　俺たちはDランクに上がった。

　随分早いと思って調べてみた。
　昇格の条件は以下の通りである。

　A級の仕事を２０回連続でこなす

　A級の仕事を１００回こなす

　また、失敗が続くと降格がある。
　自分より低いランクの仕事は５回連続失敗で降格。
　同ランクなら１０回連続失敗で降格。
　自分よりランクが上の仕事なら失敗しても降格はないが、
　５回連続失敗で受けることができなくなる。

　ジャリルとヴェックスが二人掛かりで、
　毎日F、Eランクの仕事をやってくれたからこそ、
　ここまであっさりと上がれたというわけだ。
Jaril and Veskel had done F-rank and E-ranks everyday, which is why we've easily been promoted. Right now we're D-rank, meaning

that we can accept C rank requests now. C rank requests are easy, so we'll can quickly rise to C rank.


　現在はDランク。
　つまりCランクの仕事を受けることができる。
　Cランクの依頼は余裕だ。
　だから、すぐにでもCランクには上がれる。

　そろそろ、ジャリルたちとの契約を切ってもいいかもしれない。
　奴らはもうペット誘拐はやらないようだが、
　依頼交換がどんな悪影響を及ぼすかわからない。
It might be about time to end our agreement with Jaril and Veskel. Though they aren't abducting pets anymore, we don't know what

kind of consequences request swapping may have.

　金も貯まってきている。
　彼らと決別し、この町を発つのにはいい頃合いかもしれない。
We've saved up money too. It might be a good time to part with them and leave this town.

　が、
　Cランクに上がるまでは利用させてもらう事にした。
　今の所は問題ないようだし、
　安定して稼げている状態を手放すのは、惜しい。
　金はあればあるだけ、いいからな。
However.
It's best to make use of them until we reach C rank. It'd be a shame to stop this stable arrangement and source of income. It's

fine as long as you have money.

　現在の所持金は緑鉱銭１枚、鉄銭７枚、屑鉄銭１４枚、石銭３５。
　石銭換算だと、１８７５枚といった所だ。
Right now we have 1 green mineral coin, 7 iron coins, 14 scrap iron coins, and 35 stone coins. Converted, that's ￥1875.

　１８７５円……。
　全財産をはたいても、アスラ大銅貨２枚にも満たないのだ。
　いや、よその大陸の物価を考えるのはよそう。

　Cランクに上がり次第、ジャリルたちと決別し、この町を発つ。
　その方向でいくとしよう。

　俺はジャリルと共に、顎に手を当てて悩んだ。
Jaril and I were troubled by it, chins in hands.

　謎の魔物。
　なんとも曖昧な依頼である。
　実はいないのかもしれない。
　仮にいたとしても、
　どうやってその魔物だと証明すればいいのか。
A mysterious monster. That's a really vague request. There might not be anything. If it doesn't exist, then how are you supposed to

verify that?

　しかし、報酬はいい。
　鉄銭２枚。
　倒さなくても屑鉄銭５枚は悪くない。
Still, the reward is good. Two iron coins. Even if we can't defeat it, 5 scrap iron coins isn't bad.

「気になるのか？」
「報酬がいいので。でも怪しい」

"Are you interested?"

"The reward is good. It's suspicious though."

　ジャリルもそれに頷く。
Jaril nods in agreement.

「こういう依頼は報酬をもらえないこともあるからな。やめておいたほうがいい」
"We might not even get a reward with a request like this. It's be better to leave it alone."

　そういう事は、以前に一度あった。
　あれは二週間前。
Something like that happened once before. It was 2 weeks prior.

　アシッドウルフを収集してくれ、という依頼だった。
　俺たちはいつもどおり、アシッドウルフの牙と尻尾を規定通り集めてきた。
　だが、必要なのはアシッドウルフの全身でした、と言われた。
　依頼内容にはそのへんが詳しく書いていなかったが、
　俺たちは違約金を払う事になった。
　思い返すも屈辱的な出来事だ。
It was a request to gather acid wolves. As usual, we gathered acid wolf tails. However, we were told that what they needed were

whole acid wolf corpses. The request hadn't mentioned that detail but we were forced to pay for failing the contract anyway. Even

remembering it is humiliating.

　そうならないためにも、受けないのがいいのだが……。
　俺は金に目が眩んでいた。
So that it doesn't happen again, it'd be best not to take this request but... I've been sucked in by the money.

「ああ、でも、鉄銭２枚……
　もう一度ぐらい『勉強』しておくのもいいかも」
「あんたもこりないな」
「こういう場合、違約金は屑鉄銭５枚分の方が適用されるんでしょう？」
「そうだ。カッコの方は特別報酬みたいなもんだからな」

"Ahh, but it's 2 iron coins... It might be good to give it our all one more time."

"You really don't learn, huh?"

"In this kind of situation, the penalty should be 5 scrap iron coins right?"

"That's right. It seems the stuff in the brackets is a special reward."

　ちなみに、ノコパラがルイジェルドに絡んできたり、
　他冒険者がエリスに絡んできたりとうるさいので、
　二人は外に待たせてある。
By the way, since Nokopera would often approach Ruijeld, and other adventurers would often approach Eris, the two of them decided

it was annoying and are currently waiting for us outside.

　ヴェスケルも冒険者ギルドには顔を出さない。

「まあ、石化の森なら、何もいなくても売れるモノは手に入るだろうし、
　あんたらなら違約金分も回収できるだろう。いいんじゃないか？」
「よし。じゃあ、そっちも頑張って」

"Still, since it's the fossil forest, even if we don't find anything, we'll still get our hands on things that'll sell well. Since

that's the case, we'll make back the money you guys lose. Isn't it fine?"

"Great. Let's give it a go then."

　後で思い返すも、どうにも、この頃の俺は判断力が鈍っていた。
　慣れが慢心を生んでいた。
　順調に行っているがゆえ、リスクを軽視した。
　焦りが利益を追求させた。
Looking back on it, it seems like recently my judgement is getting worse. Conceit is born from experience. Since we'd been doing

well thus far, I ignored the risk.

　そう思う反面、あの時はあれ以上のことは出来なかった。
　そう思う俺がいた。
I should have done a better job. Thinking in the other direction, at that time I couldn't have done it. That's what I thought at

　石化の森。
　距離はリカリスの町から丸一日。
The fossil forest.
It's distance from Rikarisu town is a whole day's travel.

　街道の脇にある森で、
　先の尖った骨のような木が大量に生えており、
　まるで森が石化してしまったように見える。
With a highway running alongside it, in it grows a large number of trees that resembled pointed bones, and the whole forest gives

an impression of being fossilised.

　アーモンドアナコンダやエクスキューショナーといった、
　Bランクに類する、かなり危険な魔物も生息している。
Considerably dangerous B ranked monsters named Almond Anacondas and Executioners inhabit the forest.

　森を突っ切れば、次の町までの近道となるが、
　そんな事をするのは、急ぎの行商人ぐらいだ。
　それも腕に覚えのある護衛を何人も雇った……。
Though cutting through it is a shortcut to the next town, the only people who do as such are merchants in a hurry and the like.

Even then, they're accompanied by skilled guards.

