (08:32:45) DFLeePetty: Its almost split between steam and ps4
  941. (08:32:47) Cheeseness: Pause and play if you don't see the stream
  942. (08:32:56) Cheeseness: Wow, people are buying it for consoles?
  943. (08:32:56) Rated_Marykate: Mermaids approve.
  944. (08:32:58) Syd: Let me know when it's live. :)
  945. (08:33:04) GameClubFan_499529 left the room (quit: Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
  946. (08:33:11) DFLeePetty: Yea, Sony has done a great job of promoting it
  947. (08:33:20) Sven_Q45: no Syd.
  948. (08:33:26) DFLeePetty: And it works well with the ps4 controller ,too
  949. (08:33:27) Cheeseness: Nothing yet, Syd
  950. (08:33:31) TimeGentleman: Lee - how do you feel overall about DF being so open and transparent?
  951. (08:33:34) Syd: Should be up soon
  952. (08:33:37) Syd: Twitch is slow. :P
  953. (08:33:47) DFLeePetty: I like it BUT I really don't like being on camera :)
  954. (08:33:54) DFA_Supporter: I've played DOTT on my phone recently, It's amazing how well a 4yr old phone can run ScummVM...
  955. (08:33:54) Permafry_42: yeah that happens a lot when i stream too. no worries syd
  956. (08:33:56) DFLeePetty: Its really hard to watch yourself
  957. (08:33:57) TimeGentleman: I ask because Matt was talking about the grief you guys get
  958. (08:34:02) Rated_Marykate: Little known fact: Mermaids prefer fishnets, when bearing legs.
  959. (08:34:05) Sven_Q45: So Amazon didn´t help twitch? :P
  960. (08:34:06) liorean: Live
  961. (08:34:12) Syd: Alrighty
  962. (08:34:13) Rated_Marykate: bearing/baring?
  963. (08:34:14) TimeGentleman: Lee - you sometimes get stitched up by 2PP!
  964. (08:34:15) liorean: And ads
  965. (08:34:16) Jenni: Yeah, I played DOTT on my iPad 3

  968. (08:34:19) Fhqwhgod: it's up
  969. (08:34:19) Syd: Hoping for no bugs this time, but saved just in case there is one
  970. (08:34:27) DFLeePetty: Well, anytime you are out there in public, you do get some hate, yup
  971. (08:34:30) DFLeePetty: I get hate mail
  972. (08:34:32) DFLeePetty: but not a lot!
  973. (08:34:38) TimeGentleman: REmo called them out on that too when he interviewed them on the podcast
  974. (08:34:47) DFLeePetty: And 2PP does like editing in my worse moments for comedic effect
  975. (08:34:48) Cheeseness: Aww, I don't think you deserve hate mail
  976. (08:34:54) DFLeePetty: Good idea, Marykate
  977. (08:34:54) Tinche: ok I've gotta go tuck in the wife. Laters everyone, was great chatting with y'all

  1002. (08:37:07) Rated_Marykate: 6th flying Sense, fhqwhgod
1003. (08:37:12) Fhqwhgod: there are at least two more in Year 3
1004. (08:37:14) liorean: Internet in particular is prone to hate being vented

1014. (08:37:56) TimeGentleman: yeah, internet + gamer culture can suck sometimes
  1015. (08:37:57) Rated_Marykate: ;)
1016. (08:38:00) Cheeseness: The soundtrack as a whole is amazing
1017. (08:38:07) Fhqwhgod: also so much hate in the steamcommunity forums before the release
1018. (08:38:16) Cheeseness: Peter McConnell said he might be able to join us. I'm hoping we'll be able to get him along at some point
1019. (08:38:26) Jenni: yeah, the gog forums had their share too
1020. (08:38:30) Fhqwhgod: I liked the "another white male protagonist" topic though
1021. (08:38:31) DFLeePetty: I got nothing to complain about really. I'm very lucky to be in this industry and DF is very lucky to have people who like our games
  1022. (08:38:44) Rated_Marykate: 'don't call me shirley' (missing line)
1023. (08:38:56) PONTO: that "white male protagonist" thing was where?
  1024. DFA_Supporter DFLeePetty
1025. (08:39:01) Cheeseness: DFLeePetty: I think that players and fans are lucky to have people like yourself and companies like DF working on stuff they care about
1026. (08:39:08) Rated_Marykate: and if people love your games...
1027. (08:39:11) Fhqwhgod: Steam. It's locked long ago though
1028. (08:39:29) TimeGentleman: Lee - yeah, I find it hard to figure out what the general consensus on DF is, because I hang out on the DF forums full of lovers, but then the minority of haters is also vocal..!
1029. (08:39:31) Fhqwhgod: was good for a laugh
1030. (08:39:51) TimeGentleman: FWIW I think it's really cool that you guys are opening up, hope the industry follows
  1031. (08:39:58) Cheeseness: Same here
1032. (08:40:02) Jenni: the majority are somewhere in between I think
1033. (08:40:06) TimeGentleman: Did Syd look at the lingua yet?
1034. (08:40:07) The_Mad_Pirate: Manny really manages to transform Rubacava in such short amount of time
1035. (08:40:11) flesk: It's probably inevitable that you get some hate once you reach a certain critical amount of popularity.
  1036. (08:40:22) Fhqwhgod: http://steamcommunity.com/app/316790/discussions/0/620703493318688536/

