&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; the first half of your childhood was as normal as it gets. you lived in a cozy house with your big brother &mdash; anthony &mdash;&nbsp;mom, &amp; dad. you sat down to the table at dinner &amp; slurped spaghetti, sauce splattered on your cheeks. mom got mad sometimes, but mostly everyone found it hilarious. &amp; that was all you needed. laughs with your small family and food spattered faces.</p>
<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &mdash;&mdash;&mdash; but sometimes you don&rsquo;t know what you have till it&rsquo;s gone.</p>
<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; all it takes is one night. one night for your whole life to be stolen away from you. you&rsquo;re sitting at the table, eating tuna casserole. &nbsp;you pick at it &amp; make faces because you would much rather have a slice of pepperoni pizza. &nbsp;but you eat it anyway, because your mom promises you a slice of cake if you finish everything on your plate.</p>
<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &amp; then you hear something strange from outside. &nbsp;it almost sounds like a roar. &nbsp;your tiny heart begins to thump beneath your ribcage &nbsp;; &nbsp;but your dad insists it&rsquo;s just the wind. &nbsp;so you continue to pick at the casserole, your cheek in your other hand.</p>
<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; it&rsquo;s not until it sounds like the noise is right outside your window do you look up at your daddy &amp; beg him to get rid of the monster. &nbsp;&amp; your mom asks too. &nbsp;so, with reluctance, he goes to the door to check out the noise. &nbsp;you even notice him reach for something ( a gun?? ) before leaving.</p>
<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; there&rsquo;s an eternity of silence before you hear it. &nbsp;a howl. &nbsp;the sound sends shivers down your bones. &nbsp;then your dad finally bursts through the door. &nbsp;he shouts &amp; shouts, telling your mom to hide you &amp; your brother so you&rsquo;ll be safe.</p>
<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; you freeze. &nbsp;you have no idea what&rsquo;s going on &amp; now you&rsquo;re absolutely terrified. &nbsp;you call out for your daddy, you just want him to be safe. &nbsp;but your mom hurriedly shoves you &amp; anthony up the stairs &amp; into the nearest closet. &nbsp;she kisses your head &amp; you beg her to stay with you, because you&rsquo;re scared, but she leaves anyway. &nbsp;she has to make sure your dad is okay.</p>
<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; hands are clapped over your ears in an attempt to block out the noise bellowing from downstairs. &nbsp;your muscles are tense &amp; you can do nothing but shake.</p>
<p>then you notice your brother&rsquo;s disappeared. &nbsp;it takes everything you can not to shriek in terror. &nbsp;the only one who you thought could protect you. &nbsp;&amp; he&rsquo;s gone. &nbsp;you feel numb. &nbsp;you are frozen. &nbsp;your bottom is glued to the floor &amp; the noises pierce your eardrums.</p>
<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; after what seems like a lifetime, you lift your hands from your ears. &nbsp;it&rsquo;s gone silent. but you can&rsquo;t seem to bring yourself to leave the closet. &nbsp;you&rsquo;re too scared the monster is still there so you remain frozen in that spot.</p>
<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; a few hours later, though, the doorknob begins to jiggle &amp; you panic. &nbsp;but the one on the other side of the door is your nonna. &nbsp;that&rsquo;s when your first tears begin tumble down your cheek. &nbsp;you leap for your grandmother &amp; wrap your arms around her neck, sobs wracking your every breath.</p>
<p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; <em>you&rsquo;re safe now</em>.</p>

<h3>i. storm for skin</h3>