　この世界において森は例外なく危険であるが、
　魔大陸の森は、格別に危険である。
Though the forests of this world are all dangerous without exception, the forests of the Magic Continent are particularly so.

　そんな森の入り口。
　そこには、三つのパーティが集まっていた。
Three parties had gathered at the entrance of the forest.

　一つは、Bランクパーティ『スーパーブレイズ』。
　一つは、Dランクパーティ『トクラブ村愚連隊』。
　そして最後は、Dランクパーティ『デッドエンド』。
The B ranked 『Super Brayz』.
The D ranked 『Tokurabu Village Gang』.
Finally, the D ranked 『Dead End』.

　現在、
　各パーティのリーダーが顔を付きあわせている。
　森等の前でパーティが鉢合わせしたら、
　一応の顔合わせをしておくのが冒険者の常識、だそうだ。
Presently, the leaders of each party are meeting face to face. should adventurers chance upon each other in front of a forest etc.,

it's common courtesy to meet together just in case.

　俺としては無視したい所だったが、
　森の中で鉢合わせしても厄介だ。
　とりあえず、顔を出しておくことにしたのだ。
Though I had wanted to ignore them, it would've been annoying to bump into them while inside the forest. And so I did so just in

case.

At the very start...

「おい、で、なんだてめえらは」
"Oi, dafaq are you doin here?"

　開口一番。
　イライラした顔で言ったのは、『スーパーブレイズ』のリーダーのブレイズだ。
The one who had said this with an irritated expression was the leader of the 『Super Brayz』, Brayz.

　顔に覚えがある。
　確か、初日に俺たちを笑った豚野郎だ。
　おっと、悪口じゃないよ。
　顔が豚なのだ。
　エリスにゲスい目線を向けていた門番と同じ種族だろう。
　種族名はなんと言ったか……。
　俺の脳内では、豚頭(オーク)族と呼んでいる。
I remember his face. If I'm correct, he's the pig bastard who laughed at us on the first day. Ah oops. I should mention that that

wasn't an insult. His face actually looks like a pig's. He's probably of the same clan as the gatekeeper who looked at Eris

sleazily. What's it called again...?
The word 'Pig Headed Clan (Orc)' comes to mind.

　彼らは多種多様な種族で構成されている６人パーティだ。
　ラミアっぽい人、妖精みたいな羽の生えた人、ケンタウロスっぽい人……他。
　魔大陸でCランクに上がるためには、周囲の魔物を狩れる実力が必要だ。
　Bランクともなれば、実力の裏打ちされたベテランということだ。
They're a party of 6 with great diversity. A lamia-looking person, a fairy-winged person, a centaur-looking person... and others.

To reach C rank on the Magic Continent, you need to have the power to hunt the monsters in the vicinity. Meaning to reach B rank,

you'd have to be a powerful veteran.

「オレたちは依頼できたんだよ！」

　『トクラブ村愚連隊』リーダーのクルトはムッとした顔で言った。
　二本の角がチャーミングな美少年だ。

"We're doing a request!" replied Kuruto, the leader of the 『Tokurabu Village Gang』. He's a bishounen with two horns.

「僕らもそうです」

　『デッドエンド』のリーダーも右に同じと頷いた。
　ま、俺だけど。

"We're the same." nodded the 『Dead End』 leader in response. Well, it's just me though.

　Dランク二人の言葉を聞いて、ブレイズはチッと舌打ち。
Hearing this, Brayz then clucked his tongue in impatience.

「ブッキングしちまったか。
　なんか嫌な予感してたんだがなあ……」
"Have you made a booking? I'm getting a bad feeling." he said, scratching his neck in annoyance.

　ブレイズがイライラと首筋を掻いた。

「ぶ、ブッキングってなんですか？」
「あ！？」

"B-, what's a booking?"

"HUH!?"

　クルトがおずおずと聞くと、ブタがいきなりキレた。
Upon hearing Kuruto ask timidly, the pig snapped.

「まぁまぁ、抑えて抑えて。
　何卒、ここは初心者の俺らに一つ、ご教授してください」
"Now, now, please calm down. Since I'm a beginner, if it pleases you could you please tell me one thing?"

　俺が揉み手でスリよると、ブレイズはペッと地面に唾を吐いた。
As I sidled up to him with my hands rubbed together, he spits at the ground with a "peh".

「同時期に違うヤツが依頼を出しちまって、
　それをギルドが管理出来ずに一緒に出しちまったってことだよ」
"When you send out the same request to two different people, the guild doesn't manage it, and they end up both showing up."

　なるほど。
　ダブルブッキングか。
　依頼者が三人いて、依頼が３つ。
　それぞれ違うものだと思っていたら、実は同じものだった。
　という感じか。
　ありそうな出来事だ。
I see now.
So a double booking?
Three parties and three requests.
Though you'd think they're three different questions, in reality they're the same.
That's probably what's happened.

「ちなみに、皆さんはどんな感じの依頼なんですか？」
"By the way, what kind of request did you all get?" I try asking.

　と、聞いてみる。

　ブレイズの依頼。
　『石化の森に出現した、白牙大蛇《ホワイトファングコブラ》の討伐』。
Brayz' request
『Suppress the 《White Fang Cobra》 that appears in the Fossil Forest』

　クルトの依頼。
　『石化の森で目撃された謎の卵の採取』。
Kuruto's request
『Collect the mysterious eggs that have been spotted in the Fossil Forest』

　ルーデウスの依頼。
　『謎の魔物の捜索』。
Rudeus' request
『Investigate the mysterious monster』

「捜索？　あれ？　Dランクにそんな依頼あったっけ？」
"Investigate? Huh? Was there a request like that for D rankers?" asks Kuruto.

　クルトの疑問。
　もちろん、ちゃんと考えてある。
Of course, I consider it properly.

「Cランク依頼です。
　クルトがギルドから出た後に貼りだされたんですよ」
「そっか……そっちの方が良かったな……」

　ブツブツ言うクルトを尻目に、俺は考える。

"It's a C rank request. It was posted after you left the guild, Kuruto"

"I see... It sounds like you got a better one than us." grumbles Kuruto and I glance to the side at him, and think.

　依頼内容だが、ちょっとずつ被ってる感じはする。
　まず、この森には白牙大蛇はいない。
Regarding the details of the request, it feels like they're trying to hide something. First of all, there are no white fang cobras

in this forest.

　しかし、討伐依頼が出ているということは、発見されたということだ。
　つまり、謎の魔物も、白牙大蛇である……かもしれない。
　謎の卵も白牙大蛇の卵……かもしれない。
However, a request for their subjugation appeared. In other words, it could that be that the mysterious monster is a white fang

cobra... It may also be that the mysterious eggs are white fang cobra eggs.

　もちろん、謎シリーズが白牙大蛇ではない可能性もある。
　ダブルブッキングと断じたブレイズは早計だ。

「それにしても、どうしてこんな事が？」

　コンピューター管理じゃないしな。
Well, I guess that can't be helped. There's no computer management after all.

「で？　こういう場合はどうすれば？」
「どうもしねえよ、早い者勝ちだ」

"And? What should you do in these situations?"

