  1. Sometimes, when they were younger, Asgore and Gaster would climb a stone wall they probably weren't supposed to be on. There, they would share a loaf of bread. Two-thirds to Asgore and one-third to Gaster - an arrangement Gaster proposed because Asgore was growing faster and larger by the day, and Gaster wasn't. (Only logical, he'd said, with that tiny smile of his.) The two of them would look out at the hills and talk about what they'd been doing that day.
  2.
  3. One day, though, Gaster was sitting on the ground, cradling one of his arms and shaking.
  4.
  5. "Oh dear," Asgore said, kneeling to his level. "What's wrong?"
  6.
  7. "Training my healing," Gaster said, between sobs.
  8.
  9. "How is this training your healing?" Asgore asked.
  10.
  11. "Simple longbone fracture, aligned and splinted. Father said it was the easiest kind of break to fix, so I should be able to figure it out quickly. But I - I don't know how to -"
  12.
  13. "My neighbor has healing, I think they could -"
  14.
  15. "No!" Gaster yelled. Then, more slowly: "He said that if I used someone else's magic he'd break it again. I can't - I can't risk it."
  16.
  17. The bottom was dropping out of Asgore's reality. "Why would..."
  18.
  19. "F-father said that, because I don't have typical monster magic, normal magical training isn't good enough. I have to learn through experience."
  20.
  21. "But... can't you help with a free clinic or something?"
  22.
  23. Gaster said nothing, his tears having run dry in the interval between.
  24.
  25. "Ma told me it's easier to do for other people than for yourself."
  26.
  27. "Oh. Right." Gaster leaned back against the wall. "Of course there was a better way. Why didn't I think of that?"
  28.
  29. "Dunno."
  30.
  31. "So - um - what do I do now?"
  32.
  33. "You should talk to him about it. He's just trying to help you, right? I'm sure he'll be reasonable."
  34.
  35. "When he gets angry, he doesn't like listening to what anyone says."
  36.
  37. "Then maybe later. When he isn't angry."
  38.
  39. "But he gets angry so fast! How am I supposed to?"
  40.
  41. "...maybe when other people are there, so he has to be polite?"
  42.
  43. "I - don't know if that'll work -"
  44.
  45. "I need to go. Ma said she wanted me to help with the chickens." Asgore patted Gaster awkwardly on the shoulder, got up, and left.
  46.
  47. Gaster stopped coming to the wall, after that.
  48.
  49. For a very long time afterwards, Asgore couldn't figure out why.
