- [2016-05-19 14:01:40] <cmd102> Question from poppymoonray : Which of your stories was the most challenging to write, and why?
- [2016-05-19 14:03:42] <manen_lyset> If I'm not limited to just NoSleep stories, then I'd say it was "Isolation", a story that takes place in a bunker. It was challenging because it was a lot longer than the stories I was used to writing at that point in time. About 5 000 words versus my typical 1 500-2 000 word stories, and it featured a lone protagonist hanging around. Having no oth
- [2016-05-19 14:03:42] <manen_lyset> er characters to play off of made it hard to stay into the story.
- [2016-05-19 14:04:09] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : Is there any topic you wouldn't want to be used in horror?
- [2016-05-19 14:05:25] <manen_lyset> As a reader, no. As a writer, yeah. I don't like to do anything too controversial so I tend to go the safe route. Plus, my family reads my stories, so I try to keep it somewhat PG. :)
- [2016-05-19 14:06:21] <cmd102> Question from poppymoonray : Which story the most fun to write, and why?
- [2016-05-19 14:08:00] <manen_lyset> The Pigeons Around Here Aren't Real, hands down. It was an absolutely silly concept and I enjoyed every minute of it. I made myself laugh several times while writing it. I like taking ridiculous topics and breathing horror into them.
- [2016-05-19 14:08:29] <cmd102> Question from kneeod : Manen, how does such a mega sweetheart like you write such heinous things? Where did it come from? Where did it go? Where did it come from, cotton-eyed Joe?
- [2016-05-19 14:09:36] <manen_lyset> <3 Oh, you know. The demons that possess me every few days do most of my writing. They don't care about getting gory.
- [2016-05-19 14:09:54] <cmd102> Question from Xylonex : What is Sockpuppet_Rodriguez's favorite candy?
- [2016-05-19 14:10:55] <manen_lyset> He really likes Hot Lips. It's sweet. It's hot. It's cinnamon. He can wear them over his own mouth. What's not to love?
- [2016-05-19 14:11:07] <cmd102> Question from poppymoonray : which three Pokemon would you most like to be stranded on a desert island with and why?
- [2016-05-19 14:13:37] <manen_lyset> CHARIZARD CHARIZARD CHARIZARD. Because he's a freaking dragon and I could fly on him. Wartortoyle because he could provide me with cuddles, fishing, and fresh (albeit regurgitated water). And I guess maybe Arcanine so I could have a soft place to sleep. :3
- [2016-05-19 14:14:13] <cmd102> Question from _nuclearcorpus : How has your upbringing colored your writing?
- [2016-05-19 14:16:11] <manen_lyset> Well, I moved around a lot as a kid so I had to adapt to new surroundings and make new friends quickly. I got exposed to a lot of different people and places. It also meant I had to be OK with being alone sometimes. So I got the best of both worlds: new experiences I can write about, and a good imagination because sometimes I didn't have anyone to
- [2016-05-19 14:16:11] <manen_lyset> hang out with, so I ran around playing make-belief all on my lonesome.
- [2016-05-19 14:16:49] <cmd102> Question from kneeod : If you could gain superhuman abilities in one of your senses at the cost of permanently losing a different one, which would you choose?
- [2016-05-19 14:18:40] <manen_lyset> Arghh, that's a tough one. A really tough one. I need all of my senses, y'know. I suppose I'd enjoy heightening either my vision or my hearing. I'd sacrifice my taste in exchange for it, if I had no choice. I mean, I could sacrifice my sense of smell, but a lot of taste actually comes from smell, so I'd be losing two birds with one stone. Nuh-huh.
- [2016-05-19 14:18:58] <cmd102> Question from poppymoonray : If you could choose the way you died, what would you choose, and why?
- [2016-05-19 14:20:42] <manen_lyset> Having recently learned that diving into a volcano isn't quite as painless and badass as it's made out to be, I'll have to go with quietly dying in my sleep due to carbon monoxide poisoning. Why? Because obviously I don't want to suffer. Screw going out in a blaze of glory. I want it painless.