"There's nothing you can. It's first come first served."

　ブレイズが言うと、クルトが驚愕の声を上げた。
Hearing Brayz say this, Kuruto raises his voice in shock.

「なっ！　あんたらが先に魔物を倒したら、
　オレたちの依頼はどうなるんだよ！」
「あん？　卵の採取だったか？
　そりゃ見つけたら割るさ。
　白牙大蛇《ホワイトファングコブラ》が繁殖でもしたら大変だ」

　ブレイズはヘラヘラとクルトをあざ笑った。

"Wha-! If you guys kill the monsters first, what are we supposed to do about our request!?

"Huh? The egg request? If we see some we'll split them. If the white fang cobra population increases, it'll be pretty bad after

all."

Brayz laughs in ridicule at Kuruto.

「なあ、ルーデウス。あんたからも言ってくれよ！
　こいつらに先に倒されたら、オレたちの依頼が……！」

　と、クルトは俺に矛先を向けた。

"Hey, Rudeus. You say something too! If these guys kill all the monsters first then our requests..."

Kuruto turns to me instead.

　確かに、彼らが先に魔物を倒せば、俺たちの捜索依頼も失敗……。
　いや、俺たちは捜索が任務だ。
　白牙大蛇がいました、と報告すれば、それで完了になりそうな空気はある。
　もしそれでダメでも、森で魔物を狩って帰れば、違約金分は払えそうだ。
Certainly, if they kill all the monsters first, our investigation will end in failure... No, our job is just to investigate. If we

just report that there were white fang snakes, we'd probably be able to finish the request. Even if not, if we head off the to

forest and hunt, we'd probably be able to pay off the fine.

「まだダブルブッキングと決まったわけじゃありません。
　白牙大蛇ではない、別の魔物もいるかもしれません」

"There is still no certainty that this is a double booking. It may not be a white fang snake and could be some other monster

instead."

　俺がそう言うと、ブレイズは嫌そうな顔をした。
Brayz makes an unhappy face.

「だから、いっしょに探しましょうってか？
　俺らに子守をしろって言うのか？」

"So you're saying we should search together? Are you telling us to babysit you?"

　ん？
　なんでそうなるんだ？
Mm? How'd it come to that?

　と、俺は疑問に思ったが、
　クルトは子守と聞いて、反射的にカッとなったようだ。
As I think this, Kuruto who hears the word 'babysit' flares up.

「誰がお前らの世話になりたいって言ったよ！」
「とかいって、俺らに守ってもらいてえんだろ？
　Dランクじゃこの森はキツイからなぁ」

"Who the hell asked for your help!?"

"Even if you say that, you still want our help don't ya? For a D rank, this forest is pretty difficult."

　ああ、なるほど、そういうことか。
Ahh I see. So that's why.

　俺とクルトの２パーティが、
　Bランクのブレイズたちに金魚の糞みたくくっついて、
　それで楽に依頼を達成するのが嫌なのか。
　ブレイズたちの負担が増えるだけだからな。
Since our two teams seem like we'd want to stick to the B ranked Brayz team and easily finish our request, Brayz doesn't like it.

It'd increase Brayz' burden after all.

　無論、俺も一緒に行動したくない。
　ルイジェルドが槍で戦う所は見られたくない。
　彼は強すぎるから、本当のスペルド族だとバレる可能性もある。
Of course, I don't want to go together. I don't want them to see Ruijeld fighting with a spear. Since he goes overboard with

killing, it might become known that he's a real Supeld.

　なので、
　ここはクルトに便乗させてもらうか。
Shall I take advantage of the situation?

「そうですね。実に不愉快です。
　子守は必要ありません。『デッドエンド』は単独で行動させてもらいます」

"That's so, isn't it? It would truly be uncomfortable. There's no need for babysitting. 『Dead End』 will be moving independently, if

that's fine."

　俺は一方的にそう言って、リーダーの輪から出た。
As I declare this unilaterally, I leave the circle of leaders.

　ルイジェルドとエリスの所に戻る。
　ルイジェルドは森の方を見ており、
　エリスはその脇で暇そうにしていた。
I return to Ruijeld and Eris. While Ruijeld has been observing the forest, Eris has been idling nearby.

「なんだったの？」
"What happened?" she asks, since I had come back without a word.

　待ちかねたと言わんばかりに、エリスが聞いてくる。

「依頼内容がダブルブッキングしてたんです」
「ダブルブッキング？」
「内容が被っていたんです」
「それはどうなるの？　譲っちゃったりするの？」
「まさか、早い者勝ちですよ」
「そう、腕がなるわね」

"The contents of our request have been double booked."

"Double booked?"

"The contents were disguised."

"So then now what? Are we going to turn it over to someone else?"

"There's no way that we will. It's first come, first served."

"Really? I've been itching to do this."

　エリスはやる気満々だった。
　エリスは最近の冒険者らしくない狩りにはうんざりしているようだった。
　狩りというより、完全に『作業』だからな。
Eris seems completely pumped up. It seems that Eris is fed up with all the unadventurous hunting we've been doing lately. Hunting

is just work after all.

　そうこうしているうちに、ブレイズとクルトも話が終わったようだ。
　クルトは残り二人に短く話かけ、森へと入っていった。
In a hurry, Brayz and Kuruto have finished talking as well. Exchanging just a few worsd, Kuruto and his party head into the forest.

　『スーパーブレイズ』も、彼らとは違う方向へと入っていく。
『Super Brayz』 enter as well, in a different direction.

「ねえ、私たちはどうするの？」
「そうですね。いつもどおりルイジェルドに索敵をしてもらって、
　例の謎の魔物とやらを探す方向で行きましょうか」

　と、思ったが、ルイジェルドが首を振った。

"Hey. What are we going to do?"

"Let's see... How about we have Ruijeld search as usual, and we head in the direction of the mystery monster or whatever?"

Or so I thought, but Ruijeld shakes his head.

「まて」
「どうしました？」
「あの三人の子供が心配だ」

"Wait."

"What's wrong?"

"I'm worried about those three kids."

　三人の子供。
　愚連隊のことだろう。
The three kids. I guess he means the youth gang.

「彼らの実力では、この森では生きていけん」
「つまり？」
「手伝ってやろう」

　ということらしい。

"With their power, they won't survive this forest."

"In other words?"

"Let's help them."

And that's basically how it is.

「……でも、あまり一緒に行動すると、スペルド族だってバレますよ」
「構わん」

　俺が構うっちゅーねん。

"...Still, if they accompany us, they'll find out that you're a Supeld."

"I don't care."

But I care! [←for some reason seems to be Kansai dialect. Reference? Joke? Said like that jokingly?]

「スペルド族だとバレたら、色々厄介な事になります」
「ならば、彼らを見殺しにしろというのか？」
「そうは言っていません。
　後ろから追尾して、いざという時に助けてあげましょう」

"It'll become quite troublesome if they find out you're a Supeld."

"Are you saying you want to let them die?"

"I didn't say that. Let's follow them from behind, and save them when it becomes necessary."

There's no helping it. Change of plans.

Let's give up on the two iron coins and go for gratitude instead.

