  1. 1. Pick a Pokemon to build around.
  2. 2. Decide whether you want to make your team more offensively or defensively oriented.
  3. a. Offensively: Figure out what the Pokemon you're building around struggles to beat, pick your next Pokemon using something that beats its counters.
  4. b. Defensively: Figure out your Pokemon's weaknesses, pick 1 or 2 Pokemon to take on threats of that type.
  5. 3. Continue with this process until you are 3-4 Pokemon into your team.
  6. 4. Ask yourself if you have Stealth Rock, a need for hazard control, ways to beat fast Pokemon such as Sceptile, Swellow, Archeops, and Tauros. If you notice any glaring type weaknesses on your team try to patch them up while also satisfying one of the other 3 points.
  7. 5. Repeat step 4 until you have 5 Pokemon.
  8. 6. Ask yourself how you see your team playing, do you have a goal in mind? It can be a simple goal (i.e. set up hazards, keep them up, break opponents team with set-up sweepers), or a more complex goal (eliminate fighting-type checks through pursuit and offensive pressure, in order to secure a sweep with [insert fighting type])
  9. 7. Make edits to your team based on things you struggle against throughout testing; however, don't be too quick to change something. Make sure your team is actually weak to it, rather than you playing poorly against it.