1038. (08:40:26) TimeGentleman: Jenni yeah, maybe leaning to positive
  1039. (08:40:32) Syd: The lingua?
1040. (08:40:45) Cheeseness: It was Manny in the back, screaming like a cat tied to a cruise missile"
  1041. (08:40:46) Syd: I thought i've looked at everything. :P
1042. (08:40:48) TimeGentleman: Syd yeah it's one of the dishes in the restaurant before you finish this year

  1044. (08:40:59) Jenni: yeah
1045. (08:41:03) Syd: I'll look for it when I go back up there
1046. (08:41:05) TimeGentleman: Syd it's foreshadowing of the tattoo puzzle
1047. (08:41:08) DFA_Supporter: Love the car talk, Tim got it close enough that is almost passable to a real car guy :)
  1048. (08:41:14) Rated_Marykate: glottis
1049. (08:41:25) TimeGentleman: Tim IS a real car guy!

  1051. (08:41:31) Rated_Marykate: ...........tongue
1052. (08:41:38) Cheeseness: Is the bonewagon almost passable to a real car person?
1053. (08:41:41) DFLeePetty: Me, I'm barely a man. I don't like working on cars or watching sports.
  1054. (08:42:07) Sven_Q45: I like not all cars., ;)
1055. (08:42:22) TimeGentleman: Lee - so if you have to design cars, they make no sense?
1056. (08:42:26) Rated_Marykate: I like classic cars with curves and chrome.
  1057. (08:42:33) Rated_Marykate: Not into sports either.

1060. (08:42:42) DFLeePetty: And I love the visual design of cars
  1061. (08:42:49) Rated_Marykate: Lengua
1062. (08:42:49) DFLeePetty: I'm just not "mechanically inclined"
1063. (08:42:50) The_Mad_Pirate: dockmaster voice it reminds me to jack palance
1064. (08:42:51) Jenni: I really like the Terrafugia Transition - if I had one of those, I'd be nut about it I think
  1065. (08:42:52) Sven_Q45: Rated_Marykate Yes chrome.
  1066. (08:43:06) Rated_Marykate: Chrome... shiny... ftw

  1069. (08:43:14) Jenni: but that's more a plane than a car
1070. (08:43:25) Cheeseness: DFLeePetty: Was there a particularly fun bit to work on with Grim Remastered that you can recall?
1071. (08:43:27) DFLeePetty: Chrome is great. Designing the chrome in Brutal Legend was a lot of fun
  1072. (08:43:30) ***Rated_Marykate is studious and inquisitive
1073. (08:43:40) The_Mad_Pirate: John Romero seems to love cars too. At least that's what documentaries seem to imply.
  1074. (08:43:44) Fireflower1: Google Chrome
1075. (08:43:46) DFLeePetty: I liked designing the lighting system with Oliver
1076. (08:43:52) DFLeePetty: And lighting the first handful of scenes.
  1077. (08:44:07) Rated_Marykate: lighting and surfaces ... ^_^
1078. (08:44:15) DFLeePetty: I also liked doing some of the promo posters and new logo. I don't usually do to much of that sort of thing
1079. (08:44:44) The_Mad_Pirate: Nobody concept cars like Syd Mead ... well , except Scott Robertson.
  1080. (08:44:45) TimeGentleman: %hat new logo's great!
  1081. (08:44:47) Rated_Marykate: I have a weakness for eye-candy graphics.

1083. (08:44:54) Sven_Q45: Promo poster? wish you can buy these...
1084. (08:45:15) TimeGentleman: Sven seems like physical merchandise gets all tied up in red tape

1086. (08:45:47) Cheeseness: I thought that there was a poster available

1092. (08:46:14) DFLeePetty: I don't think we are selling the posters
1093. (08:46:16) The_Mad_Pirate: I love how determined Manny is in this "1 year later" cutscenes
1094. (08:46:19) DFLeePetty: maybe in the future
1095. (08:46:26) liorean: Finished for this session?
1096. (08:46:26) Cheeseness: It helps reinforce that Copal must've had to work hard to keep him down
1097. (08:46:28) Syd: We're ending it here. Next week will be year 2! Let me know when the outro ends
1098. (08:46:30) flesk: That silhouette leaving the café Tim posted on Twitter. I never saw that while playing the game.