Still, even if we just go ahead and save them, I wonder if things will be okay. If monsters suddenly attack and we jump in to save

them, the chance that they find out that he's a Supeld will increase.

Though I want to believe that they wouldn't hold prejudice towards their saviours... Still, the existence known as 'Dead End' has a

special meaning on the Magic Continent. I wonder how things will work out.

And so like that, we begin to tail Kuruto and his party.

　仕方がない。作戦変更だ。
　鉄銭２枚は諦め、恩を売る事にしよう。

　しかし、安易に手助けをしても大丈夫なのだろうか。
　魔物に襲われている所を助けるとなると、
　スペルド族だとバレる可能性が高くなる。

　さすがに命を助けてもらってまで、偏見を持ち出す事はないと思いたいが……。
　しかし、デッドエンドという存在は魔大陸では特別だ。
　どうなるかわからない。

　いざとなれば、ジャリル達のように仲間に引き入れる方向でいくか……。

　というわけで。
　クルトたちを尾行することにした。

　さて、
　クルトたちは、意気揚々と森の奥へと入っていった。
　ルイジェルドはそれを見て、眉を潜めていた。
Now then, Kuruto and his gang have rather proudly entered the forest. Seeing this, Ruijeld had knitted his eyebrows together.

「どうしました？」
「奴ら、森に入るのは初めてなのか？」
「さあ、僕は知りませんが」
「迂闊すぎる」

　と、その心配の通り、
　クルトたちは索敵に失敗し、
　エクスキューショナーと遭遇した。

　エクスキューショナーは人型をした魔物だ。
　中身は生前に冒険者だった者のゾンビである。
　そのゾンビが、なぜか巨大な剣と分厚い全身鎧で武装している。
　動きはそれほど早くはないが、ひたすらにタフで、剣に技術がある。
　危険度的にはBに分類される。
　基本的に単体であり、それほど大きいサイズでもない。
　なのにB。
　強敵である。

　ちなみに、剣と鎧は死ぬと消滅する。
　金にならない嫌な敵だ。

　そんな魔物に遭遇したクルトたちは、
　出会って早々に全力逃走。

"What's wrong?"

"Those guys, is this the first time they've entered a forest?"

"Who knows."

"They're being too careless."

In line with those worries, Kuruto had failed in detecting the enemy and came across an executioner.

Executioners are a humanoid monster. Inside is an adventurer who had died and become a zombie. Somehow that zombie picks up a huge

sword and becomes clothed in full-body armour. They don't move that quickly, but are very tough and are skilled with the sword.

They'd be ranked about B level in danger.

They're a pretty simple monster, and aren't that big.

Even so, they're B ranked.

They're powerful.

By the way, once they die their sword and armour vanishes. A truly hateful enemy that won't earn you money.

Kuruto's party who encounter such a monster immediately flee with all their strength.

「助けに入るぞ！」
「いえ、まだです」

"Going in to save them!"

"No, not yet."

I had stopped Ruijeld from flying in.

　飛び出そうとしたルイジェルドを、俺は止めた。

「なぜだ！」
「まだピンチじゃありません」

"Why!?"

"They're not in a pinch yet."

　エクスキューショナーは鎧姿に似合わず素早いが、
　しかし、全力で逃げているクルトたちに追いつけるほどではない。
　次第に距離が離れ、このままいけば逃げ切れる。

　という所で、クルト達の運が尽きた。
　彼らの逃げた先にいたのは、アーモンドアナコンダ。
　３～５匹程度で群れる魔物で、体にアーモンドのような紋様がある。
　体長は３メートル程度。
　牙には強力な毒があり、動きも俊敏。タフで数も多い。
　ゆえにB。
　強敵である。

　石化の森を代表する、出会いたくない魔物トップ２。
　それに挟まれたのだ。

　クルトたちの半泣き半笑いの顔。

　大方、どちらかに出会っても逃げればいいや、ぐらいに思っていたのだろう。
　実際、エクスキューショナーからは逃げきれそうな感じだった。
　こうなったのは、彼らが考え足らずだからだ。
　実力的に見合った場所でないのだから、やめておけばいいのに。
　でも、ちょっと背伸びをしたい気持ちはわかる。
　浅はかなり。

Unfitting for an armoured figure, the executioner is fast. However, it's not so fast that it'll catch up to Kuruto's party who are

fleeing with all their strength. The distance gradually grows, and like this they should be able to get away.

And just as this happens, their luck runs out. Nearby them is an almond anaconda. 3 to 5 monsters with an almond patterned skin

crowd about. They're about 3 metres long. Their fangs are poisonous and they ahve keen movements. They're tough and come in large

numbers too.

That's why they're ranked B.

They're strong.

Representatives of the fossil forest, they're in the top 2 of monsters you don't want to meet.

And Kuruto's party is caught between them.

With half crying, half laughing expressions.

'If we meet either of them, we'll just run away' is probably what they were thinking.

It seems like they had almost escaped the executioner too.

That's it's come to this can all be chalked down to their thoughtlessness.

If they hadn't considered where they were running to, they should've stopped.

Still, I somewhat understand that feeling of overconfidence.

Foolishness.

「助けるぞ！」
「いや、もうちょっと待って」

"I'm saving them!"

"No, wait just a little more."

　すぐに助けようとするルイジェルドを制する。
　ギリギリのピンチを演出するのだ。
　ピンチになればなるほど、売れる恩も大きくなる。
　傷だらけになった所で、治癒魔術で直せばいい。
　ククク。
　俺の策は完璧だ。

I stopped Ruijeld who wanted to rush right in. We'll save them when they're in a pinch. The closer they are to death, the more

grateful they'll feel. I can just heal up their wounds.

Kukuku.

My plan is perfect.

「あ！」

　エリスの叫び。

"Ah!"

Eris had shouted.

　体を両断されて宙を舞う、鳥っぽい少年。
　一撃だった。
　彼はエクスキューショナーの攻撃をいなすことが出来ず、
　一撃で即死した。

The bird-ish boy's bisected body flies through the air.

It was a single blow.

Unable to parry the executioner's blow, he was killed with one strike.

　俺の悪い笑みが引きつった。
　そして自分の考え違いに気づいた。
　彼らは、すでに、ギリギリのピンチだったのだ。
　浅はかなのは、俺だった。

My sinful smile had cramped.

Then I realised my misunderstanding; they were already in a pinch.

The one who was foolish was me.

「だから言った！」
"That's why I told you!"

　ルイジェルドの苛立ち混じった声。
Ruijeld's voice is mixed with hesitation.

　俺は即座に岩砲弾(ストーンキャノン)をエクスキューショナーに放った。
　同時にルイジェルドとエリスも飛び出した。
I immediately loose a stone cannon shot at the executioner. At the same time, Ruijeld and Eris rush in.

　俺の魔術を食らって、エクスキューショナーは生きていた。
　ストーントゥレントゥを一撃で倒した岩砲弾(ストーンキャノン)を受けて立っていた。
　硬すぎる、と思ったが、よく見ると右手だけが吹っ飛んでいた。
　狙いを外したのだ。
　ヤツは左手で剣を拾うと、こちらに向かって走ってきた。
　遠目に見れば遅いと思ったが、
　こうして向かってくると、
　その鈍重そうな見た目からは想像もできないスピードに思えた。
The executioner who received my magic had survived. It had taken a shot from the stone cannon that killed a stone turrent in one

hit, and survived. 'It's way too hard', I had thought, but looking carefully I see that one of it's arms had been blown off.

