  1. [9:05:57 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: ide/theory: they shoved the server into skaia
  2. [9:06:08 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: it's not a ring server
  3. [9:06:10 PM] Impern: more skaiaservers yes
  4. [9:06:33 PM] SHITTY TASTE IN ANIME: (Homefree is technically skaiaserver, so that is sort of established as a thing)
  5. [9:06:40 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: heh
  6. [9:06:49 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: that's supporting evidence then, probably
  7. [9:07:04 PM] Bobbin: hrmmm would that affect whether we could do other and angel corruption stuffs on the memo?
  8. [9:07:20 PM] Bobbin: i've forgotten so much of 'how skaian server works'
  9. [9:07:25 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: there were... proposals/abstract unimplemented ideas in previous RV for distinct cultures of 'skaiaserver/skaiatravel' and 'ringserver/ringtravel'
  10. [9:07:42 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: in terms of which ones each community was used to using, thought was less risky, had institutional knowledge for, etc.
  11. [9:08:11 PM] Bobbin: also, this might present a slight problem in that we've been at least having characters assume ring-hosting and such
  12. [9:08:31 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: yeah
  13. [9:08:36 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: we'd have to retcon that
  14. [9:08:58 PM] Bobbin: with i think skaiahosting lllless known? i'm unsure if we changed that, would we have expected our character to have acted differently, beyond what's retconnable, or would it still be managable?
  15. [9:13:02 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: I think the major thing about Skaiahosting is that there's /nobody to bargain with/
  16. [9:13:28 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: the rules for ringhosting are arguably simpler: you shove a server into the Ring, it gets too big, it gets corrupted; or you can bargain with the squid to keep it unmolested.
  17. [9:13:39 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: for skaiahosting... I imagine that your server basically exists on Skaia's sufferance
  18. [9:13:46 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: you shoot your server into the blue and hope
  19. [9:14:02 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: and people have had to experiment as to what configurations, signal types, etc. Skaia won't quietly destroy
  20. [9:14:50 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: (tip: if you're using any configurations based on Sburban hardware, even if it's reverse-engineered from ancient technology you've had for thousands of years on your planet, you're basically out)
  21. [9:15:18 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: (so people have had to go as far as /inventing a transistor with a novel substrate/, for example)
  22. [9:15:39 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: obv. feel free to critique this as desired
  23. [9:16:56 PM] SHITTY TASTE IN ANIME: I always interpreted skaiahosting as skaia being more like... sending signals using skaia as a channel, while the server itself is maintained in-session (this is, at the least, the way I designed the concept for Homefree's servers.)
  24. [9:17:15 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: possibly, but don't sessions decay?
  25. [9:17:24 PM] SHITTY TASTE IN ANIME: yep
  26. [9:17:33 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: also, timetrav
  27. [9:17:37 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: how would skaian timetrav work
  28. [9:17:54 PM] SHITTY TASTE IN ANIME: (Homefree has a way around this that I haven't gotten to actually... show off yet due to not being around)
  29. [9:17:56 PM] Impern: whereas i always took it more as
  30. [9:17:59 PM] Impern: you shove it into skaia
  31. [9:18:01 PM] Impern: and it sits there
  32. [9:18:18 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: I imagine the /principle/ would be similar to that of ring timetrav, have someone to bundle the skeins of time properly, but... a lot of the implementation details would be fundamentally different
  33. [9:18:28 PM] SHITTY TASTE IN ANIME: well, vagueness leads to alternate interpretations, I suppose?
  34. [9:18:38 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: kinda like 'ok you've worked on motorcycles for ten years. HERE NOW FIX A JET ENGINE'
  35. [9:18:48 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: yeah? they're rotatey things but they work basically totally differently
  36. [9:18:57 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: kinda like that
  37. [9:19:51 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: and we've got our jet engine mechanics on the other side who are like 'what, me, fix motorcycle engines? what the fuck? why would you even /want/ a motorcycle, it'll just splatter you across the road at 50mph and you don't even have a /cockpit/'
  38. [9:20:20 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: I think this analogy got away from me
  39. [9:21:25 PM] SHITTY TASTE IN ANIME: a lil bit
  40. [9:22:02 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: I mean this is mostly because I think it'd be hilarious for everyone to be using PCs to run Sburb and stuff, but no PCs will survive in Skaia because they're Sburb-compatible and contain Sburb-related hardware, so someone has to dig out their old powerpc or mainframe or something from the basement and then we have Retro Computing Time
  41. [9:22:17 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: retro computing time is awesome
  42. [9:22:53 PM] Impern: so what you're basically saying is
  43. [9:22:56 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: 'do we even /have/ a chat server that we can run on a c64' 'uh... you could try to put together an IRC server'
  44. [9:23:12 PM] Impern: you can't put a server in Skaia
  45. [9:23:12 PM] Impern: but a fax modem? SURE
  46. [9:23:14 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: and then we have an IRC server instead of the nifty stuff that they wanted to originally run
  47. [9:23:15 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: yep
  48. [9:23:45 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: this also neatly explains why we have IRC instead of, like, Sburban Facebook
  49. [9:24:04 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: Sburban Facebook simply wouldn't run even if you had the code because it depends on computer architectures that Skaia doesn't like
  50. [9:24:14 PM] SHITTY TASTE IN ANIME: It does also mean we have to retcon homefree out of the setting, I think.