- [2016-05-19 14:21:12] <cmd102> Question from Xylonex : If you could make a homunculus by fusing any two nosleepers, who would you choose and why?
- [2016-05-19 14:22:07] <manen_lyset> I'd go with Xylonex and Purpleaquarius, because they're both so adorable that the result would have to be absolutely "totes adorbz to the max". ;D
- [2016-05-19 14:22:14] <cmd102> Question from theephemera : Have you ever scrapped a story you began?
- [2016-05-19 14:23:08] <manen_lyset> I've scrapped plenty of stories. Some halfway through, some after the first draft. Sometimes, a story just doesn't want to be told. Gotta listen to the story. It'll be ready when it's ready.
- [2016-05-19 14:23:21] <cmd102> Question from theephemera : Will you please send me your muffin recipe?
- [2016-05-19 14:24:07] <manen_lyset> Yes! I'm so sorry. When I got back to Canada, I checked it and saw it was written in french, so I realized I was going to have to translate it first and then send it to you. And then I forgot. I'll put it on my todo list, promise. :3
- [2016-05-19 14:24:21] <cmd102> Question from SirAyme : Are you ever planning on making Rodriguez a family or some friends?
- [2016-05-19 14:25:33] <manen_lyset> Absolutely. I've toyed with the idea of sending out Sockpuppet DYI kits for fun, but always forget when I'm about to ship something. On my end, however, I do think he deserves to have a few loved ones. I just need to "borrow" more of my dad's socks. Hahaha.
- [2016-05-19 14:25:51] <cmd102> Question from KPants : If I were to ask Rodriguez out on a date, would he accept?
- [2016-05-19 14:26:15] <manen_lyset> Yes. And he would show up looking so gosh darn handsome for you.
- [2016-05-19 14:26:25] <cmd102> Question from Sterbai : What's the scariest story you've ever seen on nosleep?
- [2016-05-19 14:28:03] <manen_lyset> That's a tough one... As much as I like horror, I'm not one to scare easily. Or at all. I'm more
- the kind to hear/read a scary story and marvel at how good the story is. The BEST I've read was "Scarecrow Corpse". It's absolutely amazing. I cannot recommend it enough.
- [2016-05-19 14:28:21] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : Are your works based on someone you know or events in your life?
- [2016-05-19 14:29:44] <manen_lyset> I never base my stories on people I know because I don't want to offend anyone. I sometimes slip in actual events, like the time I told a story about my super duper genuinely haunted car. Usually, though, you'll find that locations in my stories are places I've been to.
- [2016-05-19 14:29:58] <manen_lyset> Except that one story of my adventure at Deny's. Based on real events, including real people. xD
- [2016-05-19 14:30:05] <cmd102> Question from kneeod : Rodriguez has been kidnapped! The abductor demands that you recreate Dragonfly using Rodriguez as the narrator. Do you do it?
- [2016-05-19 14:31:56] <manen_lyset> "Dragonfly"??? I'm not hip enough with the lingo to understand what that means. HOWEVER--- the abductor clearly miscalculated. You see, to pay the ransom, I need the abductee. So I could just agree to his demands, get Roddy back, fly to another country and change out identities so we'll be safe again! <3
- [2016-05-19 14:32:09] <manen_lyset> *our
- [2016-05-19 14:32:23] <cmd102> Question from theephemera : You're locked in a room with a knife, a block of cheese, and a snake for 5 days but you don't know before hand the amount of time. What do you do with the knife?
- [2016-05-19 14:33:20] <manen_lyset> I cut the block of cheese up into little bits and quickly feed it to the snake because holy cow, I cannot deal with cheese. The smell of it will make me nauseous. Plus, the snake will probably be hungry and appreciate the food. We'll be best buds.
- [2016-05-19 14:33:36] <cmd102> Question from theephemera : Who are your two favorite monsters and which one would win in a fight?