I had missed.

It picks up its sword with its left hand and comes my way.

It ran with a speed unimaginable from that slow-looking appearance.

　俺は冷静に、ヤツの足元に柔らかい泥沼を設置した。

　ズボッと片足をツッコミ、前のめりに倒れるエクスキューショナー。
　俺はヤツの真上に巨大な岩石を召喚し、勢いよく叩き潰した。

　その頃、ルイジェルドたちもアーモンドアナコンダを全滅させていた。

I had calmly changed the ground at its feet to mud.

One leg had sunken in, and the executioner fell forward.

I summoned a large rock above it, and crushed it unsparingly.

Around that time, Ruijeld and Eris had finished with the almond anacondas as well.

　クルトは真っ青な顔でガクガクと震えながら、
　しかししっかりと礼だけは言ってくる。

「お、おまえら、つ……強いんだな……」
"Y-, you guys are s... strong, aren't you?"

　岩の下敷きになったエクスキューショナー
　首を綺麗に断ち切られて死んでいるアーモンドアナコンダ。
　まあ、このぐらいなら楽勝だ。
The executioner had been crushed by a stone.
The almond anacondas had been clearly decapitated.
Well, just this much is still an easy victory.

　楽勝なのに、
　助けられなかったのだ。
Though it was an easy victory, he couldn't be saved.

「いや、助けるのが遅れて……悪かった」
"No, we came in too late... I'm sorry."

　クルトの目には、憧憬の色がつき始めていた。
　俺は胸が痛くなり、視線を逸らした。
　逸らした先には、体を半分に割られて死んだ少年がいた。
　嘴のついた顔。
　たしかガブリンとかいう名前だったか。
　俺が余計なことを考えなければ、死ぬことはなかっただろう。
For the first time, Kuruto's eyes show a sense of longing.

My chest hurts, and I avert my eyes.

In my sight is one half of the dead boy's bisected corpse.

If I remember correctly, his name was Gaburin.

Because I thought up too many unnecessary things, he died.

　そう考えていると、
　ルイジェルドに胸ぐらを掴まれた。

　俺だって、こんなつもりじゃなかったんだ。

　やるせない気持ちでいっぱいだ。
　こんな結果を望んだわけじゃない。
　反省だってしている。
　後悔だってしている。
　なのに、なんで反省してるのに責められなければいけないんだ。
I'm filled with regrets.
I didn't wish for this kind of outcome.
I'm reflecting on it.
I'm regretting it.
Even though I'm reflecting on it, why do I have to be condemned no matter what?

「俺だって一生懸命なんだよ！
　ここ一番で最大の成果が出るように狙ったんだよ！
　なんでそれを責められなきゃいけないんだよ！」
「死んだからだ！」

　思わず声を荒げたが、的確に言い返された。

"I tried my best as well you know! I wanted the best result! Why do you have to blame me for that?"

"Because he died!"

I had unconsciously raised my voice, and was precisely shot down.

「ぐっ……」
"Guu..."

　言い返せない。
　俺が殺したようなものだ。
I can't talk back.
I'd basically killed someone.

"..."

　エリスも今日は黙っている。
　彼女も思う所があったんだろうか。
　ガブリンの死体をじっと見ていた。
Today Eris had stayed silent as well.

　だが、クルトも引き下がらない。

「関係ないけど、わかるさ。オレたちが戦っている所を見て、助けるか見捨てるかで意見が割れたんだろ！？」
"Though it isn't my problem, I understand. When you saw us battling, you were disagreeing on whether to save us or abandon us,

right!?"

　いいえ。
　実際には割れるどころか、俺が独断で見捨てる形になりました。

Actually the reason we ended up disagreeing was because I arbitrarily decided to abandon you.

「確かにあんたらは強いかもしれないけど、万が一だってある。
　それに、オレたちを助ける義理もない！」
"Though you guys are definitely strong, anything could happen. You had no obligation to save us!"

　ルイジェルドの髪が逆立ったかと思った。
Ruijeld's hair must be standing on end.

「義理などではない！　子供を助けるのは大人の責任だ！」
"There's no need for obligations! It's the responsibility of adults to save children!"

　その言葉に、クルトがカッとなったのがわかる。
Seeing this, it was easy to see that Kuruto had flared up.

「オレたちは子供じゃない！　冒険者だ！
　ルーデウスのリーダーとしての判断は正しい！」
「むっ……」

"We're not children! We're adventurers! Rudeus' judgement as a leader was correct!"

　ルイジェルドが黙った。
　けど俺は、自分の判断を正しいとは思っていない。
Ruijeld had fallen quiet.

But I don't think that my judgement was correct.

「だが、仲間が死んだのだぞ？」
「見りゃわかるよ！
　確かにオレたちも、このままずっと三人でって思ってたさ！
　けど、死ぬことだってちゃんと覚悟してきたつもりだ！
　冒険者なら、若くたって、年寄りだって、みんな覚悟してる！」

"But your friend has died, you know."

"Anyone can see that! It's true that it's always been us three together! But we properly resolved ourselves for death! Whether

young or old, all adventurers hold that resolution!"

　ズキンと胸がいたんだ。
　俺には、そんな覚悟は無い。
　冒険者という職業は、あくまで金儲けの手段としてしか見ていない。
My chest panged with pain.
I don't have that kind of resolution.
In the end, I had just seen adventuring as a way of making money.

「助けてくれたのには感謝してる！
　けど、ウチのメンバーのことはウチの問題……。
　いや、依頼の難易度を見極められなかったオレの責任だ」

"We're grateful that you've saved us! But what happens to our members is our problem! No, that I didn't see through the difficulty

of the request was my fault."

　クルトの言葉は青臭い。
　若い正義感とでもいうんだろうか。
　それとも社会に揉まれていないガキっぽさがあるとでもいうんだろうか。

　しかし、そこには必死さがあった。
　最近の俺に、明らかに足りなかったものだ。
　所持金とギルドのランクばかりを気にして、
　依頼をゲーム感覚で捉えていた俺には、なかった必死さだ。

「謝らないでください。俺がミスした事実は、帳消しにはならないんですから」
「いや。ミスではない。
　お前は奴らの戦士としての矜持を守ろうとしたのだ。
　すぐに助けようとした俺は浅はかだった」
「いや……」

"Please don't apologise. It's the truth that I had made a mistake. The facts won't disappear."

"No, it wasn't a mistake. You had protected their honour as warriors. I was too thoughtless in wanting to save them right away."

　そんなことは、一切考えてなかった。
I hadn't thought about that at all.

「あの小悪党の二人組の時もそうだったな……」
"The time when you joined up with those two villains was the same."

　ルイジェルドは一人で勝手に納得している。
Ruijeld had come to his own understanding.

