  1. Imagine being a straight white guy. How do you feel about
  2.
  3. nail shops? Theres quite a few guys who feel comfortable
  4.
  5. in that setting, but theres many who are not. It's alien,
  6.
  7. isnt it? There's staff, regulars. Banter. It's a culture,
  8.
  9. almost. It smells weird, you probably dont speak the
  10.
  11. language, and you have pretty much no control over the
  12.
  13. social order. There's gels, there's shellac, theres
  14.
  15. acrylics, theres pink and white, and so much acetone and
  16.
  17. nail polish you're going to get a contact high. Ladies are
  18.
  19. trying to convince you to get your nails done. Being
  20.
  21. straight, white, and male puts you pretty much in the
  22.
  23. minority. People can talk all kinds of shit about you -
  24.
  25. not that you're really worth the time, but you have that
  26.
  27. loss of power. I really want you to think about that
  28.
  29. feeling. Anyone can make fun of you, and pretty much
  30.
  31. everyone else will back them up. Even the men at the
  32.
  33. salon! That feeling is super important, because it's a
  34.
  35. feeling many women understand walking into gaming cultures
  36.
  37. in general, and especially the FGC.
  38.
  39. Note, I'm going to use the word "you" a lot. I'm not a
  40.
  41. writer, blogger, or anything other than somebody with an
  42.
  43. opinion with arguments. The word "you", may not apply at
  44.
  45. all to you, the reader. Of course, there's also a pretty
  46.
  47. chance that when I say "You", even if you think I'm not
  48.
  49. talking about you, I totally am. I'm going to criticize
  50.
  51. generalizations a lot, while at the same time using this
  52.
  53. all encompassing term; "you". Try to keep your whitey
  54.
  55. tighties on.
  56.
  57. Women in the fighting game scene are a minority to the
  58.
  59. extent you have to understand that when you're shitting on
  60.
  61. random girl #9 for not playing and having opinions, you're
  62.
  63. affecting all women in the community. How do you know
  64.
  65. that's random girl #9? Maybe she's someone who actually
  66.
  67. knows what she's talking about, or does well? People apply
  68.
  69. these prejudices to others. People take this attitude
  70.
  71. because some person in some community somewhere did
  72.
  73. something, and there's collateral damage. "Pro hoes" is a
  74.
  75. concept that seems to just be, hey a girl had sex. That
  76.
  77. almost never happens!!! There's a few specific things I'm
  78.
  79. referencing I dont want to dredge up, but if youve
  80.
  81. followed how everything's progressed you should have a
  82.
  83. couple ideas. I hear all the shit you people say to girls
  84.
  85. who dont play. The stuff you say to X girl for Y reason is
  86.
  87. the exact same shit I hear. I've been told I'm a fake
  88.
  89. gamer looking for male attention. Seriously, that's
  90.
  91. completely fucking ridiculous. By kids who were busy being
  92.
  93. incubated when I was playing Rush'n'Attack. We've since
  94.
  95. ironed it over, but I made a self deprecating joke "I dont
  96.
  97. know anything about this game!" when commentating, I dunno
  98.
  99. it was like Honda vs Guy or something. I dont fking know
  100.
  101. that matchup, and neither do you, LETS BE REAL. When I say
  102.
  103. it, ppl make fucking videos about it. I've ironed that
  104.
  105. situation out like I said, but the issue is the
  106.
  107. preconception where you so readily accept I dont know what
  108.
  109. the fuck I'm talking about. It's getting asked repeatedly,
  110.
  111. "So whose your boyfriend?". Do you know what it's like to
  112.
  113. play a good player - for real, a good player - and being
  114.
  115. told the whole morrigan doom fireball thing wasnt going to
  116.
  117. work and I should switch to sentinel. This is after Chris
  118.
  119. G started his reign of terror, and neither performing nor
  120.
  121. demonstrating knowledge and understanding of tech
  122.
  123. mattered. What mattered is finding a video of a dude doing
  124.
  125. it, then I get patronizingly how to understand it. Do you
  126.
