  1. A young woman sits at a desk littered with discarded papers, old cigarettes, and a half-eaten pastry. The woman, fair-skinned and blue-eyed types furiously at her typewriter. She jumps as the door to the office is violently wrenched open and a tall man in his late 30's stomps into the room.
  2.
  3. The man, with brown hair and striking green eyes strides over to the desk and shifts around to her side, opening one of the bottom drawers and producing a small service pistol and two phials. Vigors, deluded, but still quite potent. One is labeled "Houdini" and the other one "Telekinesis." As he holsters the pistol and pockets the two phials the young woman deftly snatches a small phial labeled "Winter Blast." before closing the drawer for the man.
  4.
  5. "Got a job tonight." The man says, pulling out a loose cigarette from his coat and producing a lighter from his pocket with his other hand.
  6.
  7. "It pay well?" She inquires, running her fingers through her long brown hair. Darker then the man's, but not by much.
  8.
  9. "Something like that."
  10.
  11. The woman grimaces slightly. "We're not a charity."
  12.
  13. "I've got a hunch that something big is going on."
  14.
  15. "With no paycheck." She sighs. "So, when do we begin?
  16.
  17. "Tonight, 9:30. And there's no 'we'." He replies, flicking the lighter shut abruptly as if to punctuate the statement.
  18.
  19. "Oh come on!" The woman exclaims indignantly.
  20.
  21. "You're going to sit this out, and I mean it." The man says, checking the antique clock hanging on the wall.
  22.
  23. The man leans in and places his hand on top of hers, forcing a smile. He smells of cigarette smoke and bad whiskey. Odd, he usually doesn't drink when he's on a case, the young woman thinks to herself.
  24.
  25. "Listen, things will pick up soon. We'll get a real case and everything will turn out fine." He says, withdrawing his hand. "Now, I need to get going."
  26.
  27. He makes it half way to the door before pausing and turning around. "And hey, we'll do something together soon. Not a case, but some real quality time together, it's been a while since we've done that hasn't it?"
  28.
  29. Smiling, the young woman nods her head as the man turns and exists the office. She sits in silence for several minutes before grabbing her purse and heading for the door herself. Yeah, it would be nice to spend some quality time together, she thought to herself. So why not start now? He was acting strange, and she wanted to get to the bottom of it.
  30.
  31. The young woman eyes the door on the way out. 'Booker DeWitt: Investigations into matters both public & private.' He really should get around to adding 'Elizabeth DeWitt' to that sign. She kind of liked the sound of that, 'Booker and Elizabeth DeWitt: Investigations into matters both public & private.' A father/daughter detective duo, like something out of a crime serial.
