- ANCIENT UROBOS
- Long ago, when the land was still young, and the reach of man was still unfurling in their paleolithic cradle; there existed a far off land. In this land, flora and fauna found nowhere else on the planet thrived and faded thanks to the nurturing touch of two ancient guardians. These guardians, one loving and cultivating, the other hasty and vengeful, maintained the circle of life in this far off land. The loving and cultivating guardian, Xochi, traveled the land and used her powers to inspire life in everything and anything. For so great was her love of life that she defended her creations and those creations of others to a fault, Xochi could not stop her creations from overwhelming one another. The other guardian, an otherworldly titan named Quetzar had no such qualms to reaping what Xochi had sown. Quetzar would carefully maintain the balance of life with little hesitancy to snuffing out upstart and potentially destructive forms of life. The two Guardians maintained a cycle of life and death in the far off region for countless eons. And for countless eons, the cycle repeated itself unbroken by anything or anyone.
- As time passed, the Guardian of Life Xochi began to understand more of her realm. The region unnaturally attracted debris from space, specifically gigantic asteroids that destroyed everything upon impact. As the eons passed, Xochi began to tire of spending so much time rejuvenating the region from every cataclysm. To simply spend so much effort on her own took its toll on the Guardian of Life. While the Guardian of the Region Quetzar took much delight in the destruction, it still saw Xochi as its contemporary and friend. For without one another, they were unfulfilled. Quetzar, in its boundless wisdom, suggested to Xochi that she imbibe three wards to defend the region in her absence in the wake of every cataclysm. “Destruction is easy to do by one-self” Quetzar postured, “but regrowth and cultivation require the assistance and cooperation of many. You cannot do this alone.” And such it was determined that Xochi required three aides to guide the region towards regrowth. The first ward Xochi formed from the rich waters of the region. To protect the sanctity of the region’s water and the denizens within, Yacuma came alive with Xochi’s touch. Next, Xochi gathered the sky and land and tasked them to defend one another and the riches within. Machima came alive, born from the elements of above and below. Lastly, Xochi saw that while the land, air, and waters were protected in her stead, those that lived in the land, air, and waters were still threatened and with nothing to protect them. Thus, Xochi gathered the green and the living and tasked them to defend one another and all others that called the land, air, and waters home. While Machima and Yacuma were also tasked to defend life, Patama was given the most important ward of all: life. For this, Xochi gave Patama the most gifts, and strengths. And so, Patama, Yacuma, and Machima wandered the region aiding Xochi where they saw fit. Using their guardian-imbibed powers and a unique mystical core, the spirits, while not as cultivating or destructive as the Guardians, kept the cycle in a state of renewal. And for countless eons more, the cycle of life and death repeated itself over many times more.
- And then, one day, everything changed. Mysterious creatures appeared on the shores of this ancient region, creatures neither Xochi nor Quetzar could have ever imagined as existing. Humans had found the region. Finding the creatures to be living, Xochi quickly took their existence under her ward. Quetzar, seeing the creative nature of early man, took them under its wing and gave them gifts to assist in their development. For Quetzar, an opportunity had arisen. While the Guardian of the Region, Quetzar could only destroy. And even in those instances where destruction bestowed creation, Quetzar felt emptiness inside. Xochi treated every living thing as its own child, yet Quetzar remained alone. The task of destruction was a thankless and dirty task that the living things of the region despised Quetzar for. In the humans, Quetzar saw the chance to make the humans its own “children”. As the Spirit Trio and Guardians of the Region became idols for worship to the newcomers. Seizing this opportunity, Quetzar taught the humans construction, mining, earthworks, architecture, and art. Using itself as a model, Quetzar allowed the humans to model their artistic and architectural style after the runes and patterns on Quetzars ethereal wings and body. The people flourished and spread and Quetzar found itself the center of their worship circles. For Quetzar, its entire mission had found validation, and the emptiness it felt in its heart had faded away.
- The humans, meanwhile, continued to spread from their ancient landing spot on the region (which they had named Urobos, a word from their language which meant home) and became as diverse as the lands they occupied. The Urobosians created massive temples and stone workings using the knowledge that Quetzar granted them. The greatest culmination of their efforts resulted in a massive city dedicated to worship of Quetzar. Utilizing everything that Quetzar taught them, the Urobosians displayed masterful metallurgy, architecture, use of water, and art unlike anything the world had previously seen. Upon completion of the metropolitan offering to Quetzar, the Urobosians presented a golden idol, the zenith of their abilities as creators and earth shapers, to their Guardian, Quetzar. In a moment of sheer joy, at the city built for Quetzar at the location of the first landing, Quetzar called upon its ancient friend Xochi to grant life to the idol as a gift to the Urobosians. And thus, at the height of the Ancient Urobosian Culture, Xotec was born.
