- Known under many different names such as the Chicago Typewriter, Annihilator, Tommy Gun and Trench Sweeper, The Thompson submachine gun was widely favoured by police, criminals, soldiers and civilians. The gun became widely famous, or infamous depending on which viewpoint you took, by it's use by bootleggers and the Mafia during the time of Prohibition in the US. When World War 2 started, many of these "gangster guns" were given to countries as part of the the Lend Lease program.
