  10. 3 (old 4) integrated R/L/S, academic text and lecture - 30/60
  11. 4 (old 6) integrated L/S, academic lecture - 20/60
  12. (Remember: old questions 1 and 5 were removed from the test)
  13. ---
  14. In task 3, the background information and important definitions are given in the text, whereas in task 4 they’re usually explained at the beginning of the listening.
  15. - When you listen, there are three main things you should note:
  16. - what is the topic? what is said about the topic in general?
  17. - what is the first point?
  18. - what is the second point?
  19. You can organize your response like this:
  20. 1 Introduction: summarize what the speaker says about the main topic
  21. 2 Lead-in: state what kind of points the professor makes (“The professor gives two examples of visual elements.”)
  22. 3 First point: “First, she talks about color.”
  23. 4 Detail/example: “Some colors like red are…”
  24. 5 Second point: “Then she talks about texture.”
  25. 6 Detail/exapmle: “In painting, texture means…”
  26. (7 Conclusion - if you have time)
  27. ---
  28. Sometimes in task 3 or 4, the professor describes a single experiment or study, rather than distinct examples. In this case, the two “points” can be the method and the results.
  29. “The professor describes a study. In the study, people…. At the end, ….”
  30. Another option is, for experiments with two groups of subjects, to describe one group for each point.
  31. ---
  32. Record your responses to ETS 1.5 and ETS 2.2 and 2.3
  33. Set timers for 20 seconds and 60 seconds.
  34. ---
  35. You should listen again (and again) to your recorded responses and make note of things like:
  36. - Grammar and vocabulary mistakes (you could try to write down everything exactly as you said it, and then correct the writing mistakes).
  37. - Timing (how many seconds did you spend on the introduction and on each main point?) - Especially if you don’t finish in time or if you have silence at the end.
  38. ---
  39. *They made a new research. -> They did new research.
  40. ---
  41. Lateral thinking puzzles - ask yes/no questions to figure out the correct explanation
  42. Acting on an anonymous phone call, the police raid a house to arrest a suspected murderer. They don't know what he looks like but they know his name is John and that he is inside the house. The police enter and see a carpenter, a lorry driver, a mechanic and a fireman all playing poker. Without hesitation or communication of any kind, they immediately arrest the fireman. How do they know they've got their man?
  43. ---
  44. There was a donkey alone on one side of the river and on the other there were some delicious carrots. The river was very wide and deep, so the donkey couldn’t jump over it, and so long he couldn’t walk around it. There was no bridge or boat and he couldn’t fly and he couldn’t swim. So how did he get across?
  45. ---
  46. He walked on the river. It was frozen.
