  1. Jade Cocoon - differences between demo and retail
  2. -------------------------------------------------
  3.
  4. TO DO:
  5. * one day compare NTSC demo and retail
  6. * compare regional versions
  7.
  8. * a demo of this game was included with Shadow Madness before the magazines got a demo. Is it the same demo? Or of an earlier build? Must find out.
  9.
  10. ## Euro Demo 53 (E) [SCED-01827] VS PAL (E) [SLES-02201] ##
  11.
  12. Main differences:
  13. * no save points
  14. * a lot of the dialogue and text is different, indicating different recording sessions
  15. * pressing Select brings up a prompt if you want to quit the demo; the Select button does nothing in the full game
  16. * the capture rank starts you off at Pupil, followed by Apprentice; you start off at Apprentice in the retail
  17. * dual shock not implement yet, which it is in the full game (can use left analog stick to run)
  18.
  19. Opening:
  20. * the demo displays text that tells you that it is a demo http://prntscr.com/858fdb
  21. * there is no backstory intro cutscene, it cuts to the part with the minions
  22. * the cutscene is a bit different than the final?
  23.
  24. Start Menu::
  25. * pressing Start takes you straight to the action
  26. * this means no Battle Stage / Arena
  27.
  28. Starting off:
  29. * you start off in Garais's house, skipping all the scenes leading up to entering the Beetle Forest
  30. * the Beetle Key is already obtained
  31. * you start off with a Arpatron and a Patalchu
  32. * you start off at Capture Level 3
  33. * you start off with 200 yan
  34. * you start off with 6 Mugwort Herbs; you only get 3 in the retail
  35. * you don't get Valerian Powder from Garai
  36. * you start off with a Leather Headband, which you don't in the retail
  37. * you only have 22 speed; you have 23 speed in the retail
  38.
  39. Map:
  40. * can only go to Garai's House and Gate
  41. * the Forest Gates is just called Gate in the demo
  42.
  43. Mahbu:
  44. * Mahbu's opening dialogue is a little different; "But watch out" rather than "But I'd watch out"
  45. * the prompt from Mahbu is 'Perform divine magic'; the prompt in the retail is 'Perform Nagi Magic'
  46. * the resulting dialogue from this prompt is different: she says "We better purify them right away." rather than "I'd better purify them."
  47. * the prayer said is different in places and lacks the echo voice
  48. * the dialogue after the prayer is different
  49.
  50. Merging:
  51. * you can't 'view form' the minion i.e. see a preview of what the merged minion is going to look like
  52. * the merging speech is different and lacks the echo voice
  53. * the ending dialogue is a little different
  54. * after merging, you get "Wanna try combining some more?" whereas the retail has "Wanna try merging some more?"
  55. * minions are referred to as monsters
  56. * the ending dialogue after closing the menu is different
  57.
  58. Pause menu:
  59. * you can't view the minion list
  60. * the Apprentice rank is called Pupil in the demo
  61.
  62. Koris:
  63. * Koris' intro speech is different:
  64. * The text box for his tutorial is different and the wording is different
  65. - demo: http://prntscr.com/8590d2
  66. - retail: http://prntscr.com/8590iy
  67. * the tutorials involving combat are missing, meaning
  68. - the tutorial for capturing an Arpatron is not there, since you already have one
  69. - the tutorial that gives you a mugwort herb is gone, so you can't do the exploit to get 20 of them
  70. * the ending speech is different
  71.
  72. Minions: (NOTE: need to double check this)
  73. * I don't think there are any Skawasps (Air elemental wasp minions)
  74. * I don't think there are any Skaeebs either (Air elemental demon minions)
  75. * I don't think there are any Patashs too (Fire elemental garden gnome minions)
  76. * I think there are Terfrayds (Earth elemental armoured lizard minions)
  77. * there might be Skwoots (Air elemental poisonous snake minions)
  78.
  79. Beetle Forest:
  80. * collecting the first tablet says the tablet "rests" at the "foot" of a rock. In the retail the textbox says it "leans" against the "base" of a rock
  81. * then it says "Knowledge (1)", rather than "Knowledge 1 picked up." (same with every other Knowledge tablet actually)
  82. * collecting the second tablet says the tablet remains "in one piece". In the retail the textbox says it remains "intact." (note the lack of full stop in the demo's textbox
  83. * the dialogue and voice of the Masked Boy is different
  84. * the game calls him Stranger rather than Masked Boy
  85. * the textbox for this battle calls him 'STRANGER', rather than 'MASKED BOY'
  86. * picking up the Aquazor says that the spear gives off "a strangely blue glow", rather than "an eerie and moist blue glow."
  87. * the Knowledge 3 tablet textbox also has different text
  88. * picking up the Beetle Warp Key says that it is "A necklace of jewels strung by thread is covered by the dirt" whereas the full retail game says "A jewel necklace lies partially buried in the ground."
  89. * the ending dialogue from Koris is different, and he implies getting the full version of the game. "It will take a few months before you are ready", "meet me back here this summer" to proceed.
  90. * the demo ends right after that last dialogue, bypassing the return to Garai
  91. * the demo ends with this screen http://prntscr.com/85k8wi
