Grammar: passive voice

form: [be] + past participle
- This is the general form for passive sentences, but “be” can be in different forms for different tenses.

Pasta was invented in China. It wasn’t invented in Italy.

Ice cream has been eaten for more than 2000 years. - present perfect (started in the past, continues)
A new subway station is being built near my house. - present continuous (in progress now)

Note: we do not use passive (with “be”) in perfect progressive tenses
	(“been being” sounds bad and we don’t like it)

We also use passive with modal verbs:
The Tokyo subway may be used by nine million people every day, but I’m not sure.
This food can be eaten without cooking.
Paper might have been invented in China, but I’m not sure.
They could have been killed, but luckly they survived.