- [2016-05-19 14:34:47] <manen_lyset> The ticklemonster and the Bonhomme Sept Heures (which is kind of like a boogieman). Obviously, the ticklemonster would win. No one can resist tickles!
- [2016-05-19 14:34:56] <cmd102> Question from Zyclin (sent by poppymoonray) : Do you bathe in maple syrup, or is that just your natural scent?
- [2016-05-19 14:35:27] <manen_lyset> I'm my natural scent. Maple syrup is extremely toxic and would corrode me to the bone.
- [2016-05-19 14:35:39] <cmd102> Question from Zyclin (sent by poppymoonray) : What color is the bedding in your guest room, and can Rebecca and I come live there?
- [2016-05-19 14:36:30] <manen_lyset> I believe it's grey. I don't go in there very often, so don't quote me on that. And you can come live with me any time, guys. :) I'll even get you new bedding.
- [2016-05-19 14:36:40] <cmd102> Question from poppymoonray : Why are you scared of even numbers?
- [2016-05-19 14:36:54] — manen_lyset shudders.
- [2016-05-19 14:37:22] <manen_lyset> Odd numbers are just so much nicer. There's symmetry in their asymmetry. Even numbers are just gross.
- [2016-05-19 14:37:37] <cmd102> Question from poppymoonray : Why are so many of your stories about birds?
- [2016-05-19 14:37:48] <manen_lyset> Plus, 8 ate nine. Wait no. That's not how the job goes...
- [2016-05-19 14:37:52] <manen_lyset> *erh joke goes
- [2016-05-19 14:38:44] <manen_lyset> Y'Know, I honestly think it's just a coincidence. That said, I really like flying...which is why I want a Charizard with me on the deserted island. Plus, birds are cool and mysterious. They make for great characters.
- [2016-05-19 14:38:55] <cmd102> Question from oqnet : what's your opinion on Trudeau beating people up in the house of commons?
- [2016-05-19 14:39:59] <manen_lyset> I don't follow the news so I haven't heard about that. That's a little surprising. He's young, but he doesn't strike me as a very violent guy. So I guess my opinion is "Huh, that's surprising."
- [2016-05-19 14:40:19] <manen_lyset> Bad Trudeau, bad!
- [2016-05-19 14:40:19] <cmd102> Question from Sterbai : What advice would you give to someone looking to write their first nosleep story?
- [2016-05-19 14:41:24] <manen_lyset> Write something that entertains YOU. Forget about everyone else, this is your story. If you love what you do, people will be able to see it and will love it, too.
- [2016-05-19 14:41:35] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : Do any of your stories have a message?
- [2016-05-19 14:42:50] <manen_lyset> If you take the first letter of every story I've written, it spells out a secret message. / Yes, a few of them do, but most of them don't. English teachers 150 years from now won't be analysing every little thing I've written searching for hidden meanings. Usually, what you see is what you get.
- [2016-05-19 14:43:11] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : How subtle do you personally believe a story must be to be considered horror?
- [2016-05-19 14:44:56] <manen_lyset> I don't think it has to be subtle at all. The great thing about horror is that it comes in so many different shapes and sizes. You can have that subtle, creeping fear, just like you can have a giant monster standing over you, oozing radioactive drool on your face. They're both equally as valid. That said, I personally prefer reading/hearing stories
- [2016-05-19 14:44:56] <manen_lyset> with more subtle horror.
- [2016-05-19 14:45:15] <cmd102> Question from KPants : Will you hold another raffle for just the candies? Because I need more of that in my life.
- [2016-05-19 14:46:10] <manen_lyset> Hahah, I was thinking of doing another raffle, but truth be told, the shipping fees broke the bank. :( So I think I'll hold off and see if the book sells first.
- [2016-05-19 14:46:19] <cmd102> Question from KPants : Favorite Disney movie?
- [2016-05-19 14:46:29] <manen_lyset> The Lion King!
