新発田勝成は今年入省したばかりの、防衛省の職員だ。定期的に休日出勤を強いられるとはいえ勤務は概ね規則 的だが、学生のように長い冬休みはない。今日も新人に与えられる充実したーー
雑多な、とも言うーー仕事を終えて、マンションへ戻ってきたところだった。
Shibata Katsushige had just entered the Ministry of Defense as a staff member this year. Although the job required for them to periodically report to work on their day off, in general, their winter break was not as long as students. Today as well they made sure to give the new guy full day’s work.
まるでそのタイミングを見計らっていたように、ヴィジホンの呼び出し音が鳴った。

玄関で帰宅した彼を出迎えた琴鳴がリビングへ戻ろうとするのを制止して、勝成は壁面埋め込み式のターミナル を操作した。

「父さん…何か御用ですか？」

ディスプレイに現れたのは、三日前に会ったばかりの父親、四葉分家の一つ、新発田家当主の新発 田理だった。

長くなるということだな、と勝成は判断して、ディスプレイと正対する位置のソファへ腰を下ろし た。
身長百八十八センチ、体重八十キロという事務職にはもったいないような体格を誇る勝成に市販のソファセット は少し狭い。だが勝成は慣れているのか、ソファと応接テーブルの間に長い足を差し込んで器用に体を落ち着か せた。
Katsushige judged that this will take long and sat down on the sofa directly across from the display. The sofa set was a little narrow for Katsushige who was proud of his 180cm, 80kg frame which was a waste for an office worker.
『勝成、仕事の方はどうだ』

勝成の父親は武断派気質で、こんな風に口ごもるのは珍しいと言える。それだけ、言い出しにくい用件なのだろ う。

す。たとえ分家当主が一致して私を次期当主に推し たところで、一族の支持を得られるとは思えません。その程度のことは、父さんにも分かっている はずだ」

勝成には父の真意が分からなかった。当主を継承するのが早過ぎるというなら理解できる。だが後継者として指 名することに、何の不都合があるのだろうか。

理の顔から表情が消えた。動揺を隠す為という意図もあったかもしれない。だがその無表情の仮面には、昨日今 日作られたものではない、何年にもわたって蓄積された情念のが澱が付着しているように勝成には 見えた。

説得は無意味だと、勝成は覚った。
Katsushige realized that persuading him was useless.
「ーー私は何をすれば良いのですか？」
“ーーwhat would you have me do”?”
自分にできるのは、無意味な同士討ちを避けることだけだと勝成は心に決めた。

『既に真柴と静が足止めに動いている』

「黒葉殿は動いていないのですか？」

勝成の質問は以外感によるものだった。真柴家も静家も諜報工作は専門ではない。能力的に他の十師族と同程度 のことはできるだろうが、四葉一族における諜報工作の専門家は黒葉家だ。足止め工作という微妙なさじ加減を 要求される仕事に黒葉家が絡んでいないのは不自然に思われた。
