  1. The reason Christians trust Jesus and the Bible,  is the evidence.
  2. Some of this evidence, as you while readin may point out is not sufficient to believe, but it is a good solid start:
  3.
  4. Historical evidence for the New Testament:
  5.
  6. • At least 24,000 manuscripts, compared to say about a few for other notable figures e.g. Plato or Caesar (only approximately 2 manuscripts dating at least 1.5 centuries after the events)
  7. • Written 40-70 years (we have complete manuscripts back to about 70 years after Jesus was here on the Earth) compared to at least a century for other figures including historical and religious figures e.g. Buddha and again Plato, Caesar.
  8. • Not to mention they also used oral tradition, but the number of manuscripts that are almost the same shows it was faithfully passed down*
  9. • Other historical accounts e.g. Tacitus, Josephus, verify that Jesus existed, and most historians agree that Jesus existed and was crucified. New evidence has been found recently, of an account of a miracle of Jesus (healing a sick person) from a non-Biblical source.
  10. • Luke, for instance was a doctor and historian, so he made sure that he used eyewitness accounts and reliable first-hand sources.
  11.
  12.
  13. Real evidence for the Death and Resurrection of Jesus:
  14.
  15. • Jesus predicted his death three times and intentionally went to Jerusalem, despite the knowledge that if he stayed there, he would be killed because of the jealousy of the Pharisees (religious Jewish folk).
  16. • Jesus by dying on the cross fulfilled the Scriptures that were written about 1000 years before the event. For example Isaiah 53 is a direct reference to Jesus, that only now as we look back on his death, we understand how the Old Testament points to Jesus. Even Genesis 3 points to a time when someone will come and crush Satan’s head.
  17. • Jesus actually died. The description of Jesus’ death particularly in John’s account is not only surprising medically accurate but also consistent. Jesus was at the near verge of death prior to the cross, and some scholars have even suggested that heart failure (or some other critical organ) was the cause of his death. The soldier’s spear pierced his side and then, blood and water flowed out.
  18. • Jesus was buried in a tomb, sealed shut. The tombstone itself had to be rolled down a groove or something so not only was it heavy to move, it would have been impossible to push up the hill.
  19. • The body was not there. Jesus’ resurrection was a bodily resurrection. This means he isn’t some spirit floating out into space or wherever, that Jesus actually ate and dined with his disciples. Thomas, actually felt his hand according to the accounts in the Gospels.
  20. • There are 4 accounts, they may look the same but each differs on minor details. Thus it was unlikely that they wrote the accounts at the same time together, but wrote their accounts differently. Each also has a different audience, for example Matthew wrote towards a Jewish audience. So like each text it is interpreted understanding the context, audience and purpose, for instance John’s purpose was so that you may know that Jesus is the son of God.
  21. • The disciples of Jesus died for what they believed in, in the cruellest way possible, beheaded, crucified upside-down. If they had for instance made up the fact of his resurrection, when questioned and faced with death, they would have certainly revealed the truth, but their persistence is great evidence.
  22. • The first people to notice the event were women, now this is in a society where men’s testimony was superior to women’s superiority, in fact women weren’t allowed to testify in court (and yes they did have courts back then). So why would write a story where the women are the main character (apart from Jesus of course), it wouldn’t be appealing at all.
  23. • The details, for instance in Marks Gospel, the women were wondering who would open the tomb and yet didn’t both to ask say Peter or another man to help them roll away the stone.
  24.
  25. That is some of the evidence. Some lawyers have stated that the evidence for the New Testament and the evidence for Jesus’ resurrection would stand better in a court of law, then some of the cases they have dealt with.
