  1. 3.1 Barnardos Smartphone application
  2. A study from 2013 showed that over the course of the 2012/2013 year the number of people with smartphones doubled from 33% to roughly 60% ( ). As this number is very likely to have increased, and due to the fact that today many of the simple everyday functions that people perform, e.g. making bill payments, can now be done on one’s phone, there is an increasing importance for organisations to adapt to such changes in technology in order to stay ahead on par with competition ( ). The increase in smartphone usage and the theoretical idea of adapting to new technologies form the basis for the argument for a smartphone app creation. The application itself will be created with the function of promoting Barnardos and its values and goals, as well as creating a platform whereby future campaigns can be posted. The essential basic function of the application will be one which showcases Barnardos current and future campaigns, and gives people the option to donate money directly to the organisation, as well as giving people a general overview of the organisation and its aims of helping children throughout New Zealand. While these are the basic functions of the application, there are 3 other functions that will be implemented into the app that will be discussed in detail in the following sections. These are the quiz game, The Apprenticeship program and the implementation of individuals self-fundraising campaigns. A good example of a similar app is the iGreenpeace app ( ), which essentially serves a similar function of updating supporters with current campaigns, as well as having a free game of its own to entertain people.

  4. 3.1.1 How will the project be funded
  5. Out of the four proposed ideas in this report, the creation of this app will be the most expensive and likely require the most time to implement. Based on a rough estimate done by app developer Otreva ( ), to have the fully desired functionality of the application, that will allow for basic functionality as a campaign database and have the ability to receive payments (donations), as well as implement the plans that will be proposed (quiz game etc.) will cost $172,935 USD (Appendix 1), or roughly $240,000 NZD. While this is a significant cost, the fact that Barnardos is currently operating at a $700,000 surplus, means that there is room for funding of such a program. As this application is of significant importance (as it lays a basis for current and future campaigns/programs), it would be suggested that funding of this app is a top priority for Barnardos with any available surplus revenue. However, as it does mention in the report that much of the money from the current surplus will be used to pay off other ventures, it is important to list other potential ways of funding this product. If sufficient funds are able to be generated for the applications creation, the app itself will be able to pay itself off through the usage of ad revenue. This can be done through the usage of corporate partnerships (promoting likeminded businesses through the app) or using Google ads. As this method of funding would only occur after the creation and rollout of the app, other ways of funding include money created by the suggestions that will follow in the report, i.e. the quiz and the self-fundraising, as these programs specifically deal with the issue of fundraising for organisational activities.
