  1. >It had been over a thousand years since your mother was banished by that witch.
  2. >She had sent you far away as she prepared for her final confrontation.
  3. >It had not gone well.
  4. >But you had been saved.
  5. >And you had lived.
  6. >At first you searched for a way to save your mother.
  7. >But it became obvious that you had not the power.
  8. >So you began searching out power.
  9. >But you had not the skill.
  10. >So you traveled.
  11. >You learned.
  12. >You grew.
  13. >As time went on the urgency to save your mother fell to the back of your mind.
  14. >You conquered.
  15. >You fell.
  16. >You loved.
  17. >You lost.
  18. >You discovered.
  19. >You forgot.
  20. >But you never forgot your mother.
  21. >Her image, her memory shaped you.
  22. >You sought to be as strong as she is.
  23. >As powerful as she was.
  24. >As intelligent as she had been.
  25. >But no matter how hard you tried, you could not measure up against someone who was not there.
  26. >But now you could fix that.
  27. >You heard rumor of the fearful Nightmare Moon had returned to Equestria.
  28. >The land you had forsaken so long ago.
  29. >Now you would return.
  30. >You could finally be with your mother again.
  31. >You alighted on her balcony.
  32. >The knowledge you had obtained from a peasant had been true.
  33. >The room was pitch black, but that didn't bother you.
  34. >Mother had given you that gift long ago.
  35. >The walls were coated in star charts.
  36. >Beautiful paintings sat on easels.
  37. >Instruments sat in random places.
  38. >Few knew how creative your mother had been.
  39. >But you had always knows.
  40. >For who else created the beauty that was the night?
  41. >You entered quietly.
  42. >There was no hesitation.
  43. >Not any longer.
  44. >Not when your mother was just before you.
  45. >Finally you could be together again.
  46. >You stop at the edge of the bed and stare at the mare that laid within.
  47. >At first you felt your hopes crashing down.
  48. >She was merely dark while your mother had been black.
  49. >But before your hopes gave way to despair you frown.
  50. >Her coat may be different but the facial structure is just as you remember.
  51. >It could be your mother. Merely in a new form.
  52. >You determined to find out.
  53. >You raised a limb and placed it on her throat.
  54. >And then pressed.
  55. >Her eyes flicked open, staring at the space above her in anger.
  56. >They weren't narrow as you remember but the anger burning forth was just as you recalled.
  57. >"Who dares?!"
  58. >Your hopes soared.
  59. >You leaned forward, putting your face within her line of sight.
  60. >You frown.
  61. >Her eyes widened.
  62. >Anger vanished.
  63. >Primal fear danced behind them.
  64. >You sigh.
  65. "You are not my mother."
  66. >You leave.
  67.
  68.
  69.
  70. >Luna remained paralyzed. Cold beneath the covers.
  71. >She didn't chase the specter as she normally would have done.
  72. >Something was different. The sight of that creature had driven a cold stake into her heart.
  73. >What it had said had driven her to agony.
  74. >But why?
  75. >Was it merely a night terror?
  76. >Or did it mean something more?
  77. >Why was it so painful to hear the words it said?
  78. >She wracked her mind, searching for memories of the creature, trying to find out why it had affected her so.
  79. >But she returned with nothing.
  80. >It was as if her memories of it had been sealed off.
  81. >She eventually stood out of bed, if only to prove she could.
  82. >A determination filled her.
  83. >She would find this creature and find out what place it had in her life.
  84. >She would find out why it affected her so.
  85. >She left.