- [2016-05-19 14:46:43] <cmd102> Question from kneeod : There's a button in front of you with a 50/50 chance of either granting you one wish of your choosing with no strings attached of any kind... Or horribly murdering you. Do you press it?
- [2016-05-19 14:47:11] <manen_lyset> I do not press it. I don't like those odds.
- [2016-05-19 14:47:17] <cmd102> Question from theephemera : What is your favorite narration? Doesn't have to be horror.
- [2016-05-19 14:48:25] <manen_lyset> My all time favorite narration is Peter Joseph Lewis' rendition of "The Pigeons Around Here Aren't Real". I mean, c'mon. It's Peter-freaking-Joseph-freaking-Lewis. I honestly can't read that story any more WITHOUT hearing his voice in my head.
- [2016-05-19 14:48:51] <cmd102> Question from poppymoonray : Did you ever catch the buzzard who stole your tire swing?
- [2016-05-19 14:49:12] <manen_lyset> Not yet, but I'll get him. Mark my words, I will get him!
- [2016-05-19 14:49:21] <cmd102> Question from poppymoonray : Would you rather: watch Andy sensually eat pizza, or watch me nibble on your book and Canadian stamps?
- [2016-05-19 14:50:23] <manen_lyset> Ughhhh do I have to choose? Both options are equally appealing! I'm sorry, Andy. But I have to go with the nibbling Poppy. Because it's more personal, y'know? It's my book and Canadian stamps!
- [2016-05-19 14:50:33] <cmd102> Question from poppymoonray : What is the most difficult aspect of writing horror?
- [2016-05-19 14:52:05] <manen_lyset> Figuring out what's scary and what's not. Like I said earlier, I'm not actually affected by horror very much, so all my stories are really just shots in the dark. I /hope/ they manage to scare people, but I don't have a magic formula for success. When is there enough horror? When isn't there enough? I don't know.
- [2016-05-19 14:52:49] <cmd102> Question from oqnet : do you ever worry when reading other stories that you might accidently repeat it down the road?
- [2016-05-19 14:55:04] <manen_lyset> Nah. I firmly believe that we could all start with the exact same general concept, but come up with equally awesome and scary stories. Of course, I'd never do it on purpose. But, even if you were sequestered your entire life and wrote a completely, 100% original story, you'd still get someone in the comments saying, "Oh, this reminds me of X-book o
- [2016-05-19 14:55:04] <manen_lyset> r X-movie." No point worrying about it.
- [2016-05-19 14:55:21] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : Who is your favourite horror author and why?
- [2016-05-19 14:57:14] <manen_lyset> Kris Mallory. His stories have so much life in them. He doesn't post often, but his stories are just amazing. Original concepts, endearing characters, and plot twists that will leave you reeling. A close second would be deadnspread. He's got an amazing mastery of human behavior and manages to write really dark stuff without having to resort to gore
- [2016-05-19 14:57:14] <manen_lyset> . I really admire them both.
- [2016-05-19 14:57:42] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : What do you feel about being PC (politically correct) within horror?
- [2016-05-19 15:00:23] <manen_lyset> I think you should be true to your characters. If the story is told in the first person and you've got a biggoted character, then he should act like a biggot, political correctness be damned. These people exist in the real world and pretending they don't won't make any difference. That said, if there's that kind of character in your story, there sh
- [2016-05-19 15:00:23] <manen_lyset> ould be a good reason why. I wouldn't include a character that likes to push people off their wheelchairs if pushing people off wheelchairs wasn't somehow relevant to the plot.
- [2016-05-19 15:15:50] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : Do you have any fun Halloween experiences you can tell us?
- [2016-05-19 15:17:00] <manen_lyset> Welllll, one time, when I lived in Germany, I went into this apartment and there was some sort of scary maze and I had to dig my hand into something juicy and gross but it was super-awesome and I loved it because HALLOWEEN IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!
- [2016-05-19 15:17:04] <manen_lyset> (I love Autumn.)