- Upon creation, Xotec found itself with interesting powers. The gems that the Urobosians used in its creations had warped the energy Xochi used to create it and had granted Xotec the power to turn things into solid gold. The Ancient Urobosians quickly utilized this power for their own wealth. In the wake of newfound wealth, Urobosian civilization expanded at exponential rates, usurping forests and jungles for farmland, harvesting rivers for irrigation, dumping waste into the air and seas, and hunting the lands and seas to feed their growing mouths. While Quetzar looked upon his children’s flourishing as a testament to its own intervention, Xochi and the Spirits Three grew increasingly disturbed at how destructive the Urobosian culture had become towards the region. The land, the sea, the sky, and the living all cried out at the relentlessness of the humans. Even Xochi grew worried as the land she protected grew more and more threatened by the voracious expansion of the Urobosians. When the Spirits and Xochi approached Quetzar about their fears, Quetzar merely shrugged them off as unwarranted. The Urobosians, in the eyes of the paternal Quetzar, could do no wrong. Disenchanted, Xochi and the Spirits returned to their realms to stem the effects of the Urobosians actions.
- Meanwhile, the Urobosians had begun to argue over how best to utilize Xotec. All of this was overwhelming for the newly created idol pokemon, and it merely went along with what the humans said out of curiosity for their actions and ignorance of their intentions. As the decades passed, the arguments grew and fighting began over Xotec. Many tribes and cultures splintered off from the High Urobosian culture and began to adopt their own traditions and styles. Amidst the fighting, Xochi and the Spirit Trio reached out to these splinter groups to rectify the error of Urobosian ways. These groups learned to live in harmony with the ecosystem, building great cities in the trees, amongst the lakes and rivers, in the caves and cenotes, and erecting grandiose temples for Patama, Yacuma, and Machima. For Patama, a temple deep in the jungle was built so that Patama may always have a home surrounded by life. For Machima, a temple was built deep in the desert sands, open air, yet still in the earth, so that Machima can always be with the earth and sky. For Yacuma, a temple was built deep beneath the waves so that Yacuma could always be surrounded by water. While the fighting amongst the humans escalated, so too did the accomplishments that the natives achieved.
- A JOURNEY UNDERTAKEN
- As the years passed and the Urobosians continued to fight one another over Xotec, Quetzar began to look at the humans that had left the ancient city to see how they fared. Quetzar discovered that the humans had not only taken the gifts that he had given them, but they had put them to use to glorify the Spirits as well. Yet, the other tribes did not fight as the Urobosian culture fought. This stymied Quetzar.
- To Quetzar, humans were simple creatures that desired to play a role in something larger than their individual selves. This is why they worshiped the Guardians and Spirits of the Region. But why did these humans not fight as his Urobosians fight? Quetzar, consulted the wisest creatures of the region to ascertain why this was.
- Quetzar first traveled to the jungles in its quest. There, it met a Forthorn hiding in the woods from humans. Quetzar asked Forthorn why it hid in the forests when these humans were kind unlike the Urobosians. The Forthorn replied, “Oh Great Quetzar! I hide from the humans not because of their kindness or malice, but because they cannot accept anything that is different. I am not like them and they would see me as a monster. I hide because I fear their displeasure.” Quetzar, furtive in thought, thanked the Forthorn for its response and departed to seek more answers.
- Next, Quetzar traveled to the marshes and deltas of Urobos. There, Quetzar found a Cahokisect building a mound for the inhabitants of a nearby city. Quetzar asked the Cahokisect what it was doing and the Jewel Scarab Pokemon replied, “I am making burial mounds for the humans Great Quetzar. The humans, though not immortal like Yourself, have great respect for the fallen. Sometimes, I fear they have more respect for the dead than the living. So I make them great mounds to honor their deceased so that they may always remember those they have lost.” Quetzar, furtive in thought, thanked the Cahokisect for its response and departed to seek more answers.
- Following the deltas and marshes of Urobos, Quetzar found itself near a lake in the middle of the region. The lake had a small, but active community that lived on an island in the lakes center. Around the edges of the lake, Quetzar found a mangrove swamp. In the swamp, Quetzar found a baby Cardinite in an empty nest amongst the roots of the mangrove trees. Quetzar asked the Cardinite why it hid so low amongst the roots of the mangrove trees despite the roots being near water, a hazard for the Baby Tinder Pokemon. The Cardinite replied, “Great Quetzar! I wish to be like the humans! They make homes everywhere and find ways to survive in places they shouldn’t. The humans are strong, and when I grow up, I wish to be strong like them!” Quetzar, furtive in thought, thanked the Cardinite for its response and once again, departed to seek more answers.