　俺は納得していない。
　今回の件は反省しなければならない事柄の一つだ。
　すぐにでも悪かった点を洗いだし、
　次回、似たようなミスを犯さないように整理すべきだ。
I couldn't agree.
The incident this time is something I must reflect on.
I should immediately apologise and confess, so that next time I make this kind of mistake again.

　と、思う反面。
　勝手にそう勘違いしてもらえてラッキー。
　結果よければ全部オッケーじゃん。
　という、浅ましい考えもあった。

「一人欠けては町に戻れないかもしれない。
　けど、死ぬ覚悟はしている」
"They mightn't make it back to town if they're short one. But they've prepared themselves to die." said Ruijeld sadly.

　そう言った彼の背中は物哀しく、思わずエリスが駆け寄り、

『頑張りなさいよ！』

　と、声を掛けるほどだ。
　言葉は通じていないが、エリスの表情から、
　なんとなくクルトも言いたいことがわかったらしい。

Unconsciously, Eris had run forward and shouted

『Do your best!』 [← Western Human Language]

Though they couldn't have understood her, but it seems that seeing her facial expression, they had understood what she had wanted

to say.

「ありがとう……えっと、こうだっけ？」
『えっ！』

　と、エリスの手を取ると、その親指の付け根あたりにキスをした。
　そして、にこやかに笑って去っていった。

"Thanks... Um, was it like this?"

『Eh!』

As he said that, he had taken Eris' hand and kissed her on the hand.              [lit. base of thumb]
After that he walked away smiling brightly.

　エリスは固まっていた。
　俺もどうしていいかわからなかった。
Eris was troubled.
I didn't know what to do either.

　エリスはバッと振り返り、俺を見た。
　そして、キスされたあたりをゴシゴシと鎧の裾でこすった。
With a spin, Eris turned to look at me.
Then she rubbed the place that was kissed against her armour.

『ち、違うんだから！』

『I-, it's not what you're thinking!』

　エリスは何やら必死な顔をしていた。
　キスといっても、皮の手袋ごしだ。
　そんなに必死にならなくてもいいと思うんだが。
For some reason Eris' expression had become frantic. Even if it's a kiss, it was through a fur glove. I thought it was fine even if

she didn't get so distressed.

『こ、これ、もう使わないから！』

『I-, I'm not going to use this anymore!』

　エリスは手袋をはずすと、ぽいと森の奥へと放り投げた。
　おいこら、手袋もタダじゃないんだぞ。
Taking off the glove, Eris threw it deep into the forest.
Oi! That wasn't free you know!

『装備品を投げるな！』
『新しいのを買う金が勿体ないでしょう！』

『Don't throw away your equipment!』

『Isn't it too wasteful to spend money on a new one!?』

　俺とルイジェルドの叱責が重なった。
　反射的な言葉だったが、こんな時にまで金の話を持ち出してしまうとは。
　ううむ……。
Ruijeld and I scolded her together.
Though I had spoken words of reflection, to still be thinking about money is...
Uumu...

『うるさい！』

『You're annoying!』

　エリスは涙目になって地団駄を踏んだ。
　こんなエリスは久しぶりに見る。
　なんだろう。
　手の甲にキスをするというのは、どんな意味があるんだろう。
Eris' eyes had become teary and she was stamping her feet. It's been a while since I've seen this kind of Eris. Huh. I wonder what

significance there is in kissing the back of the hand.

『ルーデウス！　はい！』

『Rudeus! Here!』

　と、彼女は、俺の眼前に手を差し出した。
　反射的に舐めた。
Saying that, she held out her hand in front of my eyes. I reflexively licked it.

　エリスの顔が真っ赤に染まり、俺はグーで殴られた。
　意識が刈り取られそうになるほどの本気パンチだった。
　首の骨が折れるかと思った。
　このパンチなら世界が取れると思った。
　俺は無様に地面に転がった。
Eris' face had dyed red, and I was hit. I was punched seriously until I had seriously begun losing consciousness. I had thought

　何をすればよかったんだ？

　殴られて地面に倒れていると、
　エリスが俺になめられた所をじっと見て、ペロっと舌で舐めたのが見えた。
With me having fallen onto the ground, Eris stared at the place I had licked and I saw her give it a lick.

　そして、見る間に真っ赤になると、ごしごしと服の裾で手を拭った。
After that, with her face turned red, she quickly wiped it against her armour.

『ご、ごめんルーデウス。でも舐めちゃだめよ！』

『S-, sorry, Rudeus. But licking is forbidden!』

　その仕草が可愛かったので、俺は全てを許した。
　ついでに、失敗して鬱だった気分も、ちょっと晴れた。

"Ruijeld-san, what is a warrior to you?"

"A warrior is a person who protects children, and values his comrades."

An immediate reply. Still, from what, I could finally understand why Ruijeld had been angry until now. He wasn't just blindly

following a sense of justice.

A warrior wishes for nothing but dignity.

A warrior won't injure children.
A warrior must always protect children.
A warrior will never abandon his comrades.
A warrior must always protect his comrades.

He carries these thoughts inside him.

That's why he had decided that the pet abductor that had kicked me was a villain.
Moreover, when the two that didn't avenge him, but rather begged for their lives and disgracing the pride of all warriors, he had

decided they were villains.

Kuruto's party was the same. At first he had seen them as children. In other words, I, who had abandoned children, was a villain.

Still, not long ago after a harsh scolding from Kuruto, he had changed his mind. He his view of Kuruto's party changed from

children to warriors. Once that happened, my actiosn became forgivable. On the contrary, he was reflecting for not treating them as

warriors.

I can't figure out where the line between children and warrior is for him. Eris seems to be a seen as a child. I wonder which I am.

Should I ask? Should I not ask?

"It seems they're fighting."

While I'm troubled about this, Ruijeld raises his voice in warning.

"Brayz' party from before...?"

"That's right."

　即答だった。
　しかし、そのことから、俺はようやく、
　今までルイジェルドが怒っていた理由を察することができた。
　彼は、考えなしの正義感ではない。

　戦士に矜持を求めていただけなのだ。

　戦士は子供を害してはならない。
　戦士は子供を守らなければならない。
　戦士は仲間を見捨ててはならない。
　戦士は仲間を守らなければならない。

　彼の中には、こんな感じの考えがあるのだ。

　だから、俺を蹴り飛ばしたペット誘拐犯は悪党と断定された。
　そして、その敵を討とうともせず命乞いをした二人も、
　戦士の風上にも置けない悪党と断定された。

　クルトたちもそうだ。
　最初は彼らを子供として見ていた。
　子供を見捨てた俺は、悪党というわけだ。

　しかし、先程の啖呵で、考えを改めた。
　子供から戦士へと認識を変えた。
　そうすることで、俺の行動が許された。
　むしろ、彼らを戦士として見ていなかったと、彼は反省した。

　彼の中における、子供と戦士の線引がどうにもわからない。
　エリスはどうやら子供として見ているようだが。
　俺はどっちなのだろうか。

　聞くべきか、聞かざるべきか。

「戦っているな」

　悩んでいると、ルイジェルドが警戒の声を上げた。

「さっきの……ブレイズたちですか？」
「そうだ」

　ブレイズたちであるらしい。
　ルイジェルドの第三眼がどういう見え方をしているのかわからない。
　鉢巻で塞がれていても見えているのは知っていた。

　それと、単なるレーダーだけでなく、
　個体の識別も出来るらしい。
　便利だ。
　俺も欲しい。

It seems to be Brayz' party. I don't understand how Ruijeld's third eye works. I know that it works even when it's covered up with

a hachimaki.

