  1. <ectospasm> So... should I pour a glass of scotch, or just go to bed?
  2. <ectospasm> I've been up since 0353
  3. <tincan> litterally or figuratively?
  4. <Anastasius> Scotch. It's Friday.
  5. <ectospasm> True enough
  6. <ectospasm> But I can't remember what I have to do tomorrow
  7. <Anastasius> kevinf311-lap agrees.
  8. <kevinf311-lap> yep
  9. <ectospasm> I dunno if I'm supposed to distribute coats to the homeless
  10. <tincan> blarg
  11. <tincan> i was scrolled up
  12. <Anastasius> ectospasm: Is it still stupidly cold down there?
  13. <ectospasm> 40°F, stupidly cold for a Deep South Alabama boy.
  14. <Anastasius> That's bad enough.
  15. <ectospasm> The high tomorrow is supposed to be in the 70s though. Who knows?

  41. <ectospasm> Don't tell me you live in New Zealand, orbit?
  42. <orbit> no?
  43. <ectospasm> No you don't live in New Zealand, or no you won't tell me you do?

  79. <Anastasius> mmhmm.
  80. <ectospasm> OK
  81. <spreadsheet> mash is great
  82. <m00se> there was nothing comedic about it to me
  83. <ectospasm> I thought you were talking about the Avengers character Hawkeye for a second
  84. <spreadsheet> it was a great show
  85. <m00se> ok
  86. <Anastasius> Anyway, I still only watch The Blacklist for Spader. He's excellent.

  91. <m00se> that might be true in your case

  93. <Anastasius> I mean I get it, it just doesn't amuse me.
  94. <spreadsheet> oh
  95. <ectospasm> meh, I was an adult when Seinfeld was on. The only redeeming qualities of that show were Kramer and George
  96. <m00se> seinfield is hit or miss

  217. <oeuvre> anyways
  218. <orbit> Ana: maybe in shitty businesses with no IT
  219. <ectospasm> I think they saw the writing on the wall, and they planned another migration to Win7

  228. <orbit> if you're not renewing your hardware every 3 years, and constantly patching and re-evalutating your software, you're doing yourself a disservice. Microsoft has had the writing on the wall about their changing policies for a long time. businesses either need to come to terms with that or move to another OS.

  255. <witeshark> that's not the point
  256. <Psyxerces> I have several computers on win8.1, but until the majority fo the fleet supports 8.1, with 4-5 yo hardware there is no point in upgrading the 10% that do support it and getting a mixmatched fleet

  277. <m00se> IT is a pain in the ass everyone but pencilheads loathe in business
  278. <oeuvre> i will dump milions of money
  279. <orbit> oeuvre: and certianly not 4-5 yo servers, power usage alone makes it a waste
  280. <oeuvre> and then retrain people
  281. <oeuvre> besides
  282. <oeuvre> toss in an SSD in a 5 year old system.... and some RAM
  283. <oeuvre> more than likely it will fel like a brand new system.
  284. <orbit> that's fine for a home system.
  285. <ectospasm> orbit: but upfront costs scare many managers from making that decision, especially if they're in an equilibrium with the old equipment
  286. <oeuvre> even business systems too, not servers.
  287. <orbit> if you're buying it in a business, you would have been buying it with a 3 year support contract.
  288. <orbit> and that's due to the way taxation works.
  289. <Psyxerces> Yes - lets add SSD's and Ram to a fleet that we are trying to get funding to replace, and let them choose the cheap way out.
  290. <ectospasm> orbit: not necessarily
  291. <orbit> after 3 years, you've depreciated it
  292. <orbit> it's basically worthless as far as tax is concerned.
  293. <ectospasm> I had a boss who bought all of his equipment second hand off eBay
  294. <m00se> hospitals don't pay tax
  295. <orbit> and you're unliekly to get support from the hardware vendor.
  296. <ectospasm> Of course, 80 percent of it was shite, but I couldn't convince him of that.
  297. <oeuvre> orbit: you buy anything new, the second you use it, it depreciates
  298. <oeuvre> a new car, a new computer, clothes, etc.
  299. <orbit> i dont think you understand what i'm saying
  300. <oeuvre> oh i do
  301. <oeuvre> for tax purposes and such
  302. <oeuvre> and warranty, support etc.
  303. <Psyxerces> orbit: In an ideal world, where everyone listened to the people that maintained their ICT Fleet, then all servers workstations would be on a four year warranty / lease rollover.
  304. <orbit> have you done many IT procurements and worked with teh finance dept on that? :/
  305. <oeuvre> the amount of people who don't maintain their stuff... is oeuvre whelming
  306. <orbit> Psyxerces: every place i've workeed has done exactly that.
  307. <oeuvre> so realistically this 3 year update plan will never happen
  308. <oeuvre> in many places
  309. <Psyxerces> Yes - Business. Not education that is often scrimping for money everywhere.
  310. <orbit> more fool them.

  352. <Anastasius> tincan: That would end terribly, with frostbite.
  353. <ectospasm> I say,"We can get in a threesome: I take you, you take him, and he takes me!" I think she feigns offense at that, but I'm not entirely sure.
