- Kayda is a Native American from the NAN, her family belonging to the Lakota. She's always been proud of her heritage, but it has never been a big part of her life - at least until an event changed everything for her. When she was fifteen, living with her parents in the country, she started having strange, reoccurring dreams about a beautiful Lakota woman sitting with a white buffalo calf. Not knowing why, she felt there was just something significant about the dream, even as it kept invading her nightly ritual day after day. She'd tried approaching the woman or the buffalo calf, or calling out to them, but without success. But one night, the Lakota woman raised her head and smiled at her, and said,"Taŋyáŋ yahí Wihakayda." Kayda was scared at first, but she sat with the woman and the buffalo calf, suddenly able to approach, and they conversed in her dreams. She came to know that the woman was Wakan Tanka, the Great Spirit, and she had chosen her to bring her teachings into a new age, so that the People could remember what had been forgotten and become strong again. The white buffalo, Tatanka, was the spirit of the majestic buffalo and imparted his own wisdom as well.
- And so it was that Kayda continued to learn from Wakan Tanka, and Tatanka, as well as many other animal spirits while in the dream. She learned that she could dreamwalk, as the shamans do, intuitively and this is how she could communicate and interact with the spirits her people held sacred. Wakan Tanka taught her of medicine, and healing, as well as shaman magic. She also taught her of songs, and dances, and crafts considered archaic now, such as sewing hide with sinew or crafting herbal tea over the campfire. The traditions and ways of the Lakota were taught to Kayda, so that she would be ready one day to be a great leader for the People. The thought of so much responsibility was enormously daunting to the teenager, but she tried her best to absorb the lessons from Wakan Tanka, Tatanka, and the animal spirits about various virtues such as patience, temperance, prudence, etc.