  127. know how patronizing dudes are? Over video games? To
  128.
  129. women? Who beat them? And you expect them to play?
  130.
  131. I've been fortunate enough to grow up with Street Fighter.
  132.
  133. It holds a lot of nostalgia. I was also lucky in that I
  134.
  135. was very young when I become 'initiated'. I cared about
  136.
  137. the franchise and really wanted to succeed and that drove
  138.
  139. me through much of the early hazing. I cared about
  140.
  141. fighting games enough to get serious with Tekken 5 in 2007
  142.
  143. and went through a lot of stuff women picking up the game
  144.
  145. will deal with; exclusion, patronizing, threats, misogyny,
  146.
  147. sexual harassment, etc. To be honest, I handled myself
  148.
  149. pretty well, but I also had certain advantages. For one,
  150.
  151. I've been playing video games before a bunch of yall were
  152.
  153. born. Most women may not have that advantage. But you
  154.
  155. know? What if that was just a random girl. Do you think
  156.
  157. they'd stick around after having someone throw a punch at
  158.
  159. them, telling them not to speak up(EVEN WHEN YOU BODY THIS
  160.
  161. PERSON), or have weird ugly creepy guys trying to set up
  162.
  163. three ways between you and their gross ass and "they knew
  164.
  165. a girl". What if that wasnt me? What if the women youre
  166.
  167. judging have had experiences like that or worse? Does that
  168.
  169. justify people acting out? No. You still dont have the
  170.
  171. entitlement to judge her in this community. Why do you
  172.
  173. want to be another brick in the wall? Do you NOT want
  174.
  175. women in the community? If you do, you're going to have to
  176.
  177. make concessions. Maybe skip every other usage of the word
  178.
  179. bitch, maybe write "get raped" out of your vocabulary. Pro
  180.
  181. ho too, fuck that shit. If a girl is sleeping with a
  182.
  183. player, well humans are humans surprise surprise. Guess
  184.
  185. what? She can pick up a stick. She can ask questions. She
  186.
  187. can watch videos, she can learn, but if you've already
  188.
  189. labeled her as a non playing fake gamer attention whore...
  190.
  191. Or, not even you. Maybe someone else did. SURELY someone
  192.
  193. else did. Do you think that's going to make her want to
  194.
  195. play? Can you blame her? I see lots of people blaming
  196.
  197. women. They want a group that's safe where they can talk
  198.
  199. about... shit that they wanna talk about without assholes
  200.
  201. telling them theyre wrong? I completely empathize with
  202.
  203. that 100%. If they wanna talk about how cute Kobuns are,
  204.
  205. whos got the smallest dick, or how to do sword loops or
  206.
  207. danmaku, great for everyone. It's not in your face to
  208.
  209. insult your sensibilities, and it's also not really about
  210.
  211. you.
  212.
  213. I understand the appeal of the FGC to the dudes who are
  214.
  215. misogynistic and etc etc. Youre a bunch of guys with
  216.
  217. extended boyhoods - I've got an extended childhood through
  218.
  219. games too, so im not judging.. yet - who are looking for a
  220.
  221. safe place to basically let your less savory personality
  222.
  223. traits out loose and wild. It's an outlet, insulated from
  224.
  225. women, and I believe I see a lot of frustrations. Kind of
  226.
  227. a fight club sort of therapy with the stresses in life,
  228.
  229. and unfortunately a lot of that manifests itself
  230.
  231. misogynistically. I'm not perfect. When I was younger, I
  232.
  233. dated a guy and in our nerd culture, I shared his really
  234.
  235. toxic attitude towards women. So, actually, I participated
  236.
  237. in the misogyny by creating these ridiculous constructions
  238.
  239. in my head that judged the worth of a person by a metric
  240.
  241. based off things I was particularly good at, and I really
  242.
  243. missed a lot of opportunities to make friends and I'm
  244.
  245. honestly kind of disgusted with myself. Who cares if
  246.
  247. someone's a slut? What did it really take away from my
  248.