- A great storm had reached Urobos and had traveled up the river that Quetzar was following. To avoid being caught in the storm, Quetzar traveled deep inland to avoid the great winds and rains of the tempest. While traveling inland, Quetzar discovered more of what the Cardinite had said to be true. Quetzar found humans living amongst the jungles, the marshes, lakes, and even in the deserts and cliffs of Southeastern Urobos. Only the hardiest of creatures could survive amidst the fearsome sands and unrelenting heat of the Mar de Arena. Soon, Quetzar arrived near at the coast of the region. In the Great Urobos Bay, Quetzar found that the humans had made a life alongside the sheer cliffs of the bay. In the middle of the bay, Quetzar spotted the Great Spire. From the top of the Great Spire, one could see all of Urobos. The humans had even gone to lengths to build a shrine there to honor the Guardians and the Spirits of Urobos. While unoccupied by humans, upon further inspection, Quetzar noticed a lone Monkezuma and Gnuru travelling side-by-side up the steps of the Great Spire. Normally enemies, Quetzar approached the pair, asking why they would travel together despite being sworn enemies. Monkezuma replied first, “Once, Gnuru and I had fought over everything. But we both agreed that the cliffs were our home. I wanted the minerals of the cliff for myself, while Gnuru wished for the rocks to become wiser.” The Gnuru jumped in next. “The cliffs were our home. When we learned that the humans had found our home and wished to take the minerals for themselves, we knew we had to leave. While I may be wiser than Monkezuma, and Monkezuma stronger than me, we both knew that once a human desires something, they will stop at nothing until they have obtained it.” “In this case, Great Quetzar, the humans desired the same minerals Gnuru and I fought over. While we may fight over who gets the rocks, we have compromised in the past. These humans cannot know compromise. Our lives are not worth a few petty rocks. So this Monkezuma and Gnuru travel to the top of the Great Spire, where humans have already taken, so that we may live in peace.” Quetzar, furtive in thought, thanked the two weary travelers, and continued along its path.
- The encounter at the Great Spire troubled Quetzar. Surely his children were above such petty squabbles! To fight to the death over things as childish as differences and minerals was not worth the trouble it caused. Yet, Quetzar still believed that the answers he needed were beyond the horizon. So Quetzar traveled north along the coast. Soon, Quetzar reached where the river met the sea. Quetzar could see that humans had begun to build homes in the caves and cenotes along the coast here. Quetzar watched the humans build for a while. He noted how they turned the land into their homes, harnessing the bioluminescence of Lumishrooms to light the darkness. In this, Quetzar saw the ingenuity that led it to appreciate humans in the first place. While lost in thought, a lone Howlequin walked up next to Quetzar. “Great Quetzar, have you come to watch the humans as well?” “Yes Howlequin. I am traveling across these lands to find answers. The humans puzzle me, but I must know more about why the do the things they do.” The Howlequin sat silent, contemplating Quetzars journey. “Great Quetzar, the humans value entertainment and diversion from the doldrums of life. As the Guardian of the Region, surely you know how bleak existence can be! These humans cherish living and taking as much from life as possible. Even here, this settlement has drawn many performers and entertainers who wish to make the masses smile. To the humans, taking the mind off of hardship is worth much more than bread.” Quetzar, enlightened by the response of the Howlequin, thanked the Jester Pokemon and continued along its path.
- Traveling further along the coast, Quetzar began to see what used to be a massive forest had been leveled for grassland. The humans had turned the land into pasture for their livestock. Was this what the Spirits had meant? Where the humans out of control? Quetzar pushed this thought out of its mind. Not all humans can be represented by the actions of a few. Soon, Quetzar reached the golden beaches of Urobos. A sight to behold, the beaches were long considered the standard for paradise amongst the inhabitants of the region. Quetzar found humans had begun building settlements along the beaches, tearing up the land in the process. Enraged at seeing this beauty spoiled, Quetzar flew into a rage. How could the humans ruin this pristine land? This land was not theirs to do as they saw fit! A nearby Bouwee saw Quetzar working itself up into a rage. The Bouwee called out to Quetzar, “Great Quetzar! You must not let the actions of the humans anger you so!” Quetzar, taken back by the courage of the tiny bug pokemon, flew closer so that the bug pokemon could speak its peace. “Great Quetzar, at first, when I saw the beaches defiled, I too was angry and filled with rage like yourself! However, like yourself, I knew that with my power I would do more harm than good. As I waited, and calmed down, Great Quetzar, I was proved wrong!” Quetzar quietly laughed at the innocence and confidence this little pokemon had. It was inspiring, so Quetzar continued to listen. “The humans, while they had ruined the beaches, they also maintained the beaches as well! They invited humans from far and wide to see the beauty! While they had ruined the beaches, they also saved them for others. Great Quetzar you must leave these humans alone! The humans merely are misguided! They can change!” Quetzar, deep in thought, decided to listen to the Bouwee. The humans needed to remember that they were tenants of this land, not the owners. Quetzar thanked the Bouwee and continued along its path.