  51. [9:24:27 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: I dunno, you could have Bash code it de novo and it /might/ squeak by
  52. [9:24:38 PM] Bobbin: :T
  53. [9:24:45 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: bobbin do you not like this
  54. [9:24:59 PM] Bobbin: oops that is more of a 'thinking' :T than a displeased :T
  55. [9:25:02 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: ah
  56. [9:25:02 PM] Bobbin: though
  57. [9:25:14 PM] SHITTY TASTE IN ANIME: from a "that'd be hilarious" standpoint I like it
  58. [9:25:15 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: like I said: tell me if you hate it
  59. [9:25:30 PM] Bobbin: i'm /kinda/ leaning 'why not just dump server in a bubble like we had the old time' for simplicity's sake
  60. [9:25:32 PM] Impern: i find the idea of intersession faxing hilarious, really
  61. [9:25:39 PM] Impern: somebody out there must do that
  62. [9:25:41 PM] SHITTY TASTE IN ANIME: from a "We can expand on this in universe" standpoint I am quite eh
  63. [9:25:43 PM] Keleviel: I do not computer knowledge enough to have much of an opintion
  64. [9:25:46 PM] Keleviel: Opinion
  65. [9:25:47 PM] Bobbin: (im a little lost with the retrotech stuff yeah)
  66. [9:26:12 PM] Hannah Silver (Dove): (same)
  67. [9:26:16 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: Honestly it was mostly 'ok what would be the restriction on putting servers into Skaia, like the restriction on putting servers into the Ring is the squid'
  68. [9:26:22 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: and then 'how would that restriction work exactly'
  69. [9:26:26 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: and then intersession fax modems
  70. [9:27:01 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: this also neatly precludes Food Hack 2.0 from existing because you simply can't send the code through Skaia because it's Sburb-compatible
  71. [9:27:12 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: and Skaia won't let you send anything Sburb-compatible through
  72. [9:27:16 PM] Impern: ...
  73. [9:27:18 PM] Impern: actually
  74. [9:27:23 PM] Impern: how do you plug a phone line into skaia
  75. [9:27:33 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: hmm
  76. [9:27:34 PM] Impern: do you need to use visual static from the clouds instead of audio?
  77. [9:27:46 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: you alchemize a REALLY BIG spool and attach a rocket to the plug?
  78. [9:27:46 PM] Impern: thats not really a fax line any more that's more trending fibre optics
  79. [9:27:49 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: ooh
  80. [9:27:49 PM] Impern: ...
  81. [9:27:53 PM] Impern: the clouds have wifi
  82. [9:27:56 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: ahahahaha
  83. [9:28:12 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: 'the clouds have wifi that's why the kids have internet service in the incipisphere'
  84. [9:28:15 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: perfect
  85. [9:28:28 PM] SHITTY TASTE IN ANIME: yeah I was going with "you are basically doing the reverse of how you get internet in the medium" for... how stuff gets transmitted
  86. [9:28:30 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: visual static from the clouds is a great idea actually tho
  87. [9:28:38 PM] Impern: thank you
  88. [9:28:56 PM] Impern: and once again, noise on the line (rain, smoke, etc) fucks it RIGHT up
  89. [9:29:02 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: ye
  90. [9:29:04 PM] Impern: twenty pages of dickbutt in inverted colours
  91. [9:29:10 PM] Impern: skaia has a strange sense of humour
  92. [9:29:19 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: pffffff
  93. [9:29:23 PM] Keleviel: It has my sense of humor
  94. [9:29:33 PM] Impern: i'm sorry kel
  95. [9:29:38 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: oh and one more thing
  96. [9:29:38 PM] Impern: you're a broken fax cloud now
  97. [9:29:39 PM] Impern: ...
  98. [9:29:43 PM] SHITTY TASTE IN ANIME: Skaia is just a giant hub
  99. [9:29:47 PM] Impern: wait you don't even need to do that do you
  100. [9:29:49 PM] Impern: it's a CLOUD
  101. [9:29:51 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: you shoot your server into Skaia, you need to send Skaia the master keys
  102. [9:29:51 PM] Impern: they show IMAGES
  103. [9:30:00 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: Skaia will /probably/ keep them safe, but... maybe it won't
  104. [9:30:02 PM] Impern: the cloud will DISPLAY THE DAMN FAX
  105. [9:30:11 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: maybe it'll shove the keys at other people it thinks could use them
  106. [9:30:24 PM] Impern: and suddenly problem sleuth makes more sense
  107. [9:30:26 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: and thus admins who have no idea each other exist until they all log on the same time
  108. [9:30:49 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: this also makes manually promoting people kinda superfluous
  109. [9:30:54 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: you stop having admins, Skaia... uh... provides
  110. [9:31:06 PM] Impern: (horror of horrors skaia only runs .net framework 4.5 or above or whatever the latest is, meaning you have to use windows 8 to get it)
  111. [9:31:08 PM] SHITTY TASTE IN ANIME: Skaia is owner
  112. [9:31:11 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: bunch of people suddenly get PMs with the root password
  113. [9:31:13 PM] Impern: (skaia why hath thou forsaken us)
  114. [9:31:18 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: well
  115. [9:31:22 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: they were owner /anyway/
  116. [9:31:30 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: Skaia has your physical hardware
  117. [9:31:35 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: if they have the physical hardware you're hosed
  118. [9:31:55 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: it's just that Skaia has a sense of humor that involves hosing you /very, very slowly/, apparently
  119. [9:32:22 PM] Impern: does skaia also use emails routed via bangpaths?
  120. [9:32:30 PM] Elaine "OJ" Wang: throw it in
  121. [9:32:33 PM] Impern: excellent
