A hulking human holy knight, silver white armor, huge sword, towering shield, walking around some old castle, he looks lost, he is looking for something, a huge painting catches his eye, red letters hastily written over it “go back now”, but the knight can’t, the door he walked through when he got here disappeared as soon as he was finished crossing it, “there might be a passage behind this painting”, he thinks, he attempts to move it, and then a flash of light.
The lights turn on inside the forbidden tower, and this marks the start of a new day, a small kobold girl stares at the ceiling of her shared bedroom, she sometimes has this dream, always the same knight, the same painting, the same flash of light, she is curious about the identity of that knight and what happened to him, was there a passage out of that room behind the painting?
She has asked around her sisters, they all have dreams like that, they see someone they don’t know, and then a flash of light wakes them up, the older sisters say to not worry too much about it, the tower gives visions they say, she doesn’t like the tower very much, it talks, it feels like a thousand voices around her and its really creepy, she would leave, she has thought about it many times, but she always decides to stay, because this tower is the home of her master, and she would never leave his side, not that she has ever been at his side, or anywhere closer to him for that matter.
Like all her sisters she started out as a maid, cleaning the tower, preparing meals and moving stuff around according to her master’s orders, passed down from the elder sisters onto the newer ones, receiving these orders was always a bliss to her, it gave all of them a sense of purpose, and knowing that they came from her master made them holy word, she loved her master, he was all she had, and she was never going to disappoint him.

Alanis, the small kobold girl, gave her bed sheets a quick tug and braved the chilly tower air, she had been promoted to the maid guard, which made her very happy because it took her closer to one day meet her beloved master and be useful to him in any way she was asked to, she was promoted because she was able to wield holy energy, she even had a bright halo over her head, much like the knight on her dream, maybe, she has contemplated during some uneventful guard duties, she was in the same order as the figure in her dreams, it probably wasn’t though, humans and kobolds are not friendly to each other, apparently, she can’t remember much of what happens before she came into the tower, she is glad she did tough, this way she can be helpful to her master, the only important thing she has ever done in her life.
After a quick wash, Alanis puts on her maid uniform, straps her swords and presents herself for work, ready to make her master proud, she hopes the other kobold she meet during her regular maidhood is promptly promoted so she has someone close to talk to, not that her other sisters are not good, but it was always better to stick with sisters of your same race, it felt more natural.