- Quetzar decided that it was time to return to the city that the Urobosians made. The humans needed to be reminded that they were not the owners or the land and that their actions must account for something. Too much abuse had taken place and Xochi and the Spirits were right. While traveling west, Quetzar had spotted a group of Magnitogre digging deep into the mountains. This worried Quetzar as normally Magnitogre were solitary creatures that only rarely would be seen with more than three to a group. Quetzar approached a Magnitogre chewing deep into the mountainside and asked the Magnetic Mountain pokemon what it and its comrades were doing. The Magnitogre replied, “Great Quetzar, the humans ask us to mine rare minerals for them to use in their wars. While they do feed us, the work is tiring and we miss our homes. The humans make us do this with no end in sight. We would fight back, but the humans are too strong and have pokemon that fight with them. I miss my tunnels deep in the mountains.” Quetzar was alarmed at what it had heard. Quetzar knew that the Urobosians had fought amongst one another over Xotec, but never did Quetzar imagine that pokemon would become involved in the fights. Freeing the Magnitogre from their bonds, Quetzar moved with much haste towards its destination.
- Nearly a year had passed since Quetzar embarked upon its journey for answers. In that year, Quetzar had learned much about the humans and how they continuously took and cared little for life itself. But Quetzar still did not understand why the humans did what they did. As it was late in the year, a massive snowstorm had dumped large amounts of snow on the mountains. Fierce winds blew between the peaks and travel became difficult for Quetzar. Rather than fight nature, Quetzar decided to await the end of the snow storm before leaving for the Urobosian City. While resting in a cave, Quetzar awoke to a strange creature approaching from the entrance to the cave. The creature had the antlers of a Buckston, the claws of an Aguanaut, the face of a Hurricanine, but the body of a human. Quetzar could not fathom what this creature was. “Oh Great Quetzar do not be alarmed! It is I, Little Wendingo! Only now I have grown and am the mighty Carnibal!” Quetzar had never heard of Carnibal before. Perhaps this was another human action? “Great Quetzar, I see you deep in thought. I know how rare us Carnibal are. I am one of the first of my kind actually! For years I watched the humans and how they made everything they say theirs. It filled in me a desire to be stronger and to take more for myself! After many battles and growing stronger, I became Carnibal! I am strong and fast and walk on two legs, like humans!” Quetzar could not believe what was unfurling before its eyes. Is this the power of humans? Is this their influence? “Great Quetzar, I must warn you. Since this new form, I am always hungry both for food and for power. No matter how much I eat or train, I still want more!” Epiphany! Suddenly Quetzar understood what drove the humans. This empty hunger! The humans had tasted power and wealth and needed more! Suddenly the solution to Carnibals problems became clear. “Little Carnibal, as a Wendingo you traveled the snowy wastes and helped those caught by storms. You had purpose in your existence and it was fulfilling. Your hunger is not of the body in origin, but in the soul. When you gave up your purpose to further yourself, you lost yourself and gained a hunger to return to that meaningfulness. Go back to what you were and you will find that you will be hungry no more.” Carnibal thanked Quetzar and left the cave. Not long after, the storm subsided and Quetzar found its path to the Urobosian City clear. In addition, Quetzar understood what must be done to rectify the humans transgressions. Once, Quetzar had a purpose of its own. By forgetting its purpose, Quetzar allowed the cycle to fall out of balance. The humans had become a problem, an infestation in the body and soul of this region. To save the land, Quetzar needed to take out the problem that allowed the humans to escalate. And thus, Quetzar realized that a poor pokemon would have to suffer for the wrongs that all of the humans had wrought. Xotec would have to be destroyed.
- A GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY
- Upon reaching the High Urobosian Culture City, Quetzar called the leaders of the peoples of the land together to tell them of what it had seen. Quetzar spoke of the wrongs that the humans had wrought upon one another, upon the land, and upon the creatures that called the land home. The humans stood silent, hesitant to accept their actions. Quetzar continued to tell them of how it learned of humans and their ways. Furthermore, the humans had misused the gifts it had given them, Xotec the most of all. As a result, Quetzar was going to take away the Golden Idol Pokemon from them for good. Its power was too much for the humans to have and would only be misused. The human leaders grew enraged. How could Quetzar just take Xotec away from them? They who worshipped Quetzar, had EARNED the right to use Xotec for their own gains. Quetzar warned the human leaders, that if any attempt to reclaim Xotec occurred, all humans would suffer the same fate. The human leaders returned to their homes, and Quetzar took Xotec to its chamber in the High Urobosian City. There, Xotec asked many questions of Quetzar, as the inquisitive pokemon did. Quetzar learned much about the humans from Xotec after the idol pokemon spent so much time with them. As Quetzar listened, it grew more and more secure in its decision to remove Xotec from the humans. Sadly, Quetzars decision did not sit as well with the human leaders. The tribes of Urobos had come together to reobtain Xotec from Quetzar. They had built marvelous wonders and had mastered everything that Quetzar had taught them. They had surpassed Quetzar in their eyes, and nothing would stop them from getting what they wanted. Raising massive armies, the combined peoples of Urobos laid siege to the High Urobosian City. Quetzar, enraged at this defiance, realized that these humans had forgotten why they had once worshipped Quetzar and the others of this region. Quetzar swooped over the armies and utterly devastated them. The humans retreated, but Quetzar followed. Where the humans ran, Quetzar followed. Where Quetzar followed, destruction followed in the wake. Xochi and the Spirit Trio watched as the cycle fulfilled itself, but something about the ruthlessness with which Quetzar pursued the humans worried Xochi. Never had Quetzar been so willing to eradicate and devastate. Regardless, Xochi decided to let her friend and contemporary fulfill its duty as the Guardian of the Region.
