- <orbit> if you're not renewing your hardware every 3 years, and constantly patching and re-evalutating your software, you're doing yourself a disservice. Microsoft has had the writing on the wall about their changing policies for a long time. businesses either need to come to terms with that or move to another OS.

- <oeuvre> k orbit mr. self proclaimed expert
- <m00se> IT is a pain in the ass everyone but pencilheads loathe in business
- <oeuvre> i will dump milions of money
- <orbit> oeuvre: and certianly not 4-5 yo servers, power usage alone makes it a waste
- <oeuvre> and then retrain people
- <oeuvre> besides
- <oeuvre> toss in an SSD in a 5 year old system.... and some RAM
- <oeuvre> more than likely it will fel like a brand new system.
- <orbit> that's fine for a home system.
- <ectospasm> orbit: but upfront costs scare many managers from making that decision, especially if they're in an equilibrium with the old equipment
- <oeuvre> even business systems too, not servers.
- <orbit> if you're buying it in a business, you would have been buying it with a 3 year support contract.
- <orbit> and that's due to the way taxation works.
- <Psyxerces> Yes - lets add SSD's and Ram to a fleet that we are trying to get funding to replace, and let them choose the cheap way out.
- <ectospasm> orbit: not necessarily
- <orbit> after 3 years, you've depreciated it
- <orbit> it's basically worthless as far as tax is concerned.
- <ectospasm> I had a boss who bought all of his equipment second hand off eBay
- <m00se> hospitals don't pay tax
- <orbit> and you're unliekly to get support from the hardware vendor.
- <ectospasm> Of course, 80 percent of it was shite, but I couldn't convince him of that.
- <oeuvre> orbit: you buy anything new, the second you use it, it depreciates
- <oeuvre> a new car, a new computer, clothes, etc.
- <orbit> i dont think you understand what i'm saying
- <oeuvre> oh i do
- <oeuvre> for tax purposes and such
- <oeuvre> and warranty, support etc.
- <Psyxerces> orbit: In an ideal world, where everyone listened to the people that maintained their ICT Fleet, then all servers workstations would be on a four year warranty / lease rollover.
- <orbit> have you done many IT procurements and worked with teh finance dept on that? :/
- <oeuvre> the amount of people who don't maintain their stuff... is oeuvre whelming
- <orbit> Psyxerces: every place i've workeed has done exactly that.
- <oeuvre> so realistically this 3 year update plan will never happen
- <oeuvre> in many places

- <orbit> and in the country i am
- <oeuvre> same here broseph
- <ectospasm> Only the largest and most languid organizations can have policies that match "the ideal"
- <Psyxerces> We get a computer, plan for replacement in 4 years once the warranty expires, and then you get cashflow issues - maybe next year.
- <Psyxerces> We try for a rolling lease, spreading the cost out, but then get govt funding that says no lease, so you have to buy.
- <tincan> friend worked at a print shop where the vinyl cutter was connected to a win 95 machine. plenty ofpeople dont update there stuff untill its way to late
- <orbit> ectospasm: poppycock
- <oeuvre> tincan: win 95 ftw
- <orbit> tincan: no arguments there, but that doesnt make it 'right'
- <ectospasm> You think 95% business have a well defined IT plan? Really?
- <tincan> orbit: im assuming it required some softwarefrom a company that doesnt exist any more
- <orbit> ectoplasm: no idea. never worked in regular business. butbusinesses that have IT as their core - i'd fucking hope so.

- <ectospasm> orbit: you didn't specify that
- <oeuvre> no one is going to change their opinions and just stick to their guns anyways
- <orbit> ectoplasm: *shrug* i can only relate *my* experiences. and if businesses outside that arent doing it - more fool them. cant imagine why they get taken to the cleaners by IT support groups.

- <Anastasius> tincan: Ya think?