- [2016-05-19 15:17:15] <cmd102> Question from Sterbai : what's the creepiest place you've ever visited?
- [2016-05-19 15:19:56] <manen_lyset> A house I lived in for a good 5-7 years. The first time my parents took my sis and I to visit it, the light fixture on the first floor was leaking. What was supposed to be my bedroom was painted black and there were poems about suicide written in crayola all over the walls. Plus, the previous tenants disappeared one day without paying and were neve
- [2016-05-19 15:19:56] <manen_lyset> r heard from again. The whole place had a really dark feel to it. I did NOT understand why we were moving there. I mean, they repainted and fixed everything up before we moved in, but still. Creepy. Doesn't help that I saw a ton of weird stuff in that house until the day I moved. But that's a story for another day.
- [2016-05-19 15:20:19] <cmd102> Question from cravethepasta : I just read the scarecrow corpse and wow... What was your favorite part about it?
- [2016-05-19 15:21:23] <manen_lyset> I love the mystery of it all! The fact that you don't know if the scarecrow corpse is a result of some government testing or if they were aware of it and trying to keep it secret to keep people from panicking. The best thing about the story is the fact that we just don't know!
- [2016-05-19 15:21:37] <cmd102> Question from ThrowAwatSalesman : What motivates you to keep writing?
- [2016-05-19 15:24:02] <manen_lyset> Honestly? I write because I HAVE to. I've written almost every day in some form or another since I was in high school. It's how I unwind. I get cranky when I don't write. Even if NoSleep didn't exist, I'd still write in one way or another. I have a NEED that needs to be filled. What keeps me motivated to post on NoSleep, however, is all the feedbac
- [2016-05-19 15:24:02] <manen_lyset> k I get. There's nothing better than having someone approve of something you wrote and being kind enough to take the time and tell you they enjoyed it. It's like getting a hug RIGHT IN THE BRAIN. I keep at it because I love people's reactions.
- [2016-05-19 15:24:24] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : What is your favorite horror movie?
- [2016-05-19 15:25:53] <manen_lyset> Horror movies aren't really my thing. They rely on jumpscares instead of actual horror. The only movie in recent memory that has left me feeling rattled was "Take Shelter". I'd definitely recommend it. It's not your average horror movie. Not even sure if it really counts as horror. But it's got that nice, subtle, tense fear to it. It's excellent.
- [2016-05-19 15:26:19] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : What do you believe is the greatest example of horror comedy?
- [2016-05-19 15:26:37] <manen_lyset> Evil Dead!
- [2016-05-19 15:26:44] <cmd102> Question from TanjaSimone : What scares you the most, people or monsters?
- [2016-05-19 15:27:05] <manen_lyset> Definitely people. (And sink holes. uughghghgh sink holeeees.)
- [2016-05-19 15:27:11] <cmd102> Question from poppymoonray : What were the best and worst things about writing a novella instead of short stories?
- [2016-05-19 15:27:47] <manen_lyset> Best thing: having time to develop characters. Worst: having to read the whole thing. So many wooooords.
- [2016-05-19 15:28:01] <cmd102> Question from kneeoq : Why am I sticky?
- [2016-05-19 15:28:20] <manen_lyset> You know what you did. Rodriguez knows what you did. You're both sticky.
- [2016-05-19 15:28:33] <cmd102> Question from cravethepasta : I know you said you don't get scared easily, but has something you've either read or watched really disturbed you?
- [2016-05-19 15:29:31] <manen_lyset> That movie I mentioned earlier (Take Shelter) has disturbed me. I watched it with my sister and afterwards, she wanted to go to bed. And I was seriously rattled. I ended up chatting with my fellow nosleepers for about an hour so I could get it out of my head and get a good night's rest.
- [2016-05-19 15:29:41] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : What do you think will be the next bandwagon of NoSleep?
- [2016-05-19 15:30:12] <manen_lyset> Stories involving waffle demons.
- [2016-05-19 15:30:21] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : Do you look to your own phobias to find subject matter? Are your stories the products of nightmares, childhood experiences, fantasies?