- As the days turned to weeks, and the weeks to months, the humans quickly found themselves facing extinction in Urobos. Even those who had not fought to take Xotec from Quetzar discovered that Quetzars wrath applied to them as well. In time, the few humans left were dispersed and losing hope. They had failed Quetzar and misused the gifts it had granted them. They had grown full of folly in their strength and influence. But to face extinction because of the mistakes of others? The remaining humans felt powerless in the face of death. By now, Xochi had grown increasingly worried for the fate of the humans. While Xochi and her wards Patama, Yacuma, and Machima were most affected by the humans actions, and while they had initially brought attention to Quetzar about the misdeeds of the humans, humanity still counted as life. And life fell under the protection of the Spirit Trio and Xochi. Feeling a responsibility to the humans, Xochi approached Quetzar to try to sway Quetzar from its campaign. But Xochi could not sway the stone-hearted Quetzar from its current path. Quetzar considered the humans its children, and they had betrayed Quetzar. Not only that, but the humans had gone against Quetzars own directive as the Guardian of the Region. The two things alone warranted a response from Quetzar and Xochi felt compelled to save the region. For in Quetzars rampage, the region had begun to fall ill to a sickness. The unparalleled devastation was throwing the ecosystem off balance and the threat of ecosystem failure weighed heavy on Xochis mind. Her Spirits could fight the encroaching wasteland, but they were fighting the avatar of destruction, the polar opposite and powerful equal to the avatar of life. The destruction could only be slowed, not stopped. Only defeating Quetzar could restore the cycle and the land. As Xochi meditated more and more on this, she realized that, as she was unable to destroy, she would be unable to directly defeat Quetzar. Relieved that she would not have to fight her longtime friend, Xochi realized that instead, the monumental task of defeating Quetzar would fall to the denizens of her realm. The humans and pokemon of the region would need to defeat Quetzar. But how could mere mortals defeat a god?
- HOPE
- For the remaining humans, life was a struggle to find food, evade Quetzar, and find a way to fight back. Driven to extremes, the population of the humans had dropped from millions at the peak, to mere thousands now. The few survivors had been pursued to Inner Urobos by Quetzar. Cornered by the Guardian of the Region, the remaining humans had resigned their fate, save but for a few young individuals. Raised during the 15 year Exodus from Urobos, these survivors had lived their entire lives on the run from Quetzar. Witness to atrocities, these kids had enough running. They got together in the deep of the night, when all things appeared bleakest, and decided that they needed a symbol. A symbol to Quetzar that they were not weak and terrible, a symbol to show that they could control their ambitions, and a symbol that they others could stand behind as a guardian. The twelve children of Urobos put their heads together and collaborated unlike anything they ever did before. One child suggested something involving fire. Long had fire been out of control in this world. Maybe if Quetzar could see them master a tough element then maybe he would leave them alone. Another child suggested taking it one step further. “What about a furnace? Furnaces can do lots of things, like us! They can keep people warm in the winter, they can be used in a forge, they can even make smores!” Then the eldest of the children stepped forward. “The symbol we need must be something that encompasses all of us. Humans and Pokemon. Quetzar threatens all of us. It should be powered by a furnace, like a steel pokemon, but look like a human. If we can show that we can work together with pokemon, and put our talents to good use, maybe then Quetzar will relent and we can live our lives free from terror!” The other children roared in approval. So too did the few pokemon with them. So through the night, the children and pokemon collected scrap to build their symbol. It would have flowing fire and a furnace at the core. It would have human hands to interact with the tools and the environment, but a pokemon shape to defend all life. Finally, before dawn broke, the children had completed their symbol. The eldest child lit the furnace, placed the symbol near the entrance to the cave, and led the children back to their families before the parents could awaken. The y had snuck out after all.
- Unbeknownst to the children, Xochi had been watching the group of human survivors and their pokemon friends the entire time. Moved by the childrens act of courage and innovation, Xochi decided to grant a gift to the human survivors. It would give their symbol life. Xochi snuffed the flame in the furnace of the symbol, then blew a special flame into the furnace to reignite the fire. As the symbol shuddered to life, Xochi knew that things had changed. Eronze was born.
