  1. Biological vs. Social forces
  2.
  3. The classic nature vs. nurture. When I hear you discuss the massive school shootings and one person says “it’s because he is a guy!” Your response is a version of “it’s because he has mental health issues—that’s what needs attention.” Then your opposition fishes and can’t quite disagree because you’re actually arguing two different issues. What if it was 50/50? 50 percent toxic masculinity, 50 percent mental health disorders. Even that wouldn’t explain the extreme gender skew that men are the ones doing malicious and violent behaviors. So what if it was 80/20 (in mental health’s favor). Solving twenty percent of an issue is awesome! You are getting very upset at “hyper/radical feminists” “hijacking” social issues when in reality it’s a few social media posts and a sociological perspective on why men(yes, majority men) are shooting innocent people.

  5. It’s not the penis, it’s the social schema of a man.
  6.
  7. Movies, video games, whatever. You see men conquering their biggest troubles. Women? They wait. They wait for a man to save them in romantic comedies, adventure games, and action films. Can you please accept that this being majority of media consumption has at least some impact on our daily lives? You’re right, not every single dude has this urge solve their problems with violence or rape. But it’s actually encouraged in our media. “Boys will be boys” mentality teaches us that when we can’t solve problem we have to figure it out. Can’t win the video game? Push your friends’ controller out of their hand. Can’t win the argument? Speak louder. Can’t live up to frat dudes calling you a virgin? Actually rape a woman. The frustration in “figuring it out” leads to very poor problem solving skills because we are expecting to overcome our plights. Yes it’s the slippery slope concept, but the rape part is actually happening. So a group of sociologists decided to sit down and try to use gender roles as a way to explain this, and hopefully fix it. Please don’t be against the cause of trying to stop things we can all agree are terrible.

  9. I’m gonna rape you.

  11. You’re choosing to abstract “rape” in the same likeness as kill, demolish, annihilate etc. But both genders don’t have to worry about getting killed every day in America. In America (especially big cities,) women actually worry about walking to their car at night. So does the word itself trigger an emotional response when you use it? Probably not, but using rape instead of annihilate is almost a deliberate way of making kill or annihilate a gender topic—because women get raped WAY more than men. Sure the 1 in 6 statistic is bull shit, but rape is a very lopsided gender issue, making it fucked up for a man to say to a woman “I’m gonna rape you in World of Tanks (hhhhhehe.)” That’s like saying “I’m gonna put you in a wheel chair after this Mount Your Friends match” to a person with a handicapped mom. It’s just too specific and mean.