Moreover, it's not a simple radar, but seems to be able to distinguish individuals. How convenient. I want one too.

「助けますか？」
「必要なかろう」

　さすがBランクともなると、ルイジェルドに戦士として見てもらえるらしい。

　森の先には、一匹の大蛇がとぐろを巻いていた。
　そして、その周囲には四つの死体があった。

"Will we save them?"

"That seems unnecessary."

As expected, B rankers are warriors in Ruijeld's eyes.

In the forest ahead is a large snake, coiling around itself. And in the area around it are four corpses.

「………え？」

　死んでるんですけど。
　あ、必要ないって、そういう意味？

　ブレイズの死体は無い。
　逃げたんだろうか。

"...Eh?"

Uh, they've died though? Oh, so this is what he meant by 'unnecessary'?

Brayz' corpse isn't here.

「残り二人は？」
「死んでいる」

　全滅したらしい。

「しかし、あの魔物は？」

　ブレイズたちを全滅させた魔物は、デカかった。

The monster that had wiped out Brayz' party is huge.

「あれは赤喰大蛇(レッドフードコブラ)だな」

　その赤い蛇は、
　俺とエリスが両手を繋いでも抱えきれない胴体、
　１０メートルはあろうかという長さ、
　そして、威嚇するように広げられている頚部を持っていた。

　胴体の途中が、ポコリと大きくなっていた。
　あの片方は恐らく豚肉だろう。

　ていうか、白蛇って話じゃなかったっけ？

"That's a red food cobra (red food large snake)."

That red snake has a trunk thick enough that Eris' and my combined armspans wouldn't be enough to wrap around. It seems to be 10

metres in length, and its neck is spread open in a threatening manner.

Halfway down its length, its body suddenly widens. The others have probably become pig meat. [lol]

Hangon, wasn't it supposed to be a white snake?

「この森に赤喰大蛇(レッドフードコブラ)がいるとはな。しかもでかい」
「普通はいないんですか？」
「普通はな。だが、稀に発生する」

　赤喰大蛇(レッドフードコブラ)とは、
　白牙大蛇《ホワイトファングコブラ》の上位種である。

　白牙大蛇よりも巨大な体を持ちながら、敏捷性は大幅に上回る。
　火に耐性を持つ硬い鱗で全身を覆い、鋭い牙には猛毒がある。

　何を摂取して変異するのかはわかっていないらしいが、
　白牙大蛇のいる所に、ごく稀に発生する。

　白牙大蛇はBランクだが、
　赤喰大蛇はAランクに相当する強敵である。
　Bランクのパーティでは、瞬殺だっただろう。

　ということらしい。

　彼は食事に夢中で、どうやらこちらには気付いていないようだ。
　今にも、三つ目の餌に取り掛かろうとしている。

"To think there'd be a red food cobra in this forest. And it's big, too."

"Do they not normally appear here?"

"Normally, yeah. But they do rarely appear."

It seems that a red food cobra is a superior form of white fang cobra. It's bigger in size, and its ability is far better than the

white fang cobra. Its entire body is covered in fire resistant scales, and its sharp teeth exude poison. It's not known what it

eats to become a red food cobra, but they'll very rarely appear in areas where white fang cobras can be found.

The white fang cobra is B ranked, but the red food cobra is a formidable A rank enemy. It's strong enough to instantly kill a B

rank party.

Since it's busy eating, it doesn't seem to have noticed us. Even now, it's about to start eating it's third one.

「やれるわよね？」

　エリスが自信満々に剣を抜く。

"We can kill it, right?" Eris draws her sword, full of confidence.

「やるのか？」

　ルイジェルドが俺に聞いてくる。

"Are we going to kill it?" Ruijeld asks me.

「……僕が決めてもいいんですか？」
「任せる」
「他に誰が決めるのよ」

　任せられた。

　ちょっと考えてみよう。
　依頼内容は、謎の魔物の発見か討伐。

　とりあえず、白牙大蛇《ホワイトファングコブラ》か赤喰大蛇(レッドフードコブラ)が謎の魔物で間違いなさそうだ。
　この森にはいないらしいしな。

　ソレっぽいのを発見した現在、帰っても依頼は成功だ。
　しかし、倒せば鉄銭２枚の報酬。
　出来ることなら、倒したい所だ。

　とはいえ、命あっての物種、という言葉もある。
　今さっき、目の前で一人が死んだばかりだ。
　負けたら死ぬ。
　危険な橋は渡りたくない。

"...Is it okay for me to decide?"

"I'll leave it up to you."

"Who else would decide?"

It was left up to me.

Let's think about it for a minute. The request asks us to subjugate the mysterious monster.

For the moment, it seems that the mysterious monster is the white fang cobra or the red food cobra. They don't seem to appear here

normally.

Now that we've discovered this, even if we return now our job would be complete. But if we defeat it we get 2 iron coins. If

possible, then I want to defeat it.

Though you could also say that it's not worth risking our life.

If we're beaten then we die.

It's a dangerous bridge to cross.

「なんなら、俺が一人で倒してきてもいい」

　悩んでいると、ルイジェルドがそう提案した。

"If you'd like, I can go defeat it myself."

While I'm worrying over this, Ruijeld proposes as such.

「ルイジェルドさん。一人で倒せるんですか？」
「ああ。俺ひとりで十分だ」

　頼もしいセリフ。
　なんとかダッシュさんみたいだ。

"Ruijeld-san. Can you defeat it by yourself?"

"Yeah. I'm more than enough by myself."

How reliable. Kind of like Dasshu-san. [I don't get this reference. Dash-san?]

「じゃあ、エリスを守りながらでもいけますか？」
「いつもどおりだ。問題ない」

　Aランク相手にこの余裕。
　まあ、ルイジェルドがこう言うのなら、大丈夫だろう。
　よし。

"Then, can you do it while protecting Eris as well?"

"Any time. There's no problem."

Facing an A ranked enemy with such composure. Well then, since Ruijeld says it like that, then there's probably no problem.

「じゃあやりましょうか」

　決定した。

"Well then, shall we do it?"

I had decided.

　俺が魔術で遠距離攻撃し、近距離で二人が戦う。

The bullet had flown at ultra high speeds and pierced the cobra, exploding.

　赤喰大蛇は、クッと体をひねり、砲弾を避けた。
　回避されたのだ。

　偶然ではない。
　赤喰大蛇は飛んでくる砲弾を、明らかに見てから(・・・・)避けた。
　遠くの方で、砲弾が爆発した。

"Wha-!?"

The red food cobra had twisted it's body and avoided the bullet.

It was evaded.

It's not a coincidence. The red food cobra had completely seen through the bullet and dodged it. The shell had exploded far away.

「うそだろ……」

　先制攻撃に失敗。
　だが、うちの特攻隊は止まらない。
　ルイジェルドを先頭に、斜め後ろからエリスが追随する。
　いつもと陣形が違う。
　いつもはエリスが前のはずだ。

"No way..."