- As the humans awoke, screams and terror erupted from the survivors as they discovered the silent automaton standing in the middle of their encampment. What did it want? What was it? Was it there to kill them? Eronze merely stood still, waiting to see its creators. As the children awoke from sleep, they individually became curious as to the commotion occurring outside their tents. Upon seeing its creators, Eronze immediately came to life and approached them with vigor and excitement. It knew very little in life. But, one thing it did know was that it had a purpose. It was to serve these children and protect them at all costs. The parents of the children were amazed at this reaction, and all were incredibly curious as to how this symbol made during the night had come to life. The children said they had lit a fire in the furnace, but when the eldest noticed the different color flames emanating from the golems core, suddenly the origin had became clear. The humans had received a gift from a Guardian, and it was their duty to use that gift to its fullest. They had failed with Quetzar, they would not fail again. The children climbed aboard Eronze as they went out with the remaining warriors and pokemon to meet Quetzar in battle. If they were to fall, they would fall meeting their problems, not running away. And as the battle raged on, Eronze proved to be the balancing force for the humans. Quetzar was taken back by its strength. How could a human creation be so powerful? With much shame, Quetzar retreated and the humans had postponed extinction for another day.
- As the tide turned against Quetzar, so too did the environment. As Quetzars influence began to subside with every human victory over it, the Spirit Trio were able to rejuvenate more and more of the environment. More and more of the land responded to the regenerative touch of the Spirit Trio. By the time the humans, their pokemon allies, and Eronze had pushed Quetzar back to the High Urobosian City, the entire region had found new life. Trees were taking root to form vast forests, pure waters flowed from the glacial springs high up on the mountains to the arid wastelands below, and even life had managed to spring back up in the endless Mar de Arena. The region had come full circle.
- Even though the region experienced regrowth and life was returning to normal for those not fighting Quetzar, and even though Quetzar had been pushed back to the only place on the landmass it could remain, the situation for the humans and their allies did not share the same optimistic outlook. Progress had been ground to a standstill as Quetzar had found followers still loyal to its cause in the High Urobosian City. Whilst the rebellious humans and their allies deemed the followers as cultists encouraging an apocalyptic future, the cultists managed to balance the scales in the uprising. The city once considered the jewel or Urobos civilization, filled with architectural wonders unlike any ever seen, art as masterful as ever there was, and technology far ahead of its time, had become a battleground between the two parties. Worse, the war had reached an impasse where neither side could strike a definitive blow against the other.
- Both sides schemed of ways to defeat the other. The cultists, envious of their rebellious counterparts and their Eronze, plotted to create their own natural automaton to battle for them. Working with the technological wonders of their time, the cultists devised to create a golem of their own off of the design of Eronze. Substituting a coal-based engine for the primitive furnace of the radicals, the cultists built a golem of their own. Upon finishing construction of their golem, they dubbed it Erion. However, the major obstacle of breathing life into the golem remained an issue. How had the rebels done it? How did they grant life unto Eronze? If cave-dwellers and farmers could create a monster strong enough to challenge Quetzar, then surely the superior Urobosian minds could form something stronger! And so, the cultists worked endless nights and days to power their creation. Finally settling on diverting the power from the city (hydraulic-based, early coal/steam), the cultists gambled on powering their golem long enough to avert the attention of not only the rebels, but from Quetzar as well. Quetzar barely allowed the cultists existence, it would not stand for another being that could challenge its power to come into existence. As the switches were flipped, power coursed through the golem. However, due to the improper workings of the cultists, and the lack of Xochi’s touch, the golem became deformed. Instead of clean steam, dark smog choked the atmosphere where it walked. Rust had already began to overtake the steel body of the automaton, as if the very nature of its creation corroded its every fiber. The creature, upon being infused with life, immediately recognized its mission to defend its creators, but began to doubt its own existence as it viewed the looks of failure and disappointment on its creators faces. How could it have failed if it had just been born? Was it disgusting? Did it offend them somehow? And it was then that the golem Erion knew what it must do. Erion destroyed the workshop it was born in and ran far away from the High Urobosian City. It fled deep into the mountains, deep underground, where it fashioned a place of exile from itself. Disgusted with its power and failing its creator, Erion slumbered, encumbered with nightmares and misgivings.