- [2016-05-19 15:31:41] <manen_lyset> Aside from being freaked out by sinkholes, I don't really have any phobias, so I'd say 'no'. My stories are products of an over-active imagination. A few of them springboard from real experiences, but most of them are just me suddenly getting struck by the inspiration bug.
- [2016-05-19 15:31:57] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : What do you think about horror games?
- [2016-05-19 15:33:01] <manen_lyset> I'm not a fan. They're mostly first person shooters, which really aren't my genre. Now, if someone wants to develop an adventure-type horror game à la Legend of Zelda, I will be all for it.
- [2016-05-19 15:33:19] <cmd102> Question from TanjaSimone : What is your main advice to people who would like to make a story as creepy as possible?
- [2016-05-19 15:34:22] <manen_lyset> Leave some questions unanswered, let the reader draw their own conclusions. There's nothing scarier than the unknown.
- [2016-05-19 15:34:25] <cmd102> Question from Jenn-Ra : Who would win in a fight: Mecha Abraham Lincoln or Jesus riding a T. rex!
- [2016-05-19 15:34:45] <manen_lyset> Mecha Lincoln.
- [2016-05-19 15:35:44] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : What do you think is the next evolution of horror?
- [2016-05-19 15:37:06] <manen_lyset> Ok so there's this helmet you can wear, right? It uses some sort of electromagnetic thing to make you feel like something's standing behind you. Y'know when you're alone but you feel someone's presence? That helmet and induce that feeling. So let's mass-produce that helmet and package it with some VR horror videogames. Now THAT's evolution.
- [2016-05-19 15:37:21] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : What do you listen to, if anything, while you write?
- [2016-05-19 15:38:25] <manen_lyset> I listen to Brandon Boone's music a lot.
- [2016-05-19 15:38:44] <cmd102> Question from Jenn-Ra : Do you ever write anything non horror?
- [2016-05-19 15:39:25] <manen_lyset> I do. :D I do text-based RPing in a modern scifi universe. And, more recently, in an X-Men universe. Good times!
- [2016-05-19 15:40:11] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : If you were a scooby doo villain, which one would you be?
- [2016-05-19 15:40:31] <manen_lyset> I don't know who the villains are. I always hated that show. Sorry!
- [2016-05-19 15:41:30] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : Do you believe in the birthday skeleton?

- [2016-05-19 15:42:44] <cmd102> Question from _NuclearCorpus : The next few horror movies (unfriended, friend request, etc) seem centered around the topic of social media being the horror, do you think this has any kind of leg to stand on as an actual device of horror?
- [2016-05-19 15:43:26] <manen_lyset> I want to change my answer. Yes, I wholeheartedly believe in the birthday skeleton.
- [2016-05-19 15:44:56] <manen_lyset> I think so. People put so much information on social media. Sometimes, too much. There are so many ACTUAL horrific stories that stem from things that have happened due to social media, so using it as a plot device is perfectly fine. The only thing is that your story/book/movie will be really dated a few years from now.

- [2016-05-19 15:48:44] <cmd102> Question from cmd102 : Have you ever considered writing a story about an evil Quebecois mounty terrorizing a hockey team?

- [2016-05-19 15:56:35] <manen_lyset> 1 000 000. Even though I'm still struggling with it. There's an issue with the spine. T__T; But any time I want to fix it, they pull it from sale until they have time to review it, so...either I let people have the spine where the covers bleed over, or I prevent it from being sold.
- [2016-05-19 15:56:48] <cmd102> Question from oqnet : what's your favorite hockey team and why do you think they didn't make the playoffs?

- [2016-05-19 16:00:46] <manen_lyset> Keep posting, try new things, don't get discouraged. If someone says something negative, even if they're being extremely rude about it, try to see if there's a lesson to be learned. (Obviously "U sux" doesn't really count in this case.) But never get discouraged. Just keep at it! :D I believe in you!