The preemptive attack was a failure.

Still, our attack squad didn't stop. Ruijeld as the vanguard and Eris following behind him. It's different from usual. Usually Eris

is in front.

「シャァ！」
「…………ふん！！」

　ルイジェルドが頭へと襲い掛かる。
　短槍を使った、いつも通りの打突。
　赤喰大蛇はその攻撃をスウェーの動作で避け、反動を利用してルイジェルドに噛み付く。
　噛まれれば一発で大穴が開きそうな牙を、ルイジェルドは軽く槍で弾いた。

　同時に、赤喰大蛇の後ろに回り込んだエリスが、尻尾に向かって剣を振るう。
　エリスの斬撃は、しかし切断には至らない。
　赤蛇の肉か鱗、あるいは両方が硬いのだ。

"Shaah!"

"...Hn!!"

Ruijeld attacks from head on. As usual, he thrusts witht he spear. The red food cobra avoids the attack with a sway, and bites at

Ruijeld in retaliation. Ruijeld repels with his spear those fangs that would leave a huge hole upon biting.

At the same time from behind the red food cobra, Eris swings her sword towards its tail. However, her sword fails to cut. Either

its scale or its flesh, or perhaps both is too tough.

「シャアアァ！」

　赤喰大蛇の気がエリスへと向く。
　その瞬間、エリスとルイジェルドがパッと離れる。
　一瞬の時間差を、俺の魔術が赤喰大蛇へと飛んでいく。

"Shaaah!"

The red snake cobra turns its attention to Eris. At that moment, Eris and Ruijeld are separated. In an instant, my magic flies

towards the snake.

Though thigns have gotten confused, our coordination still flows as normal.

"I missed again!?"

　しかし、赤喰大蛇はまたも避ける。
　先端を尖らせることで速度を増した砲弾は、
　赤喰大蛇の脇をすり抜け、背後の木を数本まとめて叩き折った。
　まただ、また見てから回避されたのだ。

Still, the red food cobra avoids again. The bullet that was faster than a spear had slipped just past the red food cobra, and

destroyed a few trees in the background. Again. Again, it was seen through and avoided.

　とはいえ、当たらなくても問題はない。
　ルイジェルドとエリスの波状攻撃。
　脳と心臓(きゅうしょ)を執拗に狙うルイジェルドと、
　尻尾から徐々に切り刻んで注意を逸らすエリス。
　たまに飛んでくる、当たれば痛いで済まない魔術。
　こちらのパターンは単調だが、そうそう対処できるものでもない。

Even so, even if it hadn't hit, there's still no problem. Ruijeld and Eris are attacking in waves. Ruijeld who persistently aims at

its heart (vitals) and Eris who continues to draw its attention to its tail. As well as the magic (that would hurt if it hit) that

I occasionally fire. Though its a simple pattern of attack, its not something you can hold off for long either.

　エリスを執拗に狙えば突破口も開けるだろうが、
　ルイジェルドのヘイト管理は完璧だ。
　赤喰大蛇は俺とエリスを放置せざるを得ない状況になっている。

Though it could have stubbornly aim at Eris and broken through her defence, Ruijeld's aggro control was perfect. It had become so

that the red food cobra couldn't help but leave Eris and I be.

　ルイジェルドと俺の攻撃は当たらない。
　だが赤喰大蛇は次第に疲労し、動きを鈍らせていく。

Ruijeld and my attacks won't hit. But the red food cobra is gradually tiring, and its movements are becoming dull.

　そして、ついに岩砲弾が蛇の胴体を捕らえた。

Then finally, one of my rock cannon shells pierces the snake in the abdomen.

　赤喰大蛇(レッドフードコブラ)の剥ぎ取りを終えた頃には、すっかり日が暮れていた。
　その日は、赤喰大蛇の肉で晩餐。
　どこが売れるのかわからなかったが、とりあえず牙を引っこ抜き、
　皮を剥いで絨毯のように丸めてある。
By the time we had done skinning the snake, the sun had set pretty far. For dinner that night we had red food cobra meat. Though

I'm not sure where we'd sell them, we had taken out its fangs and curled up in its skin like a carpet.

　クルトたちが探していたであろう卵も見つかった。
　だが、でかすぎて運べる要素がない。
　色々考えたが、割っておくことにした。
We found the eggs that Kuruto had probably been looking for as well, but since they were too big we couldn't carry them. After

considerings lots of ideas, we broke them.

　魔物を増やす行為は厳禁だそうだからな。
Since there seems to be a strict ban on increasing monster numbers, after all.

　ブレイズたちの死体は、売れそうなものを剥ぎとった後、
　焼いて埋葬しておいた。
　これをそのままにしておくと、エクスキューショナーになるんだろうか。
　ゾンビとしてよみがえる、という現象がイチマチ理解できない。

After taking what we could sell from the corpses of Brayz' team, we burnt them and buried them. Had we left them as is, they might

have become executioners. We can't understand the phenomena of corpses reviving into zombies.

[ichimachi? イチマチ?]

（それにしても、赤蛇は強かったな）
(At any rate, the red food cobra sure was strong)

　俺は先ほどの戦闘を思い出す。
　赤蛇に魔術を回避されたことを思い出す。
　回避だ。
　何度も回避された。
　最後に直撃弾を得るまでは、かすることさえほとんど無かった。

I recall the fight from just now.
I recall how it evaded my magic.
Evaded.
My bullets were evaded again and again.
Until the end, my shots hardly improved.   [★かすることさえほとんど無かった]

　考えてみれば、エクスキューショナーもそうだった。
　直撃だと思ったら避けられて、片腕だけを吹っ飛ばす結果になった。
　Bランク以上の魔物ともなると、魔術を回避するぐらいは出来るのか。

If I think about it, the executioner was like that too. When I thought it would be a direct hit, it only blew off the arm. It seems

that once you get to monsters above B rank, they can avoid my magic.

　赤蛇はAランクという話だ。
　ルイジェルドの槍も避けていた……が、
　あれは手加減していたからだろう。
　本気を出せば、一撃で仕留められたに違いない。
　エリスの剣を避けなかったのは、脅威度が低いから避ける必要もないと踏んだからか。

I was told that the red cobra was A ranked. Though it also evaded Ruijeld's spear... that was probably because he was going easy on

it. Had he been serious, there's no mistaking that he would've have brought it down with one his. Eris' attacks probably hit

because it had judged them to be of low danger and hence felt it was needless.

　しかし、この世界の生物は化物揃いだな。
　人族だって、魔術を受け流すことは出来るようだし、
　魔物は銃弾を見てから回避する。

Still, the living things in this world are all monsters, huh? It seems that even within the Human Race, there are those that can

ward off magic, and monsters can see through a bullet and evade it.

　Sランクの魔物となったら、岩砲弾が直撃しても無傷、なんて事も有り得るかもしれない。

If it was an S ranked monster, there's a probability that even if my stone cannon hit it, no damage would be done.

　恐ろしい事だ……。
　危険な場所にはなるべく近寄らないようにしよう。

How scary...

It'd be best to stay away from dangerous places.