- Simultaneous to the machinations of the cultists, the resisting humans and their allies plotted to overtake Quetzar and the cultists. Waiting for the perfect moment to strike and relying on guerrilla tactics, the remaining humans managed to learn of a massive secret project that the cultists were working on. Knowing it involved power, the resistance triggered the steam engines and waterworks to overload, shorting the project and leaving an opening for attack. On the night of Erions creation, the resistance struck at Quetzar. Being taken by surprise by the combined might of the resisting humans and Eronze, Quetzar called out for its cultist allies, those last children that it could share some pride in. And as it fought off the attackers, it waited for its children to come. And waited. And waited. And as the cultists, embroiled in creating Erion, did not arrive, Quetzar began to lose hope. It had relied on its children, sparing them and offering a second chance for rebelling in the first place, but this betrayal would be dealt with swiftly and sharply. After finishing the rebellion here and now, it would go and destroy its children for betraying it twice over. Unfortunately for Quetzar, as it fled the battle to search for its human allies, the cultists had failed in successfully creating Erion. Those few who were not present at Erions creating were scattered amongst the city, defending their homes and families from scattered bands of rebels and scavengers. The rest had died in the ensuing chaos following Erions flight from the city. Quetzar could not defeat them so scattered out, not with the rebel humans still chasing it and Eronze in hot pursuit. Doubling back to its temple, Quetzar awaited for the rebels to engage it in battle. It had failed its duty as Guardian of the Region. It had failed to foresee the humans arrogance. It had failed to raise its children the correct way, to look past selfishness, greed, and petty squabbles. And most importantly, it had failed to heed the advice and warnings of its friend Xochi. A coldness and emptiness began to envelop Quetzar. The cosmic wings and ethereal nature of its body began to cool, forming stony armor over its body. Quetzar was losing the will to fight, but more importantly, the will to exist. Unbeknownst to Quetzar, Xotec, the golden idol pokemon that Quetzar created ages ago for the Urobosian peoples, watched as Quetzar changed forms. Seeing Quetzar in such pain, Xotec used some of its power to take one of the gems that had shrugged off of Quetzar as it changed forms to turn it into gold. While Xotec was not as powerful as Xochi or Quetzar or Machima, Patama, and Yacuma, it did hold power over gold and its creations. This would awaken Quetzar, this would bring back the only thing that ever looked after Xotec, this would bring back some happiness to the lands. Imbibing the golden gem with its powers, Xotec moved towards the slumbering Quetzar. Shedding its ethereal form had taken much energy from the Guardian of the Region. However, before Xotec could reawaken Quetzar, the humans and Eronze had entered the temple. Xotec took the golden gem and hid while the humans and Eronze debated what to do now that Quetzar was no longer an issue in the region. The humans prayed to Xochi and the Spirits of what to do now that Quetzar slumbered. Believing Quetzar to be defeated, Xochi decided that it would be best to lock Quetzar away from the world until the time had come for the cycle to begin again. Should Quetzar ever be needed, it would take the decision of all three Spirits and with Xochis approval to awaken Quetzar. As the group left the temple, Quetzar (and Xotec who still hid, waiting for the humans to leave), was locked away in its chambers. The temple was sealed by Xochi who had the three spirits use their power cores to lock the impenetrable door. Only in the presence of the three energy cores would the door open once more.
- And thus, the Ancient Urobosian War had ended. Peace had come to the region. After the war, the few citizens still living in the High Urobosian City attempted to eke out a living amongst the ruins of the once great metropolis. But life was difficult trying to live amongst rubble and ruin. Over time, the remaining residents left the city, noticing that a gold hue began to envelop the temple from afar. Seemingly increasing daily, the few remaining humans living in the city avoided the temple for fear of awakening Quetzar. And thus, as the city turned empty, the golden hue creeped farther and farther from the temples center. Long after the last human had left, Xotec had managed to create little exits and entrances out of the temple on its own. It noted the lack of humans or pokemon around the city and how a golden sheen had encircled the temple itself. Had it done this? Was it turning things to gold simply by existing? Perhaps its feelings during the defeat of Quetzar had done this. Could it be controlled? Spending time in its newfound playground, Xotec practiced its abilities, turning things into gold, transmuting soil and other materials into gold. It had even frozen the great rivers of the High Urobosian City and turned them into gold. Its powers of transmutation were endless! But it had remembered all too well how the previous humans had abused it and its powers. Xotec returned to the Temple of Quetzar to wait for the day when Quetzar would awaken again. Maybe then it could travel the region free from worry of misuse.