  249. enjoyment of the game? I was looking for approval,
  250.
  251. shamefully I admit, and eventually I came to realize how
  252.
  253. horribly wrong I was. Maybe I found someone personally
  254.
  255. annoying, but that doesnt justify being a little
  256.
  257. machiavelli about it and vilifying other women because in
  258.
  259. the context of the game I was a stronger player. It's hard
  260.
  261. enough without ripping at each others throats, and I see
  262.
  263. plenty of women calling each other bitches and whores and
  264.
  265. I dont get it. With grit, determination, and some
  266.
  267. semblance of solidarity(not saying you gotta be BFFs) the
  268.
  269. image of women in the scene can be reversed, although
  270.
  271. there will undoubtably be numerous conflicts along the
  272.
  273. way. I'm still making mistakes, I'm human, and I'm sorry
  274.
  275. for those in my past I havent done the best by. It's not
  276.
  277. hopeless.
  278.
  279. The advantage that women have in the community is
  280.
  281. visibility and increased access that comes associated with
  282.
  283. said visibility. Intrinsically, this is also probably the
  284.
  285. biggest single disadvantage, because of shitlord fedoras
  286.
  287. and neckbeards looking for any chance they can to
  288.
  289. discredit you; and holy shit will they leap on it. Not
  290.
  291. even talking about myself, any lady whos been around for a
  292.
  293. few years knows what I'm talking about. Dudes dont. They
  294.
  295. dont realize what theyre doing half the time, I think? Be
  296.
  297. aware.
  298.
  299. My newsfeed is full of stuff like this: "THESE BITCHES IN
  300.
  301. THE FGC BE LIKE..." "THESE FEMALES SURPRISED WHEN..." ...
  302.
  303. Here is a novel and hopefully constructive idea: refocus
  304.
  305. the conversation away from portraying women negatively,
  306.
  307. and instead encourage those women who are succeeding.
  308.
  309. Provide visibility and dont reduce it to 'white
  310.
  311. knighting', if at the very least to give women someone
  312.
  313. they identify with. Helps very much with a sense of
  314.
  315. belonging. Chances are, you have dudes you can relate to!
  316.
  317. hooray! Maybe your girlfriend doesnt. Maybe all the
  318.
  319. vitriol is a bit too intimidating.
  320.
  321. I am just one person. I'm one face, one opinion. I've
  322.
  323. spoken with other women in the scene, and there's a lot of
  324.
  325. similarities with their experiences with men(Kill all
  326.
  327. men). Talk to them; listen. If you're a straight guy,
  328.
  329. think about being in that nail shop, and being
  330.
  331. uncomfortable, and at the mercy of possibly getting
  332.
  333. verbally chopped up for the amusement of patrons and
  334.
  335. staff. Dont make women feel like that. And dont be afraid
  336.
  337. of nail shops either, I'm just playing on preconceptions
  338.
  339. and common fears to illustrate a point about respecting
  340.
  341. the women in the scene. Besides, if youre in the FGC you
  342.
  343. probably need it. Nerds and neckbeards, ew gross. Tip your
  344.
  345. tech.
  346.
  347. Women are a bunch of pro hoes and non players looking fr
  348.
  349. male attention and approval? Fuck what you heard, you were
  350.
  351. lied to. Lets see some man-eaters here. At any time, any
  352.
  353. girl could randomly be possessed of the fire and passion
  354.
  355. to grind it out, rise above, and regulate the competition.
  356.
  357. Could be anyone, you never know what tomorrow is going to
  358.
  359. be like. Still, though, guys? It wont be because you
  360.
  361. called her a pro ho whore and she fucked EG/EMP/PA/CTRl|
  362.
  363. McProguy and it went up on Kappa. I hope in 2014 we see
  364.
  365. some ladies rustle some jimmies and we can collectively
  366.
  367. dam all the little baby tears, evaporate it, and shake the
  368.
  369. salt wherever we walk. I'm not sure who's with me, but I'm
  370.
  371. ready to conquer.
