- Singular “they” has always been used for indefinite or unknown people. It’s older than singular “you”:
- “Someone is at the door. I wonder what they want.”
- The newer usage is “they” for particular, known people of unknown or nonbinary gender.
- “I talked to Jordan yesterday. They just got new job.”