- DARK AGES
- Following the defeat of Quetzar, the humans attempted to return to life as much as they could in the wake of devastation. Eronze, no longer needed, was sealed way in a temple to be called upon when needed again. Cultists and Rebels intermingled, focused only on rejuvenating society. The existence of Erion had become known to the Rebel humans, but remained rumor and legend. No one ever found the Steel Age pokemon. The spirits returned to their duties, and Xochi returned to wandering her land, cultivating and gardening where she saw fit. Those few who recalled Xotec remained curious at best. The High Urobosian City had become a place to be feared; ruins filled with dangerous pokemon and Quetzar scared people away. Those few explorers who ventured to the city spoke of solid gold structures and features, and were thus chided and mocked for talk of lunacy. Still, the talk of wealth allured to many, and few expeditions were made to the city. Those who still remembered the ancient Urobosian highways and paths to the City made ventures deep to the city, but few ever returned. And while those that returned shared similar stories of golden structures, and even fewer returned with golden artifacts, the stigma of the city and Quetzar had shunned many into denial. The High Urobosian City had become a point of shame and taboo in Urobos. When a gigantic asteroid struck off the coast of Urobos decades later, most individuals had believed that Quetzar had returned to strike vengeance upon the humans that betrayed it. Calling to arms, the humans traversed the lands devastated by the following massive tidal waves and increased volcanic activity resulting from increased tectonic activity triggered by the asteroids impact. However, the cataclysm had not only devastated the lands, but many of the ancient Urobosian highways and roads had been destroyed as well. For months, the armies of the people, now calling themselves Urobenians to differentiate themselves from the ancient Urobosians, searched for the High Urobosian City, or City of Gold as those that had ventured there had called it. Finally reaching the coast, the armies could only find mountains and hills and rock covering what had once been a city. The city was no more, nature had reclaimed it. And thus, the armies of the Urobenians returned to their lands with tails of the destruction of the City of Gold. And as they returned to their homes, they left many of their ancient beliefs with them. Quetzar was destroyed along with its city. Nature had seen to that.
- But what nature had not seen to was the growing power of Xotec. While the asteroid did inflict much damage upon impact, Xotec had used its powers to shield the city by turning the massive tidal waves threatening to swallow the city whole into gold. A dome of golden ore had enveloped the city, trapping the ancient city and some of the ancient roads with it inside. Furthermore, the increased volcanic activity had covered the city with volcanic rock, burying it deep under stone. Nature had not destroyed the ancient city, merely, it had hidden it from view. To the golden idol and the pokemon still living inside the city, a quiet life away from humans sounded wonderful. And so things remained for countless ages.
- As the ages passed, and the Urobosian War had become ancient memory, so too did the beliefs of many of the Urobenians. The world was opening up to them as they reestablished contact with their precursor tribes from an island chain off the coast of Urobos. These peoples were the forerunners to the first settlers of the island and lived where the first ships had departed to the island. The worship of Yacuma, Patama, and Machima had faltered in time as well. The temples created to worship the Spirit Trio slowly became abandoned and derelict as fewer and fewer people worshipped the Gardeners of Urobos. This lack of belief resulted in tragedy for the Spirit Trio. Not only did they feel they were fighting a losing battle to the growing industrialism of the Urobenians, but as interest in science increased, a plot involving the Island Urobenians occurred where Patama was captured for use in scientific experiments. The Island Urobenians managed to tear Patamas core from its chest, seeking to use it for their own machinations. Discarding Patama, the Island Urobenians then struck out from the mainland to return to their own islands to further their plans. When Yacuma and Machima heard of what had befallen Patama, they combined their efforts to create a massive storm to sink the ship carrying Patamas core. Before reaching the core in the sunken ruins, Yacuma encountered numerous humans trying to save the sunken ship. Fearing the same thing for itself, Yacuma fled as the humans abandoned obtaining the Patama core to chase Yacuma instead. Fleeing to its sunken temple, Yacuma stole itself away to avoid the evil humans. Machima, seeing the lengths humans would go to obtain power, fled to its temple in the Mar de Arena. Wishing to keep humans away from it, it whipped up a neverending and ferocious sandstorm that would make any activity in the desert nigh impossible. And thus, and the Spirit Trio hid themselves away in their temples, far from human interaction, they too faded into legend.
- >Henry Allen Mangrove and James Anthony Northington both studied macro-evolution in a distant region
- >Both arrived independently on the idea of doing their thesis about the distant region of Urobos
- >To this day, Northington insists that Mangrove stole the idea from him
- >The two friends (that’s right, friends) journeyed there together
- >Mangrove became embroiled in the fossils of Kanto and their development across the ages and his early work plays important role in fossil resurrection
- >Northington intended to investigate anthropology of ancient Urobos and role ancient fauna played a role in the development of ancient Urobosian culture.
- >Northington discovers golden tablet which hints at the interaction with ancient Urobosians with ancient deities and unknown role gold plays in this
- >When the two returned to their overseas university, Northingtons discoveries were mocked while Mangroves efforts were lauded as revolutionary. Northingtons tablet is mocked as a decorative table piece.
- >Northingtons resentment of Mangroves success grows and when Mangrove is offered the position of researcher in Urobos, Northingtons rage hits breaking point
- >Friendship dissolves into friendly rivalry (at best description) and both go separate ways.
- >Both acquire professorships in separate fields (Mangrove as Regional Professor of Urobos and Ancient Evolution, Northington as Effects of Evolution on Ancient Cultures)
- >Northington still obsessed with the tablet. He assembles team of eager interns, protégés, and students of his to return to Urobos.
