  1. A Brief History of the Rosicrucian Order in North America
  2.
  3. The year 1915 marked the beginning of an exciting new era for the
  4. Rosicrucian Order, AMORC, with the founding of the American branch of the
  5. Order by Dr. H. Spencer Lewis. In 1909 Dr. Lewis was initiated into the
  6. Rosicrucian Order in France and entrusted with the responsibility of
  7. bringing the Rosicrucian teachings to America.
  8.
  9. Centuries before, Rosicrucian philosopher and statesman Francis Bacon
  10. foresaw that the Rosicrucian teachings would find a new home and new
  11. opportunities for growth in the recently--discovered lands of the Western
  12. hemisphere, and with the founding of the American branch of the Order by
  13. Dr. Lewis in 1915 this prophecy came into full manifestation.
  14.
  15. The time was right. In the fertile American social landscape, the Order's
  16. teachings grew strong and blossomed forth in a land free from the
  17. despotism, secrecy, class-consciousness, and religious intolerances of
  18. other lands. From its then headquarters in New York City, the teachings
  19. spread out across the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean, with
  20. thousands of new students eagerly embracing the Rosicrucian system of
  21. study.
  22.
  23. And what a unique system it proved to be! The innovative and visionary
  24. Dr. Lewis brought a new, distinctly American, approach never before used
  25. to disseminate the Order's teachings--an approach especially suited to the
  26. openness of American society and the unfolding twentieth century.
  27.
  28. The Order openly advertised for students, its teachings were disseminated
  29. in the form of printed monographs, and the Order was very much in the
  30. public eye--perhaps most noticeably at Rosicrucian Park in San Jose,
  31. California. There, the Order's landmarks and monuments--its Egyptian-style
  32. Temple and Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum--welcome thousands of visitors
  33. annually.
  34.
  35. Today there are close to 65,000 active Rosicrucian students worldwide,
  36. and over the past 85 years hundreds of thousands of people have been
  37. students of the Rosicrucian teachings. From the beginning, both men and
  38. women have played an equal role in the Rosicrucian Order, without regard
  39. to religion or race. Not a religion, the Rosicrucian Order is unique in
  40. that it provides a foundation that ties together all of the different
  41. aspects of metaphysical and philosophical study and demonstrates their
  42. interconnectedness--and the interconnectedness of all.
